Pete Young Takes Christmas Handicaps Title
An above form run saw Peter Young take his first
Christmas Handicap title last Thursday.
Peter, who has previously won the club cross country handicap and who
previously has served as the handicapper himself, was running off a start of 3 minutes
over scratch man Craig Heppenstall, admitted afterwards that he is currently in
good form. He completed the 4 miles
course in a real time of 25-30, being 14 seconds ahead of second placed Tony
White, himself running off 3 minutes start also.
An excellent run by newcomer to the distance league Clare
Sykes saw her take the ladies title. I’d
be grateful, by the way, if anyone can pinpoint the whereabouts of the ladies
trophy which has been missing for a few years.
If it doesn’t turn up, we’ll try and get another from the club and present
it to Clare.
The entry of 24 athletes many not be as good as
during the hey days of the 1980s when 40 or so took part, but it represents an
excellent turn out today.
A Good time was had by all in the Magnet afterwards
(kindly arranged for us by Graham Whitworth), with a superb buffet prepared for
us by Sue and Val (many thanks are owed to them) and paid for out of the
profits so far.
Many thanks also, by the way, are owed to Mike Logan,
Dave Needham and Moira Domaille for their assistance.
Silver
Shoe Award
I’m not sure where this had its origin, but the silver
shoe trophy (it’s actually a painted Hi Tec Silver Shadow mounted on a board) is awarded annually for some reason or
another, possibly for services to the club, but maybe for someone who does something
silly or whatever. The winner last year
has to decide who should receive it the next.
This year, it was presented by
Dave Brailsford (last year’s winner) to Stuart Anderson for his persistence and
consistency in turning up late for events.
This comes as no surprise to those who have known Stuart through the
years (he once arrived an hour early for a race and still missed the start) and
it is time that his contribution was duly and suitably recognised. By the way, Dave, the answer as to what happened
to Sue and I at the last year’s lunch was that the car broke down.
System
for the Leagues
We have now divided the men’s league into different
divisions. From now, points will be
awarded on the basis of where an athlete finishes in his division. So, 1st home in each division
will score 10 points and so on. Points
credited to each athlete up to the dividing stage have been divided by two and
carried forward to the new structure
- so if you had a score of 80
after six events, you have carried 40 into your new division (we have rounded
up odd scores).
At the end of the “season” the top of each division
will receive awards (divisions 2 and 3 are likely to be medals).
The Ladies and Vets leagues will remain the same as
before with the Vets points awarded on the basis of positions in relation to
other vets (so 1st Vet gets 10, 2nd gets 9 and so on) with
Vets over 50 having their score doubled and Vets over 60 trebled.
Accounts
There was no entry fee for the Christmas Handicaps
and the buffet cost us £33, leaving £72 in the kitty.

Thoughts for next year - should we operate the leagues as this year (i.e. run one table to the half-way stage and then divide into divisions) or should we have promotion and relegation at the end of the “season” (say with the top three of each division promoted and the bottom three relegated)? Have a think about it.
