Holidays and a slightly
less accessible venue reduced the entry to the penultimate event of the season
but 16 athletes found their way around a largely off-road course of
approximately two and three quarter miles.
How times have changed - only a couple of years ago we would have
been celebrating an entry of 16. Mark
Ridgway demonstrated fine pace, heading the field in a time of 14-30, with
Steve Tibbs and Dave Brailsford trailing about a minute behind. In the ladies’ event, Jane Senior now
recovered from her London Marathon led Denise Green by 31 seconds. Welcome to newcomer Maria Dodge, by the way -
all the way from New Zealand. We
hope you enjoyed both the run and the after event craic.
Many thanks to everyone
who contributed to the on night organisation.
The course was being tried out for the Yorkshire Vets event to be held
on 1st June - more details of that later in this
newsletter.
The event just about
settled all but one of the league tables.
With a maximum of only ten points available in the last race, Steve
Tibbs now cannot be bettered at the top of the men’s division 1 with Denise Green
and Steve Wilkinson enjoying similar
positions in the ladies and men’s division
2 tables. The Vets’ table is all
but won by Tony Audsley as he now leads Stuart Anderson by 21 points. Should Stuart finish no lower than 4th
vet at the next event and Tony not show up at all, Stuart would finish level on
points (remember that a vet over 60 scores treble his points in the Vet’s
league). Division 3 has only 4 points
separating Richard West and David Dawson
- an interesting situation if
both turn up for the final fixture.
Accounts
We had £186-00 in the
kitty. We took £24-00 in entry
fees. Prizes cost £12-00, leaving us
with a balance of £198-00.
Next Event
The final event of the
season will take place at Stanley Rodillian Rugby Club on June 5th
(the last Thursday in May falls during Spring Bank Holiday week). Dave Brooks has kindly offered to cater once
again. This venue has been chosen as it
offers both showers and a kitchen for Dave to use (essential if the weather is
bad) as well as a licensed bar. Don’t
forget that presentations will also take place after this event.
As discussed previously,
I am considering affiliating the league to the North of England and am
currently investigating the implications of this. This would give us the opportunity to open up participation to
members of any affiliated club without the worries of whether or not we are
insured and without having to apply for permits for each and every event. The affiliation fee is £20 per annum and the
affiliation process is very straightforward.
I’d like to discuss the future of the league in detail after the next
event, please. If we do decide to go
down the affiliation route, the discussion will form the inaugural general
meeting of the new league and a draft constitution will be available for
agreement.
