Two of the league championships were sorted out on a two lap 2.7 miles course at Wrenthorpe. Craig Heppenstall (who has lived at Crigglestone since being 12 years old) made sure of the senior men’s title, despite an early scare as he was chased in close proximity up Bradford road by an ageing one-lapper screaming obscenities. Seriously, this has been a good year for Craig who returned from university to put in some excellent performances both in our distance league and in other road races.

The ladies title was claimed for the third successive year by Dot Hand who ran as well as ever. The Vet’s title is still in some doubt as Richard West could still be caught by Mike Logan (but it would require Mike to win the actual last event and Richard to finish tenth) and by Stuart Anderson who was absent owing to holiday last night. It all depends upon how many athletes are between Stuart and Richard in the last event placings. However, if Richard doesn’t make it to the next event, Stuart will have to finish in 7th place to gain sufficient vets points to win.

We had a good turn out for the last event, with 12 athletes counting. Not bad if you consider that some regulars were recovering from their London Marathon jaunts and the entire Anderson threesome were absent. The course was a good one and the WMC made us very welcome indeed with a sausages and chip butties (at the bargain price of 50p per athlete) and cheap, good beer. It could well prove to be a popular venue in the future.

The handicap prizes were won by Mark Domaille (who had an excellent run and took away a big bottle of scrumpy as his prize), with Sue Needham, Craig Heppenstall, Graham Whitworth and Tony Audsley all taking the minor (mainly alcoholic prizes).
