MID-WEEK DISTANCE RUNNING LEAGUE

A good run for everyone on Thursday night with no real surprises.  Steve Tibbs went further ahead in his race to win the men’s championship whilst heroine Jane Senior, who had already run 15 miles earlier in the day as part of her marathon training, and who faced an all-night shift ahead of her as doctor for an entire area, took advantage of Denise Green’s enforced absence through illness to pull back the lead in the ladies championships to only 4 points.  In the Vets, Tony Audsley maintained his 4 point lead over Stuart Anderson whilst Steve Wilkinson is in there too only 6 points adrift of pole position (and also way out in the lead in division 2).  A good night was had in the pub afterwards (thanks to Graham for organising the food and the course).  The only sour part of the evening was the ugly situation on Broadway with the ladies being confronted by a threatening mob of yobs, who called sexual abuse and attempted to assault run one runner by pushing a wheelchair into her legs.  I’m afraid that when we design courses in future, we really must take into account threats to the safety of our members.  Many thanks, once again to Pippa for her valuable help in recording finishers.

Accounts

We had £136-50 in the kitty.  We took £58-50 in entry fees and a donation to the grub from a non-runner.  The food cost us £35 and the prizes cost £11-50, leaving us with a balance of £148-50.

Next Event

Next month’s league event will be held on 27^th February and will go from the New Inn at Durkar.  The entry fee will be £1-50, with no food provided.

Peter Young has now taken over the maintenance of the site, so we hope as many of you as possible will use the site to find out about the club's fixtures, results and other news. He will try and include the Distance Running League Newsletters on the site, and would welcome suggestions for any improvements or additions to the site.

 

Easter Training Holiday on the French Riviera

Peter Young and a few others are going again at Easter to Antibes on the French Riviera for a training holiday. From 1986 to 1995 Peter organised 11 coach trips there, most of them at Easter time, when the weather is usually just perfect for both running and sightseeing. These trips were very popular, with many club members and their families going every year - Jack and Celia Hewitt held the record for going 10 times ! Several club members have kept going back there since, although instead of enduring the long coach journey, they now fly there by one of the low-cost airlines that now go to Nice. With flights from £60 return (if you book early), and caravans from £140 per week (for up to 4 people) it is a low cost holiday, suitable for all the family, with plenty of places to visit. For the runners there are plenty of good training runs, and the chance to take part in a local race or two - this year Easter coincides with the Nice Half Marathon, which is a terrific event.
