13th Apr 2014. New Club Record from Julie Briscoe in the London Marathon.
There was a good group of Wakefield Harriers competing in this year's Virgin Money London Marathon, amongst the huge field of over 35,000 runners. The first 6 Harriers home all recorded excellent new PBs, but star performer was Julie Briscoe, who finished 2nd lady and 191st overall in the mass start race in a superb New Club Ladies Marathon Record of 2 hrs 39 mins 48 secs, beating her previous record from Chester in 2013. She was also the third British lady when the elite women are included in the results, so she finished 3rd in the British Marathon Championships. Not too far behind, and first male Harrier to finish in 258th, was Stephen Tilford with 2 hrs 42:39, ahead of Chris Ward in 406th with 2 hrs 46:20. Hugh Allen made a big step forward, just outside 3 hours with 3:02:22, and next up was Nicky Steel with 3:21:17 & Craig Orr with 3:27:03, all running PBs. These are the official gun times. These results have shaken up the Club Road Running Records & Rankings a bit.
Martin Holding recorded 3 hrs 41 & Mark Whitehouse 3 hrs 39 as both did well to complete the course after recent illness and injuries. Our congratulations to them all. London Marathon Results.

6th Apr 2014. Wakefield Harriers Ladies Dominant in Wakefield Hospice 10k.

Helen Singleton & Jenny Latham on the rostrum

The Wakefield Hospice 10k road race attracted a large entry of over 1500 runners, with a good turnout of Wakefield Harriers competing in the event, which incorporated the Club 10k Road Race Championship & also the 4th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship. Conditions were quite quite good, although humid, so times weren't superfast, but several Harriers still managed to record PBs on the undulating out and back course along Horbury Road. Full Race Results
Pre-race favourite Helen Singleton won the ladies race for the 5th year running, coming 10th overall in 36:26. Jenny Latham wasn't too far behind in 37:08, finishing 2nd lady in 14th overall, and Helen Beck was 4th lady in 40:13, in 47th place. Next lady in 6th was Sarah Bostwick with 41:58, followed by Alex Potter 42:34, Eileen Mannion 43:55 & Joanne Biltcliffe 44:56. The Wakefield ladies dominated the race, and easily won the team prize.
In the men's race it was U17 William Ingram, running his first ever 10k, who led the Harriers home in 7th place, in a time of 36:03. Next Harrier was Pete McNamara finishing 15th in 37:24, and winning the M50 prize, and he was followed by U20 Cameron Dye 22nd in 38:23. 5th Apr 2014. Huge Turnout at Wakefield Harriers Spring Open Meeting.
The Wakefield Harriers Spring Open Meeting had a record entry of 580 athletes, with visitors from all over the North of England coming to Thornes Park Stadium, attracted by the wide programme of events and the electrical timing. We had over 200 entries on the day, which made it another busy day for all the officials, so a big thanks to all those that helped to make the meeting a success. In fact the meeting has now become so popular that the club will probably have to limit the number of entries next year.
There was a high standard in many of the events, especially some of the throws and sprints, and a good turnout from the Junior Jets. Amongst several good performances from the Harriers was an excellent win from Olivia Roe in the U11 Girls 80m in a very fast 11.69s, and a win in the U11 Shot by Lavinia Gavaghan with 4.63m. Other good U11 winners were Ben Chafer, well clear in the 80m with a New Club U11 Boys 80m Record of 11.53s, and Michael Flood winning the Shot with 5.80m.
From the older athletes there were Grade 2 performances from Molly Dunbavin (2nd U13G Shot 8.05m), Lucy Holmes (2nd SW Shot 10.96m) & Jenna Wheatman (3rd SW Hammer 48.43m), and Grade 3 performances from Rebecca Tolson (1st U17W High Jump 1.60m), Lucy Robinson (1st U17W 1500m 4m 52.63s), Hannah Yates (3rd SW Discus 31.97m) Sarah Drake (5th SW Hammer 41.63m), Aran Thomas (1st U13B Shot 8.45m) & Ben Read (1st U17M 800m 2m 00.39s).
