31st Dec 2012. Annabel Mason is First Lady in Auld Lang Syne Fell Race.

Several Harriers braved the wet and very muddy conditions to compete in the 19th Auld Lang Syne fell race on the Bronte Moors above Haworth. In a quality race won by Olympic Triathlon Bronze Medallist Jonathan Brownlee, 16 year old Annabel Mason produced another amazing performance to finish 11th overall, and easily win the ladies prize, more than a minute ahead of Britain's senior mountain running champion Victoria Wilkinson. She beat her father John by three minutes, and was nearly a minute ahead of Wakefield's first male runner Matthew O'Connor, who had a good run to finish 15th and 2nd in the Junior men's category.

30th Dec 2012. Club All-Time Road Running Rankings for the Men.
Guy Goodair, a club stalwart who was a former international class race walker as well as being a good road runner, has been up in his loft researching past Wakefield Harriers performances from his old Athletics Weekly collection! He's managed to find performances from the club's golden era of the lates 1960s and early 1970s, when the club had an outstanding group of distance runners. During that period we had a Youths team that won the National Cross Country Championships, two international marathon runners under 2 hrs 18 minutes, and many other runners winning major races in fast times. However there were no 10 km road races in those days, so it is just the 10 mile and marathon rankings that they dominate. Many thanks to Guy for all his efforts, and with his help we've been able to produce a much fuller list of men's road performances. Download club all-time list.

26th Dec 2012. UK Track & Field Junior Age Group Rankings for 2012.

18th Dec 2012. The Club's Allocation of London Marathon Places.
The club's 3 London Marathon places have now been allocated. With several runners having their places already, we only had 3 applicants this year for the club places, so each was given one of the places. So congratulations to Paul Robinson, Sarah Bostwick & Elaine Sutcliffe, and we wish them the best in London in April.

18th Dec 2012. Adrian Howden Wins 2012 Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race.
There was an excellent turnout of 43 runners for the Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race, with several younger members taking part for the first time, and testing themselves against senior opposition over the 4.5 mile course.

This year's clear winner was Wakefield's own 'blade runner' Adrian Howden, picured here receiving his trophy from the club's former Olympic 400m runner Alan Slack. Adrian ran nearly two minutes quicker than he's done before, and embarrassed several of our senior athletes with his performance. For those who don't know Adrian, he was an outstanding runner before his accident several years ago, and keeps himself very fit competing now at a very high level in duathlons and triathlons, and still does the occasional road race.
Behind Adrian there was a real burn-up on the track, with Glen Shelley just outsprinting U17 Faye Beckett for 2nd, and Paul Robinson and Selim Khan taking 4th & 5th places. All of these runners have made big improvements in recent weeks, and were rewarded with fine runs. Chris Price ran well to record the fastest actual time with 24 mins 05 secs, ahead of Chris Ward & U17 William Ingram, and Helen Singleton was the fastest lady this year in 26 mins 08 secs, ahead of Katie McHale & U17 Faye Beckett.
The handicappers did a good job again, with two thirds of the runners racing it out on the track at the end of the 4.5 mile course. Hugh Allen took the award this year for being closest to his expected time, being just one second away, and three quarters of the field were within a minute of their expected times, which led to some close racing on the track at the end.

The final meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Thornes Park incorporated the Club Cross Country Championships. There were some great races between club members, and it was wonderful to see our two senior internationals Charlene Thomas & Julie Briscoe taking part, and taking the first 2 places in the ladies race. Here's Sally Smith fighting to stop Charlene taking her trophy from her!

Many thanks to all the marshals and helpers who made the event possible, and to Simon Lewis & Tracy Mitchell for taking the pictures and doing the presentations. Results and photos of all the medallists.

9th Dec 2012. Annabel Mason Finishes 5th at European Cross Country Championships.
Annabel Mason was selected to compete for Great Britain's U20 team at the European Cross Country Championships, at Budapest in Hungary. She has amazed us many times already, but she produced maybe her best performance yet as she finished 5th overall, racing in the snow in sub-zero conditions. She was 2nd British runner home, and was just 18 seconds behind winner Amela Terzic from Serbia. Britain's Emelia Gorecka was 2nd, Annabel 5th, Jennifer Walsh 8th and Jessica Judd 13th, as the British team retained their European U20 team title. So Annabel played a major part in the GB U20 team, and as the youngest runner there it was another marvellous achievement, so our congratulations to her once again. She finished 5th overall and she was less than 20 seconds behind established international U20 stars Emelia Gorecka and Jessica Judd. It was another superb performance from Annabel, which has earned her selection for the GB U20 team, so our congratulations to her once again. Results of all races

The Senior Men had a good turnout of 17 runners, and finished an excellent 3rd team. They were led home by first year U20 runner Matthew O'Connor, who had an excellent senior debut to finish 16th. The other scorers in the 'A' team were John Mason 27th, Chris Price 28th, Andrew Cartwright 44th, Chris Ward 50th & Stephen Tilford 61st. U20 Jack Mitchell also had a fine senior team debut in 71st, as he led home the 'B' team. Disappointingly the Ladies didn't complete a team, but Helen Beck in 22nd & Katie McHale in 27th both had fine runs.
Annabel Mason was a runaway winner of the U17 Ladies race, more than a minute and a half clear of the rest of the field, and with Rebecca Firth 4th & Faye Beckett 5th the team were clear winners too. The U15 Boy's team of Ben Read 8th, George Heppinstall 16th & Harry Mallinson 17th were 3rd, and in the U15 Girl's race Lucy Robinson 9th, Saskia Lewis 35th & Sophie Morgan 38th were 6th. Holly Kitching 8th, India Elliott 12th & Rebecca Sheppard 17th were 4th in the U13 Girl's race, and in the U13 Boy's event Max Rose 13th, Matthew Hill 19th & Liam Grosse 30th were also 4th team. We didn't have a complete team in the U17 Mens' race, but Daniel Franks had a good run to finish 14th. Results of all Races

13th/14th Oct 2012. Distance Runners Roundup of Leading Results from the Weekend.
Illness and injury meant we couldn’t field a full ladies team at the English National Road Relay Championships, which were held this year at Clumber Park, near Worksop. However Helen Singleton tested herself against some of England’s finest runners on leg 1, and had an excellent run to finish 9th on that leg, 17th fastest overall, and she was the quickest runner there from Yorkshire.
Stephen Tilford ran a fine new PB of 35 mins 33 secs when finishing 7th at the Wistow 10k, and Glen Shelley also recorded a new PB with 38 mins 54 secs. Our former 400m International Elaine Sutcliffe also competed, running 51:27.
Sharon Sykes ran 3 hrs 56 mins 41 secs at the Liverpool Marathon, to become the 13th female Wakefield Harriers to break the 4 hour barrier.

7th Oct 2012. Distance Runners Roundup of Leading Results from the Weekend.
Our oldest competing runner Brian Fozard had his first road race since turning 75, and set a New Club M75 10k Record of 52 mins 45 secs at the Sutton on the Forest 10k.
At race 9 of the Yorkshire Vets League at West Vale, Pete McNamara had a good run finishing in 6th place and 2nd M50, and he was followed by Paul Robinson in 24th and Mark Whitehouse in 30th. With just one race to go Peter is leading the M50 category, and has a good chance of winning the overall title. Race Results.
At the Chester Marathon James Morris improved his PB to 3 hrs 23:20, finishing 320nd overall out of over 2000 finishers, and at the Cusworth 10k near Doncaster Nicky Steel was 6th lady and 3rd in the F35 category in 41:35.

6th Oct 2012. Two Team Medals at Northern Cross Country Relay Championships.
At the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relay Championships at Sheffield the club put on a good showing in most age groups, and came away with two sets of winners medals. The event also incorporated the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Relay Championships, and after a close race with Hallamshire & Holmfirth Julie Greenwood, Sarah Bostwick & Julie Briscoe came home winners, with Julie Briscoe recording fastest time of the day. They finished 9th overall in the combined race with the open age group runners, and the club's open team of Helen Beck, Nicky Steel & Katie McHale were 15th overall, and 12th in the open category. The senior men's team of Chris Price, Nathan Elliott, Chris Ward & Andy Cartwright all ran well to finish an excellent 14th, and the 'B' team of Steve Eastwood, Alistair Robinson, Neil Dutton & Steve Faulkner also ran solidly to finish 22nd.
In the younger age groups the best result was from the U17 Ladies team of Faye Beckett, Rachel Firth & Rebecca Firth, who all ran well to win the bronze medals. Daniel Franks, Cameron Dye & William Ingram were 14th in the U17 Men's race, and Edward Dunbavin, George Heppinstall & Ben Read 10th in their U15 Boy's event, whilst Chloe Fitton, Sophie Morgan & Lucy Robinson were 13th in the U15 Girl's race. For the U13 Boys Matthew Hill, Liam Grosse & Max Rose were 8th, and for the U13 Girls Holly Kitching, Rebecca Sheppard & India Elliott also finished 8th. Results from Sportsoft
