Closest finish for months
Craig Heppenstall’s return from injury brought him
into close conflict with a very fit Steve Tibbs in a 2.9 dash around Carlton. The two were locked almost together as they
appeared through the gloom at the finish in front of the Unicorn pub and there
was just one second in it as they crossed the line with Heppenstall ahead. 17 athletes took part. The result brings leaves Mark ahead of the
newly constituted division one table, but only by the narrowest of margins. The championship is wide open really could
go to anyone in the top four or so, dependent to a certain extent upon injury
and other commitments. Can anyone
afford not to take part?
Handicaps were based on the last two events and also
provided close results with most running to form. It was one of our lady athletes who took first handicap prize,
however. Maree Anderson, training regularly
now with London aspirant Alix Jordanova recorded her first win over table
leader Dot Hand and stormed the handicap system to win by 28 seconds over Peter
Farr who also produced an effort over and above recent form.
System
for the Leagues
We have now divided the men’s league into different
divisions. From now, points will be
awarded on the basis of where an athlete finishes in his division. So, 1st home in each division
will score 10 points and so on. Points
credited to each athlete up to the dividing stage have been divided by two and
carried forward to the new structure
- so if you had a score of 80
after six events, you have carried 40 into your new division (we have rounded
up odd scores).
One problem, Graham Whitworth, Tony White and Dave
Brailsford all are level on 22 points. However,
Graham’s and Dave’s 22 points came after they scored 43 and had their 21.5
rounded up to 22, Tony scored 44, so he goes into division 1.
At the end of the “season” the top of each division
will receive awards (divisions 2 and 3 are likely to be medals).
The Ladies and Vets leagues will remain the same as before
with the Vets points awarded on the basis of positions in relation to other
vets (so 1st Vet gets 10, 2nd gets 9 and so on) with Vets
over 50 having their score doubled and Vets over 60 trebled. By the way, Paul Sanderson told me on
Thursday evening that he is in fact a vet, so I have recalculated the vets
table.
Accounts
We took £25-50 in entries, £13-00 went on prizes,
leaving £105 in the kitty. We may use some of this to put on a buffet
at the Christmas Handicaps in December.
Publish
your results
If you want your road, fell or cross country results
publishing in the newsletter and on the WEB page, then let me have details,
preferably by email, and I’ll put them in the newsletter.
Next Event
Next month’s league event are the Christmas
Handicaps and will take place on the 20th December over the
traditional two lap of the park course.
Please be at the start/finish area of the track no later than 6-45. The Christmas Handicaps are run on a “start
handicap” basis (i.e. if you have 15 minutes start, you start 15 minutes before
the scratch man). Please encourage as
many as possible to turn out - anyone can run, including shot putters, club
presidents, etc. Will last year’s
winner please remember to bring back the cup (nicely polished)? There is no entry fee. Instead, everyone running MUST bring a unisex prize to the
value of between £3 and £4, suitably wrapped (its true nature disguised if
possible). First back takes first
choice from the table, and so on.
Please don’t run if you don’t bring a prize. We are hoping to put on a buffet at a local hostelry. Details probably on the night (we have to
find somewhere willing to do it for us on the Thursday prior to Christmas).
Other
Future Events

London
Marathon
We have been successful in
gaining 5 club places for the London Marathon.
These will be allocated on the following basis:
1. First priority goes to club members who have taken
part in this year’s distance league and who have pre-entered the London and
been rejected. If you wish to be
allocated a place, on this basis, you must have given me your rejection slip
prior to the presentation at the handicaps on the 20th December (no
slip, no place).
2. Second priority if there are any places left goes to
any club members who have pre-entered the London and been rejected. If anyone wishes to be allocated a place, on
this basis, they must also have given
me their rejection slip prior to the handicap prize presentations on the 20th
December (no slip, no place).
3. Third priority if there are any places left goes to
club members who have taken part in this year’s distance league and who have
not pre-entered the London. If you wish
to be allocated a place, on this basis, you must tell me before the handicaps
presentation by the 20th December.
4. Fourth priority if there are any places left goes to
any other club member. If a member
wishes to be allocated a place, on this basis, they must tell me before the
handicaps presentation by the 20th December.
5. If at any stage of this process, we have more
applications than entries available, we will make a draw at the Christmas
Handicaps.
6. Note that for all applications from 1 to 4 above, the
member must be present to collect the entry at the handicaps presentation, or
MUST SUPPLY ME WITH AN A4 SIZE STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE. I will not run round getting entries to
people who can’t be bothered to help me in this way.
7. Finally, there is a substitution system in operation
this year. If you discover you cannot
take part, you must inform me by 31st January, so the number can be
reallocated. Please don’t be selfish
and hang on to your number hoping you can defer to next year -
another club member may be able
to use it

Thoughts for next
year -
should we operate the leagues as this year (i.e. run one table to the
half-way stage and then divide into divisions) or should we have promotion and
relegation at the end of the “season” (say with the top three of each division
promoted and the bottom three relegated)?
Have a think about it.
