There were some excellent road running performances from Wakefield Harriers today.

Michael's listed U13 Boy's 1500m Club Record of 4m 42.8s has stood since 1986, but it's thought he had run even quicker than that. He was one of the top runners in the UK in his age group for a while, and certainly could have achieved more, if he'd trained hard! Originally from Botswana, he lived in Wakefield during his teenage years, before returning to Botswana when he was 21. Unfortunately he didn't continue with his athletics, and had been in ill health for many years, before passing away at the weekend.

2nd Jul 2022. John Matthews & Mike Swain Memorial Jumps & Throws Meeting.
We had an excellent turnout from athletes from all over the North of England for the John Matthews & Mike Swain Memorial Jumps & Throws Open Meeting. And we also welcomed back some former and retired club members, keen to show their respects to the two leading coaches we sadly lost during this past year.
The standard of competition was high in many of the events, with lots of grade 1 & 2 performances achieved. Two of those grade 1s came from Wakefield's U13B Joshua Akintolu, who won the High Jump with 1.55m, and the Long Jump with 4.96m. His older brother Daniel also jumped a grade 2 5.70m in the U15B Long Jump, and threw a grade 3 11.00m in the Shot.
The Junior Jets were out in force, and many of them had the opportunity to try the High Jump for the first time, where Lily Keeler jumped a New U11G High Jump Record of 1.16m, improving the previous record held by Molly Dunbavin by 1 cm. Lily was also a clear winner of the Long Jump with 3.47m, and the Shot with 7.52m, and we also had Oliver Smith winning the U11B Shot.
Many thanks to all the officials and helpers for all their hard work in making the meeting a success.
