Huge
turn-out for final event of season
A record turn out of 25
runners did full justice to a superb course for the last event of our season at
the King’s Arms on Heath Common on Thursday evening. It was a fitting end to a “season” full of interest with some
excellent runs. Adam Cooper led all the
way on the two lap course of about 2.6 miles to come home in 14-26, leaving
Steve Tibbs some 26 seconds in his wake.
In the ladies event, Jane Senior dominated in an excellent 19-07, from
Denise Green’s 19-49.
The handicap prizes on
the night were taken by Jane Senior (whose steady improvement over the year has
been very good to see), Dave Brook, Alan Stainer, Paul Sanderson, Jonny Wootton
and Dave Brailsford, all of whom managed to run significantly better than the
time expected of them.
The league title was
practically decided before the event, Mark Domaille being 10 points ahead of
nearest rival Craig Heppenstall. In the
event, the Crigglestone kid’s decision not to turn out a few days prior to the
Northern track and field championships meant that Mark had only to avoid being
knocked down prior to crossing the line, but his 4th place in 15-03
showed him to be a worthy champion.
Steward Anderson took the Vets and Dot Hand the Ladies, as expected, but
there were a couple of surprises in divisions 2 and 3, with Rob Parfrey taking
full advantage of Tony Audsley’s absence to take the division 2 medal by one
point and Steve Faulkner claiming full 10 points in division 3 to tie at the
top with Brian Horsefall.
Our grateful thanks to
John Wootton, Joe Johnson and Jack Hewitt for their help in marshalling, and to
Iris Johnson for helping me with the results.
A great big thanks from everyone to Dave Brook for arranging things with
the pub, sorting a really good course and for putting on such a wonderful
spread of food.
Accounts
We £115-50 in the kitty
and took £37-50 on the night in entries.
The food cost us £47 and the handicap prizes were £12, so we have £94
left in the kitty.
Publish
your results
If you want your road,
fell or cross country results publishing in the newsletter and on the WEB page,
then let me have details, preferably by email, and I’ll put them in the
newsletter.
Sandal Castle 10k
Another big thank you to all who helped in this
event: Alan Stainer, John Wootton, Jack
Hewitt, Dot Hand, Sue Needham, Val Anderson, Moira Domaille, Jenny Domaille,
Maree Anderson, John and Wendy Newsome.
Our entry broke all records this year and we were just 15 short of the
700 mark. Good to see Adam Cooper
doing so well again (2nd over-all).
This event is now one of the premier off-road races in the country (as
described by Running Magazine) and something of which those of us who care
about the quality of the events we put on can be very proud. The following is an email received the day
after this year’s race:
“Having completed for the
first time the 10K yesterday, I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the
experience. I have been racing since 1987 and with the amount of races I
complete, it is rare that I enter a race that I have not done before. As yours
has often clashed with the Leeds half in previous years, this time I had the
chance to do both.
My assessment of your race
is superb organisation from start to finish, excellent marshals full of praise
and encouragement for the runners and a testing but extremely enjoyable course
allowing runners the opportunity to get off the pavements for once. I cannot
recall such a well organised event, everything very clear, and I having run at
London and the GNR five times each, I also include those races in that
statement. I have nothing but praise for your superb event and I very much look
forward to returning next year as a veteran.
Many thanks and
congratulations to all concerned with the event.
Yours in sport, Nick Varley”
I think that just about
says it all - well done to everyone.
Next Event
The next event in the
series is the first of the new season and is the Second Chance 5k based upon
Pugneys (27th June). This is
an open event we organise annually, raising money for the Second Chance Head
Injuries Unit at Pinderfield’s Hospital.
By the way, it does have a permit.
Entry can be made on the
forms available at the track or on the night.
No separate entry fee for the league for this event, and no handicap
prizes on the night.
