2013 Club News April - June

30th Jun 2013. Harriers Win Third Match of UK Youth Development U17/U20 League.
The club successfully hosted the third match of the UK Youth Development U17/U20 League Northern Premier 2 Division at Thornes Park, and with home advantage won the match, and thus move into a 2 point lead in the division with just one match remaining. The leading Wakefield performance came from Sally Smith, who for the 2nd week in succession was in record breaking form, running a New U20 400m Club Record of 56.17 secs. There were other fine performances, including Grade 2 performances recorded by Alyce McCurdie (2nd U17 SP 9.70m) & Rebecca Tolson (1st U17 HJ 1.60m), and it was a great overall team effort.

28th Jun 2013. Charlene Thomas Wins 1500m Race in France.
Charlene Thomas got back to winning ways with a 1500m victory at Reims in France, running a season's best of 4 min 12.03 secs.

27th Jun 2013. Reindeer Romp Race 2 from Overton.
Glen Shelley was first Harrier home in 12th place, ahead of Pete McNamara in 14th and Selim Khan in 16th. U17 Faye Beckett was not far behind and finished first lady again, in 18th place overall. Race Results in XL.

25th Jun 2013. More Fast Middle Distance Times at Trafford Grand Prix.
At the latest Trafford Grand Prix at Stretford there were some good middle distance times from some of the Harriers taking part, the highlights being Grade 1 performances recorded by Charlene Thomas (SW 1500m 4m 14.59s) & Sally Smith (U20W 800m 2m 10.38s). Results from Power of 10.

22nd/23rd Jun 2013. Three U20 Club Records at Northern T&F Championships.
There were no fewer than three club records set by U20 athletes at the Northern Track & Field Championships at Manchester. Sally Smith had probably the best weekend of her career by first of all taking silver in the U20 400m, in a New U20 Club Record of 56.29 secs, just beating Mikaela Harrison's record from 2007 by 1/100th of a second. Then the following day she took gold in the 800m, in a New U20 Club Record of 2 mins 09.47 secs, taking more than a second off Lauren Proctor's record from 2008. The third record of the weekend went to U17 Abigail Roberts, who won the U20 Ladies Pole Vault in a New Outright Club Record of 3.80m. This was an outstanding performance that places Abigail top of the U17 Pole Vault UK rankings for 2013 so far.
Other leading performers were Jenna Wheatman (5th Hammer 49.80m), Helen Singleton (9th 1500m 4m 40.62s), Kieran Thackray (3rd U20 Shot 11.80m & 4th U20 Hammer 50.15m), Bethany Sharp (5th U20 400mH 71.32s), William Rotherforth (7th U20 100m 11.21s & 10.99s in the heats) & Zoe Kerins (5th U20 800m 2m 19.14s & 7th U20 400m 61.84s).

22nd Jun 2013. Third Match of UK Youth Development U13/U15 League at Wakefield.
Even though we were hosting the third match of the UK Youth Development U13/U15 League Northern Premier 2 Division at Wakefield, there was still a disappointing turnout from the club's young athletes, and the team again finished 6th. But we did record some 'A' string victories, from Max Rose (U13B 800m 2m 27.9s), Edward Dunbavin (U15B Pole Vault 2.60m), Matthew Hill (U13B High Jump 1.25m), Aderinsola Olaleru (U15G High jump 1.51m), Abby Ward (U15G Hammer 23.11m) & Molly Dunbavin (U13G Shot 6.47m). In addition there was a Grade 1 performance from Alex Rogers (3rd U15B 200m 24.0s) and a Grade 2 performance from Matthew Hill (2nd U13B 1500m 4m 54.5s).

15th/16th Jun 2013. Silver Medal & Club Record for Scott Atkinson at England U20 Champs.
Scott Atkinson had probably the best result of his career so far when he finished 2nd in the 400m at the England U20 Championships at Bedford, which incorporated the trials for the forthcoming European Junior Championships. This should give him a good chance of selection for the Mannerheim International and the European Championships. His time of 47.91 secs was also a New U20 Club 400m Record, beating James Davies' record of 48.1 secs from 2001.
Sally Smith also competed, and finished 5th in her heat of the 800m in 2m 13.10s.

16th Jun 2013. Twenty Harriers Run in Bradford Millennium Way Relay.
The club once again turned out 2 full teams of 10 to compete in the Bradford Millennium Way Relay, a challenging long distance off-road relay of 47 miles, involving 6300 ft of climbing. The 'vets' team performed well as usual, coming 7th overall and 3rd in category out the 45 competing teams. We were able to put out a good ladies team as well this year, and although for several of them it was their first experience of this type of running, they did very well indeed to finish in 25th place overall, and 4th out of the 12 ladies teams taking part. 12th Jun 2013. Fourth Round of West Yorkshire T&F League at Wakefield.
There were some excellent performances at the fourth round of West Yorkshire T&F League at Wakefield, including two new league records. Our high jump star Martyn Bernard has broken many jump records over the years, but he was also a useful runner when he was younger, and had held the U11 600m record since 1995. However his league record was finally broken, and there was also a new U17 Mens Discus league record.
From the Harriers there was almost a new club record, as Max Rose came very close in the U13 Boys 800m with his Grade 1 perfomance of 2 mins 21.53s. Matthew Hill was not too far behind with 2 mins 23.53s, a Grade 2, and another Grade 2 was achieved by Alyce McCurdie with 9.52m in the U17 Womens Shot.

11th Jun 2013. West Yorkshire Schools Track & Field Team Announced.
The West Yorkshire Schools have announced their team for the English Schools Track & Field Championships, to be held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Friday & Saturday, 5th & 6th July. Several Harriers have been selected, and further selections may be made up until the 18th June if qualifying performances have been achieved. Download team details in Word.

9th Jun 2013. Team Win Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 2.
The club had a great team victory at the second round of Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Preston. We had a good turnout of athletes, and scored well across most events to record a narrow win over the host club, and thus open up a two point lead at the top of the table. There were 'A' string wins by Mikaela Harrison (400m 57.3s), Tom Coney (800m 1m 59.5s), Helen Singleton (1500m 4m 38.0s), Bethany Sharp (400mH 67.7s), Hannah Yates (Discus 31.40m), Mark Lindsay (Javelin 53.34m), Abigail Roberts (Pole Vault 2.90m), Rebecca Tolson (High Jump 1.55m), Women’s 4x100m Relay & Women’s 4x400m Relay. There was also a Grade 1 performance from Jenna Wheatman (2nd Hammer 51.35m), and a Grade 2 from Lucy Holmes (2nd Shot 10.76m).

8th Jun 2013. Two Club Records at West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships.
At the West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships at Cleckheaton the club had many athletes competing with distinction for their school districts. The outstanding performances came from Abigail Roberts, who won the Intermediate Girls Pole Vault in a New Championship Best Performance, and a New Outright Club Record of 3.75m, and from William Ingram, who ran a New Club U17 Mens 1500m Steeplechase Record of 4m 36.20s when winning his Intermediate Boys event.
There were no fewer than 19 victories from Wakefield Harriers club members, the club's winners being Scott Atkinson (SB 400m 48.76s), Zoe Kerins (SG 800m 2m 21.34s), Ben Read (IB 800m 1m 59.48s), Bethany Sharp (SG 400mH 68.82s), Patrick Thackray (IB 400mH 61.97m), William Ingram (IB 1500m S/C 4m 36.20s), Rebecca Firth (IG 1500m 4m 49.97s), Abby Ward (JG HJ 1.60m), Rebecca Tolson (IG HJ 1.53m), Jacob Robertson (IB HJ 1.76m), Abigail Roberts (IG PV 3.75m), Edward Dunbavin (JB PV 2.80m), Andrew Jones (IB PV 3.50m), Bethany Porter (SG LJ 5.08m), George Brown (SB LJ 5.72m), Matthew Sherring-Lucas (SB TJ 12.65m), Alyce McCurdie (IG SP 9.46m), Hannah Yates (SG DT 30.99m) & Kieran Thackray (SB HT 52.25m). 4th Jun 2013. More Fast Middle Distance Times at Trafford Grand Prix.
There were some more fine middle distance performances at the Trafford Grand Prix at Stretford, with Charlene Thomas running 2m 08.1s in her first 800m of the year. Chris Woodger made good progress with 1m 54.99s in his 800m, and amongst several PBs achieved by the younger athletes, Lucy Robinson recorded a Grade 2 1500m performance of 4m 46.65s, just ahead of teammate Rebecca Firth, and Ben Read was close to a Grade 2 with 2m 00.00s when winning his 800m. 2nd Jun 2013. Second Match of UK Youth Development U17/U20 League.
At the second match of the UK Youth Development U17/U20 League Northern Premier 2 Division at South Leeds, the club had another great result, finishing in 2nd place again, and taking the overall lead in the division. Amongst many fine individual results as well, Grade 2 performances were recorded by William Rotherforth (2nd U20 B 100m 11.11s), U17 Kieran Thackray (1st U20 Hammer 51.91m) & Abigail Roberts (1st U17W Pole Vault 3.20m).

1st Jun 2013. Second Match of UK Youth Development U13/U15 League.
There was a disappointing turnout from the club's young athletes at the second match of the UK Youth Development U13/U15 League Northern Premier 2 Division, and the team finished 6th once again. However the athletes who competed all did very well indeed, with several new PBs recorded, particularly in the middle distance events. U15 Abby Ward produced the best performance with her Grade 1 High Jump of 1.63m.

1st Jun 2013. Fast Middle Distance Times at BMC Grand Prix at Manchester.
Some of the club's middle distance runners were in action at the BMC Grand Prix meeting at Sportscity in Manchester. Jack Hallas & Helen Singleton recorded fast 1500m times with 3m 50.99s & 4m 36.10s, and U20 Sally Smith was close to her best (and Lauren Proctor's U20 club record) with 2m 11.07s in the 800m. 1st Jun 2013. Club Distance Runners League Championship Round 6.
As last year we included a local Parkrun in this year’s Club Distance Runners League Championship. This year we chose Dewsbury, and Stephen Tilford was first home, winning the 5 Km race outright in 17:46. U17 William Ingram was 4th in 18:19 & Selim Khan 6th in 18:59. Hugh Allen, who was 6th Harrier home in this race, now leads the championship after the first 6 races. Race Results.

30th May 2013. Reindeer Romp Race 1 from Overton.
The popular Reindeer Romp Race series from Overton had a good turnout of 125 runners for the first race. Paul Robinson was first Harrier home in 13th place, ahead of Pete McNamara in 21st and Glen Shelley in 26th. U17 Faye Beckett had a good run to finish first lady overall in 31st place. 25th May 2013. Annabel Mason Continues Her Success on the Fells.
Annabel Mason continued her success on the fells as she was a clear winner of the Junior Womens race at the Trials for the European Fell Championships at Keswick, thus enabling her to defend her European Mountain Running title at Borovets in Bulgaria on 7th July. Championship Website
The previous weekend the 16th UKA Fell Inter Counties at Settle Hills in Yorkshire turned out to be a golden day for team Yorkshire, with Annabel being one of 3 individual winners for the county. She easily won the U18 race, leading a clean sweep of medals for Yorkshire, as they comfortably won the team title.

26th/27th May 2013. Distance Runners Weekend Roundup.
Julie Briscoe was 3rd lady and 21st overall in the Edinburgh Marathon, in the excellent time of 2 hrs 45 mins 12 secs. She was 2nd at the halfway point, which she passed in under 1 hr 20 mins, and lost a place in the run in, but it was still an outstanding performance. Martin Holding and Craig Orr also completed the marathon, recording chip times of 3 hrs 24 mins & 3 hrs 53 mins.
Helen Singleton was invited to compete for the North of England in the televised Great Manchester Run 10k, against a top class field, and finished 21st lady recording 36:34.
The club had three runners competing in the streets of London in the BUPA London 10k Road Race. Andy Cartwright recorded 35:56, and from our southern based ladies Jasmine Kerry was first home with 40:45, ahead of Minna Jones-Walters with 41:05. Results from Power of 10.

25th/26th May 2013. 31 Medals & Club Record Equalled at Yorkshire T&F Championships.
At the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships at Cudworth the club had a good showing once again, with 31 medals won. Amongst many fine performances our most successful athlete was U20 Scott Atkinson, winning two gold medals in the 400m in 49.02s & 800m in 1m 54.17s, as well as good times of 11.10s & 21.97s in the top quality sprint events. Another highlight came from U17 Abigail Roberts, who equalled her club Pole Vault record with her winning clearance of 3.70m.
In total there were 8 Yorkshire Gold medals for Bethany Sharp (U20W 400m Hurdles 66.69s), Hannah Yates (U20W Hammer 27.69m), Scott Atkinson (U20M 400m 49.02s & 800m 1m 54.17s), William Rotherforth (U20M Triple Jump 12.52m), Abigail Roberts (U17W Pole Vault 3.70m)), William Ingram (U17M 1500m S/C 4m 50.46s) & Ben Read (U17M 800m 2m 00.72s).
8 Silver medals were won by Lucy Holmes (SW Shot 10.30m & Long Jump 4.82m), Sally Smith (U20W 800m 2m 14.02s), Kieran Thackray (U20M Hammer 50.60m), Rebecca Tolson (U17W High Jump 1.61m), Rebecca Firth (U17W 1500m 4m 49.35s & Andrew Jones (U17M Pole Vault 3.40m), and 16 bronze medals were won by Mikaela Harrison (SW 400m 56.90s), Jenna Wheatman (SW Hammer 49.82m), Jennifer Ibbitson (SW Pole Vault 2.60m & Discus 28.24m), Mark Lindsay (SM Javelin 52.92m), Gareth Hepworth (SM 400m 56.74s), Grace Eyles (U20W 200m 25.68s), Sally Smith (U20W 400m 57.60s), Hannah Yates (U20W Discus 29.51m), Scott Atkinson (U20M 200m 21.97s), Bethany Porter (U20W Long Jump 5.15m), Sophie Woollin (U17W 300m 42.99s), Lucy Robinson (U17W 1500m 4m 51.15s), Patrick Thackray (U17M 400m Hurdles 60.92s), Niamh Docherty (U15G 300m 44.74s) & Dylan Roberts (U15B Long Jump 5.25m).

25th May 2013. Charlene Thomas Finishes 5th in Westminster Road Mile Race.
Charlene Thomas took on many of England's leading international runners and finished 5th in the BUPA Westminster Road Mile Race in the streets of central London, in a time of 4 mins 39 secs.

22nd May 2013. Third Round of West Yorkshire T&F League at Cleckheaton.
There was another good turnout of athletes for the third round of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Cleckheaton. After 3 meetings Wakefield Harriers are once again in pole position. Results from Cleckheaton :- Mens and Womens.

19th May 2013. Scott Atkinson Close to U20 400m Club Record.
At the Loughborough International meeting Scott Atkinson was close to the U20 club record for the 400m, winning his race in a new PB of 48.29 secs, just 0.2 seconds off James Davies' time from 2001. Results from Power of 10.

18th May 2013. Fast 1500m Times at BMC Grand Prix at Solihull.
The club's two leading middle distance runners were in action, recording fast 1500m times at the BMC Grand Prix at Solihull. International Charlene Thomas opened her outdoor track season by winning the womens race with 4m 14.38, and Jack Hallas was close to his best with 3m 47.68s as he came 6th in the mens 'B' race. U20 Sally Smith also had a good start to her season, recording 2m 12.02s in the womens 800m. Results from Power of 10.

15th May 2013. Askern 10k Road Race.
The Askern 10k road race was the 5th race in this year’s Club Distance Runners League Championship. M45 Paul Robinson was first Harrier home in 39:18, followed by M45 Hugh Allen with 39:31 and M50 Mark Whitehouse with 40:30. Nick Steel was our first lady with 41:49, ahead of Joanne Biltcliffe with 44:35. Results from Power of 10.

14th May 2013. Fast 800m Time from Jack Hallas at BMC Gold Standard Races.
Jack Hallas opened his outdoor track season with a fast 800m at the BMC Gold Standard Races at Stretford, finishing 3rd in the mens 800m in 1 min 51.18 secs. Chris Woodger was close to his best with 4m 00.71s in the 1500m, and Helen Singleton recorded 4 mins 39.48 secs in a mixed 1500m race.

13th May 2013. New Members Joining Wakefield Harriers in May.

12th May 2013. Club Host First Match of New Yorkshire & District League.
The club hosted the first round of the new Yorkshire & District Track & Field League for young athletes, at Thornes Park Stadium, and in a very close match were just beaten by Cleethorpes & District AC by half a point!
Match Result :- Cleethorpes & District AC 296.5, Wakefield District H&AC 296, Holmfirth Harriers & AC 264.5, Halifax Harriers & AC 239. Full Results.

12th May 2013. Julie Briscoe Wins Sheffield Half Marathon.
Disappointed at having to miss the London Marathon because of illness, Julie Briscoe returned to form to win the Sheffield Half Marathon in 76:17, finishing 21st overall out of a field of several thousand. Nicky Steel also had a solid run recording 92:44.
On a popular day for half marathons Katie McHale had her first attempt at the distance, and recorded the fine time of 89:56 in the Leeds Half Marathon , which puts her 8th on the club all time list. And at the Chester Half Marathon Joanne Biltcliffe recorded 99:10.

5th May 2013. Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 1.
The club had a great result at the first round of Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Leigh. In spite of missing athletes in several events the team finished in an excellent 2nd place in a very close match. There were 'A' string wins by Scott Atkinson (400m 49.7s) & Mikaela Harrison (400m 57.6s), and U17 Abigail Roberts tied the winning height in the Pole Vault as she came 2nd with 3.60m. There were also Grade 2 performances from Mark Lindsay (2nd Javelin 52.40m) & Jenna Wheatman (2nd Hammer 49.85m).

4th-6th May 2013. Harriers Competing at BUCS Championships.
A handful of Wakefield Harriers were representing their universities and colleges at the BUCS Championships at Bedford. The best performances were from Lucy Holmes who threw 10.65m to finish 9th in the Shot final, and Chris Woodger, who was close to his PB with 1m 56.74s in the semi-final of the 800m. 4th May 2013. First Match of UK Youth Development U13/U15 League.
The club's young athletes competed at the first match of the new UK Youth Development U13/U15 League Northern Premier 2 Division, the new league which replaces the Young Athletes League. In the match at the South Leeds Stadium the club were not at full strength and finished 6th, with the leading performer from the club being U15 Abby Ward with her Grade 1 High Jump of 1.60m.

1st May 2013. Second Round of West Yorkshire T&F League at Wakefield.
There was a huge turnout of athletes for the second round of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Thornes Park Stadium, with the last event on the programme not finishing until 10 o'clock! Results from Wakefield :- Mens and Womens.

28th Apr 2013. Great Result in First Match of UK Youth Development U17/U20 League.
At the first match of the new UK Youth Development U17/U20 League Northern Premier 2 Division at Pitreavie in Scotland, the club had a great result, finishing in 2nd place against big city and combined teams. This new league replaces the National Junior League, and has 2 athletes per event for U20 & U17 athletes, and additional U17 only events with 1 athlete. The club was well represented in nearly all of the events, for a great overall team effort. Conditions were not good, so most performances were down, but there was still a Grade 1 from U17 Abigail Roberts with 3.60m in the Pole Vault, and a Grade 2 jump of 3.65m from U17 Michael Jones in the mens Pole Vault.

28th Apr 2013. Good Performances from Wakefield Harriers on the Roads.
Stephen Tiford had the best result of his running career so far, when he finished 2nd in the 'Marathon of the North' at Sunderland. He ran a good time of 2:45:34, which earns him a place in the club all-time lists. Race Results. Download Mens All Time Road Running Rankings.
Julie Greenwood ran her second club over-40 record in the space of two weeks, when she recorded a New Club F40 Half Marathon Record of 1:29:52, when finishing 96th overall and 9th lady in the North Linconshire Half Marathon at Scunthorpe. Results from Power of 10. Download Womens Club Records.
M50 Mark Whitehouse experienced much better weather for this year's Manchester Marathon than he did last year, and ran a fine new PB of 3:16:25. James Morris also completed the course in 3:39:10, and Emma Pearson did well to run 4:01:44. Results from Power of 10.

27th Apr 2013. Two Harriers Complete the Gruelling Three Peaks Fell Race.
Two hardy Harriers took part in the gruelling 24 mile Three Peaks Fell Race, which includes climbing the famous Yorkshire peaks of Ingleborough, Penyghent & Whernside, and this year was run in cold conditions which included a hailstone shower. Andrew Sykes finished 394th and Alan Spurr in his first attempt at the race finished 556th out of the 743 starters. Results on the Three Peaks website.

21st Apr 2013. New Club Pole Vault Record from Abigail Roberts.
At the Sheffield Lord Mayor's Open Meeting 15 year old Abigail Roberts improved her PB for the the 3rd time so far this season, and in doing so jumped a new outright Club Pole Vault record of 3.70m, beating the Senior Women's Record that had been held by Caroline Nutt since 2003. So she becomes the first U17 athlete to break a senior club record since 1976, when Alan Slack long jumped 7.25m as an U17. Her performance also puts her 2nd= on the UK U17 Pole Vault rankings for 2013, so our congratulations to Abigail.
There were several other Harriers competing, the best performances coming from Mikaela Harrison making an encouraging season's debut with 58.50s in the 400m, U17 Andrew Jones close to his best with 3.60m in the Pole Vault, and Emily Tinsley recorded 1.50m in the High Jump. Meeting Results.

21st Apr 2013. Wakefield Harriers Competing in the Virgin London Marathon.
There was a good group of Wakefield Harriers competing in this year's Virgin London Marathon, amongst the huge field of over 35,000 runners. Fastest from the club this year was Carl Quinn with a fine time of 2:54:09 (chip time 2:53:43), and Helen Beck was our first lady, making a big advance with a new PB of 3:12:42 (ct 3:12:32), in spite of running with an injury. Nicky Steel also made a big improvement with 3:26:17 (ct 3:24:55), and these times move Helen & Nicky up to 4th and 7th respectively on the club All Time Road Running Rankings.
Hugh Allen recorded 3 hrs 18, Paul Robinson 3 hrs 24 & Daniel Benjamin 3 hrs 56 (chip times), and our former international 400m runner Elaine Sutcliffe also did well to complete the course in 4 hrs 11. Our congratulations to them all. London Marathon Results.

21st Apr 2013. Annabel Mason Finishes 2nd in London Mini Marathon U17 Ladies Race.
Annabel Mason was invited once again to take part in the London Mini Marathon, and did very well to finish 2nd in the U17 Ladies race, behind her long-term rival Bobby Clay. The race also incorporated the British Athletics Road Championships, so it was another medal to add to Annabel's growing collection. She also helped the Yorkshire & Humberside team to victory, and Rebecca Firth also scored for the team with a fine 46th place finish. Lucy Robinson came 54th in the U15 Girls Race, and was 5th counter for the regional team that came 9th. Race Results.

14th Apr 2013. New Club Records from Abigail Roberts & Abby Ward.
There were several Harriers getting in some early season competition by competing in open meetings, and amongst some good results the highlights were two new club records.
At the Wigan Harriers Open Meeting Abigail Roberts jumped a new U17 & U20 Club Pole Vault record of 3.60m, and this height also equals the Senior Women's Record that has been held by Caroline Nutt since 2003. Meeting Results.
At the Kingston upon Hull Spring Open Meeting Abby Ward equalled her club U15 High Jump record with a 1.65m clearance. The other leading performance was from Jenna Wheatman, who threw the senior Hammer 49.42m. Meeting Results.

14th Apr 2013. National Young Athletes Road Relays at Sutton Park.
The club had just one team competing at the National Young Athletes Road Relays at Sutton Park, the event that was postponed from last autumn. The U17 Men's team of William Ingram, Cameron Dye and Daniel Franks finished a very creditable 17th team, and first team home from Yorkshire. Full Race Results

14th Apr 2013. Team Victories for Mens & Ladies Teams in Wakefield Hospice 10k.
The Wakefield Hospice 10k road race attracted its usual large field of well over 1000 runners, with a good turnout of Wakefield Harriers competing in the event, which incorporated the Club 10k Road Race Championship & also the 3rd round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship. Conditions were quite blustery, but several Harriers still managed to record PBs on the undulating out and back course along Horbury Road, helping the club to team victories for both the mens & ladies teams. Pre-race favourite Helen Singleton won the ladies race for the 4th year running, coming 18th overall in 35:43. Katie McHale was 8th lady, dipping under 40 mins for the first time with 39:59 & Julie Greenwood was 12th lady in 41:21, as the Wakefield ladies won the team prize. Julie's time is a New Club F40 Record.
In the men's race it was a close race between the club's leading trio, but in the last mile Chris Price pulled clear to retain the Club 10k Championship Trophy, finishing 8th overall in 34:42. As last year he was followed home by Chris Ward running 34:53 in 11th place, with U20 Matthew O'Connor not far behind recording 35:04 in 14th, and Stephen Tilford also recording a quality time with 35:34. With such good packing the men also won the team prize. Other Harriers to break the 40 minute barrier were Alistair Robinson 38:42, Glenn Shelley 39:19, Tony Smith 39:30, M45 Chris Rippon 39:45 & M45 Paul Robinson 39:54.

13th Apr 2013. First Round of West Yorkshire T&F League at York.
The windy conditions gave the sprinters a boost, with a new league record of 10.77 secs in the men's 100m, and fast times of 12.48s in the 100m & 25.89s in the 200m from U20 Grace Eyles. The club's only winners were Holly Kitching (U15G 1500m 5m 31.97s), Zoe Kerins (SW 800m 2m 28.12s) & Steven Thorpe (SM LJ 5.22m).

7th Apr 2013. Distance Runners Roundup of Leading Results.
At the at the Hornsea One Third Marathon Chris Ward had a good run to finish 4th, and Joanne Biltcliffe finished 86th overall and took 1st prize in the F35 category. Download Race Results.
At the Bournemouth Half Marathon Minna Jones-Walters had a break from her rowing to take part in her first race for some time, and ran a creditable 1 hr 36:32 to finish 13th lady and 156th overall out of over 1300 runners. Race results

6th Apr 2013. Another Successful Wakefield Harriers Spring Open Meeting.
The Wakefield Harriers Spring Open Meeting had another good turnout of 435 athletes, with visitors from all over the North of England coming to Thornes Park Stadium, attracted by the wide programme of events and the electrical timing. We had over 160 entries on the day, which made it another busy day for all the officials, so many thanks to all those that helped to make the meeting a success.
There was a high standard in many of the events, especially some of the throws and sprints, with the meeting highlight being a 70m + Hammer throw. Amongst several good performances from the Harriers the highlight was a New U17 & U20 Women's Club Pole Vault Record of 3.55m from Abigail Roberts. There were additional Grade 1 performances from Abby Ward (1st U15G High Jump 1.60m) & Jenna Wheatman (1st SW Hammer 50.54m). Meeting Results

4th Apr 2013. Julie Briscoe tops Athletics Weekly Masters Cross Country Rankings.
Athletics Weekly has for the first time produced 'Merit Rankings' for the winter's cross country runners, and after winning the British Masters Cross Country Championships Julie Briscoe has been given top ranking in the women's over 35 age group. U17 National winner Annabel Mason has been ranked 2nd in the U17 age group, and 9th in the U20 age group after her phenomenal winter.
