2002 News & Results
27th December 2002. UK Senior Track & Field Rankings for 2002.
Wakefield's wonderful womens team, led by our 3 Commonwealth Games representatives, had an excellent
year, with 14 athletes ranked in the UK top 50, and with the top trio in the top 5 :-
Emily Freeman finished 7th in the 100m (11.58), 5th in the 200m (23.43), and 13th in the 400m (54.02);
Kerry Jury finished 3rd in the Heptathlon (5657 pts), 31st in the 200m (24.44), 16th in the 100mH
(13.82), 9th in the Long Jump (6.14) and 17th in the High Jump (1.77);
Suzanne Roberts was 5th in the Hammer (60.38);
Penny Thackray finished 31st in the 3000m (9:34.9), 17th in the 5000m (16:25.01) and 22nd in the 10000
(35:49.98);
Sarah Beevers was 10th in the 2000m S/C (7:29.03);
Sue Backhouse was 13th in the Discus (47.31);
Caroline Nutt (U20) was 23rd in the Pole Vault (3.50);
Judith Payne was 29th in the High Jump (1.70);
Fiona Westwood was 32nd in the Long Jump (5.79);
Charlene Snelgrove was 42nd in the 800m (2:09.16);
Ruth Dales was ranked 43rd in the 100mH (14.51/14.4);
Vicky Lambert (U20) was 45th in the Triple Jump (11.54);
Sarah Drake (U20) was 48th in the Hammer (42.65);
Naida Bromley (U17) was 50th in the Long Jump (5.67 & 5.95w).
In a quiet season for the men, just one athlete was ranked in the UK top 50 :-
Chris Kirk (U17) was 46th in the Long Jump (7.06w);

22nd December 2002. Craig Heppenstall wins Denby Dale 6
With Brian Horsfall finishing 3rd and Dave Brailsford 7th, Wakefield win the team race.
14th December 2002. Edinburgh Reebok Challenge
Nathan Elliot finished a creitable 20th in the U15 race, the best result of his three attempts in the
Reebok Challenge.
Aine Hoban, running in a Northern Vest, finished 20th in a hotly contested Sen/Jun Race and second U20,
with many of the GB Euro team also running. Julie O'Mara finished 36th as she builds up for a 1/2
Marathon early in the new year.
3rd December. West Yorkshire Track & Field League. Full information about the
league is now on the web in a new set of W.Y. T.& F. Pages.
These contain all the results and cumulative scores from 2002, and all the league records.
24th November. Two Wakefield girls are top of the UK rankings !
English Schools U15 Discus Champion Chloe Beckett is joint top of this years U15 rankings with 35.47 m,
and is also ranked 6th with 32.72 in the Javelin.
AAA U17 Heptathlon Champion Naida Bromley tops the U17 Long Jump lists with her windy 5.95 m, and is
also ranked 2nd in the Heptathlon rankings with her winning score of 4574 points.
9th November. Senior Ladies finish 9th in National Cross Country Relays at Mansfield.
The 'B' team finish close behind in 13th, and the 'C' team once again show the strength in depth of the Ladies
team by finishing 25th.

26th October. Senior Ladies finish an excellent 8th in AAA 4-Stage Road Relays at Birmingham.
The 'B' team finish 21st, and the 'C' team show the strength in depth of the Ladies
team by finishing 30th. Young Aine Hoban has an excellent run for fastest Wakefield runner.

May 2002. Andrew Rivett Breaks Record for John O'Groats to Land's End.
Our ultra-distance runner Andrew Rivett got himself in the Guiness Book of Records by breaking
the record for running from John O'Groats to Land's End. He completed the 977 miles in an
astonishing 9 days 2 hours and 26 minutes, covering 90 miles or more per day.
A truly amazing achievement, so well done to Andy.
Apologies, but we had no webmaster in 2002 before 1st October, so we have no news on the site
before this date in 2002.
