The League
Once a month, usually on the last Thursday in the month, the distance runners meet for a social
event, which is usually a race of of around three miles. The races are intended for senior athletes
of all abilities, and League organiser Ron Needham works out a sealed handicap before each race, with
prizes awarded for the handicap winners. Members of the club take it in turn to find
a suitable venue and design a course. As you'd expect, the venue is usually a pub, and after many of
the events food is organised as well.
The league is structured into divisions of 10 runners, with the top and bottom two promoted or
relegated at the end of the season. All athletes race together, but points are awarded on the basis
of where an athlete finishes in his/her division. So 1st home in each division will score 10 points
and so on. In addition there is a separate Vets League Table, with Vets being awarded points in their
league on the basis of positions in relation to other vets (so 1st Vet gets 10, 2nd gets 9 and so on).
To even things up a little, Vets over 50 have their scores doubled and Vets over 60 trebled.
