2021 Club News October - December

23rd Dec 2021. Daz Hewitt Wins 2021 Distance Runners League Championship.
The Christmas Handicap Race was the 16th and final round of the 2021 Club Distance Runners League Championship. This year's winner was Daz Hewitt, who has made huge advances this year, and has also been attcking the M50 records on the roads. The former champion Ben Butler finished in 2nd place, with Simon Midwood in 3rd. First lady was Angela Dales who finished 5th overall, one place ahead of Helen Beck. Download League Scores in XL.
Congratulations to the winners, and a big thanks to Tony Smith for his hard work organising the league so well once again, during what has been a difficult year.

21st Dec 2021. Francis Mwaba Wins Senior Christmas Handicap Race.
Many of the club's runners had their last race of the year in the Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race, over the traditional 4.5 mile course, twice round the perimeter of the park and with a lap round the running track at the end.
This year's winner of the John Newsome Memorial Handicap Trophy was Francis Mwaba, pictured below receiving the trophy from Wendy Newsome. Francis has made huge advances this year, and ran nearly 2 mins quicker than his estimated time, so is a worthy winner. Other big advances were made by Ian Shipley in 2nd, Daz Hewitt in 3rd and Abbey Brooke not far behind in 4th.

There was a high standard of runners competing this year, and we had good running conditions which helped produce some very fast times. Mark Bostock ran a new course record with 22:04, beating the previous best set by James Saxton 5 years ago. Abbey Brooke was the fastest lady with 27:00, which moves her up to 4th place in the ladies all-time list.
The handicapping worked out reasonably well, with more than half of the runners finishing within a minute of their expected times. Simon Midwood took the award this year for being closest to their expected time, running 6 seconds from the time predicted.

12th Dec 2021. Senior Men Win West Yorkshire Cross Country League Title.

At the end of the 2021 West Yorkshire Cross Country League season Wakefield Harriers did well to come away with four sets of team medals.
The Senior Men's team won the title, by the narrowest of margins. After two 1st places and two 3rd places they finished level on team points with Ilkley, who had finished 2nd in all four races. But Wakefield won the title on countback, having fewer individual points over the four races.
The U13 Girl's team also finished level on team points with City of York, but this time they lost out on countback, and so receive silver medals.
Both of our U11 teams won bronze medals, so congratulations to all the Junior Jets who took part.
In the individual standings we had two outright winners, with Ben Butler winning the M40 category & Chris Hunter the M45 category. Libby Cree finished 3rd in the U13 Girls age group, and Angela Dales also won bronze in the F45 category.

30th Nov 2021. Club Record Holder & Senior International Roger Bell Passes Away.

The club is very saddened to hear the news from his daughters Emily & Charlotte that Roger Bell has passed away, at the age of just 66. He had been ill for several years with with pulmonary fibrosis.
Roger had his most successful athletics year in 1979, when he finished 2nd in the UK Championships over 400m Hurdles, and gained a senior international vest. It was also the year in which he set the club 400m Hurdles record of 51.22 secs, and 110m Hurdles record of 14.9 secs. In the 42 years since, no Harrier has got close to those times, especially in the 400m Hurdles.
Roger was also a regular and much valued member of the very successful Senior Men's track & field team that won the Northern League title, alongside younger brother Alan.
Our sincere condolences to Roger's family.
