2022 Club News January - March

21st Mar 2022. Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League Race 1.
The Wakefield Hospice 10k was the first race in the relaunched Wakefield Harriers Senior Runners Distance League, and the club had 25 runners competing. The outstanding run from race winner Mark Bostock puts him top of the league, followed by our excellent veteran ladies Nicola Steel, Angela Dales and Helen Beck.

20th Mar 2022. Mark Bostock Has Dominant Win in 25th Wakefield Hospice 10k.


It was the 25th running of the Wakefield Hospice 10k, and Wakefield Harriers had their first outright winner of the event. Mark Bostock continued his rich vein of form with a dominant display of individual running, to run out a clear winner in 31:16.
The race incorporated the Wakefield Harriers 10k Road Championships, and Mark also won the accolade of Club 10k Road Champion for the first time. He was followed home in the men's race by Darren Hewitt and Glen Shelley. Helen Beck finished 5th lady in the race in 38:58, and 1st in the F40 category, and she became the Ladies Club Champion for the third time. Nicola Steel was 2nd Harrier home and 1st in the F45 category, and with Rebecca Sheppard finishing 3rd, running in her first 10k race, Wakefield Harriers won the ladies team prize.
Mark & Helen are pictured receiving their trophies from the first Hospice 10k winner Mark Ridgway, and the first race organiser Maggie Still. Maggie was one of the Wakefield Harriers star ladies team members back in the 1990s, and after more than 25 years still holds the club records at 400m Hurdles and Triple Jump.
Another stand out performance came from Angie Dales, who won the F50 category and ran a New F50 10k Club Record of 42 mins 17 secs, beating the previous record set way back in 1993 by Dot Hand. Results Link.

19th Mar 2022. Five Harriers Compete in English Schools Cross Country Championships.
There were five Harriers competing for their schools' county associations at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, which took place near Tonbridge in Kent.
In the Senior Girls race Suzie Brooke finished 96th and 5th scorer for the West Yorkshire Schools team, whilst Holly Walker was 137th and 5th scorer for the North Yorkshire Schools team. Euan Gaskin was the 2nd finisher for West Yorkshire and 124th in the Intermediate Boys race. In the Junior Girls race we had 2 runners from the club competing. For North Yorkshire Schools Rosie Thistlewood was their 2nd counter in 123rd, and for West Yorkshire Schools Jessica Watson was their 5th counter in 245th place. Link to results of all races.

18th Mar 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc 15th in World Indoor T&F Championships.
After winning the UK indoor 3000m title, Amy-Eloise Markovc was selected to compete for the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team in that event at the World Indoor Track & Field Championships, which was held at Belgrade, in Serbia. She finished an excellent 15th overall, and 3rd European runner, in a time of 8 mins 53.57 secs. Congratulations to Amy-Eloise on her latest international selection, and another outstanding performance. Results Link.

12th Mar 2022. New Road 5Km Club Record for Mark Bostock.
Mark Bostock competed in the Podium 5k 'A' Race at Barrowford in Lancashire, and finished 16th in the race. His time set a New Road 5Km Club Record of 14 mins 32 secs, beating the previous record set in 1992 by Darren Spawforth. Results Link.

12th Mar 2022. Yorkshire Veterans' Athletic Association Cross Country Championships.



There was a great result from the Wakefield Harriers Over 45 Ladies team, with Julie Briscoe, Nicky Steel & Angie Dales coming 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the Yorkshire Veterans AA Cross Country Championships. This was Angie's first race in the F50 category, and she won the F50 title.

12th Mar 2022. Four Harriers Compete in Inter County Cross Country Championships.
There were four Wakefield Harriers selected to run for Yorkshire in the CAI Inter County Cross Country Championships at Loughborough. In the U20 Ladies race Suzanne Brooke had an excellent run to finish 40th and 6th finisher for Yorkshire, helping the county to finish 2nd team. In the U13 Girls race the Yorkshire team finished 7th, with our 3 runners Rosie Thistlewood, Evie Tunney & Libby Cree finishing 111th, 212nd & 300th respectively. It was a very good run from Rosie, considering she ran with one shoe, after losing it in the mud 400m into the race. And it was a brave run from Libby, to complete the course after an heavy fall 500 metres in.

7th Mar 2022. Wakefield Harriers February Athlete of the Month - Rosie Thistlewood.



For being selected to compete for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships, and for North Yorkshire Schools in the English Schools Cross Country Championships, Rosie Thistlewood has been voted our Athlete of the Month for February. Well done Rosie!

5th/6th Mar 2022. Three Medals at British Masters Indoor T&F Championship.
Three of Wakefield's masters athletes competed at the British Masters Indoor T&F Championships at Lee Valley, and they all came away with a medal.
Amanda Potter won a bronze medal in the F35 200m, and was just out of the medals in the 60m, finishing 4th. Stephen Thorpe & Richard Higson-Blythe won silver and bronze medals in the M45 200m, but positions were reversed in the 60m, as they finished 4th & 5th respectively. Results Link.

5th/6th Mar 2022. Roundup of the Weekend's Leading Distance Runners Results.
Danny Franks ran a fine new PB of 31:40 in the high quality Trafford 10k at Partington, a time which moves him up to 12th in the club all-time list. Results Link.
Three Harriers finished inside 78 minutes at the Retford Half Marathon. Results Link.

27th Feb 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc Wins UK Indoor 3000m Title.



As the reigning European Indoor Champion, and the fastest runner in the field, Amy-Eloise Markovc was the favourite to win the 3000m at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships at Birmingham. She won the race comfortably in a time of 9m 04.26s, and as she had already set the qualifying time in the USA for the forthcoming World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, she booked her place in the Great Britain & NI team. Our congratulations to Amy-Eloise.
Leonie Ashmeade was also competing in the championships, and did well to reach the semi-final of the 60m, running 7.57s. Results Link.

26th Feb 2022. English National Cross Country Championships.
The club had just two runners competing at the Saucony English National Cross Country Championships, at Parliament Hill Fields in North London.
Northern Cross Country Champion Abbey Brooke had another outstanding run to finish 12th in the U20 Ladies race, and youger sister Suzie Brooke also did very well to finish 67th in the same race. Results Link.

18th-20th Feb 2022. British University Indoor T&F Championships.
Three members of Wakefield Harriers competed for their university or college teams at the British University Indoor Track & Field Championships at Sheffield.
Leonie Ashmeade finished 7th in the 60m final in 7.56s, after winning her heat in 7.64s, and recording a PB of 7.45s in the semi-final, very close to Emily Freeman's club record of 7.42s. Mark Bostock came 5th in the 3000m final in 8m 44.45s after running 8m 33.07s in the heats, and Idris Bevan finished 8th in the Pole Vault, clearing a PB of 4.30m. Results Link.

20th Feb 2022. Great Times from Harriers Competing in Seville Marathon.



A group of harriers escaped from the storms raging in the UK to run in the sunshine in the Seville Marathon in Spain. They recorded some great times, with Ben Butler running 2 hrs 35:04, Chris Hunter a PB of 2 hrs 39:54, Simon Midwood 2 hrs 42:17, Chris Snowball a PB of 2 hrs 50:47, Chris Ward 2 hrs 58:00, and new member James Coulman 3 hrs 07:34. 19th Feb 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc Runs World Indoor Championship Qualifying Time.
Amy-Eloise Markovc made a trip over from the USA to compete in the 1500m at the televised Müller Indoor Grand Prix at Birmingham. She finished 4th, and 1st British runner home, in a top quality international field, in a new outright PB time of 4 mins 08.68 secs. Her time was even faster than her outdoor PB, and is a qualifying time for the forthcoming World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Results Link.

13th Feb 2022. New F45 Half Marathon Club Record for Julie Briscoe.



Julie Briscoe had her first Half Marathon race in the F45 category, and ran out a clear winner in the ladies section in the tough Liversedge Half Marathon. She finished 6th overall in the race, just behind Mark Mills, and set a new F45 Club Record of 82 mins 23 secs, beating the previous record set last year by Nicky Steel. Results Link.

9th Feb 2022. Six Harriers Selected for English Schools Cross Country Championships.
Several Harriers competed for their local schools athletics organisations at the West Yorkshire Schools' Cross Country Championships, held at Leeds on 5th February. In the Junior Girls race Libby Cree came 3rd, Jessica Watson 5th & Evie Tunney 11th, and in the Inter Boys event Euan Gaskin was 5th and Zachary Rayner 19th. In the Senior races, Elliot Prentice & Sam Langley were 9th & 14th respectively in the Boys race, and Suzie Brooke 6th in the Girls race. Results Link.
There were also two Harriers competing at the North Yorkshire Schools' Cross Country Championships, held at Catterick on 15th January. In the Junior Girls race Rosie Thistlewood finished 3rd, and in the Inter Girls race Holly Walker was 6th.
Rosie, Holly, Euan, Libby, Jessica and Suzie have all qualified to compete for their counties in the English Schools Cross Country Championships, to be held on 19th March at Hop Farm, Paddock Wood, Kent. Our congratulations to them all.

7th Feb 2022. Wakefield Harriers January Athlete of the Month - Abbey Brooke.



For winning the U20 title at the North of England Cross Country Championships at Pontefract, Abbey Brooke has been voted our Athlete of the Month for January. Well done Abbey!

6th Feb 2022. New Club 3000m Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc finished 5th in a top class field in the 3000m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at Staten Island, New York. She ran a superb New Club 3000m Record of 8 mins 44.15 secs, eclipsing her previous best she recorded last year when winning the European Indoor Championships. This time places her 9th on the UK Women's 3000m Indoor All Time List, and is also a qualifying time for the forthcoming World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

6th Feb 2022. Northern Athletics U15/U13 Indoor T&F Championships.
Several Harriers competed at the Northern Athletics U15/U13 Indoor Track & Field Championships at Sheffield. Results Link.

6th Feb 2022. Great Times Recorded at Dewsbury 10Km Road Race.
Despite the blustery conditions there were some great times recorded by the Harriers at the Dewsbury 10Km Road Race. The club had 4 men inside 33 minutes, to easily win the team prize, and 8 men inside 35 minutes, which hasn't happened for many years. Mark Bostock finished 2nd in 31:21, and he was well supported by Matthew O'Connor 7th in 32:21, Daniel Franks 9th in 32:26 & Ben Butler 12th in 32:33, and Chris Hunter was 1st in the M45 category, with a fine new PB of 33:56.
Helen Beck was our first lady home in 39:06, and we also had a New Club F60 Record of 53:51 from Diane Simmons, so congratulations to her. Results Link.

5th Feb 2022. West Yorkshire & North Yorkshire Schools' Cross Country Championships.
Several Harriers competed for their local schools athletics organisations at the West Yorkshire Schools' Cross Country Championships at Leeds. Results Link.

2nd Feb 2022. Amy-Eloise Markovc on good form in the USA.
Wakefield's US based international Amy-Eloise Markovc has had a good start to her 2022 campaign.
At the UW Indoor Preview Meeting at Seattle in Washington state she won the Mile in a new indoor PB time of 4 mins 30.78 secs. Only seven other British women have ever run faster indoors.
At the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Meeting at New York she finished 4th in the 3000m in 8 mins 49.49 secs, not far off her PB she set when winning the European Indoor Championships last year.

29th Jan 2022. Abbey Brooke Wins the North of England U20 Cross Country Title.



There were very strong winds during the Start Fitness North of England Cross Country Championships at Pontefract Park, which made it difficult to run on parts of the exposed course. But that didn't deter Abbey Brooke, who had the biggest win of her running career as she won the U20 Women's race. Younger sister Suzie also did well as she finished in a very creditable 20th place.
The club also had good results in the U13 Girl's race, with Libby Cree 10th, Rosie Thistlewood 13th & Evie Tunney 15th, but with 4 to score they couldn't complete a team. Wakefield did have complete teams in the senior races, with Nicola Steel 76th, Angela Dales 99th, Joanne Biltcliffe 181st & Georgina Yoh 202nd finishing 22nd team in the Ladies race. The club had 9 runners in the Senior Men's race, the 6 scorers being Steve Lowe 159th, Ashley Crow 186th, Stewart Knowles 236th, Liam O'Flaherty 279th, Thomas Sellers 295th & Philip Ambler 412th, with the team finishing 25th.
In the other age group we had good individual runs from Ben Shackleton 24th U15B, Jessica Watson 81st U15G, Elliot Prentice 60th U17M, Zachary Rayner 71st U17M, and Holly Walker 49th U17W.

15th/16th Jan 2022. Two Golds at Senior & U17 Northern Indoor T&F Championships.
There were some excellent performances at the Senior & U17 Northern Indoor T&F Championships at the EIS in Sheffield, with four medals won, including two gold.
Mark Bostock won two of those medals, easily winning the 3000m in 8m 28.37s, after coming 3rd in the 1500m in 4m 04.13s. Leonie Ashmeade won the SW 60m title in 7.58s, after running 7.57s in the semi-final, and Amy Hunt won a bronze medal in the U20 LJ with a leap of 5.30m. Results Link.

16th Jan 2022. Another New M45 Half Marathon Club Record for Chris Hunter.
Chris Hunter ran a new PB and another New M45 Half Marathon Club Record of 1 hr 13 mins 58 secs, in the York Knavesmire Harriers Brass Monkey Half Marathon, beating his previous record, set a few months ago, by over a minute.
Peter Gooding, who holds the Half Marathon Club Records for age groups M50, M55 & M60, just failed by 8 seconds to beat Brian Fozard's M70 record with his time of 1 hr 40 mins 21 secs. Brian set the bar high, and holds the records for the M65, M70 & M75 age groups.
There were also fine runs from other Harriers taking part. Ben Butler was not far from his best with 1 hr 11 mins 50 secs, and Simon Midwood ran the same time as Chris Hunter. Former Yorkshire 800m & 1500m Champion Steve Lowe, now with a new lease of life in the M45 category, ran 1 hr 15 mins 31 secs. Results Link.

15th Jan 2022. Four Harriers Selected for Yorkshire Cross Country Team.
Following their fine runs in the Yorkshire County Cross Country Championships, four Wakefield Harriers have been selected to compete for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships, to be held on Saturday 12th March at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.
Congratulations to Suzanne Brook (U20 Ladies), and to Rosie Thistlewood, Libby Cree & Evie Tunney (all U13 Girls).

10th Jan 2022. Wakefield Harriers December Athletes of the Month - Chris Hunter & Evie Tunney.


This month the Committee decided that there were two athletes deserving the Athlete of the Month accolade for December.
For winning the M45 title in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, and for setting a new M45 Half Marathon Club Record a few weeks ago, Chris Hunter is one of our Athletes of the Month.
For her big improvement throughout the cross country season, and helping the U13 Girls team to numerous medals, Evie Tunney has also been voted our Athlete of the Month for December.
Well done to both Chris & Evie!

8th Jan 2022. Yorkshire County Cross Country Championships.



The Yorkshire County Cross Country Championships took place on a very wet course at Kiveton Park, south of Sheffield. The U13 Girls team once again performed with distinction, with Rosie Thistlewood 5th, Libby Cree 6th & Evie Tunney 7th packing well to finish 2nd behind a very strong Rotherham team. They should all have secure selection for the Yorkshire team for the Inter-Counties Championships, as should Suzanne Brook, who finished a fine 8th in the U20 Women's race.
Otherwise, there was a disappointing turnout of runners from the club, with no other age groups completing a team. However there were fine runs on a tough course from the following :- Senior Ladies : Nicky Steel 34th, Charlotte Knowles 38th & Angela Dales 61st ; Senior Men : Steve Lowe 67th, Liam O'Flaherty 104th, Ashley Crowe 147th & Richard Brooke 194th ; U17 Ladies : Holly Walker 12th ; U17 Men : Elliot Prentice 21st & Euan Gaskin 23rd ; U15 Girls : Jessica Watson 28th.
