30th Sep/1st Oct 2017. Weekend Roundup of Leading Results.
Ben Butler ran in the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, and did well to finish 7th, recording a new PB of 2h 50m 50s. Race Results.
Running in his first Half Marathon, at Pontefract, Daniel Franks ran well to finish 5th in 1h 20m 51s. Race Results.
Thomas Wood and Olivia Roe were in action at the Denis Lumbard Memorial Open Meeting at Grimsby, and both recorded double victories in the 100m & 200m. Meeting Results

19th Sep 2017. Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting.
The Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting is on Monday 2nd October at 7 pm at Thornes Park Stadium. This is your chance to have your say about the running of the club, and to choose the Committee members for the next 12 months. The club really does need some new people to come forward, to help with the organisation of the club, and the events it puts on.
All nominations for Committee positions should be handed in at the cabin before the meeting. The AGM is open to all Club Members.

16th Sep 2017. Northern Athletics Autumn Road Relay Championships.
The club had an excellent turnout and a good day at the Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships, at Sports City Manchester.
The Senior Men had their best result for many years, with the 'A' team of James Saxton, Paul Marchant, Dale Worton, Mark Bostock, Daniel Franks & Matthew O'Connor finishing 19th (and 3rd Yorkshire club), and so qualifying for the England Championships. James got them off to a great start on leg 1 in 7th place, running one of the fastest times of the day. The 'B' team of Jack Turner, Stewart Knowles, Ross Penny, Benjamin Khan, Stephen Tilford & Christopher Ward were also well up in 66th, and the 'C' team of Jonathan Prideau, Daz Hewitt, Jeremy Frain, Michael Page, Andy Nicholson & David Brooke also did well to finish 106th team out of the 130 competing teams. The Ladies of Lucy Robinson, Sarah Bostwick, Hayley Newbound & Joanne Biltcliffe also did well to finish 24th team. Women's Results.
We also had a great turnout of young athletes competing, and they all did well. In the U17 Ladies race Abbey Brooke, Lucie Hall & Emma Preston finished in a very good 10th place. The U17 Men's team of Matthew Hill, Liam Grosse & Daniel Kesete were 19th, after Matthew got them off to a flying start with 3rd place on leg 1, which turned out to be 4th= fastest of the day. The U15 Boy's team of Bailey Mann, Callum Gaunt & Josh Dawson were 24th, and for the U13 Boy's the 'A' team of Tristan Wright, Euan Gaskin & Daniel George were 18th, with James Mckinlay-Smith & Alexander Bostwick turning out for an incomplete 'B' team.



For the U15 Girls pictured above, the 'A' team of Suzanne Brooke, Lydia Barker & Emily Plimmer were an excellent 9th, and they were the first team to finish from Yorkshire. Sophie Hall, Jessika Pearson & Emily Wright also did well to finish 16th for the 'B' team in that race.

10th Sep 2017. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Championships.
The West Yorkshire Track & Field League came to it's conclusion with the Championships at Cleckheaton, and there were some good performances recorded by Wakefield athletes. There were Grade 4 or better performances from Lucy Holmes (1st SW SP 11.34m), Amy Hunt (1st U13G LJ 4.30m & 1st SP 7.64m), Erin Hunt (2nd U13G LJ 4.09m), Isabel McElhatton (3rd U13G SP 6.87m), Olivia Roe (2nd U15G 100m 13.36s & 3rd 200m 27.70s), George Lowrie (1st U15B HJ 1.55m) & Richard Flood (1st U17M 200m 23.92s). Fast improving U20 Mark Bostock ran a fine PB in the Men's 800m in 1m 58.60s, as well as winning the 1500m.

10th Sep 2017. Some Good Half Marathon Times at Vale of York.
There were some good Half Marathon times and several PBs achieved at the Vale of York Half Marathon, from Sherburn in Elmet. Ben Butler went to the top of this year's club rankings, finishing an excellent 11th in a new PB of 77:00. Stewart Knowles & Chris Hunter also had fine runs, finishing 29th & 30th in 79:59 & 81:08 respectively, and new member Ross Penny finished 40th in 81:49, in his first race in Wakefield's colours.
Alex Potter was our first lady home in a time of 92:35, and she was followed by Natalie Duffield-Moore in 96:41 & Joanne Biltcliffe in 97:11. Race Results from Power of 10.
The race was also the 13th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, where Richard West leads, ahead of Ian Shipley and Ben Butler, with Joanne Biltcliffe leading the ladies.

4th Sep 2017. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Richard Gayle.


For his huge contribution to the Northern Track & Field League team, leading the team by example, and competing in 25 events over 5 matches, Richard Gayle has been chosen as our Athlete of the Month. Well done Richard!

4th Sep 2017. New Members Joining Wakefield Harriers in September.

3rd Sep 2017. Harriers Competing in the Inter-League Match.
There was an excellent representation from the Harriers competing for the "Yorkshire & District Young Athletes League" team in the inter-league match against the "North East Youth Development League" at Middlesbrough. Thomas Wood was very close to the U15 Boy's club records at both the 100m and 200m with his excellent times of 11.59s & 23.26s, both Grade 1 performances. Aran Thomas recorded a Grade 1 in the U17M Discus with 42.90m and James Simms also recorded a Grade 1 in the U15B LJ with his winning leap of 5.84m.

3rd Sep 2017. Wakefield Men Finish 4th in Leeds Country Way Relay.
The club once again had 2 teams of 12 runners participating in the 64 mile Leeds Country Way Relay, a long distance off-road event where the runners run in pairs, over 6 stages of between 9.7 and 11.8 miles. Both teams did well, with the Men's 'A' team finishing 4th, the best result from the club for many years. James Saxton & Matthew O'Connor took the prize for the fastest pairing on leg 6, Chris Hunter & Craig Davidson were 2nd fastest on leg 2, Paul Marchant & Ben Butler were 3rd fastest on leg 1, and Chris Ward & Ross Penny were 3rd fastest on leg 5. The 'B' team, a mixture of men and ladies, also did well to finish 24th team overall out of the 55 competing teams.

2nd/3rd Sep 2017. BMAF Multi-Events & Northern Masters Championships.
At the BMAF Decathlon/Heptathlon & Throws Pentathlon Championships, including the North of England Masters Championships at Sheffield, Wakefield Harriers won several titles. Andrew Cartwright won the Northern M35 1500m in 4m 19.20s, and Lynsie Whyke won the F35 Long Jump with 4.74m & Triple Jump with 10.39m. Jennifer Ibbitson won the F60 Throws Pentathlon, and in the individual events won the Shot with 8.74m, Discus with 25.00m & Hammer with 32.76m. Linda Ridsdale won the F65 Throws Pentathlon, and in the individual events won the F65 Discus with 14.95m & Hammer with 23.87m. Meeting Results

26th/27th Aug 2017. Silver & Club Record for Leonie at EA Championships.



Leonie Ashmeade had the best result of her career so far, when she finished 2nd in the U17 100m at the England Athletics U15 & U17 Championships at Bedford, in a time of 12.07s. She was even quicker in her semi-final, which she won in a New Club U17 Women's 100m Record of 11.98s, just beating her previous record by 1/100th of a second.
Aran Thomas finished 10th in the U17M Discus with 42.69m, and also 10th the Shot with 12.27m. Olivia Roe & Tamara Miller ran 13.28s & 13.62s respectively in the heats of the U15G 100m. Meeting Results

26th/27th Aug 2017. Yorkshire County Combined Events Championships.

There was success for some of our young all round athletes at the Yorkshire County Combined Events Championships at Cudworth. George Lowrie won the U15 Boy's Pentathlon with 1921 points, with Alfie Edwards finishing 2nd with 1732 points. In the U13 Girl's Track and Field Triathlon Amy Hunt finished 3rd with 1273 points, with sister Erin 8th with 1045 points. Alexander Bostwick was the winner of the U13 Boy's event. Results Link.

20th Aug 2017. Harriers Win Northern League Division 1 Promotion Match.



After the disappointment of finishing 5th in the Northern Men's & Women's League Division 1, the team had to compete in the Northern League Division 1 Promotion Match, against the winners of the four 2nd divisions, to try and retain their position in Division 1. They won this match at Trafford with a great team performance, that ensures they compete in the top flight again next season. With some leading U17 athletes not available due to the clash with the Northern U17 T&F Championships, and athletes away on holiday, many of those taking part had to compete in several events to secure as many points as possible, so it was a great team effort.
There were 'A' string victories from Nathaniel Davis (100m 11.2s), Amanda Shaw (100m 12.6s & 200m 25.5s), Mikaela Harrison (400mH 67.2s), Sarah Drake (HT 39.49m), Hannah Yates (DT 29.05m), Aderinsola Olaleru (HJ 1.50m) and the Relay team of Amanda Shaw, Racheal Shaw, Mikaela Harrison & Lynsie Whyke who won both the 4x100m & 4x400m events.
Also recording a Grade 3 performance was U17 Miles Sizer with 52.8s in the 400m, and special mention must also be made of Team Manager Richard Gayle, who even though in his 50th year competed in five events. 19th/20th Aug 2017. Two Medals at Northern U13/U15/U17 Championships.
At the Northern Athletics U13/U15/U17 Track & Field Championships at Leigh the club had a few athletes competing, and they came away with a couple of medals, and several near misses. Aran Thomas came 2nd in the U17M Discus with a throw of 40.56m, was 4th in the Javelin with 48.38m, and 4th in the Shot with 12.75m. Leonie Ashmeade won bronze in the U17W 100m in 12.33s, and Gabrielle Dyson was another 4th place finisher, with 2.60m in the U17W Pole Vault.

15th Aug 2017. Some Quality Middle Distance Times at Trafford.
There were some quality middle distance times recorded at the Trafford Grand Prix at Stretford. U20 Mark Bostock got very close to the 4 minute barrier in the 1500m, when he came 2nd in 4m 00.9s behind former Olympian and veteran world record holder Anthony Whiteman. Our own veteran Andy Cartwright also recorded PB of 4m 13.04s in the same race. Also running a Grade 3 was U15G Emily Plimmer running 2m 22.52s in her 800m. Meeting Results

15th Aug 2017. West Yorkshire Cross Country League Dates.
Here are the dates for this year's West Yorkshire Cross Country League :-
Sat 14th October – Wakefield, Sun 29th October – Nunroyd, Sun 19th November - Spenborough, Sat 9th December – Keighley.
The cost this year is £15 for Senior & U20 runners, and £8 for the younger age groups, for the 4 race series. Entries have to be done by the club, so please see your team manager or coach in good time if you want to take part. WYL Website Link.
Please note that the first race at Thornes Park incorporates the Club Cross Country Championships, so to compete in that you must enter the League, and there are NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY. Winners in all age groups will receive a trophy, with medals also for the first three home.

13th Aug 2017. Julie Briscoe Wins the Newark Half Marathon.
Julie Briscoe won her second Half Marathon race of the year, finishing 23rd overall and first lady in the Newark Half Marathon. She won the ladies race by over a mile, in the fine time of 81 minutes 38 seconds. Results from Power of 10.

13th Aug 2017. Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting.
Conditions were good for the Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting, held at a sunny Thornes Park Stadium, and excellent performances were achieved by some of the Harriers. Best of all was another New U13 Girls Club Pole Vault Record of 2.70m by Amy Hunt, beating her previous record set in April. Amy also recorded a Grade 3 in the Long Jump with 4.30m.
There was a Grade 1 performance from Thomas Wood (U15B 100m 11.67s), Grade 2 performances from Amanda Shaw (SW 200m 12.43s), Thomas Wood (U15B 200m 24.02s & LJ 5.69m) & Terrell Williams (U15B 100m 11.94s & 200m 24.29s), and Grade 3 performances from Emily Plimmer (U15G 800m 2m 23.44s) & Amanda Shaw (SW 100m 12.43s).
We also had a good turnout of Junior Jets, with some of them enjoying their first proper competition. Top performers amongst the U11 athletes were Milly Goodison (1st 75m 11.32s), Courtney Newsome (2nd 600m 2m 02.17s) and Danny Kerins (1st SP 5.37s).

7th Aug 2017. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Thomas Wood.



For recently breaking the U15 Boy's 300m Club Record with a time of 39.1 seconds, the Club Committee have decided that Thomas Wood is the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Thomas!

6th Aug 2017. West Yorkshire T&F League Round 6.
The sixth and final round of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League was held at Thornes Park Stadium. For Amy Hunt there were 2 graded wins with 12.81s in the U13G 70m Hurdles, and 7.11m in the Shot. There were also graded wins for Emily Plimmer in the U15G 1500m in 5m 11.11s, Alfie Edwards with 5.17m in the U15B LJ, and Matthew Hill with 9m 34.93s in the 3000m. In the U11 age group there were wins for Milly Goodison in the Girl's 75m, and Kian Slatter in the Boy's LJ.

In the final league standings George Lowrie won the U15B category, ahead of Alfie Edwards, and we also had a 1-2 in the U17M category, from Matthew Hill & Aran Thomas. Mark Bostock was 2nd in the U20M age group, and Stephen Thorpe was 2nd senior. For the girls Milly Goodison was the U11G winner, Amy Hunt was the U13G winner and Hayley Newbound was 2nd in the U20 age group.
Wakefield Harriers were once again overall West Yorkshire T&F League Champions, so well done to all those who took part.

5th Aug 2017. Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 4.
We were short once again in many of the events in the 4th match of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Sheffield, but great credit to all the athletes who competed for the club, to help the team finish 4th. All performed valiantly, with many taking part in several events to secure as many points as possible.
There was just one 'A' string victory from Chris Harris in the Triple Jump with 12.77m, and that turned out to be our best event, with Alfie West also winning the 'B' event with 12.18m. Alfie also won the 'B' 100m in 11.57s, and there were other 'B' string victories from U17 Matthew Hill in the 1500m & Rachael Shaw in the 200m.
There were also Grade 3 performances from Scott Atkinson (200m 22.36s), Ben Read (800m 1m 56.2s), James Saxton (5000m 14m 57.90s), Luke Thackray (JT 49.92m), Amanda Shaw (100m 12.61s & 200m 25.26s), Sarah Drake (HT 41.02m) & Lucy Holmes (SP 11.13m).
Match Result :- Sheffield 393, York 360.5, Wigan 359, Wakefield 328.5, West Cheshire 326, Preston 244.

After this result the team ended up 5th in the division, by the closest of margins, and so have to take part in the playoff match to try and retain their place in Division 1. But nevertheless, well done to all the athletes who've competed for the team this season, and thank you from the club to team managers Sally Holmes and Richard Gayle for a job well done.
Final League Positions :- Wigan 20 (1528.5 pts), City of York 16 (1440.5), City of Sheffield 14 (1317.5), West Cheshire 13.5 (1428), Wakefield Harriers 13.5 (1399.5), Preston Harriers 7 (1208).

2nd Aug 2017. ‘Flat Cap 5’ Off-Road Race Results.
The popular ‘Flat Cap 5’ off-road race from Dewsbury had 13 Wakefield Harriers taking part. The fast improving Benjamin Khan was first Harrier home, finishing an excellent 4th. He was followed by Ian Shipley in 15th, and the first M45, and Peter McNamara in 24th, who was the first M55. Shaun Mollart was another category winner, being the first M50 in 33rd position. Joanne Biltcliffe was our first lady home, finishing 4th lady in 60th place, out of 256 finishers.

The race was also the 12th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Richard West now leads, ahead of Ian Shipley.

29th/30th Jul 2017. England Athletics Senior AAA Championships
Just two Wakefield Harriers were competing this year at the CAU Inter-County Championships at Bedford, which incorporated the England Athletics Senior AAA Championships. Amanda Shaw ran 25.45s in the heats of the 200m, and Lucy Robinson ran 4m 41.01s in the final of the 1500m. Meeting Results.

25th Jul 2017. Excellent Times in BMC races at Stretford.
There were some excellent middle distance times recorded at the BMC Grand Prix at Stretford. In the BMC Gold Standard Races Charlene Thomas showed she still has some speed in her legs with a 2m 03.12s 800m, her fastest at the distance for 7 years, and only 1.25 seconds off her club record. Ben Read ran a big PB in the 1500m, breaking 4 minutes for the first time with 3m 59.92s. Meeting Results
In the Grand Prix races Lucy Robinson ran a fine new PB of 2m 11.14s in the 800m.

19th Jul 2017. Harriers Win Both Team Prizes at Nostell Priory 10k.



Wakefield Harriers were once again to the fore at the popular Nostell Priory 10k off-road race, with an excellent turnout of 25 runners, and team victories by both the men and women. Adam Peers had a clear victory in 33:49, and Ben Butler followed him home in 35:25. Also under 40 minutes were Stewart Knowles (5th 36:49), Chris Ward (11th 38:13), Chris Hunter (13th 38:29), Stephen Tilford (14th 38:32) & Craig Davidson (18th 39:33). Alex Potter was our first lady home, finishing 52nd and 4th lady overall in 42:59, and with Hayley Newbound 7th lady in 44:27 and Joanne Biltcliffe 8th in 44:42 the ladies also took the team prize. The race was also the 11th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, where Richard West still leads over Ben Butler, with Rosie Boughton first lady.

19th Jul 2017. Fifth Round of West Yorkshire T&F League at Cleckheaton.
There were some good performances at the fifth round of West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Cleckheaton, with Grade 3 or better performances from Amy Hunt (3rd U13G HJ 1.35m & 2nd U13G 150m 21.12s), Emily Plimmer (1st U15G 1500m 5m 00.90s) & Lucy Holmes (1st SW SP 11.36m) Milly Goodison had a clear victory in the U11 Girl's Long Jump with 3.51m, and Andrew Cartwright's 1500m PB of 4m 15.44s at the age of 41 puts him 7th in this year's UK M40 rankings for the distance.
With just one meeting left, Wakefield Harriers have a good overall lead in the team rankings, and individually George Lowrie is leading the U15 Boy's competition, Aran Thomas leads the U17 Men's, just one point ahead of Matthew Hill, and Mark Bostock is just one point off the lead in the U20 Men's competition. For the girls, Milly Goodison is now ahead in the U11 competition & Amy Hunt leads the U13 competition.

9th Jul 2017. Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 3.
The team was very short in many of the events in the 3rd match of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Wigan, but the athletes who competed for the club all performed valiantly, with many taking part in several events to secure as many points as possible. There were 'A' string victories from Scott Atkinson (200m 22.2s), Kieran Thackray (HT 44.10m), Alfie West (TJ 12.68m), Emily Tinsley (PV 2.70m) and the Men's 4 x 100m Relay team of Scott Atkinson, Nathaniel Davies, Men Mitchell & Alfie West in 44.9s. There were also Grade 3 performances from U20 India Elliott (800m 2m 16.9s), U20 Emily Tinsley (HJ 1.60m) & Lucy Holmes (SP 10.81m).

7th/8th Jul 2017. Harriers Success at English Schools T&F Championships.
Seven members of the club were performing individually for the West Yorkshire Schools team at the English Schools Championships at Birmingham. They all competed with distinction, with three of them making the finals of their events.
Leonie Ashmeade finished 5th in the IG 100m in 12.15s, after winning her heat in 11.99s & running 12.10s in her semi-final. Her heat time is a New Club U17 Women's 100m Record of 11.99s, just beating the previous record of 12.0s that had been held since 1982 by Diane Glazebrook. Rachel Crorken also finished 5th, in the SG 400m in 57.09s, after running 56.71s in the heats. Aran Thomas came 7th in the IB Discus with a throw of 42.23m, not far off his recent club record. Thomas Wood ran a new PB of 23.34s in the IB 200m heats, which is also not far off the club record in that event. Mark Bostock ran 4m 08.09s in the heats of the SB 1500m, Tamara Miller ran 13.14s in the heats of the JG 100m, and Abbey Brooke ran 4m 47.92s in the heats of the IG 1500m. 7th Jul 2017. Adam Peers Wins East Leeds 10k Trail Race.
Wakefield Harriers were dominant at the front of the East Leeds 10k trail race at Swillington. Adam Peers won in 33:09, with Ben Butler 4th & Stewart Knowles 5th. Katie Mchale was 41st and 2nd lady home. Race Results.

4th Jul 2017. Ben Butler and Hayley Newbound Star in Methley 5K Canal Race.
As last year, Ben Butler and Hayley Newbound were the club's star performers in the Jane Tomlinson Methley 5K Canal Race. Ben finished 2nd overall in a new PB of 16:28, with Chris Ward 9th in 17:55, Benjamin Khan 16th in 18:32 and the improving Andrew Nicholson also under 20 mins in 19:52. The fast improving Hayley finished 2nd lady in a new PB of 19:59. Race Results.

3rd Jul 2017. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Rachel Crorken.



For breaking the U20 Women's 400m Club Record with a time of 56.10 seconds, the Club Committee have decided that Rachel Crorken is the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Rachel!

2nd Jul 2017. Northern Athletics Inter-Counties Championships.



Several members of Wakefield Harriers were selected to compete for the Yorkshire team in the Northern Athletics Inter-Counties Championships at Hull, and helped Yorkshire to victory. Leonie Ashmeade won the U17W 'A' 100m in 12.53s, Thomas Wood won the U15B 'B' 100m in 11.92s & came 6th in the 'A' 200m in 25.06s, Lydia Barker came 7th in the U15G 'B' 800m in 2m 27.14s, Matthew Hill won the U17M 'B' 3000m in 9m 17.22s, Gabrielle Dyson came 4th in the U17W PV with 2.50m, Aran Thomas came 2nd in the U17M JT with 47.42m & 3rd in the SP with 12.37m, and Olivia Roe and Tamara Miller helped the U15 Girls team win the 4 x 100m Relay. 1st/2nd Jul 2016. Charlene Thomas 6th at the British Athletics Championships.
Charlene Thomas was our only competitor this year at the British Athletics Championships at Birmingham, which incorporated the Trials for the World Championships in London. After an injury affected build-up she was not at her very best to be able to mount a challenge for victory, but she still had a fine run to finish 6th in the 1500m in 4m 11.25s. Meeting Results.

1st Jul 2017. Eccup 10 Mile Road Race.



We just had a handful of club members competing this year at the Eccup 10 Mile Road race. Paul Lycett was first Harrier home, and Rosie Boughton our first lady. It was also the 10th race in this year’s Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Richard West has now moved into the top position. Race Results.
