17th September 2005. Women's Team Finish 2nd in Yorkshire Road Relays.
The Senior Women's team were defending their Yorkshire Road Relay title at the Don Valley Stadium at
Sheffield, but had to settle this year for 2nd place behind Hallamshire. The team of Penny Thackray,
Angie Dickie, Shirley Griffiths and Julie O'Mara started out as favourites, and were leading
for most of the way, but were just beaten on the run-in. Penny ran the 2nd fastest time of the day.
The Women's 2nd team finished a creditable 5th , and the Senior Men finished 14th, with U20 Chris Price the team's fastest runner. In the younger age
groups road races, our U13 girls finished 4th team, and the U15 girls were 8th team. Results of all races from Sportsoft
11th September 2005. Junior Women finish 6th in NJL National Final.
Our Junior Women's team finished an excellent 6th in the National Junior League National
Final at Derby, and finished 2nd club from the north. It was another great team performance by the
girls to finish sixth in Great Britain, and it was also a great individual achievement by Zara
Hohn, who won the Athletics Weekly Grand Prix for 2005, for the 2nd year in succession, and
was also named track athlete of the match.
Our 'A' string winners in the match were Zara in the 100mH, Adee Lassu (HJ), and Laura Whittingham
with a double victory in the Javelin and Shot. Another outstanding performance was by Mikaela
Harrison who came 2nd in the 400m with a New U20 and U17 Club 400m Record of 57.16s. Team Result :- Blackheath & Bromley 245, Trafford 216, Shaftsbury Barnet 206,

4th September 2005. Harriers in Record Form at WYT&F League Championships.
At the WYT&F League Championships at Cleckheaton there were Championship Records for Hannah Yates,
with 6.25m in the U11 Shot, and for Lucy Holmes with 4.32m in the U13 Long Jump. Lucy also won
the 80m and Grace Eyles the U11 Long Jump, with Fiona Thomas winning 3 senior events. We also had
William Rotherford winning the U11 75m, and Richard Higson-Blythe and Jonathan Shearn winning
the mens 100m, 200m & 400m.

4th September 2005. Vets Team win Team prize in Leeds Country Way Relay.
The Mens Vets team had a good result in this year's Leeds Country Way Relay, finishing 8th team

3rd/4th September 2005. Mikaela Harrison wins U17 Yorkshire Heptathlon Title.
Better known as a sprinter, Mikaela showed her versatility by winning the U17 Ladies Yorkshire
Heptathlon title at Rotherham with 4055 points. Mark Smith and Darren Thomas finished 2nd and 3rd in the Senior
Mens competition.
3rd September 2005. Laura Whittingham Smashes Club Javelin Record.
Laura made a major breakthrough at the UK Challenge meeting at Sports City, Manchester, by
throwing a marvellous New Club U20 & Senior Javelin Record of 50.57m. She won the competition
and moved into the top 5 in the UK Senior rankings with this throw, and 2nd in the U20 rankings.
Zara Hohn also performed well against senior opposition, with 2nd in the 100mH in 14.09s, and 7th in the 100m.

21st August 2005. Emily Freeman Competes against Olympic Champion at Sheffield.
Emily continues to make news towards the end of the season, being invited to run in the 100m at
the Norwich Union Grand Prix at Sheffield. She found her self lining up alongside the Olympic
Champion and other world stars, and aquitted herself well in finishing 9th.

20th August 2005. Zara Hohn tops National Junior League Individual Grand Prix.
Zara's huge contribution to the National Junior League team has meant that she is the top points
scorer in the country this season, and is invited to take part in the Athletics Weekly Grand
Prix final on 11th September. Our Junior Women's team will be competing there too, after finishing
fourth in the Northern Premier division.

16th August 2005. Emily Freeman Finishes 8th in World University Games.
Originally just chosen for the 4x100m Relay at the World University Games, at Izmir, Turkey,
Emily was finally rewarded with an individual run in the 100m. She reached the final, finishing
8th, after being the fastest qualifier in the semi-finals.

14th August 2005. Results of the 7th and Final WYT&F League Meeting.
At the 7th WYT&F League meeting at Cleckheaton the Harriers consolidated their position
at the top of the league, winning both mens and womens overall league titles by a clear margin.
Grace Eyles was the overall winner of the U11 title, Lucy Holmes was the U13 champion,
Mikaela Harrison took the U17 title and Fiona Thomas was Senior Ladies champion.

12th August 2005. Emily Freeman Runs in 4 x 100m Relay for Great Britain.
Emily ran a fine first leg for Great Britain in the 4x100m Relay at the World Athletics Championships
at Helsinki, Finland, but unfortunately the GB team didn't make it to the final.
The club has had 3 Olympians in the past, through Steve Hollings (1972 3000m SC), Alan Bell
(1980 400m) and Alan Slack (1984 4 x 400m Relay), but this is the first time since the World
Championships began in 1983 that the club has had a representative in them.
Our congratulations to Emily once again for this fine achievement.

7th August 2005. Another Third Place in North of England League Division 1.
The combined mens and womens team had another good all round team performance to finish third
again, in the fourth match in Division 1 of the North of England League at Blackpool.
Athletes winning their events were Chris Kirk (LJ), Ruth Dales (100mH), Suzanne Roberts (HT),
Fiona Thomas (Shot) and Caroline Nutt (PV). Team Result :- Gateshead 458, Sale 415, Wakefield 369, Leeds C 351, Blackpool 337,

31st July 2005. Young Athletes finish 3rd in Final YA League Meeting.
At the 5th and final match of the Northern Premier division of the Young Athletes League at
the Wirral, there were some very fast times from our sprinters. Lucy Holmes' U13 75m & 150m
runs in 10.2s and 20.3s were grade 1 standard, as was Mikaela Harrison's U17 300m win in 40.6s,
very close to the club record. There were also grade 2 performances from Ben Mitchell (U17
100m in 11.6s), Craig Westerman (U13 SP 9.15m), Mikaela Harrison (U17 200m in 25.9s) and
Hannah Plumb (U13 150m in 20.7s). Also notable were double victories by Matthew Twidale (U17
HT & JT), Katie McHale (U17 800m & 1500m) and Rosie Hackney (U15 200m & LJ).
The team finished 3rd, a result that leaves them 14th overall in the Northern Premier. Match Result :- Wirral 449, Hallamshire 349, Wakefield 327.5, Wrexham 320.5.

30th July 2005. Women's Team Finish 7th Overall in UK Women's League Division 1.
Once again the team were without leading athletes, and we finished 7th once more in the
third and final match at Manchester. Aine Hoban finished 2nd in the 3000m, Zara Hohn was 3rd in
the 100mH, Laura Jarvis was 3rd in the HJ and there was another fine performance by Laura
Whittingham, throwing close to her recent club record, and finishing 3rd in the Javelin.

28th July 2005. Emily Freeman Selected to run for Great Britain in World Championships.
Emily has gained another international selection, this time being chosen for the 4x100m
Relay at the World Athletics Championships, which will take place at Helsinki, Finland,

27th July 2005. Another Good Harriers Turnout in WYT&F League.
At the 6th WYT&F League meeting at Leeds there was a good turnout from Wakefield Harriers, with
several individual winners once again. Grace Eyles was our star of the night, winning all 3 of

24th July 2005. Junior Mens team Win First National Junior League Match.
In their 4th match at Stretford the Junior Men excelled themselves with an outstanding win
in the Pennine division, well clear of league leaders and host club Trafford. It was a great
all round team effort, and the team victory was helped by double victories from Nathan Elliot
and Chris Price in the 1500m, Matthew Twidale and Michael Knighton in the Javelin, and Rob Lee
and Mark Leasey in the Triple Jump. It was the team's first win of the season, and lifts them
into 2nd place in their division. Team result :- Wakefield 283, Trafford 253, Spenborough 246, Harrogate 204,
Rowntrees 169.5, Bingley 167.5, Burnley 130.5, Bolton 25.

24th July 2005. Junior Women 5th in National Junior League.
In the 4th match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division at Mansfield, the girls
were below strength, and could only manage 5th this time, a result which leaves them 4th in
the division. The best results came from the throwers, with Laura Whittingham winning the
Javelin and Shot, and Rebecca Burch having a good win in the
Discus. We also had a double victory in the High Jump from Adele Lassu and Laura Jarvis. Team result :- Trafford 240, Edinburgh Southern 214.5, Liverpool H 209, Sale 201,

23rd July 2005. Laura Whittingham Breaks Club Javelin Record.
The club had four of its leading athletes competing for the North of England in a representative
match at Birminham, and Laura Whittingham excelled herself by throwing a New Club U20 & Senior
Javelin Record of 45.24m, finishing 2nd in her event. Also competing for the North were
Emily Freeman in the 100m, Penny Thackray in the 1500m and Suzanne Roberts in the Hammer.
22nd July 2005. Zara Hohn Competes for Great Britain in European Junior Championships.
Zara made her international debut in the 100m Hurdles at the European Junior Championships,
at Kaunas, Lithuania. She was disappointed not to be able to progress beyond the heats, but it
was still a great experience for her, and hopefully the first of many international selections.

18th July 2005. Emily Freeman Selected for World University Games.
Our top sprinter has gained her latest international selection, being chosen for the 4x100m
Relay at the World University Games, which will take place at Izmir, Turkey, starting on 15th
August. Our congratulations to Emily on this latest selection.
17th July 2005. Combined Senior team 2nd in Golden Jubilee Cup Semi-Final.
The combined mens and womens team had a good result in this semi-final match at Stoke, finishing
2nd behind cup holders Birchfield.
The men were very depleted, particularly in the distance events, but still managed to gain several
2nd and 3rd places through Mark Keeler, Darren Thomas and Nathan Elliot.
The women had more success, with wins for Ruth Dales (100mH), Tracy Hilton (400mH),
L Jervis (HJ), Caroline Nutt (PV), and Laura Whittingham (JT). Team Result :- Birchfield 301, Wakefield 205, Newport 193, Stoke 177, Cannock & Stafford 131,

12th July 2005. Zara Hohn Selected for European Junior T&F Championships.
Zara became Wakefield Harriers' latest international athlete when she gained selection for the
100m Hurdles at the European Junior Championships, which will take place at Kaunas, Lithuania,
on 21-24 July. Zara is a fantastically talented athlete, and the club is very proud of her
achievement. We wish her well, and hope this will be the start of a long and successful
international career.

9th/10th July 2005. Suzanne Roberts and Emily Freeman in top 5 at AAA Championships.
At the AAA Championships and World Championship Trials at Manchester Suzanne and Emily were both
close to their best in finishing 5th in the Hammer and 100m respectively. Emily was even
quicker in her semi-final, running 11.60s, which is close to her club record. Chris Kirk, still not
back to full fitness, finished 11th in the Long Jump.

2nd July 2005. Club Finish Third Again in North of England League Division 1.
In a close match in Division 1 of the North of England League, the combined mens and womens
team finished third again, in the third match at Gateshead.
The Women were particularly strong, winning several events through Kelly Johnson (800m), Tracy
Hilton (400mH), Ruth Dales (100mH) Fiona Thomas (Shot) and Ruth Laybourne (LJ).
The team now lie 3rd in the League with one match left. Team Result :- Leeds C 437, Sale 432, Wakefield 385.5, Gateshead 382.5, Bolton 375,
