2023 Club News October - December

24th Dec 2023. Thornes Park Stadium and Club Christmas Closures.
Thornes Park Stadium will be closed over Christmas and the New Year, and will not re-open until Tuesday 2nd January. However, due to holidays and a shortage of helpers, there will be no official Club Nights until Tues 9th January, and so the Club Cabin will not reopen until then.
Some coaching groups will be training during the first week in January, so please check with your coach, and anyone wanting to train on the track during that week must pay the stadium.

19th Dec 2023. Harry Beck Wins Junior Christmas Handicap Race.

Harry Beck was the winner of this year's Junior Christmas Handicap Race, just 3 seconds ahead of Oliver Smith, and with Oliver Potter finishing 3rd. The fastest time was recorded by Rosie Thislewood. Download Race Results in Excel.

19th Dec 2023. Laura Sellers Wins Senior Christmas Handicap Race.

32 runners competed in the Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race over the traditional 4.5 mile course, twice round the perimeter of the park, and with a lap round the running track at the end.
This year's winner of the John Newsome Memorial Handicap Trophy was Laura Sellers, who becomes the first lady winner since 2015. Indeed it was a good night for the ladies, with 12 taking part this year. Laura has made huge advances this year, and was recently presented with the 'Most Improved Runner' award at the annual prizegiving evening. She ran well a minute and a half quicker than her estimated time, so is a worthy winner. Another big advance was made by Chris Nother in 2nd, and U17 Jessica Watson ran well to finish 3rd in her first attempt at the event.
Running conditions were quite good, which helped produce some decent times. Jake Worton was fastest this year with a fine time of 24:03, in his run in the event since 2009, and U20 runner Euan Gaskin also made a big improvement to record 24:37 Suzanne Brooke was the fastest lady once again with 27:29, which moves her up to 8th place in the ladies all-time list.
The handicapping worked out well, with two thirds of the runners finishing within a minute of their expected times. Nicky Steel took the award this year for being closest to her expected time, running to the second her time predicted. It was great to see the ladies course record holder Helen Wiseman (formerly Singleton) taking part once again, on holiday from her new home in Australia.
A big thank you to all those who organise the event, and to all the marshals and recorders who helped out. Download Race Results in Excel.

The Telford 10k, which once again incorporated the England 10k Championships, produced a lot of very fast times, as usual. Two of those were recorded by two Harriers who were competing. The English National Cross Country Relay Championships at Mansfield were held in very wet conditions this year, and the course was extremely muddy in places. However, that didn't deter many of England's leading middle distance and long distance runners from all over England from turning up to take part in the prestigious event. Wakefield Harriers had several teams competing, and they all did well.

The Senior Ladies team had an excellent result, with sisters Abbey and Suzanne Brooke competing together in the same team for the first time, and along with the in-form Libby Greatorex, they all ran superbly to finish 19th. Wakefield Harriers were the 3rd club home from Yorkshire. The 'B' team of Chloe Fitton, Georgina Yoh & Team Captain Angela Dales also did well to finish 59th out of the 131 competing teams. 2nd Oct 2023. The Wakefield Harriers 2023 AGM
At the Annual General Meeting held at Thornes Park Stadium there were a few changes to the Club Committee. Our former Olympian Alan Slack has now retired as Club Treasurer, after 15 years of excellent service, so a big thank you Alan from everyone at the club. Rob Ford has kindly agreed to take over the role. Most committee members agreed to continue in their positions for another year, but we welcome several new additions to the team.
It was also agreed that due to the increase in England Athletics affiliation fees, and other cost increases, the annual club membership fees would rise by £5 next April, to £55 for senior athletes, and £45 for young athletes. Training fees on club night will remain unchanged.
Here's the latest list of Club Committee members on the Club Contacts page.
