Still
close at the top
A windy and rainy
February night saw 15 members take on a roughly 3 mile course, organised by Rob
Parfrey, last Thursday. An excellent
run from recently injured Craig Heppenstall managed to pull himself back two points
on a rather jet-lagged Mark Domaille.
There are now only 4 points separating these two at the top of division
one and, with three events left, it could go all the way to the wire.
In division two, Tony
Audsley’s extremely good performance on the night saw him pull 7 points clear
and, providing he manages to turn out at each of the remaining races, he should
take well deserved honours.
The Vets table saw Stuart
Anderson move 8 points clear of Mark Domaille.
Strange isn’t it? Mark is in
strong contention for both the division one and vets titles, but could well end
up with nothing at the end of the day.
Jane Senior continues to
improve with her training for the London and once again took a well deserved handicap
prize but the ladies league title looks to be once again heading Dot’s way -
providing, of course, she is able to turn out at the last three events.
System
for the Leagues
Just a reminder -
The men’s league is now divided into three divisions. Points are awarded
on the basis of where an athlete finishes in his division. So, 1st home in each division
will score 10 points and so on. Points
credited to each athlete up to the dividing stage have been divided by two and
carried forward to the new structure
- so if you had a score of 80
after six events, you have carried 40 into your new division (we have rounded
up odd scores).
At the end of the
“season” the top of each division will receive awards (divisions 2 and 3 are
likely to be medals).
The Ladies and Vets
leagues remain the same as before with the Vets points awarded on the basis of
positions in relation to other vets (so 1st Vet gets 10, 2nd
gets 9 and so on) with Vets over 50 having their score doubled and Vets over 60
trebled.
Accounts
We had £87-50 in the
kitty. 15 members paid £1-50 each to
give us £22-50, prizes cost us £12, so we have £98 remaining.
Publish
your results
If you want your road,
fell or cross country results publishing in the newsletter and on the WEB page,
then let me have details, preferably by email, and I’ll put them in the
newsletter.
Next Event
Next month’s league event
will take place on Thursday 28th March (day before Good Friday). It will take place from the Grove pub on
Aberford Road, Stanley. We haven’t yet
decided on the format. It may well be a
parlaaf, with teams of two (suitably “weighted” to ensure fast runners go with
slow ones) running 8 laps of the nature reserve (i.e. 4 laps per runner). Each lap is about 700 metres. Depends on how dark it is and if we feel it
is easy to see where you’re going (Sue and I are going to have a run round it
one dark night to check).
Alternatively, it may be a loop road run of about 2 miles.
Please be there at
7-00.
Other events
Our hosting of the
Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships was a tremendous success. The course lived up to its just reputation
for being the best and one of the most challenging in Yorkshire (if not the
north of England). I’d love to get
international runners on it (but, there again, those guys don’t know what real cross
country is, do they?). Our grateful thanks,
as always, to John Wootton, Jack Hewitt, Joe Johnson, Dave Brooke, Sue Needham,
Dot Hand and John and Wendy Newsome for all their help.
Other
Future Events
The Wakefield City 10k is
on April 7th. Unfortunately,
Sue and I will be away that week-end, as will John Wootton (with the
international special needs team) and Jack Hewitt. We are desperate for help with things such as putting mile markers
out on the morning, helping with the fun runs, controlling a finish funnel,
etc. Please think twice before entering
the event, and lend a hand on the day.
Please ring me if you can offer any help at all.
April’s
event - for Wakefield Breast Cancer Appeal
As indicated last month, we’ve decided to organise
the April meeting as an open event, inviting members of the public and other
clubs, with an increased entry fee, proceeds going to the Wakefield Breast
Cancer appeal, organised by the Wakefield Express. The venue will be Stanley Ferry.
