Almost There
Over a hundred runners
and walkers took part in the Stanley Ferry run last Thursday and raised in
excess of £600 for the Wakefield Breast Cancer Appeal. The event, the penultimate fixture in the
distance league season, was opened up to any member of the public. Craig Heppenstall led the entire field for
the just over 5k course, coming home in a time of 14-17, to take 10 points in
the division 1 table, ahead of Adam Cooper and Dave Needham. Mark Domaille’s 7th place
over-all gave him 8 points in the division 1 table and places him exactly 10
points clear at the top. This means
that even if he doesn’t make it to the start line on the final event, Craig can
only tie (in which case, the over-all positions of the two for all the events
in the season will be added together and the lowest scorer will then take the
title). In the ladies event, Jane
Senior, fresh from her London Marathon outing, took the honours ahead of Dot
Hand, but Dot’s 12 point lead in the ladies table means she is in an
unassailable position to take her fourth consecutive title. Stuart Anderson’s performance also ensures
that he will retain the Vets league title ahead of Mark Domaille. The situation in the second division depends
upon the last event, with Tony Audsley 7 points ahead of Rob Parfrey and
vulnerable if he doesn’t make it to the start line. In division 3, Brian Horsefall is favourite to take the honours.
A really good social
occasion was enjoyed by all with a good course, a good run and a superb
evening’s entertainment in the Frobisher Suite, the highlight of which was the
Kettlethorpe Kid’s impersonation of ABBA in the karioke (which raised another
£4-82 for the fund - we even considered taking another collection
from audience members keen to pay to get him to shut up). The starter was, of course, Jim Royle
(although he was initially mistaken for Mark Domaille).
Our thanks to the
following members for their assistance in putting on the event: Jack Hewitt and Pippa Parfrey (marshalling),
Alan Stainer and Joe Johnson (time-keeping), Sue Needham and Val Anderson
(marking out the course), Wendy Newsome (first aid). Thanks also to John Wootton for his help and to Sue Millican for
donating a raffle prize.
Accounts
All entry fees went
direct to the charity fund so we had £115-50 in the kitty and that situation
remains.

Wakefield City 10k
A big thank you to
everyone who helped make this event such
a success whilst Sue and I were in
the wilds of Jasper. The race and both
fun runs had a record number of finishers and club members helping in the
organisation were pushed to the limit but coped magnificently. First Harriers home and taking the club
trophies were Craig Heppenstall and Penny Thackray.
Next Event
The next event in the
series is the last of the season and will be followed by the presentation and a
buffet. Dave Brook has kindly offered
to put on both. The location is the pub
on Heath Common and the date is 30th May. Run starts at 7-30.
Please be there at 7-00 to register.
Everyone is welcome - let’s have a really good social evening for
the last event.
Other
Future Events
We help to organise the
Sandal Castle 10k every year at Pugney’s.
This year’s race takes place on May 9th. We need help with the usual, time-keeping
and finish recording - so if you’re doing nothing, please come and
help. The charity is Arthritis
Research. The race organiser is Brian Williamson who donated 6 bottles of Cava
as spot prizes for the Stanley Ferry run and who provided invaluable help with
on the night entries and with putting together the finish list. One good turn certainly deserves another, so
please do come and give your support.
The first event of the
new season is the Pugney’s 5k, which takes place on June 27th.
