2018 Club News January - March

25th Mar 2018. Danny Franks & Hayley Newbound Win Club 10k Championship.


Wakefield Harriers 2018 10k Champions Danny Franks & Hayley Newbound

Conditions were excellent for this year's Wakefield Hospice 10k road race, and some fine times and several PBs were recorded by club members on the undulating out and back course along Horbury Road.
Wakefield Harriers had a good showing in the Men's race, and the club easily won the team prize. Danny Franks came an excellent 2nd in 34:43, and he was chased home by U20 Mark Bostock in 3rd place in 34:52, with Ross Penny 7th in 35:40. All three recorded PB times. New members Ian Richardson and Mark Mills were next home from the club finishing 10th and 12th respectively, with times of 36:17 & 36:33, and Benjamin Khan was another recording a good PB in 17th place with 36:54. Other Harriers under 40 minutes were Craig Davidson with 37:29 & Chris Rippon with 39:23. Peter McNamara was 2nd in the M55 category with 40:16.
We only had 3 ladies competing this year, and Hayley Newbound was first Harrier finishing 9th lady in 44:32. Rosie Boughton and Elizabeth Turner were 2nd and 3rd in the Club Championship. Race Results.
The race also incorporated the Club 10k Road Race Championship, and Danny and Hayley are new names added to the list of title winners.
It was also the 5th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, which is currently led by Mark Bostock, ahead of Danny Franks and Ross Penny.

24th Mar 2018. English Schools Cross Country Finals.


Wakefield Harriers had five young athletes representing West Yorkshire in the English Schools Cross Country Finals, for school years 5-7, at Prestwold Hall near Loughborough. In the Year 7 Boys race, Danny George and Euan Gaskin had strong runs finishing 58th and 66th. In the Year 6 Boys race, Ben Shackleton finished an excellent 17th, helping the team to first place. Courtney Newsome and Jessica Watson, helped the Year 5 girls team to first place, finishing 63rd & 106th.

24th Mar 2018. Spenborough AC Spring Open Meeting.
At the Spenborough AC Spring Open Meeting at Cleckheaton there were quite a few Harriers competing, and there were Grade 3 or better performances from Alfie Edwards (U15B LJ 5.85m & PV 3.30m), Lucy Holmes (SW Shot 11.70m) & Luke Thackray (SM Javelin 49.71m). Meeting Results.

18th Mar 2018. Pontefract AC Indoor Athletics Meeting.
A good number of Wakefield athletes turned out at the Indoor Athletics Meeting organised by Pontefract AC at Thornes Park Stadium. Results from Power of 10

17th Mar 2018. Seven Harriers at English Schools Cross Country Championships.
Wakefield Harriers had seven runners representing West Yorkshire at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, at Temple Newsam Park near Leeds.
In the Senior Boys race, even though only in the first year in the age group, Matthew Hill had a superb run to finish 19th, and 1st counter for West Yorkshire. Mark Bostock was 5th counter in 213th place. The club also had the 1st counter for West Yorkshire in the Senior Girls race, as India Elliott had a good run to finish 69th. In the Intermediate Girls race Abbey Brooke was 149th and Lucie Hall 253rd, whilst in the Intermediate Boys race Bailey Mann was 181st. Emily Plimmer finished 173rd in the Junior Girls event. 10th/11th Mar 2018. New Club U17 Heptathlon Record for Aran Thomas.
Three of Wakefield's all-round athletes competed at the England Athletics U15/U17 Combined Events Championships at Sheffield, and they all did well, with two of them winning Northern Counties titles.
U17 Aran Thomas gained PBs in four of his seven events, and won the Northern Counties title, coming 12th overall in the national event. His points total of 4074 was a New Club U17 Heptathlon Record, and his individual results were 60m 7.66s, LJ 5.90m, SP 13.53m, HJ 1.59m, 60mH 9.72s, PV 3.86m & 1000m 3:16.00. First year U17 George Lowrie finished a creditable 25th in this competition with 2858 points. The fast improving U15 Alfie Edwards recorded several new PBs on his way to finishing 9th in the Pentathlon competition, and he also won the Northern Counties U15 title with the excellent score of 2009 points. 10th/11th Mar 2018. British Masters Track & Field Championships.
At the British Masters Track & Field Championships at Lee Valley Lynsie Whyke came away with two medals, winning the F35 Triple Jump with 10.56m and the Long Jump with 4.78m. Results Link.

10th Mar 2018. Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
Four Wakefield Harriers represented Yorkshire at the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Loughborough, and they all did very well, helping Yorkshire to second in the overall team trophy.



Matthew Hill continued his fine form to finish 18th and 2nd Yorkshire counter in the U17 Men's race, and help the county finish 2nd in that race. In the U20 Women's race India Elliott was Yorkshire's 4th counter in 63rd position, helping the team to finish 7th. Abbey Brooke was 62nd and 6th Yorkshire runner to finish in the U17 Women's race, and Mark Bostock finished 81st in the U20 Men's race, and 6th runner home for Yorkshire. Results from Power of 10

8th Mar 2018. England Athletics Registration for 2018/2019.
The England Athletics Registration for 2018/2019 is due by 31st March.
The fee is now £15 per year for all competing athletes, and the the club has the task of registering all its athletes, and collecting this fee on behalf of England Athletics. 5th Mar 2018. New Members Joining Wakefield Harriers in March.

4th Mar 2018. Weekend Roundup of Leading Results.
The winter weather meant that most road races were cancelled, including the Norton 9 which was in the Distance League. However the new 'Big Half Marathon' in London, which included the British Championships, did take place and Julie Briscoe had another good run to record 77 mins 01 secs, finishing 15th lady and first in the F40 category. Ross Penny wasn't too far behind, and recorded a new PB of 77 mins 53 secs. Results Link.
Just a few Harriers took part this year in the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships at Cleckheaton.
Men 35-49 results , Men 50-69 results , Women Over 35 & Men Over 70 results.

24th/25th Feb 2018. England Athletics U15/U17/U20 Indoor Championships.
At the England Athletics U15/U17/U20 Indoor Championships at Sheffield there were some great performances from the Harriers, including two gold medals and a new club record.
Abby Ward won the U20W High Jump with a season's best of 1.79m, and Amy Hunt was victorious in the U15G Pole Vault with 2.81m. Alfie Edwards was unlucky not to come home with a medal, as he finished 4th on count back in the U15B Pole Vault with a new PB of 3.31m, and he also finished 5th in the Long Jump with an excellent new PB and Grade 1 performance of 5.87m. Aran Thomas finished 5th in the U17M Shot with 13.11m, and came 9th in the Pole Vault with 3.80m.
Leonie Ashmeade finished 7th in the U20W 60m final in 7.77s, after running a New U20 60m Club Record of 7.70s in the semi-final. Tamara Miller came 6th in the U17W final in 7.86s and Jack Cherry finished 7th in the U17M Long Jump with 6.31m, both almost Grade 1 performances. Olivia Roe just missed reaching the final of the U15G 60m, but ran an excellent 8.05s for 4th place in her semi-final, a Grade 1 performance.
In addition there were Grade 3 performances from Thomas Wood (heats U17M 60m 7.35s), Fraser Stewart-McCarrison (heats U15B 60m 7.95s), Alfie Edwards (heats U15B 60m 7.98s) and Olivia Roe (U15G 200m 27.12s). Meeting Results.

24th Feb 2018. English National Cross Country Championships.

A few young Harriers made the long trek to London to run in the Saucony English National Cross Country Championships at the famous Parliament Hill Fields venue. Abbey Brooke had a good run to finish 55th in the U17 Women's race, and 4th runner home from Yorkshire. In the U15 Girl's race Emily Plimmer was 67th, Suzie Brooke 214th, Millie Hinchcliffe 334th & Harriet Metcalfe 361st, as the team finished 39th overall and 2nd team from Yorkshire. Results Link.

22nd Feb 2018. Second Thornes Park Stadium Indoor Athletics Meeting.
There was another good turnout of young athletes for the second of the Indoor Athletics Meetings at Thornes Park Stadium. There was also a surprise appearance from former international long jumper JJ Jegede, 4th in the European Championships in 2012, having his first competition of the year. He won of course, but Jack Cherry and Chris Harris weren't too far behind, with both clearing 6.36m. U15 Alfie Edwards also jumped a Grade 3 5.46m, as well as recording a fast 50m time of 6.7s. There were also fast 50m sprint times from Thomas Wood with 6.4s, and Jack Cherry & Chris Harris who both ran 6.5s, but the best sprint performance of the evening came from Leonie Ashmeade, who won the ladies race in 6.7s.
In the younger age groups Courtney Newsome showed an impressive turn of speed, easily winning the U11G 50m with 7.9s, and Daniel Akintolu won the U11B LJ with 3.42m. Milly Goddison won the U13G 50m with 7.7s, as well as recording a Grade 3 in the LJ with 4.22m, and Ben Smith had a very good evening, winning the U13B LJ with 4.06m, and easily winning the 50m in a fast 7.4s. 17th/18th Feb 2018. Weekend Roundup of Leading Results.
Abby Ward was our only competitor this year at the British Athletics Indoor Championships at Birmingham, and she did well to finish 4th= in the High Jump with a leap of 1.76m. Meeting Results
Dale Worton was runner up in the Wombwell 5 Mile Road Race, in a time of 27:39 Race Results
Chris Ward finished 13th in the Liversedge Half Marathon from Roberttown, in a time of 81:19 Race Results

11th Feb 2018. Julie Briscoe Runs New Club F40 Half Marathon Record.
Julie Briscoe continued her build up for the Manchester Marathon with a fine run in the Barcelona Half Marathon in Spain, recording a New F40 Club Record of 76 mins 21 seconds, breaking her previous record that she set in Chester last year. In a very high quality race she finished 173rd overall out of over 13,000 finishers, and she won the F40 category. Results Link.

11th Feb 2018. Extraordinary General Meeting to he held on Monday 5th March.
This is a reminder that the club, having been informed by Wakefield Council that the cost of hiring Thornes Park Stadium on club nights is to rise significantly, will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting on Monday 5th March, at 7.00 pm. This is to discuss how to cover this cash shortfall, whether by increasing training fees, or possibly introducing an annual membership fee.
This affects ALL club members, so this is your chance to have your say on the matter. If you wish to express your views then please download the form , and pass onto Andrea in the cabin by Tuesday 20th February.

10th Feb 2018. Good performances from young Pole Vaulters.
Some young pole vaulters from the club competed at the Fox Fundraising Event at Sheffield. Amy and Erin Hunt jumped well, clearing 2.81m & 2.51m respectively, and U15 Alfie Edwards made a big advance to 3.26m, a huge PB and a Grade 2 performance. Meeting Results.

5th Feb 2018. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Amy-Eloise Neale.


For her tremendous run to finish in 4th place for the Great Britain U23 Women's team at the European Cross Country Championships in Slovakia, and her recent 3000m run where she just missed Charlene Thomas' club record, our US based club member Amy-Eloise Neale has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Amy-Eloise!

4th Feb 2018. Mickleden Straddle Fell Race.
A few Harriers ran in the Mickleden Straddle Fell Race, a tough 14.3 miles fell race from Langsett with 2431ft of ascent. Chris Ward did well to finish 10th, and not far behind was new member Ryan Williams in 14th place, and Stephen Tilford in 21st. Jenny Buck was 3rd lady, finishing 29th overall. 4th Feb 2018. Three Medals at Northern Athletics U13/U15 Indoor Champs.
At the Northern Athletics U13/U15 Indoor Championships, at the EIS in Sheffield, we had three medalists and a few finalists. The Hunt twins Amy and Erin won gold and silver in the U15G Pole Vault with 2.90m & 2.30m respectively, and Alfie Edwards won bronze in the U15B Long Jump with 5.48m. Emily Plimmer finished 5th in the U15G 800m in 2m 27.67s, after winning her heat in 2m 26.93s, and Olivia Roe was 8th final in the U15G 60m in 8.26s, after running 8.21s in the heats. 4th Feb 2018. Successes for the Harriers at Dewsbury 10K.
As usual the club had success at the Dewsbury 10k Road Race, with Charlene Thomas winning the ladies race, and the men winning the team prize. Although Charlene has now retired from international competition, she's clearly still pretty fit as she took the Ladies prize in 34:50, finishing 32nd overall. Julie Greenwood was close to the club F45 record with 41:24 and Rebecca Zserdicky made another big improvement to 42:04. The ladies finished 2nd team.
For the men M40 Paul Marchant was first home in 13th place overall, and 2nd in category in the very good time of 33:36. Ben Butler and Stewart Knowles were not far behind in 16th & 22nd places, with good times of 33:56 & 34:15 respectively, and the trio won the team prize. Behind them there were PBs galore from new member Ian Richardson with 35:49, Ross Penny 35:57, Chris Hunter 36:09 and Craig Davidson 37:04. Benjamin Khan 38:08, Glenn Shelley 39:17 & Marwan Khoueiry 39:18 also finished inside 40 minutes. Race Results.
The race was also the 3rd round of the 2018 Club Distance Runners League Championship, and is currently being led by Matthew Hill, after his two outstanding cross country performances.

3rd Feb 2018. West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Champs.
At the West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships at Leeds Grammar School Wakefield Harriers had several runners representing their schools districts. There were some great performances, with several Harriers being selected to run for West Yorkshire Schools at the forthcoming English Schools Cross Country Championships at Temple Newsam Park Leeds on 17th March.
The in-form Matthew Hill had another great run to win the Senior Boys race, in his first year in the age group, and Mark Bostock was a fine 4th. In the Senior Girl's race, Becky Sheppard was an excellent 2nd in her first race for some time, and India Elliott was 8th. Emily Plimmer had an excellent win in the Junior Girls race, and Suzanne Brooke also did well to finish 10th. Abbey Brooke was a fine 3rd in the Intermediate Girls race, with Lucie Hall finishing 7th, and Bailey Mann was 6th in the Intermediate Boys race.
In the Year 7 Boys race Daniel George & Evan Gaskin finished 5th & 6th to qualify for the National final at Prestwold Hall Leicestershire on 24 March. Meeting Results.

2nd Feb 2018. West Yorkshire Track and Field League Dates.
The dates of the 2018 West Yorkshire Track and Field League meetings are as follows :- Sat 14th Apr Wakefield, Wed 2nd May Cleckheaton, Wed 23rd May Wakefield, Wed 13th Jun Cleckheaton, Wed 4th Jul Wakefield, Sun 5th Aug Cleckheaton.

28th Jan 2018. Harriers Competing at Castres Relay in France.


Wakefield Harriers were once again invited by the city's twin town of Castres in France to take part in their long distance relay race, the 36th edition of 'La Ronde Givree'. This was the 10th time we'd participated in the event, and as a thankyou for supporting the event the team were presented with a trophy. We just had one team taking part this year, and those who went had another great weekend. The Mixed team of Hayley Newbound, Peter Young, Jeremy Frain and Andrew Nicholson finished 142nd out of the large entry of 367 teams.

27th Jan 2018. Northern Cross Country Championships at Harewood
There was a new venue for this year's Northern Cross Country Championships, in the grounds of Harewood House near Leeds. The club had a good turnout of younger runners competing, and with some very good performances. Best result came in the U17 Men's race from Matthew Hill, who finished in a superb 4th place. Mark Bostock was a good 36th in the U20 Men's race, and Annabel Mason made a welcome return to competition finishing 64th in the Senior Women's event. Daniel Franks was 114th, Chris Ward 215th & David Brooke 598th in the Senior Men's race.
In the U17 Women's race Abbey Brooke finished 26th, just 2 places ahead of Lucie Hall in 28th, and Emma Preston was 63rd. For the U13 Boys Tristan Wright was 98th, Daniel George 103rd, Euan Gaskin 126th, James McKinlay-Smith 154th & Ben Hall 180th as the team finished 20th team. In the U15 Boy's race Bailey Mann was 87th, Zachary Frankish 123rd, Sam Langley 142nd, Joshua Dawson 155th & Callum Gaunt 167th as the team finished 17th. In the U15 Girl's race Emily Plimmer was 43rd, Suzanne Brooke 61st, Sophie Hall 120th, Millie Hinchcliffe 125th, Jessika Pearson 132nd, Harriet Metcalfe 179th and the team were 10th.

25th Jan 2018. First Thornes Park Stadium Indoor Athletics Meeting.
There was an excellent turnout of young athletes for the first of the Indoor Athletics Meetings at Thornes Park Stadium. U17 Jack Cherry's Long Jump of 6.24m was a Grade 2 performance. Meeting Results.

24th Jan 2018. Sheffield Indoor Open Meeting.
The club had several athletes competing in the Open Meeting at the Sheffield EIS indoor arena, which incorporated the BMC Sheffield Open Series & also the Run Jump Throw Series. There were Grade 2 performances from Amanda Shaw (SW 200m 25.27s), Lucy Holmes (SW SP 11.73m) & Amy Hunt (U15G PV 2.93m) and Grade 3 performances from James Saxton (SM 800m 1m 55.21s) & Erin Hunt (U15G PV 2.53m). 14th Jan 2018. Some great Runs at Brass Monkey Half Marathon.
At the popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon organised by Knavesmire Harriers there were some excellent runs from the small contingent of Harriers lucky enough to get a place in the race. In her first race in her new age group Julie Greenwood ran a new F45 Club Record of 1 hr 31:45, Ben Butler ran a big new PB to finish 18th overall in 1 hr 13:42, and move up the club all-time list, and another to make a big advance was Rebecca Zserdicky with 1 hr 34:27. 13th/14th Jan 2018. Northern Athletics Indoor T&F Championships.
There were some outstanding performances at the Northern Athletics Indoor T&F Championships, at the EIS in Sheffield, including 3 medals and a new club record. Aran Thomas won two of those medals, winning the U17 Men's Pole Vault with 3.70m and coming 2nd in the Shot with 13.88m, and Mark Bostock finished 2nd in a photo-finish in the U20 Men's 1500m in 4m 09.88s.
Leonie Ashmeade ran a New Indoor U20 Club 60m Record of 7.73s, in the heats, as she finished 5th in the final in 7.76s.
In addition there was a Grade 2 performance from Thomas Wood (6th U17M 60m 7.29s), after running 7.24s in the heats, and Grade 3 performances from Amanda Shaw (SF SW 200m 25.53s) and Tamara Miller (5th U17W 60m 8.01m), after running 7.99s in the heats. Results from Power of 10.

13th Jan 2018. Amy-Eloise Neale Close to Club 3000m Record.
USA based Amy-Eloise Neale was only half a second away from the club 3000m record held by Charlene Thomas, as she recorded an impressive new best time of 9 mins 01.96 secs at Seattle in Washington State.

13th Jan 2018. Extraordinary General Meeting to he held on Monday 5th March.
The club has been informed by Wakefield Council that from 1st April the cost of hiring Thornes Park Stadium on club nights is to rise significantly, leaving the club with a cash shortfall. 10th Jan 2018. Indoor Open Meetings at Thornes Park Stadium.
The club are hosting a couple of Indoor Athletics Open Meetings at Thornes Park Stadium. These will be on Thursday 25th January & Thursday 22nd February, starting at 6pm with the U11 events. The events are 50m, 50m Hurdles & Long Jump for all age groups (except U11 hurdles). Enter on night at £2.50 per event.

8th Jan 2018. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Mark Bostock.


For an outstanding series of senior races in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, in only his first year as an U20, and for being selected to run for Yorkshire, Mark Bostock has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Mark!

In the BMC races at the Sheffield Indoor Open Meeting James Saxton got his year off to a flying start with an 800m in 1 min 55.01 secs. Meeting Results
At the Sale Harriers Open Series at Sportcity U15 sisters Amy and Erin Hunt cleared 2.65m & 2.20m respectively in the Pole Vault. Meeting Results

6th Jan 2018. Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
It wasn't a vintage year for the club at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, held once again at Lightwater Valley near Ripon, but there were some good individual results. Matthew Hill continued his excellent form with a superb 3rd place in the U17 Men's race, and Mark Bostock had another great run to finish 6th in the U20 Men's race. They both gained selection for the Yorkshire team with these fine runs.
In the team stakes we had just one team winning medals, with the U17 Ladies team of Abbey Brooke 9th, Lucie Hall 13th & Emma Preston 24th taking home bronze medals. The Senior Men's team were not at full strength, but Daniel Franks 40th, Chris Ward 67th, Ross Penny 92nd, Craig Davidson 113rd, Andrew Nicholson 166th & Dave Brooke 211th all ran solidly to finish 12th club, with Darren Hewitt just behind in 213rd. Hayley Newbound had her first outing as a Senior and did well to finish 50th, whilst in the U20 Women's race India Elliott also had a good run to finish 10th.
In the U15 Girl's race Sophie Hall 19th, Emily Plimmer 31st & Jessika Pearson 44th finished 7th club, and for the boys Boys Bailey Mann 22nd, Samuel Langley 37th & Callum Gaunt 60th finished 12th. In the U13 age group Ben Hall 51st, Euan Gaskin 57th & James McKinley-Smith 60th were 12th club in the Boys' race, and Brodie Ashton was 35th in the Girl's race.

3rd Jan 2018. Club Presentation Evening on Friday 12th January.
Remember that the club is holding its Presentation Evening on Friday 12th January. Trophies and medals will be presented to all age groups, from U11 to Seniors, for the Club Track & Field Championship, for the Club Cross Country Championship, and for the Senior Runner's Distance League.
Even if you haven’t won a medal or trophy, it would be great to see as many club members there as possible. Tickets only cost £5.50, which includes a buffet, and are available from the club cabin at the side of the track on club nights.
