Return of the Crigglestone Kid
Craig Heppenstall marked his
distance league comeback at Robin Hood on Thursday evening with a convincing
lead of 16 seconds over the 2.5 miles course over league leader Steve
Tibbs. The position at the top of the
table, however, remains unchanged and, in fact, rather perversely, Steve
actually increased his lead since second in the table Dave Brook could manage
only 6th place on the night.
In the ladies table, Jane Senior took full advantage of Denise Green’s absence
through injury with a superb run to close the gap to a couple of points and Val
Anderson’s run brought her only one point adrift. An interesting situation is also brewing up in the vets table,
with Pete Farr closing down on Stuart Anderson’s dominance of the vets
championship.
18 members tackled the
hilly course based on the Half-way House, courtesy of Mark Domaille. The leading handicap prizes were taken by
Jane Senior (whose improvement goes on and on) and Alan Stainer, who made a
remarkable improvement on last month’s performance. Alan’s decision to choose the Kylie advent calendar was equally
remarkable. We hope you and Kylie have
lots of fun together, Alan. On the
subject of handicaps, I was asked how scientific it all is -
well, first I rank everyone running based upon their last two distance
league performances, then I compare positions with those. Anyone making an significant improvement on
the ranking gets a prize. Then I look
at times and try and estimate where people should be on that basis (e.g. you
Mike might have finished 20 seconds ahead of Dave last month but this month is
50 seconds ahead, but still in the same positions). If all else fails, I throw in a few wild cards (which is sports
speak for making it up).
Welcome, by the way, to
Brian Cooper, a new member, over 60 vet.
Hope you enjoyed the outing Brian and that we see you at all the rest.
Accounts
We had £149-50 in the
kitty. 18 members paid £27 and prizes
cost us £14, leaving us with a balance of £162-50.
Next Event
The next event will take
place on Thursday 31st October from The Bedford Arms at East Ardsley
(go on A650, over the M1 round-a-bout, take next major right hand turn in about
5 or 600 metres, Bedford Arms is on the right hand side before you start to go
down the Falls). Course is designed by Steve
Tibbs and Denise Green. It is approx
2.5 hilly miles. Enter on the night (£1-50).
Be there at 7-00 for a 7-30 start (ladies starting about 7-20).
London Marathon
I was asked last Thursday
about London Marathon club entries and if the club is sending for them. Having thought about it since, I’ve realised
that the request has to be on club letter heading and has to come from a club
official. As I am no longer club chairman,
or a member of the management committee, I do not fulfil the requirements. The letter requesting places will have to
come from one of the senior officers who will also be responsible for
allocation of the places when they arrive.
I know from past experience that club committee members sometimes read
this newsletter (at least they do when it suits them), so …… over
to you guys.
Corrections
Last months results unfortunately omitted Maree
Anderson and failed to take into account the fact that Mark Box is a vet
40. The league tables have been
corrected to set things right.
