Midweek Distance Running League Seventh Meeting & Christmas Handicaps
Results & Report by: Ron Needham
16th December 1999 - Thornes Park
The Annual Christmas Handicaps broke with tradition this year (and the club rules, apparently) and was held on a Thursday evening. We were criticised by some club members (not athletes) for this break with tradition but a poll of senior athletes indicated that a Saturday event would have been a disaster as far as turn-out was concerned.
As it was, 18 athletes enjoyed the run and most of these also enjoyed the after-event social (how's the frog, Adam?). A big thank-you also to Dave Brailsford who provided the spot prize. The next will be sponsored by Steve Wilkinson
The men's handicap version of the event was won by Stuart Anderson (for the second time - you won't get away with it again, Stuart), with Elaine Twigg just beating Sue Needham for the Ladies title. On actual times, there was an excellent run by Steve Lowe, winning in 22-21, with youngster Alex Senior only a minute behind.
Another record fell - Val failed to get lost on a distance league event for the first time since August!!
The lead in the senior men's table has changed hands again with Richard West now on top but by
only 3 points. It's getting close. In the Ladies table, Dot's absence with Flu allowed Val to close the gap to only 2 points, whilst in the Vets' table, Stuart Anderson maintains his supremacy, but Richard is closing.
