2021 Club News April - June

29th Jun 2021. Amy-Eloise Markovc Selected for Team GB in Tokyo Olympic Games.


After her 2nd place finish at the British Olympic Trials, our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc has been selected to compete for Team GB in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympic Games next month. Report from GB Athletics.
She becomes the 6th athlete from the club to become an Olympian, the others being Steve Hollings (1972 3000m S/C), Alan Bell (1980 400m), Alan Slack (1984 4 x 400m Relay), Martyn Bernard (2008 HJ) & Emily Freeman (2008 200m & 4 x 100m Relay). 27th Jun 2021. Yorkshire & District League Premier Division Match 1.
At the first match of the Yorkshire & District League Premier Division at Cleckheaton, Libby Cree continued her record breaking form with another New Club U13 Girls 800m Record of 2 mins 20.8 secs, beating her previous record set a few weeks ago. We are still waiting for a team score for this meeting. Results from Power of 10.

27th Jun 2021. Eccup 10 Mile Road Race.
We had a good turnout of 14 club members competing this year at the Eccup 10 Mile Road race. Ben Butler was first Harrier home in 4th place in 55:45, and Helen Beck our first lady, and 4th lady overall in 65:33. Both were winners in their respective over 40 age group categories. It was also the 10th race in this year’s Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Simon Midwood has now moved into the top position, followed by Helen Beck. Race Results.

25th - 27th Jun 2021. Muller British Championships Incorporating Olympic Trials.
At the Muller British Championships at Sportcity, Manchester, which incorporated the British Olympic Trials, there were three Wakefield Harriers competing, and they all performed superbly.
Amy-Eloise Markovc finished 2nd in the 5000m in 15m 10.54s, losing out narrowly at the finish to Jessica Judd. But as she already had the UKA Olympic Qualifying Standard of 15m 10.00s, it should be enough to clinch selection for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Lucy Robinson had probably the best result of her career so far, finishing 6th in the final of the 1500m in 4m 15.83s, after finishing 3rd in her heat. Leonie Ashmeade finished 5th in the semi-final of the 100m in a season's best of 11.79s. Results from Power of 10.

19th/20th Jun 2021. England Athletics Under 23 & Under 20 Championships.
At the England Athletics Under 23 & Under 20 Championships at Bedford there were just two Wakefield Harriers competing. Leonie Ashmeade was just outside the medals, finishing 4th in the U23W 100m in 12.08s, and 8th in the U23W 200m in a season's best of 25.23s. Tamara Miller was 5th in her heat of the U20W 200m in 26.70s. Results from Power of 10.

19th Jun 2021. North of England Track & Field League Match 2.
With a depleted team the club did well to finish 4th in the second match in the "East Premier" division of the North of England Track & Field League at York. Download Results in PDF.
Match Result :- City of York AC 326, Rotherham Harriers & AC 302, City of Sheffield & Dearne AC 290, Wakefield District Harriers & AC 242, Leeds City AC 219, Holmfirth Harriers & AC 147.

16th Jun 2021. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 4.

13th Jun 2021. Bradford Millennium Way Relay.
The club did well to turn out 3 teams of 10 to compete in the Bradford Millennium Way Relay, a challenging long distance off-road relay of 47 miles, involving 6300 ft of climbing.
The Men's team finished an excellent 2nd team, recording their 2nd fastest ever time for the event, which was a good performance in the warm and humid conditions. Chris Hunter & Daniel Franks ran a new 'club record' on leg 5, and Ben Butler & Adam Peers were close to the club best on leg 1, as were Chris Ward & Bobby Brailsford on leg 3, and Simon Midwood & Chris Snowball on leg 4, who were fastest of all the teams on that leg.
The Mixed team also did well to finish 26th overall and 5th in category, and the third team were 43rd out of the 65 competing teams.

12th/13th Jun 2021. Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships.
At the Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships at Leigh Wakefield athletes came away with six medals this year.
Gold medals were won by Leonie Ashmeade (SW 100m 11.82s), Lucy Robinson (SW 800m 2m 06.54s), Mark Bostock (SM 800m 1m 56.52s) & Alfie Edwards (U20M LJ 6.51m).
Bronze medals were won by Rachel Crorken (SW 400m 57.35s) & Mark Bostock (3rd SM 1500m 3m 57.74s). Results from Power of 10.

5th Jun 2021. Amy-Eloise Markovc Finishes 5th in Olympic 10,000m Trial.
Amy-Eloise Markovc ran well at the Müller British Athletics 10,000m Championships & European 10,000m Cup race at Birmingham, which also incorporated the British Olympic 10000m Trials. She finished 5th in 32 mins 04.38 secs, but was the 4th British finisher, so unfortunately she misses out on selection at this event. However she still has the Olympic qualifying time for 5000m, and the trials for that event will be held on 26-27 June at Sportcity, Manchester. Results from Power of 10.

31st May 2021. Another New Club U13 Girls 1200m Record for Libby Cree.
Libby Cree claimed her fourth club record of the season so far, as she ran a New Club U13 Girls 1200m Record of 3 mins 51.60 secs at the Trafford Medal Meeting at Stretford, beat her previous record set a few weeks ago. Libby is currently 4th in the UK U13 Girls rankings at both 800m and 1200m! Meeting Results Link.

29th/30th May 2021. Track & Field Weekend Highlights.
At the BMC Grand Prix at Sportcity, Manchester there were some excellent 1500m performances. Mark Bostock came close to the 3 min 50 secs barrier with a new PB of 3:50.76, which is in the top 10 all-time from the club. Lucy Robinson also recorded one of the fastest ever times run by a Harrier with her superb new PB of 4:17.52 Meeting Results.
We also had several athletes competing at the Doncaster AC Spring Open Meeting Meeting Results.

29th May 2021. New 5000m Club Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Amy-Eloise Markovc had an excellent run at the Platinum PT Qualifier meeting in Boston MA, USA, finishing 2nd in the 5000m. Her time was a New Club 5000m Record of 15 mins 05.96 secs, beat her previous record set two years ago by over 5 seconds. It was also an Olympic Qualifying Time, and places her 3rd in the UK rankings for 2021, and 15th in the UK all-time list. UK Womens 5000m rankings.

26th May 2021. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 3.

23rd May 2021. England Selections for Leonie Ashmeade and Tamara Miller.

Congratulations to Leonie Ashmeade and Tamara Miller, who were selected to compete for England teams at the Loughborough International Meeting. Leonie was chosen as part of the squad for the England 4 x 100m relay team, and Tamara for the England U20 4 x 100m relay team. In the end neither got a run out in the relays, but Leonie clocked a 12.07 in the 100 guest race. Abbey Brooke continues to improve whilst studying at Loughborough, with a fine 3000m in 10m 10.39s. 22nd May 2021. North of England Track & Field League Match 1.
At the first match in the "East Premier" division of the North of England Track & Field League at Rotherham, the club did very well to finish 3rd in a very close match, just 10 points behind the winners. Download Results in PDF.

20th May 2021. Another Club U13 Girls 800m Record for Libby Cree.
Libby Cree continued her record breaking form with another New Club U13 Girls 800m Record of 2 mins 22.14 secs, beating her previous record set a few weeks ago. She set this at the BMC Regional Races at Leeds, where there were several other fine performances from Wakefield runners. Libby is currently 4th in the UK U13 Girls 800m rankings. Meeting Results.

19th May 2021. Leonie Ashmeade Selected to Compete for England.
Congratulations to Leonie Ashmeade, who has been selected to compete for England at the Loughborough International on Sunday. She has been chosen as part of the squad for the 4 x 100m relay team. Report from England Athletics.
Leonie had obviously impressed the selectors with her 11.93 secs she ran for 100m at Nuneaton a few days earlier.

15th May 2021. Pontefract AC v Wakefield District H & AC Meeting.
Athletics finally returned to Thornes Park Stadium, where there was a good turnout of young Harriers for the Pontefract AC v Wakefield District H & AC Meeting. Meeting Results.

14th May 2021. New Club 10000m Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Our USA based athlete Amy-Eloise Markovc made her debut over 10000m at the World Continental Tour Meeting at Irvine in California, and had a great result. She finished 5th in a high quality international field, beating fellow GB internationals Jessica Judd and Steph Twell. Her time of 31 mins 25.91 secs was a New Club 10000m Record, beating Aine Hoban's previous record of 32 mins 45.94 secs, which was also set in the USA back in 2007.
Amy's time places her 8th in the UK 10000m all-time list, but was tantalisingly just less than a second short of the Olympic qualifying time. Results Link.

12th May 2021. North of England Track & Field League Dates.
The North of England Track & Field League has been restructured for 2021, and this season Wakefield Harriers are competing in the "East Premier" division, along with City of Sheffield & Dearne AC, City of York AC, Holmfirth Harriers & AC, Leeds City AC and Rotherham Harriers & AC.
The meeting dates are Saturday 22nd May at Rotherham, Saturday 19th June at York, Sunday 4th July at Cleckheaton, and Sunday 1st August at Sheffield.
Any senior, U20 or U17 athletes wishing to compete for the club please contact your team managers Joseph Flitcroft (men) or Lucy Holmes (ladies) ASAP.

8th/9th May 2021. Track & Field Weekend Highlights.
We had athletes competing at the BMC Grand Prix at Stretford ( Meeting Results Link), the Trafford Senior Open Meeting at Stretford ( Meeting Results Link), and the Kingston upon Hull May Open Meeting ( Meeting Results Link).

5th May 2021. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 2.
After all of last year, and the first meeting of this year had to be cancelled, it was great to see athletes back in action at the West Yorkshire Track & Field League.

24th/25th Apr 2021. Road Running Weekend Highlights.
At Elvington Chris Rippon broke Dave Brailsford's M55 10K record by 20 second, with his time of 39:27.
At Dalton-on-Tees Danny Franks ran a new 10k PB of 32:22, which moves him up to 18th place in the club all-time list.

24th/25th Apr 2021. Track & Field Weekend Highlights.
At the Trafford Open Meeting at Stretford the hightlight was a superb new 800m PB of 2:05.53 from Lucy Robinson, which is the 3rd best time ever by a Wakefield Harrier, only bettered by Charlene Thomas and Alice Butler. Meeting Results Link.
At the Loughborough April Track Open Meeting sprinters Leonie Ashmeade and Tamara Miller got their seasons off to a good start, and Abbey Brooke opened her season with a new 3000m PB. Meeting Results Link.

24th Apr 2021. Fast Times from Amy-Eloise Markovc in USA.
The club's European Indoor 3000m Champion Amy-Eloise Markovc has been continuing her fine form in the USA. In Charlottesville Virginia she recorded 4:09.52 for 1500m, just 0.2 secs outside her PB, and a week later she ran 15:17.13 for 5000m at Eugene at the USATF Grand Prix Meeting in Oregon. The race won by Britain's Eilish McColgan, and Amy's time was her 2nd best ever time over the distance.

17th Apr 2021. New Club U13 Girls 1200m Record for Libby Cree.
Libby Cree continued in her record breaking form, as she ran an excellent New Club U13 Girls 1200m Record of 3 mins 53.1 secs at the Trafford Junior Open Meeting at Stretford. This beats the old record set by Olivia Radcliffe in 2007 by nearly six seconds.
It's obviously very early in the season, and not many athletes have had chance to compete yet, but Libby is currently top of the UK U13 Girls rankings at both 800m and 1200m! Meeting Results Link.

12th Apr 2021. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Libby Cree.



For breaking the U13 Girls Club 800m Record, Libby Cree has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Libby!

5th Apr 2021. Superb 5 Km Road Performance from Lucy Robinson.
Lucy Robinson made a welcome and long awaited return to competition after injury, with a superb 5 Km road performance. She came 5th in a top class field in the women's race in the 'Fast 5K' series of races at Ashton-in-Makerfield, in the superb time of 16 mins 21 secs, just 12 seconds away from the club road 5 Km record. 3rd Apr 2021. New Club U13 Girls 800m Record for Libby Cree.
Libby Cree showed that lockdown hasn't slowed her down at all, as she ran a superb New Club U13 Girls 800m Record of 2 mins 22.84 secs in her first competition of the year, at the Trafford Open Meeting at Stretford. This beats one of the longest standing club records on the books, and the quality of her performance is apparent when seeing that the previous record was set by Melanie Abson when winning the Yorkshire Championships with a CBP of 2m 25.6s in 1978.
