Wakefield Harriers

2012 Club News January - March

31st Mar 2012. Wakefield's Ladies Team Finish 2nd at Northern 6-Stage Road Relays.

The club had a near full strength Ladies team out for the Northern 6-Stage Road Relay Championships, held at Sefton Park in Liverpool, to try and defend the title they won in such style last year. But with Julie Briscoe still struggling from the hamstring injury that has troubled her all winter, and Sarah Beevers also hampered with a calf injury, the girls couldn't quite repeat their triumph. However the team of Katie McHale, Sarah Beevers, Jenny Latham, Julie Briscoe, Helen Singleton and Charlene Thomas all ran superbly to finish 2nd, and were only 36 seconds behind winners Rotherham Harriers. Our 2009 UK 1500m Champion and Olympic hopeful Charlene Thomas was 2nd fastest overall, with her storming last leg run that brought us from 5th into the medals, and Helen Singleton made up a lot of ground on leg 5, running the 5th fastest time of the day.
The Men's team of Nathan Elliott, Jack Hallas, Pete McNamara, Paul Hallas, Stephen Tilford, Tony White, Hugh Allen, Martin Holding, Mark Whitehouse, Neil Dutton, Chris Ward & Alistair Robinson also did very well to come 34th in the high class 12-Stage field. Jack Hallas was the team's fastest runner on the short stage, and 14th fastest overall, and Nathan Elliott was our fastest long stage runner. Reagan Wright also ran well on the first leg for the Ladies 'B' team.

The club had just a few runners taking part this year at the English National Cross Country Championships, which were held on the famous hilly course at Parliament Hill Fields in North London. However it was one of the club's most successful days in the event, with the U15 Girl's team coming away with bronze medals in the team event, and Annabel Mason having a truly exceptional run to finish 2nd in the race. Annabel finally got the measure of Bronwen Owen, who won the Yorkshire & Northern titles ahead of her, but was narrowly defeated by Southern Champion Bobby Clay, losing the title by just 3 seconds. The other members of the team, Rebecca Firth (25th), Faye Beckett (81st) & Sophie Woollin (116th) all ran superbly as well to finish 3rd, which is probably the best team result from the club in these championships since the Youths team led by Richard Hollings won gold in 1968.

Wakefield Harriers were once again invited by the city's twin town of Castres in France to take part in their long distance relay race, the 30th edition of 'La Ronde Givree'. The name of the race means 'The Frosted Tour', and it certainly lived up to it's name this year, with the event run in sub-zero temperatures, and the final leg competitors running in the snow. We didn't have so many runners competing this year, but the 'mixed team' of Jenny Latham, Matthew Dodsworth, Anna Gaches & Chris Ward all ran exceptionally well to easily win their category, and come 24th overall out of over 300 teams competing. It was particularly pleasing to have new member and outstanding triathlete Jenny Latham competing for the first time in Wakefield colours, and she ran superbly on leg 1 to give the team a flying start. The vets were not at full strength this year, and finished 67th team. Results from Race website

13th Jan 2012. Former Men's Team Manager & Coach Doctor Colin Bell Passes Away.
The club was saddened to hear that Doctor Colin Bell passed away before Christmas. Dr Bell was a great rugby player before he went into general practice, but he was best known to the Harriers as the father and coach to two of the club's greatest ever athletes, Alan & Roger Bell. Alan Bell still holds the club records at 200m, 300m & 400m, and his greatest triumph was reaching the semi-finals of the 400m at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Roger Bell also reached international level at 400m Hurdles, and still holds the club records at the event, and also the 110m Hurdles. As well as coaching his sons and some other club athletes, Dr Bell was also the men's athletics team manager during the period of greatest success for the men, when they won the Northern League title in 1977. The club sends its condolences to the Bell family.

7th Jan 2012. Wakefield Harriers Host the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
The club successfully hosted the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Thornes Park, on a very windy day ! The course had to be changed at the last minute because of storm damage, and the trecherously slippery conditions in the 'Bandstand Hill' area, but the new course proved popular with the runners, and especially with the spectators.

The highlight of the day was the race between the Brownlee brothers in the senior mens' race. The two Triathlon stars and Olympic hopefuls showed that they are truly classy runners in their own right, and dominated the race finishing over a minute clear of the rest of the field, with older brother Alistair winning by just 4 seconds. Wakefield's mens' team of John Mason 53rd, Nathan Elliot 67th, Stephen Tilford 97th, Pete McNamara 115th, Paul Robinson 147th & Steve Faulkner 156th finished 12th team in a top quality field, and in the womens' race Sally Smith had an excellent run to finish 22nd overall and 4th U20 runner. She thus secured selection for the Yorkshire team at the Inter-Counties, along with Annabel Mason, Rebecca Firth, William Ingram & Edward Dunbavin.
In the younger age groups our best results were as expected in the U15 Girls' race, where our girls easily won the team race, and Annabel Mason & Rebecca Firth came home with individual silver and bronze medals. Annabel had a great race against the National U15 Cross Country Champion Bronwen Owen from Scarborough, and was with her most of the way before losing touch in the last kilometre. Rebecca had an excellent run as well in 3rd, and with Faye Beckett having a fine run in 11th the girls were clear winners. The 'B' team of Stephanie Rodgers 16th, Sophie Woollin 19th & Rachel Firth all ran well too, to finish 4th team. The U17 Mens' team of Matthew O'Connor 14th, Steven Eastwood 19th & Daniel Franks 22nd also won team medals, finishing 2nd, and the U15 Boys were 4th, with William Ingram having an outstanding run to finish 4th. He was supported by Sam Convery in 18th & Robert Sanderson in 30th. Edward Dunbavin was also just out of the medals in 4th place after an excellent run in the U13 Boys' race, and the U13 Girls' team of Beth Oates 10th, Olivier Theaker 32nd & Laura Sanderson 34th did well to finish 5th team.
Results from Power of 10.
