Midweek Distance Running League Fourth Meeting - Rothwell Run
Results & Report by: Ron Needham
30th September 1999 - Fanny Pit Lane, Rothwell
The fourth meeting took place from Fanny Pit Lane near Rothwell on the footpaths by the canal and the reclamation land. The route was well marked by Clive Grace and, despite the impending darkness, everyone declared it a huge success and a good place for future time trials or relay events.
The dark nights are now with us and the 6-30 planned start time no doubt prevented a number of regulars from attending. However, ten members made the start, including Steve Tibbs who rode there on his bike and Tony White who found his way there straight from work by bus.
With Andy Johnson now at university and some of the lads saving themselves for the Northern 6 stage on the Saturday, the event was wide open and Steve Tibbs recorded his first win of the series, closely followed by Alan Slack, 16 seconds behind. The handicap couldn’t have been closer with Alan being allowed 15 seconds on Steve, leaving Steve, therefore, the handicap prize winner by only one second. The women’s handicap was won by Val Anderson. The evening was rounded off in a pub in Rothwell. Unfortunately, although Dot Hand managed to find her way round the dimly lit course, she got lost going to the pub, ending up in Whitwood (about 5 miles away).
