Tibbs Opening up a gap

Steve Tibbs’ consolidated upon early season charge towards the distance league title last Thursday with an excellent run over approximately 3 miles at Newmillerdam.  Steve’s cause was helped by the temporary absence of nearest rivals Tony White and Rob Parfrey.  We may also be in line for a new ladies champion this season as Denise Green once more proved her worth.  In the Vets table, though. Stuart Anderson once more took full advantage of the absence of nearest rivals to head up the table.

There were excellent runs from newcomers Paul Croft, David Dawson and Mark Box  -  hope you enjoyed both the run and the company, guys, and that you’ll continue to participate.  Mike Logan had a run way above recent form to deserve the leading handicap prize, with Dave Brooke, Denise Green and Tony Audsley having their efforts rewarded by the handicap system.

Our thanks to Steve Wilkinson for thinking up the course.

Accounts

We had £131-50 in the kitty.  19 members paid £28-50 and prizes cost us £10-50, leaving us with a balance of £149-50.

Next Event

The next event will take place on Thursday 26th September from The Half Way House at Robin Hood.  Course to be designed by Mark Domaille. Enter on the night (£1-50).  Be there at 7-00 for a 7-30 start.

Club Chairman

Just to let everyone know that for personal (and inter-personal) reasons, after 12 years, I have decided not to continue as Club Chairman and won’t be participating as a member of the management committee next year.  John Newsome has been persuaded to put his name forward as Chair.  I can think of no one better to take on the role and I hope everyone gives him full support.  My decision does not affect my organisation of the Distance League, and this will continue as before.

John Taylor

Members will be aware of  the sad death of John Taylor, the Bingley fell runner.  John apparently suffered a major heart attack.  He was 33.

John was a good friend to Wakefield Harriers.  In fact, about 12 years ago, when he was a young man just breaking on to the scene, he ran out with us at training nights for a long time and I had great hopes that he would join us (he was looking for a move from Holmfirth) but he understandably joined Bingley instead and went on to gain National Cross Country Championship medals with them and several international fell running vests.  Despite this national and international success, however, he continued to take part in local events, competing regularly in our 5k and 10k races at Pugneys.  He won both this year and I remember joking with him about keeping him waiting in the rain for his prize (which I insisted on presenting last, just so he’d get wet).  In fact John was a genuinely friendly nice guy who had something of the older athletics values: our race finish officials remember well the fact that he always took the time to say a genuine thank you to them for giving their help  -  something so rare these days;  and I remember once at a fell race near Skipton on a snowy horrible cold miserable day, John, having won the race, standing near the top of the last slope, greeting and applauding every last runner in.

John will be very sadly missed by us all.

Guy Goodair writes:

John was a brilliant but very unassuming runner. I was with him when we supported Steve Butler on his first Bob Graham attempt and I was struck with his modesty and concern that Steve should get round (Steve failed due to dehydration that day) but went on to succeed a couple of weeks later. However John was so full of running that day I'm sure he could have got round himself. He will be sorely missed.
