Race Results.

19th Mar 2017. Round Up of Leading Road Running Performances.
Sunday was a busy day for road races, so it's a shame the windy conditions made it difficult to record fast times, but there were still some fine performances.
At the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10k Jennifer Walsh was a clear winner of the ladies prize in 36:28, and Dale Worton had his first race over the distance, finishing 5th in 34:24. Race Results.
At the Thirsk 10 Mile road race Ben Butler continued his fine form, finishing in 16th place with a time of 57:02. Joanne Biltcliffe also recorded a big new PB with 70:19, finishing 17th lady and 181st overall out of 1000 runners. Race Results.
A few Harriers were using the East Hull Harriers 20 Mile Road Race as part of their London Marathon preparations, and had very encouraging runs. First home was M45 Daz Hewitt in 2 hrs 23:56, and Louise Taylor wasn't far behind, finishing 4th lady in 2 hrs 27:02. Race Results.

11th/12th Mar 2017. New Club U17 Heptathlon Record for Aran Thomas.
Two of Wakefield's talented all-round athletes competed at the England Athletics U15/U17 Combined Events Championships at Sheffield. In his first season as an U17 Aran Thomas gained PBs in six of his seven events, and won the Northern Counties title, coming 12th overall in the national event. His points total of 4002 was a New Club U17 Heptathlon Record. Aran's results were 60m 7.73s, LJ 5.80m, SP 12.81m, HJ 1.67m, 60mH 9.97s, PV 3.61m & 1000m 3:08.41. For U15 Olivia Roe this was her first multi-events competition, but unfortunately an injury in the High Jump meant she couldn't complete all five events of the Pentathlon. She did however record PBs in the Shot with 8.37m and Long Jump with 4.48m. Results from Power of 10

11th Mar 2017. Julie Briscoe Wins 34 Mile Haworth Hobble Trail Race.

Julie Briscoe continued her excellent form with victory in the 34 mile Haworth Hobble Trail Race, finishing 20th overall in 4 hours 31 minutes, and beating the 2nd lady by 7 minutes. The race incorporated the GB trials for IAU World Trail Running Championships, to be held at Badia-Prataglia in Italy on 10th June, and Julie's victory should ensure her selection for the British team for this event.

11th Mar 2017. Inter County Cross Country Championships.
Two Wakefield Harriers represented Yorkshire at the Inter County Cross Country Championships at Loughborough, and they both did well, to help Yorkshire win the overall team trophy. Yorkshire U15 Champion Abbey Brooke was the county's leading runner in an excellent 9th place in the U15 Girls event, and younger sister Suzanne Brooke finished in 64th place in the U13 Girls event. Yorkshire senior champion Julie Briscoe was unable to compete, as it clashed with the GB trials for IAU World Trail Running Championships, which was her main focus for the winter.

Conditions were excellent for this year's runnning of the Dewsbury 10k Road Race, and although a lot of Harriers ran personal best times, it turns out that this year's race was about 200m over distance. The ladies race was won by Olympic marathoner Alyson Dixon, but Julie Briscoe wasn't too far behind in an excellent 35:09, so probably would have broken her own club F40 record had the race distance been correct. Other Wakefield ladies to break 45 minutes were Louise Taylor, recording an encouraging 41:49 in her first 10k, Joanne Biltcliffe (42:22) & Rebecca Zserdicky (44:59).
For the men Ben Butler was first home in a superb 12th place in a new PB of 33:44, followed by Stephen Tilford (35:11), with Glenn Shelley (39:00), M50 Selim Khan (39:25) & M45 Marwan Khoueiry (39:34) also finishing inside 40 minutes.

7th Jan 2017. Two Winners at Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.

Our two Yorkshire Cross Country Champions, Julie Briscoe & Abbey Brooke.
Pictures from Woodentops.org.uk

There were excellent running conditions for this year's Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley, near Ripon, and two Wakefield Harriers took advantage to claim Yorkshire titles. Julie Briscoe looked supreme as she easily won the Senior Ladies race, leading from the beginning and never seriously challenged. In a long and distinguished running career this was her first ever Yorkshire Cross Country title, and at the age of 40 this was a magnificent performance. Equally outstanding was Abbey Brooke, who after biding her time in the early stages, ran out a clear winner of the U15 Girl's race.
In the team stakes there were no team medals this year, but still some solid team performances. Backing up Julie in the Ladies race, Sarah Bostwick & Alex Potter had a good scrap with Sarah coming out on top in the end to finish 53rd, and with Alex 54th & Joanne Biltcliffe 73rd the team finished 8th. Rosie Boughton also did well in her first race from the club to finish 104th. The Senior Men's team of Ben Butler 45th, Chris Ward 76th, Andy Cartwright 78th, Stephen Tilford 91st, Glen Shelley 120th & Ian Shipley 204th also did well to finish 12th club. And not far behind the sixth team scorer were Daz Hewitt 214th, Martin Holding 230th, Richard West 248th, Jeremy Frain 258th & Michael Page 267th. In the U20 races Hayley Newbound also did well to finish 11th.
In the younger age groups our best result was in the U15 Girl's race, where with Abbey Brooke 1st, Yasmin Moorehead 23rd & Emma Preston 31st the team were just out of the medals in 4th. For the U15 Boys Bailey Mann 33rd, Joshua Dawson 54th & Callum Gaunt 55th finished 11th club. In the U17 Girl's race, India Elliott 15th, Holly Kitching 18th & Poppy Thorpe 25th finished 4th team, whilst for the U17 Men Mark Bostock and Matthew Hill finished 21st & 22nd respectively. In the U13 age group Suzanne Brooke had an excellent run to finished 6th, and with Lavinia Gavaghan 28th & Ashton Brodie 56th the girls were 6th club to finish. Marcey Bellwood wasn't too far behind in 62nd, and for the boys Euan Gaskin was 67th & Alexander Bostwick 76th.
