2022 Club News April - June

30th Jun 2022. Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League Race 6.
The 6th event in the Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League was the Hyde Park Summer Mile, with 14 races being held over the one mile course. The club had 8 runners competing, with Ben Butler having the fastest time with his 5th place in heat 10 in 4:34. Simon Midwood won heat 14 in 4:52, and he was followed home in that heat by Stewart Knowles 4th in 4:47, Chris Hunter 8th in 5:01 and Ashley Crow 13th in 5:11. Results Link.
In the Distance League Stewart Knowles has extended his lead over Daz Hewitt, with Helen Beck leading the ladies.

25th/26th Jun 2022. Road Racing Weekend Roundup.
Wakefield Harriers dominated the Darrington 5 Mile road race, taking the first three places. Ben Butler was a clear winner, breaking the course record with a time of 26 mins 24 secs, and he was followed home by Chris Hunter and Stewart Knowles, with Ashley Crowe not far behind in 5th place. Download Results. The race was also the 5th event in the 2022 Distance League, which now sees Stewart Knowles with a narrow lead over Daz Hewitt.
Two Harriers competed in the Hollybank Eccup 10 Mile road race, which incorporated the YVAA 10 Mile Championship. Julie Briscoe was 2nd lady and 31st overall in 63:56, a good time on an undulating course in windy conditions. She was also 1st in the F45 category, and so took the YVAA title. Helen Beck finished 2nd in the F40 category in 67:24. Results Link.

25th/26th Jun 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc Wins UK 5000m Title.



Amy-Eloise Markovc won her first UK outdoor title, as she convincingly won the 5000m at the Muller UK Athletics Championships at Manchester. In a tactical race, which built up to a very fast last 800m, she got the better of Jessica Judd on the last lap, to win the race in 15 mins 37.23 secs. As Amy-Eloise already has the qualifying time of 15 mins 10 secs under her belt, from 2021, she thus gains automatic selection for the World Championships which will be taking place in Eugene, Oregon, USA from July 15th–24th.
Leonie Ashmeade also had a good championships, coming 4th in the semi-final of the 100m in 11.57s, after finishing 2nd in her heat in 11.55s. These are the fastest times she has ever run, but they were wind assisted, so sadly won't count as PBs. Results Link.

22nd Jun 2022. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 4.
There was a good turnout at the fourth meeting of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League, held at Cleckheaton on a very warm evening, and there were good wins from Ethan Ford (U11B LJ 3.81m), Daliso Mwaba (U13B 800m 2m 32.15s) and Ella Bickerdyke (U17W 200m 26.50s).
Wakefield Harriers continue to lead in the team standings in the league, and we still have three Harriers leading the individual standings :- Ethan Ford (U11 Boys), Ben Smith (U17 Men) and Alexander Bostwick (U20 Men).

22nd Jun 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc Selected to Run for England in Commonwealth Games.


Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc has been selected to compete for England in both the 5000m and 10000m at the Commonwealth Games. The Games are being held in Birmingham, and the athletics starts with the marathon on Saturday 30 July with the track and field events running from Tuesday 2 August to Sunday 7 August. 21st Jun 2022. Stadium Closure Due to By-election on Thursday 23rd June.
Please note that Thornes Park Stadium will be closed on Thursday 23rd June, as the building is being used for counting votes in the By-election. So there will be no club training at the stadium on Thursday, but please check with your coach if alternative training will be available..

18th/19th Jun 2022. Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships at Liverpool.



There were just three Harriers competing at the Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships at Liverpool, with two making it to the finals. Thomas Wood won silver in the U20M 100m in a PB time of 10.95s, and also recorded 22.67s in the heats of the 200m, whilst Mark Bostock (pictured above) finished 7th in the SM 5000m in 14m 55.59s after setting the early pace. 12th Jun 2022. Bradford Millennium Way Relay.
The club did well to turn out 2 good teams of 10 to compete in the Bradford Millennium Way Relay, a challenging long distance off-road relay of 47 miles, involving 6300 ft of climbing.
The Men's team finished an excellent 2nd team, for the third time in succession, behind a very strong team from Wharfedale. They recorded their 3rd fastest ever time for the event, which was a good performance in the windy conditions. Chris Hunter & Stewart Knowles ran a new 'club record' on leg 2, and Ben Butler & Andrew Teasdale were close to the club best on leg 1, which they won.
The Vets team also did well to finish 15th overall and 3rd in category, of the 37 competing teams.

12th Jun 2022. North of England Track & Field League Match 2.
At the second match in the 'East Premier' division of the North of England Track & Field League at Rotherham, the club once again finished 4th. With a shortage of athletes, team managers Joseph Flitcroft and Lucy Holmes led by example, competing in five events each. Download Results in PDF.

11th Jun 2022. County Schools Athletics Association T&F Championships.
There were several Harriers competing for their school districts in the North, South and West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Association Track & Field Championships. Results Links :-

10th-12th Jun 2022. BMAF Track & Field Championships.
We had several athletes competing at the BMAF Track & Field Championships at Derby, and they came away with 7 medals. Amanda Potter won the W35 100m and came 2nd in the 200m, Lynsie Whyke won the W40 LJ and the TJ, and Jennifer Ibbitson won the W65 SP, the DT and the WT5.45K.
Also doing well were Richard Higson-Blythe, who came 2nd in his heat of the M45 100m, 3rd in his heat of the 200m, and 4th in the TJ, and Stephen Thorpe, who was 2nd in his heat of the M45 200m, and then 5th in the LJ. Results Link.

6th Jun 2022. Wakefield Harriers May Athletes of the Month - Joshua Akintolu & Jennifer Ibbitson.


This month the Committee decided that once again there were two athletes deserving the Athlete of the Month accolade for May, and once again they are at opposite ends of the age spectrum.
For breaking the U13 Boys High Jump Club Record, which was previously held by future Olympian Martyn Bernard, Joshua Akintolu is one of our Athletes of the Month.
For competing in several events in the Northern League, and for continuing to win medals in the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships at the age of 65, Jennifer Ibbitson has also been voted our Athlete of the Month for May.
Well done to both Joshua & Jennifer!

5th Jun 2022. Yorkshire & District Athletics League Match 2.
At the second match of the Yorkshire & District Athletics League at Grimsby, Wakefield Harriers once again came out on top, ahead of Cleethorpes, Barnsley and Longwood.

5th Jun 2022. Another New Club 3000m Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Amy-Eloise Markovc competed in the 3000m at the Wanda Diamond League Meeting at Rabat in Morocco, and after a strong performance she finished an excellent 2nd in a very close race, just behind Mercy Cherono, formerly a silver medallist over 5000m in the World Championships. Amy-Eloise ran a New Club 3000m Record of 8 mins 40.32 sec, beating her previous record she set last year. Download Meeting Results.
Her time moves her up to 13th in the UK Women's All-Time 3000m List.

2nd Jun 2022. Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter-Counties Championship.



Three members of Wakefield Harriers were selected to compete for Yorkshire at the Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter-Counties Championship, held at York. Cole McAndrew competed in the U15B 800m, Zachary Rayner in the U17M 400m, and Ben Smith in the U17M Long Jump and the relay. Results Link.

1st Jun 2022. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 3.
Lily Keeler continued her record breaking form at the third meeting of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Cleckheaton, winning the U11 Girls Shot with a New U11 Girls Shot West Yorkshire Track & Field League Record of 7.53m, improving the previous record she had set in April. Other Harriers highlights were the U15 Girls 1500m victory by Evie Tunney in 5m 08.70s, the Senior Womens 100m & Discus double victory by Lucy Holmes, and the U11 Boys 75m win by Ethan Ford in 11.14s.
Wakefield Harriers continue to have a good lead in the team standings in the league, and we still have five Harriers leading the individual standings :- Ethan Ford (U11 Boys), Cole McAndrew (U15 Boys), Ben Smith (U17 Men), Alexander Bostwick (U20 Men) & Lily Keeler (U11 Girls).

31st May 2022. Stadium Closure Due to Bank Holidays.
Please note that Thornes Park Stadium and track will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week, due to the Jubilee Bank Holidays. So there will be no club training at the stadium on Thursday 2nd June.

22nd May 2022. Another New U11 Girls Shot Record for Lily Keeler.
There were a good number of Wakefield Harriers competing in the Pontefract Open Meeting, held at Cudworth. The standout performance was from Lily Keeler in the U11 Girls Shot, throwing a New U11 Girls Shot Club Record of 7.90m, making another big improvement on the record she set last month. 18th May 2022. Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League Race 4.



After the cancellation of the Askern 10k, it was replaced in the Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League by the Newmillerdam 'Quacky Trail' Race. The club had 14 runners competing, and came away with a good haul of trophies. Helen Beck won the Ladies prize, and 3rd home overall was Stewart Knowles. Also winning age group trophies were M40 Paul Gilbert, M50 Darren Hewitt and M60 Mark Whitehouse. Results Link.

17th May 2022. Mark Bostock Becomes 6th Wakefield Harrier to Break 3:50 for 1500m.
Mark Bostock became the 6th member of Wakefield Harriers to have broken the 3:50 barrier for 1500m. He recorded 3:49.25 when finishing 2nd in the 'A' race at the BMC Gold Standard Meeting at Stretford. Results Link.

15th May 2022. Road Racing Weekend Roundup.
Nicky Steel competed in the ESSAR Chester Half Marathon, which was part of the England Athletics Masters representative race programme, and so included many of the country's leading masters runners. She had qualified to wear an England representative masters vest, and did very well to finish 22nd lady, and 4th in the F45 category, in 87:03. Results Link.
There was a strong contingent of Wakefield Harriers competing in the Pontefract 10k road race. Ben Butler 34:08, Chris Hunter 34:46, Simon Midwood 34:57 & Stewart Knowles 35:16 all ran strongly to finish 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th respectively, to easily win the team prize. Andrew Teasdale wasn't too far behind finishing 13th in 35:57, and Angela Dales finished first in the F50 category. Results Link.

14th/15th May 2022. Yorkshire Track & Field Championships, Cudworth.
There was a good turnout of Wakefield Harriers at the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships at Cudworth, and they came away with a haul of 21 medals.
Gold medals were won by :- Leonie Ashmeade (SW 100m 11.96s), Jennifer Ibbitson (SW PV 2.00m) & Ella Bickerdyke (U20W 200m 25.86s).
Silver medal winners were :- Leonie Ashmeade (SW 200m 24.85s), Suzie Brooke (U20W 1500m 4m 54.20s), Ellie Fedzin (U20W HJ 1.55m), Rosie Thistlewood (U15G 3000m 10m 58.91s), Cole McAndrew (U15B 800m 2m 07.75s & HJ 1.45m) & Harry Pearcy (U15B 300m 39.48s).
Bronze medals were won by :- James Simms (SM HJ 1.75m & SP 10.59m), Jennifer Ibbitson (SW JT 18.94m), Lucy Holmes (SW 100m 12.83s), Amy Hunt (U20 LJ 5.23m), Liam Greaves (U20M 100m 11.33s), Alexander Bostwick (U20M SP 10.13m), Chloe Kaye (U20 HJ 1.50m), Zachary Rayner (U17M 400m 54.55s), Harry Pearcy (U15B 200m 24.94s) & Cole McAndrew (U15B 300m 39.85s).

14th May 2022. Another New Club 10000m Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.



Amy-Eloise Markovc competed in the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10000m PB's event, held at Parliament Hill in North London, and which included the British Championships and World Championships Trials. She finished 2nd, behind Jessica Judd, and recorded a New Club 10000m Record of 31 mins 25.57 sec, trimming a few tenths off her previous record she set 12 months ago to the day. Her time betters the UKA European Championships A Standard of 32:20.00, but is tantalizingly 0.57s off the UKA World Championships A Standard of 31:25.00. Results Link.

11th May 2022. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 2.
There was another good turnout of younger members of the Harriers at the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League at Cleckheaton, and as a result Wakefield Harriers now have a good lead in the team standings in the league.
We also have five Harriers leading the individual standings :- Ethan Ford (U11 Boys), Cole McAndrew (U15 Boys), Ben Smith (U17 Men), Alexander Bostwick (U20 Men) & Lily Keeler (U11 Girls).

9th May 2022. Wakefield Harriers April Athletes of the Month - Lily Keeler & Keith Brindle.

For running an inaugural M70 Marathon Club Record, which was also a new M65 Marathon Club Record, Keith Brindle has also been voted our Athlete of the Month for April.

30th Apr - 2nd May 2022. BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships.
At the British Universities & Colleges Outdoor Athletics Championships at Chelmsford there were some great results from members of Wakefield Harriers, who were representing their university or college.
Leonie Ashmeade, competing at her first BUCS outdoor championships, came away with a Bronze medal in the Women's 100m. She ran 11.84s in her heat, followed by a 11.71s PB in the semi-finals, and then finished 3rd in the final with 11:81s.
Rachel Crorken made a great comeback after two seasons hampered with injury, and just missed out on a bronze medal in the 400m. She finished 4th in the final with a time of 55.23s, very close to her PB, after running 56.64s in her heat, and 56.29 in her semi-final.
Mark Bostock ran a fine new track PB of 14 mins 33.57s in the 5000m, finishing 2nd in the 2nd heat, and 14th overall in the championship.

1st May 2022. Yorkshire & District Athletics League Match 1.
At the first match of the Yorkshire & District Athletics League at Cleckheaton the club had a great start. Wakefield Harriers came out on top, ahead of Cleethorpes and Longwood. The best performance by a Harrier was a New Club U13 Boys HJ Record of 1.60m from Joshua Akintolu, beating the previous record of 1.55m, set by future Olympian Martyn Bernard in 1997.

30th Apr 2022. North of England Track & Field League Match 1.
At the first match in the 'East Premier' division of the North of England Track & Field League at York, the club did well to finish 4th, even though many athletes were missing. Daniel Franks was the club's top performers, winning the 'A' 800m in 1m 56.42s & 'A' 3000m S/C in 10m 02.92s. Also deserving a special mention is Jennifer Ibbitson, who now in the F65 age category, scored points for the club in the Pole Vault, Discus, Hammer & Javelin. Download Results in PDF.

29th Apr 2022. Stadium Closure Due to Local Elections.

25th Apr 2022. Senior Throws Coach Mick Swain Passes Away.



Wakefield Harriers are very sorry to announce the really sad news of the passing of Mick Swain, at the age of 75, after being ill for some time. Mick started his athletics career as a runner, and ran the London Marathon three times, and the Three Peaks once. He learned to coach the Hammer when son Anthony showed an interest, and was clearly successful, as Anthony went on to become English Schools Champion, and has held the club record since 1997. Mick became an outstanding Throws Coach, and he gave well over 30 years of service to the club, coaching and inspiring many throwers to the highest levels. He was widely liked and respected, and he will be missed by all who knew him. The club sends its condolences to Mike's family.
Mike's funeral is to be held on Thursday 19th of May at 1.20pm at Wakefield Crematorium.

24th Apr 2022. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 1.
The West Yorkshire Track & Field League got off to a good start, with the first meeting at Cleckheaton producing no fewer than three new league records. One of those was achieved by Wakefield Harrier Lily Keeler in the U11 Girls Shot, with an excellent performance, throwing a New U11 Girls Shot Club Record of 7.47m. This easily bettered the previous record of 6.96m, set by Molly Dunbavin in 2009. There was another good Shot performance with Lucy Holmes throwing 11.26m in the Senior Women's Shot, which is a Grade 2 performance.
There was a good turnout of younger members of the Harriers, and as a result Wakefield Harriers have taken an early lead in the league.

18th Apr 2022. New M65 & M70 Club Marathon Record for Keith Brindle.



In the Boston Marathon (UK), the one held in Lincolnshire, Keith Brindle became the first known member of Wakefield Harriers to complete a marathon at the age of 70. Way back in 1983 Keith ran a 2 hrs 46 mins marathon, but long term injuries have held him back in recent years. However he was able to put in enough training to complete the marathon in 4 hrs 17 mins 18 secs, which is not only an inaugural M70 Marathon Club Record, but also a new M65 Marathon Club Record, as he was well inside the previously listed M65 record held by Brian Cooper. 10th Apr 2022. Another M55 10K Club Record for Chris Rippon.
Returning to the event where he first broke the age group record last year, the 'Big Flat Runway Race' at Elvington Airfield near York, Chris Rippon ran a new M55 10K Club Record of 39 mins 08 secs, beating his previous record by 19 seconds. Well done Chris! Results Link.

16th Apr 2022. Silver Medals for Senior Men at Yorkshire Road Relays.


The Yorkshire Road Relays returned to Wakefield, held at a new venue on the cycle track at St. Thomas a Becket School.
The Wakefield Harriers Senior Men's team of Mark Bostock, Daniel Franks, Ben Butler & Andrew Cartwright finished an excellent 2nd, after leading for most of the race. Mark had got them off to a flying start on leg 1, with what turned out to be the 2nd fastest individual time of the day. We also had a strong 'B' team of Stewart Knowles, Adam Peers, Darren Hewitt & Steve Lowe who finished 10th, and a 'C' team of Chris Rippon, Robert Brailsford, Daniel Benjamin & Thomas Sellers who were 16th team. In the Senior Women's race four teams were in medal contention, including the Wakefield team of Suzanne Brooke, Helen Beck, Rebecca Sheppard & Nicola Steel, but in the end they had to settle for 4th place, a fine result. Download Ladies results in pdf.
In the road races for the younger age groups, Libby Cree & Rosie Thistlewood had an excellent 1-2 in the U13 Girl's race, and Jessica Watson was 2nd in the U15 Girl's race. Download race results in pdf.

9th Apr 2022. Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting.
Although we didn't have a huge turnout of athletes for the Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting, it was great to be able to resume track and field athletics at Thornes Park Stadium after a two year absence.
In spite of the cold conditions, there were some excellent performances achieved by members of the Harriers, particularly by Joshua Akintolu, who leaped a Grade 2 level 4.66m in the U13B LJ. Grade 3 performances were also achieved by Rachel Crorken (SW 200m 25.69s), Amy Hunt (U20W LJ 5.23m), Liam Greaves (U20M 100m 11.18s) & Daniel Akintolu (U15B LJ 5.33m).
We also had a good turnout of Junior Jets, with some of them enjoying their first proper athletics competition. Lily Keeler had a very successful day, winning the U11G 75m with 11.74s, LJ with 3.65m & Shot with 5.95m. Top performer amongst the U11 boys was Sydney Swan, winning the LJ with 3.26m.
Many thanks to all the officials and helpers for all their hard work in making the meeting a success.

4th Apr 2022. Wakefield Harriers March Athletes of the Month - Mark Bostock & Angie Dales.


This month the Committee decided that there were two athletes deserving the Athlete of the Month accolade for March.
For winning the Wakefield Hospice 10k in such a dominant manner, and for setting a new road 5Km Club Record, Mark Bostock is one of our Athletes of the Month.
For winning the F50 title at the Yorkshire Veterans' Athletic Association Cross Country Championships, and for setting a New F50 10k Club Record, Angie Dales has also been voted our Athlete of the Month for March.
Well done to both Mark & Angie!

3rd Apr 2022. Northern Mens & Womens League Fixtures for 2022.
For the 2022 season the Wakefield Harriers senior track and field team are competing in the East Premier Division of the Northern Mens & Womens League. The teams we're up against are City of Sheffield & Dearne AC, City of York AC, Holmfirth Harriers & AC, Leeds City AC & Rotherham Harriers & AC.
Here are the fixtures :- Sat 30 April - University of York Sports Centre, Sun 12 June - Herringthorpe Stadium Rotherham, Sun 10 July - Thornes Park Wakefield, Sat 6 August - Sheffield

3rd Apr 2022. Another New M50 Club Marathon Record for Darren Hewitt.
Darren Hewitt ran another PB and a new M50 Marathon Club Record of 2 hrs 52:13 at the Manchester Marathon. This beat the previous record he set last year in the same race by 41 seconds.
There were other fine performances from the Harriers, with new recruit Andrew Teasdale running an impressive 2 hrs 53:36 in his first marathon, Mark Mills recording 2 hrs 56:12, James Coulman 2 hrs 58:12, and Glenn Shelley just missing the 3 hrs barrier by a tantalising 6 seconds. Results Link.

2nd Apr 2022. Another New Road 5Km Club Record for Mark Bostock.
Mark Bostock competed in the latest Podium 5k 'race series at Barrowford in Lancashire, and finished 8th in the 'A' race. His time set a New Road 5Km Club Record of 14 mins 26 secs, beating his previous record set last month by 6 seconds. Results Link.

1st Apr 2022. Club Membership Renewal Now Due for 2022/23 Season.
The Club Membership renewal is now due for the 2022/23 season. All club members should be sent an email from England Athletics to renew your club membership, which includes the EA Registration. Please do this as soon as possible, to ensure you are eligible to compete in club team events.
