2018 Club News July - September

30th Sep 2018. Matthew Hill Wins Littleborough 10K.
1st year U20 runner Matthew Hill had a tremendous run to win his second 10k race of the year. He was an easy winner of the Littleborough 10K in the excellent time of 33 mins 04 seconds, to go top of this year's club rankings. This time moves him up to 28th on the club all time list, and 4th fastest U20 runner. Race Results.

30th Sep 2018. Daniel Franks Wins Pontefract Half Marathon.
Daniel Franks had a great run to win the Pontefract Half Marathon, winning by over 2 minutes in the fine time of 74 mins 51 secs. Also having good runs in PB times were Ryan Williams in 84:03, Liam O'Flaherty 84:06 & Andrew Nicholson 88:36. Hayley Newbound was our first lady home in 1 hr 41:26, and Richard West won the M60 prize. Race Results.
The race was also the 13th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Paul Lycett still leads, ahead of Hayley Newbound, leading the ladies.

29th Sep 2018. Another Club Record for Courtney Newsome.
Several Wakefield Harriers young athletes were competing at the Denis Lumbard Memorial Open Meeting at Grimsby. The best performance was from Courtney Newsome, who ran a New U11 Girls 150m Record of 21.9 secs, to add to her 600m record. Courtney also won her 80m in 11.7 secs, and also performing well with a Grade 2 performance was Alfie Edwards with 5.64m in the U15B LJ. Meeting Results.

26th Sep 2018. Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting.
The Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting is on Monday 15th October at 7 pm at Thornes Park Stadium. This is your chance to have your say about the running of the club, and to choose the Committee members for the next 12 months.
The club really does need some new people to come forward, to help with the organisation of the club, and the events it puts on. All nominations for Committee positions should be handed in at the cabin before the meeting.
The AGM is open to all Club Members.

23rd Sep 2018. Northern Athletics Autumn Road Relay Championships.
The club had a good day at the Northern Athletics Autumn Road Relay Championships, at Sports City Manchester.
The Senior teams both did pretty well, with the Women's team of Hayley Newbound, India Elliott, Julie Briscoe & Jennifer Walsh finishing 19th out of 108 teams in their 4-stage relay. Julie was 18th fastest overall, and Jennifer 29th. The Men's 'A' team of Dale Worton, Mark Bostock, Matthew O'Connor, Ben Butler, Matthew Hill & Daniel Franks were 26th in their 6-stage relay, and the 'B' team of Benjamin Khan, Andy Nicholson, Tony Smith, Paul Lycett, David Brooke & Thomas Coney finished 100th out of the 140 competing teams. U20 runners Matthew Hill & Mark Bostock performed very well, and were our two fastest runners.

We also had a great turnout of young athletes competing, and they all did well in their 3-stage relay races. The best result was from Abbey Brooke, Lucie Hall & Emma Preston, who finished 7th in the U17 Women's race, with Abbey being 6th fastest overall. The U17 Men's team of Bailey Mann, Callum Gaunt & Zach Frankish were 21st. In the U15 Girl's race the 'A' team of Emily Plimmer, Suzanne Brooke & Sophie Hall were 18th, and the 'B' team of Harriet Metcalfe, Holly Walker & Ellie Owens 39th, with Emily being 16th fastest overall. For the U15 Boys Samuel Langley, Tristan Wright & Alexander Bostwick finished 30th. For the U13 Boys the 'A' team of Ben Hall, Matthew Wardell & Ben Shackleton were a good 10th, and Euan Gaskin, Daniel George & Zachary Rayner also did well to come 18th for the 'B' team. Ben Shackleton was 17th fastest overall. In the U13 Girl's race Paige Watson was our only runner, but she had a great run to finish 6th on leg 1.

16th Sep 2018. Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting.
There was a good turnout of young athletes for the Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting, held at Thornes Park Stadium, and excellent performances were achieved by some of the Harriers.
Outstanding amongst these were Grade 1 performances from Lucy Holmes (1st SW SP 12.20m), Aran Thomas (1st U17M DT 48.01m, SP 13.69m & JT 52.41m ) & Alfie Edwards (1st U15B LJ 6.21m).
Grade 2 performances were also achieved by Kian Shaw (2nd U17M HJ 1.85m), Amy Hunt (1st U15G 200m 26.43s, 1st LJ 5.03m & 1st PV 3.00m) & Eleanor Rayner (2nd U15G 200m 26.45s) and Grade 3 performances by Lynsie Whyke (1st SW TJ 10.76m), Eleanor Rayner (1st U15G 100m 13.07s), Paige Watson (1st U13G 800m 2m 32.69s), Emily Plimmer (2nd U15G 800m 2m 24.00s), Erin Hunt (2nd U15G PV 2.50m), U20 Samuel Mitchell (1st SM 200m 22.51s), U17 Terrell Williams (2nd SM 200m 23.40s), Fraser Stewart-McCarrison (3rd U15B 200m 24.50s), Louis Hargreaves (4th U15B 200m 24.68s), Ben Smith (1st U13B 200m 27.84s) & Euan Gaskin (1st U13B HJ 1.40m).
We also had a good turnout of Junior Jets, with some of them enjoying their first proper competition. Top performers amongst the U11 athletes were Jessica Watson & Libby Cree, who had a close race in the 600m, recording fast times of 1m 55.03s & 1m 55.11s respectively. Oliver Gorbutt won the U11 Boy's race in 2m 01.67s. We also had some Junior Jets competing in the Pole Vault, with Tilly Simms jumping 1.50m and Oliver Bostwick 1.40m, which we'll list as club records in this new event for them.

9th Sep 2018. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Championships.
The West Yorkshire Track & Field League came to it's conclusion with the Championships at Cleckheaton, and there were some good performances recorded by Wakefield athletes. There were Grade 3 or better performances from Lucy Holmes (1st SW SP 11.79m), Eleanor Rayner (U15G 100m 13.01s), Ellie Fedzin (1st U15G HJ 1.50m), Amy Hunt (1st U15G LJ 4.71m) & Paige Watson (2nd U13G 800m 2m 32.27s). And from the Junior Jets there were victories from Courtney Newsome (75m 10.98s), Libby Cree (LJ 4.02m) & James Sharp (SP 6.39m).

9th Sep 2018. Some Good Half Marathon from Club Members.
Julie Briscoe was invited to compete in the Elite Women's Race at the Great North Run, from Newcastle to South Shields, and finished 18th in the excellent time of 78 minutes 59 seconds.
There were also some good Half Marathon times achieved at the Vale of York Half Marathon, from Sherburn in Elmet. Benjamin Khan made an excellent debut at the distance, finishing 36th in a fine time of 79:44, and M40 Ian Richardson wasn't too far behind in 80:45. Race Results Link.

8th Sep 2018. Leonie Ashmeade Competes in Great North City Games.
Leonie Ashmeade was selected to compete in the Great North City Games on Gateshead Quay. She recorded 18.58s and then 18.64s in her two U20 150m races.

3rd Sep 2018. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Alfie Edwards.



After winning two medals, and breaking two U15 club records at the Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships, Alfie Edwards has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Alfie!

2nd Sep 2018. YADAL Interleague Challenge Match at Middlesborough.
There were several athletes from the club representing the YADAL at the Interleague challenge match at Middlesborough. Download Results.

2nd Sep 2018. Quality Times at Trafford 10K.
There were a couple of quality times recorded at the Trafford 10K at Partington. Matthew O'Connor went to the top of this year's club men's rankings with his time of 33:17, as he finished 47th in a top quality field. Charlene Thomas finished 88th overall and 5th lady in 34:54. Race Results Link.

2nd Sep 2018. Wakefield Men Finish 3rd in Leeds Country Way Relay.
The club once again had 2 teams of 12 runners participating in the 64 mile Leeds Country Way Relay, a long distance off-road event where the runners run in pairs, over 6 stages of between 9.7 and 11.8 miles. Both teams did well, with the Men's 'A' team finishing 3rd overall, the best result from the club for many years. James Saxton & Daniel Franks took the prize for the fastest pairing on leg 6, and Ben Khan & Chris Hunter were 2nd fastest on leg 2.
The 'Mixed' team also did well to finish 20th team overall out of the 58 competing teams. Hayley Newbound & Paul Lycett were the fastest mixed pair on leg 5, and on leg 6 Joanne Biltcliffe & Craig Orr took the prize for fastest mixed pair.

31st Aug/1st Sep 2018. Aran Thomas Competes in 2018 School Games.
Aran Thomas was selected to compete for the England North Schools team in the 2018 School Games at Loughborough, and finished 2nd in the Discus with another fine throw of 49.43m. Meeting Results.

25th/26th Aug 2018. Two Medals at England Athletics U15 & U17 Championships.
The club won two medals at the England Athletics U15 & U17 Championships at Bedford. Aran Thomas same away with a silver medal in the U17 Men's Discus with a throw of 46.39m, and Amy Hunt won a bronze with a leap of 3.05m in the U15 Girl's Pole Vault, with sister Erin finishing 10th with 2.51m. Olivia Roe ran 13.24s in the heats of the U15G 100m & 27.87s in the heats of the 200m, and Fraser Stewart-McCarrison ran 25.83s in the heats of the U15B 200m. Meeting Results

19th Aug 2018. Two New Club Records at Spenborough Open Meeting.
At Spenborough AC's Ivan Stringer Memorial Medal Meeting at Cleckheaton, Amy Hunt continued her upward trajectory, jumping a New U15 Girl's Pole Vault Club Record of 3.23m, beating the previous record held by Abigail Roberts since 2011. Aran Thomas was also in record breaking form, with a New U17 Men's Discus Club Record of 50.77m, beating the record for the 4th time this year.
There were also two more Grade 1 performances from Aran Thomas (U17M SP 13.40m & JT 51.36m), and one from Alfie Edwards (U15B LJ 6.09m), a Grade 2 performance from new member Ellie Fedzin with 1.55m in the U15G HJ, and Grade 3 performances from Erin Hunt (U15G PV 2.63m) & Ben Smith (U13B SP 8.24m). 11th/12th Aug 2018. 2 Titles & 3 Club Records at Northern U13/U15/U17 Champs.
At the Northern Athletics U13/U15/U17 Track & Field Championships at Liverpool Alfie Edwards (pictured below) had an outstanding weekend, winning two medals and breaking two club records. The conditions were windy, which ruined the chances of fast times for the sprinters, but enabled Alfie on the first day to jump a New Wind Assisted U15 Club Long Jump Record of 6.50m, winning the title. On day two he returned to win a silver medal in the Pole Vault with a New U15 Pole Vault Club Record of 3.75m, breaking Danny Cunnane's long standing record from 1997.



There was further success in the Pole Vault as Amy Hunt won the U15 Girl's title, equalling the U15 Girl's Pole Vault Club Record of 3.10m. Sister Erin made it a great family double by taking silver with a clearance of 2.50m.
Medals were also won by Abbey Brooke, taking silver in the U17W 1500m in 4m 51.22s, and by U13 Ben Smith, who won a bronze medal in the Shot with a throw of 8.15m.
Ben also finished 6th in the U13B 100m, and other finallists were Tamara Miller 7th in the U17W 100m and Olivia Roe 7th in the U15G 200m & 8th in the 100m.

6th Aug 2018. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Aran Thomas.



After finishing 2nd in the Discus at the English Schools T&F Championships, and being selected to compete for the England Schools team at the SIAB International, Aran Thomas has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Aran!

5th Aug 2018. West Yorkshire T&F League 6th Round at Cleckheaton.
It was extremely warm for the 6th round and final round of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Cleckheaton, and there was only one Grade 3 performance, from Eleanor Rayner in the U15G 200m with 27.18s.
Wakefield Harriers are once again overall winners of West Yorkshire Track & Field League, though Halifax Harriers weren't far behind this year. Individually Ben Smith has won the U13 Boy's age group, and Eleanor Rayner and Amy Hunt came through strongly to gain a 1-2 in the U15 Girl's age group. Poppy Thorpe was 2nd U20 Lady, and Courtney Newsome finished 2nd in the U11 Girl's age group. In the U17 Men's age group Harvey Thorpe and George Lowrie finished 2nd and 3rd, and Mark Bostock was 3rd U20 Man. The League trophies will be presented at the WYL Championships at Cleckheaton on Sunday 9th September.

5th Aug 2018. Julie Briscoe Wins Asda Foundation York 10K.
Julie Briscoe recorded her fastest 10k of the year in winning the Ladies prize in the Asda Foundation York 10K. She recorded 35 mins 55 secs finishing 28th overall, nearly two minutes clear of the next lady. Results Link.

4th Aug 2018. Wakefield Harriers Win Northern League Title Again.


After winning three out of their four matches, The Wakefield Harriers Senior Track & Field Team easily won the Northern League this year, and so become Northern League Champions for the 5th time in 6 years!
Well done to all the athletes, coaches, officials and in particular to Team Manager Richard Gayle for a fantastic result.
Final League Positions :- Wakefield Harriers 22 (1599), Wigan 15 (1477 pts), West Cheshire 14 (1435.5), City of York 14 (1358), Preston Harriers 13 (1380.5), City of Sheffield 6 (724.5).

4th Aug 2018. Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 4.
In a very close 4th and final match of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Preston, Wakefield Harriers just won by a handful of points, and thus became league champions again. Several athletes competed in numerous events to help secure those vital points, with Team Manager Richard Gayle setting a wonderful example by doing 5 events, so he deserves great credit for the team's success.
There were 'A' string victories from U20 Miles Sizer (400mH 60.2s), Chris Harris (TJ 13.07m & LJ 6.30m), U17 Kian Shaw (HJ 1.85m), U20 Rachel Crorken (400m 56.6s), U17 Abbey Brooke (1500m 4m 52.4s), U20 Abby Ward (HJ 1.75m), and from the Women's 4x400m Relay team of Abbey Brooke, Racheal Larkin, Rachel Crorken & Amanda Shaw in 4m 00.9s.
There was also a Grade 1 performance from U20 Leonie Ashmeade (100m 12.2s), and Grade 3 performances from Scott Atkinson (400m 50.4s), Daniel Franks (800m 1m 56.0s), U17 Aran Thomas (JT 49.85m), Luke Thackray (JT 48.23m), Amanda Shaw (100m 12.6s & 200m 25.4s) & U20 Leonie Ashmeade (200m 25.9s).
Match Result :- Wakefield 396, Preston 393.5, Wigan 385.5, West Cheshire 354, York 336, Sheffield 23.

1st Aug 2018. Dewsbury ‘Flat Cap 5’ Off-Road Race.
There were 10 Wakefield Harriers taking part in the popular ‘Flat Cap 5’ off-road race, from Dewsbury. For the 2nd year running Benjamin Khan was first Harrier home, this time finishing an excellent 3rd, and he was followed by Craig Heppenstall in 25th, and Shaun Mollart in 29th. Helen Beck was our first lady home, finishing 3rd lady in 43rd place overall, out of 286 finishers.

The race was also the 12th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Paul Lycett now leads, ahead of Craig Davidson, with Hayley Newbound leading the ladies.

28th/29th Jul 2018. England Athletics Senior AAA Championships
Three Wakefield Harriers were competing this year at the CAU Inter-County Championships at Sportcity Manchester, which incorporated the England Athletics Senior AAA Championships. Leonie Ashmeade had an excellent run to finish 5th in the 100m in a PB of 11.75s, although it was wind assisted. Amanda Shaw ran 12.36s in the heats of the 100m, and sister Racheal Larkin 60.79 in the heats of the 400m, as they helped Yorkshire to finish 2nd. Meeting Results.

22nd Jul 2018. Yorkshire & District League Match 4, Cudworth.
The team finished 3rd at the 4th and final match of the Yorkshire & District League at Cudworth, and so finished 2nd overall in the league. League website link.

22nd Jul 2018. Matthew Hill Wins Brighouse Running Festival 10K .
17 year-old Matthew Hill showed what a great running talent he is by winning the Brighouse Running Festival 10K outright, in an excellent new PB of 34 mins 14 secs. Results Link.

21st Jul 2018. England Schools Vest for Aran Thomas.



As a result of his 2nd place finish in the Discus at the English Schools T&F Championships, Aran Thomas was selected to compete for the England Schools team at the SIAB International in Grangemouth, Scotland. He had another good Discus competition, coming second with a grade 1 throw of 47.99m.
Congratulations to Aran on his first international selection.

18th Jul 2018. Wakefield Harriers Men Dominate Nostell Priory 10k.



The Wakefield Harriers Men were dominant at the popular Nostell Priory 10k off-road race, with the individual winner and a clear team victory. After his 2nd place finish last year Ben Butler went one better this year with an impressive and decisive victory in 34:19. Benjamin Khan also impressed with his 3rd place in 36:33, and with Craig Davidson also making a big advance from last year with 4th place in 37:16, the team were victorious. Rebecca Zserdicky finished 3rd in the Ladies race in 43:27. Race Results.
The race was also the 11th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, where Craig Davidson now leads over Paul Lycett , with Hayley Newbound the leading lady.

15th Jul 2018. Abby Ward 10th in World Junior Championships Final.
Abby Ward was selected to compete for Great Britain in the High Jump at the World Junior Championships in Tampere Finland, and did very well indeed. She equalled her season's best of 1.84m in the qualifying round, to reach the final, and matched that height in coming 10th in the final two days later. Well done Abby! Results Link.

13th/14th Jul 2018. Harriers Success at English Schools T&F Championships.
It was a very successful English Schools Championships at Birmingham for members of Wakefield Harriers, with two silver medals won, and two club records achieved. Aran Thomas managed both, as he came 2nd in the Intermediate Boys Discus with a New Club U17 Men's Record of 50.63m, beating his own record set earlier in the season. Also coming away with a silver medal was Amy Hunt, finishing 2nd in the Junior Girls Pole Vault with a PB clearance of 3.05m. The other club record came from Rachel Crorken, who equalled the U20 Ladies 400m record of 56.10s in the semi-final of the Senior Girls 400m, after running 56.47s in the heats.



In total we had 13 members of the club selected to compete individually for the West Yorkshire Schools team, and Olivia Roe was also selected to compete for Humberside. Amy and Olivia even had the distinction of carrying the flags for their counties!
For the Senior Boys Sam Mitchell ran 23.23s in the heats of the 200m & Mark Bostock ran 4m 01.00s in the 1500m heats. In the Intermediate Boys age group Jack Cherry finished 12th in the Long Jump with 6.11m, Thomas Wood ran 22.45s in the heats of the 200m & Terell Williams ran 11.66s in heats of the 100m. Alfie Edwards was also selected for the Junior Boys Pole Vault bud unfortunately didn't clear his opening height.
Leonie Ashmeade came 6th in the final of the Senior Girls 100m in 12.14s, after winning her heat in 12.17s, whilst for the Intermediate Girls Tamara Miller ran 12.75s in heats of the 100m & Abbey Brooke ran 4m 43.05s in the 1500m heats. Eleanor Rayner ran 12.96s in heats of the Junior Girls 100m.

8th Jul 2018. Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 Match 3.
There was another great all round effort from the team at the 3rd match of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at York, where the team were victorious once again. Wakefield Harriers now have a 4 point lead at the top of the division, and with just 1 match to go look set to regain the title.
They were helped by double 'A' string victories from Chris Harris (LJ 6.38m & TJ 13.44m), Amanda Shaw (100m 12.5s & 200m 25.5s) and Jennifer Walsh (800m 2m 14.3s & 1500m 4m 50.5s). There were also individual 'A' string victories from Daniel Franks (800m 1m 55.6s), U20 Matthew Hill (5000m 17m 27.0s), U17 Kian Shaw (HJ 1.80m), Lucy Holmes (SP 12.33m), Rebecca Tolson (HJ 1.55m) & Vikki Mills (PV 2.10m).
There were also dominant wins for the Women's 4x100m Relay team of Lucy Holmes, Charlotte Sampson, Racheal Larkin & Amanda Shaw in 50.7s. and from the Women's 4x400m Relay team of Jennifer Walsh, Racheal Larkin, Rachel Crorken & Amanda Shaw in 4m 00.9s.
In addition there were also Grade 3 performances from U20 Rachel Crorken (1st 'B' 200m 25.7s) & Rachel Larkin (2nd 400m 59.5s).
Match Result :- Wakefield 428, York 386, West Cheshire 355, Wigan 334, Preston 327.5, Sheffield 158.

7th Jul 2018. Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter Counties Championships.



Several Wakefield Harriers were selected to compete for Yorkshire at the Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter Counties Championships at Leigh, and helped Yorkshire to a team victory. For the U17 Men Aran Thomas won the Discus with 48.66m & came 2nd in the Shot with a PB of 14.06m, and James Simms cleared 2.60m in the Pole Vault. In the U17 Ladies age group Abbey Brooke ran 4m 52.21s for 1500m and Amy Hunt cleared 2.80m in the Pole Vault. For the U15 Girls Olivia Roe recorded 13.00s for 100m and Eleanor Rayner 26.54s for 200m, whilst for the U15 Boys Alfie Edwards won the Long Jump with a PB of 5.87m & recorded 13.85s for the 80m Hurdles. 4th Jul 2018. West Yorkshire T&F League 5th Round at Wakefield.
Wakefield Harriers young athletes were in record breaking form at the 5th round of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Wakefield. Ben Smith had 2 clear victories in the U13 age group in the 150m in 20.11s & the Shot with 8.16m, his time in the 150m being a New West Yorkshire T&F League Record. Courtney Newsome was close to the WYL record as she won a quality U11 Girls 600m race, in another New U11 Girls Club 600m Record of 1 min 49.21 secs, her 3rd record this year. From the Harriers there was also a Grade 2 performance from Lucy Holmes (1st SW Shot 11.91m), a Grade 3 performance from Eleanor Rayner (1st U15G 100m 13.03s), and a good win from Cole McAndrew in the U11 Shot with 6.38m.
After 5 rounds and with just 1 round to go, Wakefield Harriers are now back in the lead in the league standings. Individually Ben Smith leads the U13 Boy's age group & Courtney Newsome the U11 Girl's age group.

3rd Jul 2018. Harriers to the Fore in Jane Tomlinson Canal Run 5K.
It was an impressive 1-2 for the Harriers at the Jane Tomlinson Appeal Canal Run 5K at Methley, as Ben Bulter and Mark Bostock were the first two home in excellent times of 15:57 & 16:06 respectively. And with the fast improving Benjamin Khan a good 7th in 17:38 the club easily won the team prize. Wakefield ladies also won the team race, with Helen Beck 4th lady and 42nd overall in 20:41, U15 Lydia Barker 5th lady in 20:56 & Hayley Newbound 6th lady in 21:25. Race Results.
It was also the 9th race in this year’s Club Distance Runners League Championship, and Craig Davisdon is in pole position, ahead of Hayley Newbound.

2nd Jul 2018. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Abby Ward.


For being selected to compete for Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in Tampere Finland from 10-15 July. Abby Ward has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Abby!

30th Jun/1st Jul 2018. British Athletics Championships at Birmingham.
Three of the club's leading athletes were competing at the British Athletics Championships at Birmingham, which incorporated the Trials for the European Championships in Berlin. Abby Ward continued her fine form with an excellent 4th in the High Jump, even though she is still only a junior, with a clearance of 1.79m. Amy-Eloise Neale couldn't quite reproduce her form from earlier in the year, and finished 9th in the 5000m in 16m 19.55s, and Lucy Robinson finished 14th in her heat of the 1500m in 4m 32.04s. 1st Jul 2018. Norton 9 Mile Road Race - Distance League.
We just had a handful of club members competing this year at the Norton 9 Mile Road race, which had been re-arranged to one of the hottest days of the year, after being postponed by snow and ice! Craig Davidson was first Harrier home in a fine 6th place, and Paul Lycett & Richard West put in strong veteran performances, finishing 3rd in M55 category and 2nd in the M60 category respectively.
