30th Jun 2011. Results of Second Reindeer Romp Off-Road Race.
There was another good turnout of 113 runners for the second of the Reindeer Romp Series of off-road races from Overton. First Harrier home was Chris Ward once again in 3rd place, and U15 Annabell Mason embarassed the men by finishing 9th overall and easily the first lady, two places ahead of Pete McNamara. 28th Jun 2011. Jack Hallas Returning to Some Good Form at BMC Grand Prix.
At the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford Jack Hallas ran a season's best for the 800m. He missed the first part of the track season due to an appendix operation, but is now returning to form, running 1 min 52.63 secs in the BMC Gold Standard Races. Results from Power of 10.

28th Jun 2011. Dave Brailsford First M55 at Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix Series Race 4.
Several of our veterans took part in the fourth of the Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix series, at Meanwood. They were led home by Pete McNamara in 13th, who was 2nd in the M50 category, and not far behind was Dave Brailsford in 20th place, winning the M55 category.

25th/26th Jun 2011. Good Performances from Multi-Eventers in Heptathlon at Doncaster.
Bethany Porter and Dannielle Anderson competed at Doncaster in the North East Schools Combined Events Championships, and did very well in the Intermediate Girls Competition. Bethany achieved PBs on the first day of 12.0s in the 80m Hurdles, 1.50m in the High Jump and 26.4s in the 200m, and with solid performances in the Shot, Javelin, Long Jump and 800m improved her lifetime best for the Heptathlon to 4099 points. She finished 2nd overall, and achieved her target of going through to the ESAA Combined Finals in Exeter in September. Dannielle just missed out on reaching the finals, but did achieve an overall Heptathlon PB of 3405 points, finishing 7th overall. Results from Power of 10.

25th/26th Jun 2011. England U20 & U23 Championships & European Trials.
Several Harriers competed at the England U20 & U23 Championships at Bedford, which incorporated the trials for the forthcoming European U20 & U23 Championships. Lucy Holmes was 5th in the U20 Shot in a new PB of 12.17m, and the club U20 record must now be in her sights. Laura Robson ran 12.36s in the heats of the U20 100m, and Samantha Brook 65.52 secs in the heats of the U20 400m Hurdles. Results from Power of 10.

26th Jun 2011. Results of Wilkinson Pontefract Open Meeting.
Pontefract AC successfully hosted their open meeting at Thornes Park Stadium, at which there were some good performances from the younger Wakefield athletes in the hot sunshine. Abby Ward jumped a Grade 1 1.40m in winning the U13G HJ, and Grade 2 performances were recorded by Sarah Drake (1st SW Hammer 45.94m), Abigail Roberts (1st U15G HJ 1.50m) & William Rotherforth (1st U17M TJ 12.67m). 26th Jun 2011. Annabel Mason Close to Winning FRA Junior Championship.
Annabel Mason took part in race four in the Fell Running Association Junior Championship series in the U16 category, the Arnison Dash Fell Race from Patterdale, the course being 2 miles with a 1000 feet of climbing (category AS). She was first girl in the U16 and U18 race, taking both course records. Less than an hour later, she found she was allowed to run the course again in the Senior race, and again came in first lady, and also took the senior lady's course record ! Out of the three FRA championship races she has competed in, she has had three wins, and only needs one more good result to take the championship.

25th Jun 2011. Three Medals Won at British Masters Track & Field Championships.
A few Harriers competed at the British Masters Track & Field Championships at Birmingham, and came away with three medals. Linda Risdale won silver in the M60 Hammer, and Bryan Shearsmith won two bronze medals in the M70 100m & 200m. Results from Power of 10.

19th Jun 2011. Charlene Thomas Wins for Great Britain in European Team Championships.

Charlene Thomas was selected to run the 1500m for the Aviva Great Britain and NI team at the Spar European Team Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, and had the best result of her career so far, and possibly the greatest ever performance by a Wakefield Harriers distance runner ! Despite being boxed in, and having to run round and between other runners on several occasions, she produced a storming finish to win the race against some of Europe's best in 4 mins 06.85 secs. She was one of only three winners for the GB team, and her maximum 12 points helped Great Britain to finish 4th overall, behind Russia, Germany and the Ukraine. Our congratulations to Charlene for such a wonderful and inspiring performance.

19th Jun 2011. Two Club Records for Relay Teams at Young Athletes League.
At the fourth and final fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League at Spinkhill, we once again had some superb performances, and the club had a good team victory over their South Yorkshire rivals. The highlights were a New Club U17 Mens 4 x 400m Record of 3 mins 35.2 secs, by Matthew O'Connor, James Saxton, Steven Eastwood & Oliver Edmunds, and an Equalled Club U17 Ladies 4 x 300m Record of 2 mins 52.6 secs, by Bethany Porter, Zoe Kerins, Grace Eyles & Bethany Sharp.
In addition Grade 1 performances were recorded by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 200m 25.3s), Abigail Roberts (1st U15G PV 3.00m) & Abby Ward (1st U13G HJ 1.40m), and Grade 2 performances were recorded by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 100m 12.5s), Bethany Porter (1st U17W 80mH 12.2s) & Andrew Jones (1st U15B PV 3.10m).

19th Jun 2011. Paul Lockwood Wins Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10k Road Race.
Paul Lockwood continued his fine form with an excellent win in the Jane Tomlinson 10k at Leeds, going one better than last year when he was 2nd. He was a clear leader for most of the way, and running 32 mins 41 secs solo was a fine performance indeed. Race Results.

18th/19th Jun 2011. 5 Medals and a Club Record at Northern Athletics T&F Championships.
At the Northern Athletics Senior & U20 T&F Championships at Sport City, Manchester, the club had several athletes competing, with 5 athletes returning home with medals. Will Mulroy won the U20M High Jump with 1.85m, Zara Hohn ran a season's best of 13.75s to finish 2nd in the Senior 100m Hurdles, Laura Robson ran a 100m PB of 12.17s to finish 2nd in the U20 100m and Lucy Holmes threw a new PB of 11.88m to finish 2nd in the U20 Shot. Samantha Brook won a bronze medal and ran a New Club U20 Women 400m Hurdles Record of 64.67 secs, beating Alison Hackney's time of 64.9 secs from 2005. Just outside the medals were Naida Bromley 4th in the Senior 400m Hurdles in 64.90s & Craig Westerman 5th in the U20M Discus with a PB of 41.57m. It was good to see Jack Hallas having his first race after injury, coming 7th in the 800m after running 1m 54.9s in the heats, & Alistair Robinson was 8th after a 1m 57.3s PB in his heat. Richard Gayle was 8th in the Men's Hammer with 41.02m & Sarah Drake 10th in the Women's Hammer with 42.73m.

15th Jun 2011. Fourth Round of Complete Runner WYT&F League at Wakefield.
The club hosted the 4th Complete Runner WYT&F League Meeting at Thornes Park Stadium, and Grace Eyles was once again the star of the show with a New U17 Ladies 200m League Record of 25.11s, improving the previous record that had stood since 1985. There were also several other winners from the club, including a grade 2 performance from Bethany Porter with 12.48s in the U17W 80m Hurdles.

14th Jun 2011. Some Good Performances at Trafford Grand Prix Meeting.
At the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford there were excellent performances from some of the club’s middle distance runners. There were several good PBs, and grade 1 performances from Sophie Woolin & Stephanie Rodger in the U15G 800m, with 2m 18.08s & 2m 18.72s respectively. Sophie & Stephanie are now both ranked in the UK top 20 in this event. M50 vet Paul Hallas ran 2m 10.29s in his 800m race to rank in the top 5 in the UK for 800m, as he has for the past 3 years. 12th Jun 2011. Twenty Harriers Run in Bradford Millenium Way Relay.
The club turned out 2 full teams of 10 to compete in the Bradford Millenium Way Relay, a challenging long distance off-road relay of 47 miles, involving 6300 ft of climbing. The 'vets' team put in their usual good show, coming 8th overall and 3rd in category, and the men's ‘open’ team finished 25th out of the 51 competing teams. Download results in Excel.
The drier than normal condition helped the runners to fast times, and we had 'club records' on leg 3 by Dave Dawson & Paul Robinson, and on leg 4 by Pete MacNamara & Neil Dutton. See the club's best times in this event.

12th Jun 2011. Annabel & John Mason Race on the Fells Again.
Annabel & John Mason were racing on the fells again, competing in the latest BOFRA race at Kettlewell. Annabel came 4th overall and first girl in the U17 race, and John came 16th overall in the seniors race. Race results

11th Jun 2011. Great Performances at West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships.
At the West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships at Cleckheaton, the club had many athletes competing with distinction for their school districts, with Grace Eyles perhaps being the star with her New Club U17 Women's 300m Record of 39.66 secs, her 3rd record this year in this event. She broke the WYS Championship record, as did Bethany Sharp with her win in the 300m Hurdles in an excellent PB of 45.18s, another grade 1 performance.
Other club members did exceptionally well too, with victories from Will Mulroy (SB HJ 1.90m), George Brown (IB 400mH 63.75s), Kieran Thackray (IB HT 41.53m), Jake Worton (IB 1500m SC 4m 46.3s), William Ingram (JB 1500m 4m 32.3s), Andrew Jones (JB PV 2.95m), Samantha Brook (SG 400mH 67.40s), Lucy Holmes (SG SP 11.26m), Danielle Anderson (IG TJ 10.16m), Beth Porter (IG 80mH 12.15s) & Hannah Yates (IG Discus 32.10m).
In addition there was a grade 1 performance from William Rotherforth (2nd IB TJ 13.03m), and grade 2 performances from Feyisayo Olaleru (2nd IG LJ 4.82m) & Craig Westerman (2nd SB DT 42.94m). Meeting Results from Power of 10.

11th Jun 2011. Charlene Thomas Selected for GB European Team Championships.
Charlene Thomas has been selected to run the 1500m for the Aviva Great Britain and NI team at the European Team Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, on the weekend of 18th/19th June. We send her our congratulations on her latest international selection. Details of GB team from UK Athletics.
Her excellent form was confirmed at the Nike BMC Grand Prix at Watford, when running solo in the second half of the race she won the 1500m in the excellent time of 4 mins 06.87 secs, which is inside the 'B' standard for this year's World Championships, and currently ranks her 3rd in the UK.

5th Jun 2011. Third Round of Young Athletes League Northern Premier East Division.
At the third fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League at Middlesborough, we once again had a good turnout of athletes and some good performances, but were beaten this time by a strong Gateshead team. The highlight was a New Club U17 Women's 300m Record of 39.7 secs from Grace Eyles, improving her own record, and the superb time currently places her 3rd in the UK U17 rankings for 2011.
In addition Grade 1 performances were recorded by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 100m 12.2s) & Abigail Roberts (1st U15G PV 3.00m), and Grade 2 performances were recorded by Bethany Porter (2nd U17W 80mH 12.4s), Holly Marshall (2nd U15G 200m 26.8s), Sophie Woollin (2nd U15G 800m 2m 22.2s), Abby Ward (1st U13G HJ 1.35m & 1st LJ 4.30m) & Benjamin Frankish (1st U15B LJ 5.59m).

5th Jun 2011. Chris Ward 3rd in Goole Riverbank Challenge Off-Road Race.
There were just three Harriers running in the Goole Riverbank Challenge off-road race, and Chris Ward had another excellent run to finish 3rd. Race Results.

4th Jun 2011. Women's Team Finish 7th in First UK Women's League Division 2 Match.
The club had a very depleted team for the first match of the UK Women's League Division 2 at Hendon, but the 8 athletes who turned out, along with the officials who also made the long journey, ensured that we keep our status as Yorkshire's leading T&F club. Naida Bromley, Alice Butler, Sarah Drake, Mikaela Harrison, Lucy Holmes, Jasmine Kerry, Lynsie Whyke & Reagan Wright did extremely well to cover the required minimum of 17 events, and finished a creditable 7th team. There were no individual victories, but Lucy came an excellent 2nd in the Shot with a new PB of 11.69m, and Naida recorded a fine new PB in the 400m Hurdles 62.75s, both senior grade 2 performances. Naida also threw the Javelin a grade 2 distance of 38.42m, and Sarah was also close to a grade 2 with her 3rd place throw of 44.23m in the Hammer.

4th Jun 2011. Second Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 2SE.
At the second round of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 2SE at Hull, the combined men's and women's team finished 2nd once again behind a strong Kingston U Hull team. For the men maximum points were gained by U20 High Jumpers Ben Holmes & Will Mulroy, with PBs of 1.96m & 1.90m respectively, and good points were gained in most of the field events, with a grade 2 performance recorded by U17 Will Rotherforth with 12.74m in the Triple Jump. On the track our star vets John Convery and Paul Hallas scored good points with excellent times in the 5000m, which rank them in the top 10 nationally in their age groups, and the 4 x 400m team of Jack Hallas, Tom Coney, Alistair Robinson & Gareth Hepworth were victorious.
The women's team was depleted because of the clash with the UKWL, but it was good to see Ruth Dales back competing on the track after a long spell of injury, easily winning the 100m Hurdles in 15.5s. U20 Samantha Brook also ran well to win the 400m Hurdles in 66.6s, and U17 Danielle Anderson recorded a grade 2 performance with an excellent new PB of 10.57m in the Triple Jump.

2nd Jun 2011. Results of First Reindeer Romp Off-Road Race.
There was a good turnout of 113 runners for the first of the popular Reindeer Romp Series of off-road races, from the Reindeer Inn at Overton. First Harrier home was Chris Ward in 3rd place, and Pete McNamara also ran well to finish 10th, just 2 places ahead of first lady Annabell Mason, who even though she is an U15 was well clear of the other ladies. 30th May 2011. Chris Ward Close to Best in BUPA London 10k.
A small contingent from Wakefield made the trip to London to compete in the BUPA London 10k road race, which attracted many of Britain's top distance runners, including Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe. Road Captain Chris Ward was close to his best, running 35 mins 03 secs through the famous streets of the capital. Race Results from Power of 10.

29th/30th May 2011. Three Harriers Compete for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties.
Three members of Wakefield Harriers were selected to compete for Yorkshire in the CAU Inter-Counties Track & Field Championships at Bedford, and helped Yorkshire win the overall team title. Zara Hohn is still not on the form this season that has won her the Inter-Counties title for the past 2 years, and came 5th in the 100m Hurdles in 14.50s , after running 13.97s in the heats. Sarah Bostwick gained valuable points by finishing an excellent 4th in the 3000m Steeplechase in 11 mins 56.45s, and 1st year U20 Laura Robson made her Yorkshire senior debut in the 100m, coming 6th in her heat in 12.38s.

29th May 2011. Second Match of Northern Premier Division of the National Junior League.
The U20 team made the long journey to Glasgow for the 2nd match in the Northern Premier Division of the National Junior League, and came away with an excellent 6th place against the big city combined teams. There were no 'A' string winners, and the windy conditions affected performances, but the club managed to fill nearly all events and score consistently.

28th May 2011. New Club U15 Girls 800m Record for Sophie Woollin.
At the Ingrams League meeting at York, Yorkshire Champion Sophie Woollin ran a New Club U15 Girls 800m Record of 2 mins 17.5 secs, beating the previous record of 2 mins 18.9 secs set by Sally Smith in 2008. This is an excellent time which currently ranks her 8th in the UK in her age group. Meeting Results.

27th May 2011. Julie Briscoe Selected to Run for England Again in Toronto Marathon.
As a result of her wonderful run in the Brighton Marathon in April, where she was close to her PB on a not very fast course, Julie Briscoe has been selected to run for an England team in the Toronto Marathon in the autumn, for the 2nd year running. Our congratulations to Julie on her latest international selection.

27th May 2011. Three Harriers Selected to Compete for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties.
Three members of Wakefield Harriers have been selected to compete for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Track & Field Championships at Bedford. Zara Hohn will run the 100m Hurdles, Sarah Bostwick the 3000m Steeplechase, and Laura Robson the 100m.

25th May 2011. Chris Ward Wins New 'Temple of Doom' Trail Race.
Tony Audsley organised a new race from Lepton, near Huddersfield, the 'Temple of Doom' Trail Race. It was well supported with 59 runners taking part, and Chris Ward was the winner from John Mason. Annabel Mason embarrassed most of the men by finishing 6th overall, to easily finish first lady. Race Results in XL.

25th May 2011. Third Round of Complete Runner WYT&F League at Cleckheaton.
We didn't have too many competitors at this meeting, and the best victories came from Grace Eyles (U17W 100m 12.58s & Long Jump 5.12m), Bethany Porter (U17W 80m Hurdles 12.84s) and Rebecca Firth (U15G 1500m 5m 03.63s).

22nd May 2011. Second Round of Young Athletes League Northern Premier East Division.
At the second fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League at Hull, we once again had a good turnout of athletes and some good performances, which gave the team a very close victory by just 5 points. The highlight was a New Club U17 & U15 Pole Vault Record of 3.10m from Abigail Roberts, this height currently placing her 2nd equal in the UK rankings for 2011. The windy conditions slowed the track runners, but as well as Abigail there were other grade 1 performances in the field from Hannah Yates, winning the U17W Discus with a throw of 32.98m, and from new recruit Abby Ward, who won the U13G High Jump with 1.40m. A grade 2 performance was achieved by Andrew Jones who won the U15B Pole Vault with 2.90m.

22nd May 2011. Charlene Thomas & Zara Hohn Compete at the Loughborough International.
Charlene Thomas & Zara Hohn were invited to compete at the Loughborough International Meeting, and recorded useful performances in the blustery conditions. Charlene won the 1500m match race in 4 min 20.21 secs, beating the England representative, and Zara competed in the 100m Hurdles invitation race, and ran a season's best of 13.86s, finishing 3rd. 22nd May 2011. Two Harriers Complete the Edinburgh Marathon.
Two Harriers battled against the high winds to complete the Edinburgh Marathon. Craig Orr did well in the conditions to run a PB of 3 hrs 28 mins, and Mark Whitehouse also completed the race in 4 hrs 04 mins. Race Results from Power of 10.

21st May 2011. Two Vets Teams Compete in National Masters Road Relays.


The club managed to get two full teams out this year for the National Masters Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park, near Birmingham, and in spite of the change in age groups the teams did well. The M45-54 team of 6 runners, where 4 runners in the team were over 54, finished a respectable 15th out of the 30 competing teams in their race, and the makeshift M35-44 team of 8 runners finished a creditable 24th out of the 30 competing teams in that category. 21st May 2011. Annabel & John Mason Race on the Fells Again.
Annabel & John Mason were racing on the fells again, running at the Sedbergh Gala for the opening round in the British Open Fell Runners Association Championship series. Annabel came fifth overall and first girl in the under 17 race, and John came 17th in the senior event.

John also took part on Wednesday in the Kinnoull Hill Race near Perth in Scotland, and came 5th. Race Results.

18th May 2011. Paul Lockwood Wins Askern 10k in new PB Time.
At the Askern 10k Road Race, which was the 5th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, Paul Lockwood had his first 10k of the year, and came home first in a new PB of 32 mins 19 secs, excellent running in the windy conditions. Chris Ward also recorded a fine PB of 34:37 in 8th place, but the team had to wait until 77th for our 3rd counter Tony White in 40:09, so missed out on the team prize. Claire Sykes had her first road race for some time to finish first female Harrier in a time of 44:03 and 156th place out of nearly 500 runners.

14th/15th May 2011. 13 Gold Medals at the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships.
The club as usual had a good showing at the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships at Cudworth, and came away with another good haul of medals, including 13 golds. We had two of our international stars competing this year, with Charlene Thomas completing an 800m/1500m double in 2m 06.83s & 4m 19.88s, and Zara Hohn running 14.69s in the heats of the 100m Hurdles, and finishing 2nd in the 100m in 12.68s. Laura Robson had an impressive U20 sprint double, winning the 100m in a windy 12.35s and the 200m in 25.64s, and the U15 girls 800m was a good event for the club, with Sophie Woollin & Stephanie Rodgers both recording PBs to take gold & silver in 2m 21.15s & 2m 21.94s respectively.
There were also Yorkshire gold medals for Sarah Bostwick (SW 2000m SC 7m 35.95s), Lynsie Whyke (SW Triple Jump 9.99m), Samantha Brook (U20W 400m Hurdles 68.72s), Bethany Sharp (U17W 300m Hurdles 45.52s), Hannah Yates (U17W Discus 28.56m), Kieran Thackray (U17M Hammer 43.04m), Jake Worton (U17M 3000m 9m 45.34s) & Andrew Jones (U15B Pole Vault 2.80m).
Silver medals were won by Mikaela Harrison (SW 400m Hurdles 67.21s), Lucy Holmes (U20W Shot 11.16m), Ben Holmes (U20M High Jump 1.85m), Chris Harris (U20M Long Jump 5.89m & Triple Jump 11.94m), Matthew O'Connor (U17M 1500m 4m 14.90s), Ethan Plumb (U17M Javelin 34.70m), Danielle Anderson (U17W Triple Jump 10.05m), Bethany Porter (U17W 80m Hurdles 12.25s) & Patrick Thackray (U15B Javelin 31.14m), and bronze medals were won by Bethany Sharp (U17W 300m 43.16s), Kieran Thackray (U17M Shot 9.41m & Discus 30.26m), Ethan Plumb (U17M Hammer 26.48m), Andrew Lorkins (U17M Javelin 34.00m), Sam Convery (U15B 1500m 4m 34.69s) & Patrick Thackray (U15B 80m Hurdles 13.24s).

9th May 2011. New Members joining Wakefield Harriers in May.

8th May 2011. Calderdale Way Relay 2010, Rearranged from December.
The club originally had 2 teams of 12 entered in the Calderdale Way Relay, but due to the heavy snowfall the event was postponed from the original date in December. The race eventually took place on May 8th, but many of the original team members were injured or unavailable, so it was a makeshift team from the club that finished 42nd out of the 85 teams that competed, well down from the original entry. Highlight from the team was a new 'club record' on leg 1 from Chris Ward & John Mason, who finished 9th. Race Results

8th May 2011. First Round of Young Athletes League Northern Premier East Division.
To complete a busy week for the club, we successfully hosted the opening fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League at Thornes Park Stadium. The team had a good all round performance, and had a convincing victory over local rivals Leeds City. Among the many excellent results were Grade 1 performances by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 300m 40.15s) & Abigail Roberts (1st U15G PV 2.90m), and Grade 2 performances were achieved by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 100m 12.52s), Andrew Jones (1st U15B PV 3.00m) & Bethany Sharp (1st U17W 300mH 45.87s).

8th May 2011. Leeds Half Marathon and Run for All Junior Races.
The club had several runners taking part in the Leeds Half Marathon and the Run for All Junior Races. There were several PBs in the Half Marathon, and Saskia Lewis & Bethany Waldergrave did well to finish 2nd & 3rd in the Junior event.

7th May 2011. First Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 2SE.
The club successfully hosted the first round of Northern Mens & Womens League Division 2SE at Thornes Park Stadium, and finished in a solid 2nd place. We had 'A' string wins by Sally Smith (800m 2m 15.8s), Sarah Bostwick (1500m 5m 03.6s) & Chris Harris (LJ 5.88m), and in addition a grade 1 performance from U20 Lucy Holmes (3rd Shot 11.01m) & a grade 2 from Mark Lindsay (2nd Javelin 53.38m).

5th May 2011. Zara Hohn Opens Her Season in the USA.
Our international hurdler Zara Hohn had her first competitive outing of the year at the UCF Twi-Light Invite meeting in Orlando Florida, USA, along with many other British athletes. She recorded 12.58s for the 100m and 26.33s for the 200m. Meeting Results.

4th May 2011. Second Round of Complete Runner WYT&F League at Wakefield.
The excellent weather ensured a good turnout at the 2nd Complete Runner WYT&F League Meeting at Thornes Park Stadium, with some fine performances from Wakefield athletes. Grade 1 performances were recorded by Grace Eyles (1st U17W 200m 25.28s) and by U20 Lucy Holmes (1st SW Shot 11.36m), and Stephanie Rodgers was very close to a grade 2 with her U15 800m win in 2m 23.62s.

3rd May 2011. Some Good Performances at Trafford Grand Prix Meeting.
At the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford some of the club’s middle distance runners showed good early season form. U17 runner Matthew O'Connor broke the 2 minute barrier for the first time in the 800m with his time of 1m 59.62s, Paul Lockwood had his first track race for many years and recorded 8m 59.08s in the 3000m, and other athletes ran PBs or recorded seasonal bests. 2nd May 2011. Wakefield Ladies Win Team Prize at Rothwell 10k.
At the Rothwell 10k Road Race, which was the 4th round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship, our ladies won the team prize for the 2nd year running. Sarah Beevers was 5th in 39:28, Julie Greenwood 13th in 42:10 (& first F35) and Nicky Steel 20th in 44:16, although a mix up with Julie's entry meant they were overlooked at the presentations. In the mens race Paul Hallas was close to his best, finishing 13th in 34:51 and first M50, and he was followed home by Carl Quinn, 58th in 38:21 and Neil Dutton, 61st in 38:21 with Steve Lowe in the same time, as the team came 8th.

2nd May 2011. Annabel Mason Wins on the Fells Again.
The Masons were in action again on the fells, running in the Coiners Fell race near Mytholmroyd, which was race two in the English Junior Fell Running Championships. Annabell came first girl in the under 16 race, breaking the girls course record, and John came 5th in the seniors race.

1st May 2011. Chris Ward 5th in Bluebell Trail Off-Road Race.
Several Harriers ran in the tough Bluebell Trail off-road race, organised by Stainland Lions, with Chris Ward having an excellent run to finish 5th out of nearly 400 finishers. Race Results.

1st May 2011. First Match of Northern Premier Division of the National Junior League.
The U20 team found the competition tough in the Northern Premier Division of the National Junior League, but still performed well against some big city combined teams, and came 7th in the first match at Preston. Lucy Holmes and Bethany Porter took maximum points in the Shot with fine throws of 10.80m & 9.56m, and William Mulroy was the club's only male winner with 1.90m in the High Jump. U17 Bethany Sharp stepped up to the 400m Hurdles and won the 'B' race in 68.97s, faster than the 'A' race winner, to take our only victory on the track.

30th Apr 2011. Several Harriers Complete Three Peaks Fell Race.

Four intrepid Harriers took part in the gruelling 24 mile Three Peaks Fell Race, which took in the famous Yorkshire peaks of Ingleborough, Penyghent & Whernside. Brian Horsfall was our first runner home, coming 140th overall out of around 1000 starters in 3 hrs 56 mins, and was followed home by Pete McNamara in 4 hrs 30 mins, Andrew Sykes in 4 hrs 43 mins & Steve Wilkinson in 5 hrs 31 mins. 22nd/24th Apr 2011. Distance Runners Easter Weekend Roundup of Results.
John Convery had another outing over 10k, coming 35th in a good quality field at Salford, and improved his best for the year with his time of 35 mins 04 secs. Jasmine Kerry came up from London to compete in the Guisley Gallop, and finished 111th overall and 9th lady out of the field of nearly 500.

21st Apr 2011. Another Victory on the Fells for Annabel Mason.
Annabel Mason was in action on the fells again, competing in the Hartcliffe Hill Race, hosted by Penistone Footpath Runners from near Langsett Barn. The minimum age for the race is 14 and so Annabel was able to compete in the main race, and she came first lady and 10th overall in a time of 17:38, which is just 19 seconds outside the ladies course record. 17th Apr 2011. Several Harriers Compete in the London Mini Marathon.
The Club had a good number of runners selected to compete for Yorkshire & Humberside in the Virgin London Mini Marathon Regional Challenge, which used the last 3 miles of the actual Marathon course before the main race began. Annabel Mason was an excellent 9th in the U15 Girls race, and with Rebecca Firth 52nd, helped Yorkshire & Humberside finish 2nd team. Sally Smith came 36th in the U17 Girls race & Chloe Fitton came 34th in the U13 Girls race. For the boys we had Matthew O'Connor, Jake Worton & Steve Eastwood finisihing 59th, 64th & 68th respectively in the U17 Boys race, and Benjamin Read came 52nd in the U13 Boys race. It must have been a great experience for them all, competing in front of the large crowds, and maybe some of them will have been inspired to compete in future London Marathons. Race Results.

17th Apr 2011. Wakefield Harriers Competing in the Virgin London Marathon.
The club had a small contingent competing in this year's Virgin London Marathon, amongst the field of over 35,000 runners. First home from the club was Paul Minns in a creditable 3 hrs 13 mins, followed by James Morris 3 hrs 27 mins, Martin Holding 3 hrs 34 mins, Ruth Bailey 4 hrs 17 mins, Rachel Parkinson 4 hrs 25 mins & Diane Simmons 4 hrs 28 mins. Most of them ran PBs, despite the warm conditions later on in the race, so our congratulations to them all.

17th Apr 2011. Sheffield 'Festival of Athletics' results.
Several of the club's athletes had their first outing of the season at the Sheffield 'Festival of Athletics', with some good performances recorded. Abigail Roberts jumped a grade 1 2.90m in the U15 Girls Pole Vault, and grade 2 performances were recorded by James Saxton (U17M 800m 2m 00.30s) & Sophie Woollin (U15G 800m 2m 22.61s).
In the Sheffield Lord Mayor's 10K John Convery had his first outing this year over the distance, and finished 9th in a useful 35 mins 09 secs, to go 2nd in this year's club rankings. Julie Greenwood was first in the F35 category with her 44 mins 14 secs.

16th Apr 2011. First Round of Complete Runner WYT&F League at York.
There was nice spring sunshine at the first Complete Runner WYT&F League Meeting at York, producing one new league record. Few Harriers decided to take part, but U17 athlete Grace Eyles showed her versatility with good performances in the 100m (12.91s), 800m (2m 32.74s) and Long Jump (4.87m), indicating that an excellent Heptathlon may be on the cards this season.

10th Apr 2011. Superb New Club Record for Grace Eyles at Wakefield Spring Open Meeting.
As last year there was an excellent turnout of over 400 athletes for the Spring Open Medals Meeting, with visitors from all over the North of England coming to Thornes Park Stadium, attracted by the wide programme of events, the electrical timing, and the warm sunny day!
Grace Eyles made the most of the excellent conditions to record a superb New U17 Club 300m Record of 39.91 secs, to beat the previous best previously held jointly by Laura Robinson and Rosie Hackney. Grace also ran a PB of 12.46 secs in the 100m, another Grade 1 performance, and Grade 2 performances were achieved by Lucy Holmes (U20 Shot 10.77m), Chiedu Ufodiama (Sen Discus 41.59m) & Craig Westermann (U20 Discus 41.79m).

The club also took the opportunity to make presentations to Vera Grindle and Barry Skeels, for the many long years of valuable service that they have given to the club, and they were also invited to present some of the medals to the successful athletes.

10th Apr 2011. Another Superb Marathon Time by Julie Briscoe at Brighton.
Julie Briscoe recorded another superb Marathon time, registering an excellent 2 hrs 41 mins 09 secs when finishing 3rd lady and 13th overall in the Brighton Marathon. No doubt she will have been a bit disappointed not to record a PB, after her recent Half Marathon PB at Wilmslow, but it was still a fantastic performance in the warm conditions, and was only 23 seconds slower than her best from Toronto last year. 10 Apr 2011. Abigail Roberts Breaks Club U17 & U15 Outdoor Pole Vault Record.
At the Kingston-Upon-Hull Spring Open Meeting Abigail Roberts jumped a New Club U17 & U15 Pole Vault Record of 3.00m, with a clearance that equalled her indoor record that she set at Sheffield earlier in the year. Meeting Results from Power of 10.

3rd Apr 2011. Victory for Helen Singleton & Ladies Team in Wakefield Hospice 10k.

The annual Wakefield Hospice 10k race once again attracted a large field of well over 1000 runners, with many Harriers competing in the event which incorporated the Club 10k Road Race Championship & the 3rd round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship. Helen Singleton was an excellent winner of the ladies race, for the 2nd year running, and was close to her PB coming 14th overall in 35 mins 19 secs, and with Sarah Bostwick 2nd lady home in 38:54 and Nicky Steel 9th in 44:27 the ladies won their team prize.
The club had it's youngest ever winner of the Club 10k trophy, when 16 year old Matthew O'Connor finished 11th overall in 34 mins 58 secs. He was closely followed by Team Captain Chris Ward, who ran a new PB of 35:12 in 13th place, and with our M50 star Paul Hallas 21st in 35:37, the men's team finished 3rd. It was good to see former Yorkshire 800m Champion Steve Lowe back competing, running a respectable 37:22 just ahead of fellow M35 vets Neil Dutton & Matthew Dodsworth, who ran 37:25 & 37:39 respectively. M40 Paul Robinson is improving rapidly and ran 38:52, and 73 year old Brian Fozzard continues to inspire with his time of 49:53, to take the M70 prize. Race Results and more photos from photofixit.

3rd Apr 2011. Dave Brailsford First M55 at Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix Series Race 1.
Several of our veteran men took part in the first of the Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix series, at Horsforth, and finished 7th team overall. They were led home by the in-form Dave Brailsford, who finished in an excellent 9th place overall and first in the M55 category. Race Results.
