Twelfth (Final) Meeting 2000/2001 Season

7th June 2001 - Stanley

Not quite an Election Day landslide for Crigglestone Kid

Unlike the other relatively minor event taking place on the same day (the general election), we had a superb turn-out on the 7th June and a great time was had by all. We abandoned the idea of running off road as the footpaths, although open, were overgrown (no one has been using them during the foot and mouth crisis). No fewer than 20 athletes took part in the 3.5 mile run around Stanley .

Craig Heppenstall, the "Crigglestone Kid" confirmed his domination of the league but was a mere 15 seconds ahead of veteran Adam Cooper. Richard West did all that was necessary for him to take the veteran’s title and Dot Hand added to her lead in the ladies.

I resisted the pressures from Mr Domaille to disqualify nearly everyone for either going the wrong way or for not going the wrong way, and a good time was had by all in the presentation afterwards. Live music provided too. I’m not sure who won the pool championships.

A good run by Mike Logan saw him take the first handicap prize. Hope the bottle of Old Fart bitter (no prizes for guessing which club official that was dedicated to) went down well.

I was delighted also to present trophies for the Yorkshire Vets’ league to all those taking part last year.

Many thanks, by the way, to all those who kindly said "thank you" for organising the league - it really is nice to be appreciated.

I’m thinking of having two divisions next season - either that or we shall have to think of a better scoring system, since, under the present system, only the first 9 male runners can actually score more than one point. Two divisions will give those lower down the table, either because they can’t get to every event or because they rarely get in the top 10, something to aim for too. Any views or ideas would be very much appreciated.
