Domaille
Opens up the Gap
Mark Domaille took full
advantage of the absence of Craig Heppenstall (the Crigglestone Kid) to go into
a 12 point lead at the top of division one.
The fact that his efforts place Domaille more than 10 points clear means
that he will have to miss one of the remaining two events to be caught.
Nineteen members risked
life and limb to take part in the highly dangerous outing in an event which split
members into teams of two running three alternate legs each on a relay basis
over a challenging course. The course,
which included a steep sting in the tail up the disused relay line at Stanley
and then steeply down Baker Lane, was a good test of aerobic fitness and
tactical guile with those members pacing themselves evenly over their entire
three legs doing the best in the individual results. For individual league points, each athlete’s separate lap times
have been calculated and added together.
Adam Cooper (over-all time 12-48) just managed to edge home in front of
Steve Tibbs by 1 second (12-49), with Dave Needham who paid the price of an
incredible 4-03 on his first lap (fastest single lap by 10 seconds) coming in
third. In the ladies, there were superb
runs by both Denise Green (17-09) and Jane Senior (17-16).
Teams were “sorted” at
the start with the fastest members being placed with the slowest. As usually happens in such events, the teams
with two middle of the order athletes produced the better results with Richard
West and Tony Audsley taking the honours (28-22) over Brian Horsefall and Peter
Farr ((29-43) and Tony White and Stuart Anderson ((30-09). As it’s Easter, prizes were all Easter eggs
this time round. A special mention must
be given to hero Dave Brooke who drew the short straw as the odd one out when
the team pairs came together and actually ran all six legs as his own team to
finish 4th in a time of 30-12.
Dave’s individual position was calculated on the basis of his best three
laps.
The after-venue proved to
be a good one with children allowed in the room and with home entertainment in
the form of often slightly off-key karioke.
Next time we go there, there will be a special prize for the member who
does the best turn (how about Stuart Anderson sings the hits of Des O’Connor?).
The Vets table has seen
Stuart Anderson move further into the lead now 11 points clear of Mark Domaille
and Dot Hand is now 10 points clear at the top of the ladies table. In division 2 of the men’s leagues, Tony Audsley
seems set to pick up the honours.
System
for the Leagues
Just a reminder -
The men’s league is now divided into three divisions. Points are awarded
on the basis of where an athlete finishes in his division. So, 1st home in each division
will score 10 points and so on. Points
credited to each athlete up to the dividing stage have been divided by two and
carried forward to the new structure
- so if you had a score of 80
after six events, you have carried 40 into your new division (we have rounded
up odd scores).
At the end of the
“season” the top of each division will receive awards (divisions 2 and 3 are
likely to be medals).
The Ladies and Vets
leagues remain the same as before with the Vets points awarded on the basis of
positions in relation to other vets (so 1st Vet gets 10, 2nd
gets 9 and so on) with Vets over 50 having their score doubled and Vets over 60
trebled.
The promotion/relegation
in the men’s divisions will be on the basis of two up/two down, so if you’re in
the promotion/relegation zones, you have a lot to still run for.
Accounts
We had £98 in the
kitty. 19 members paid £1-50 each to
give us £28-50, prizes cost us £11, so we have £115-50 remaining.
Publish
your results
If you want your road,
fell or cross country results publishing in the newsletter and on the WEB page,
then let me have details, preferably by email, and I’ll put them in the
newsletter.
Next Event - for
Wakefield Breast Cancer Appeal
The April meeting will be
an open event, with members of the public and other clubs invited to
participate. It will be a 3.3 miles,
off-road event from Stanley Ferry.
Start time is 7-00 and, as we may get a big entry on the night (The
Wakefield Express is doing a big splash) pre-entry is essential (entry form is
attached). The entry fee is £3-50 and
all proceeds will go to the appeal. The
aim is to make money for this cause and nothing will be taken from the entries,
even for prizes (The Frobisher Suite at the Ferry is giving us a couple of
prizes and I’m going to use a surprise cheque I recently received from
Wensleydale RFC for when I called off a game there because of snow, to buy a
few prizes).
We need marshals (there
are a few places where people could possibly go wrong), and helpers to take on
night entries and to help me with time-keeping and results, so if you have
friends or family members who would like to help, please do let me know.
Other
Future Events
The Wakefield City 10k is
on April 7th. Unfortunately,
Sue and I will be away that week-end, as will John Wootton (with the
international special needs team), Jack
Hewitt and Joe Johnson. We are
desperate for help with things such as putting mile markers out on the morning,
helping with the fun runs, controlling a finish funnel, etc. Please think twice before entering the
event, and lend a hand on the day.
Please turn up if you can offer any help at all.
