2021 Club News July - September

26th Sep 2021. New Ladies 10K Club Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Taking part in her first ever 10K road race, Amy-Eloise Markovc finished 5th in the televised Great Manchester Run 10K in a time of 32 mins 35 secs. This is a new Ladies 10K Club Record, breaking Penny Thackray's previous record of 33 mins 06 secs, that had stood for 20 years.

23rd Sep 2021. Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting.
The Wakefield Harriers Annual General Meeting is on Monday 4th October, starting at 7 pm prompt at Thornes Park Stadium.
This is your chance to have your say about the running of the club, and to choose the Committee members for the next 12 months. The club really does need some additional people to come forward, to help with the organisation of the club, and the events it puts on. All nominations for Committee positions should be handed in at the cabin before the meeting. The AGM is open to all Club Members.

19th Sep 2021. New F45 Half Marathon Club Record for Nicky Steel.
Just a day after her 45th birthday, Nicky Steel ran a new PB and a new F45 Half Marathon Club Record of 86 mins 42 secs, at the ESSAR Chester Half Marathon. This beat the previous record, held by Julie Greenwood since 2018, by over 5 minutes. Results Link.



The previous week she gained masters representative honours, running for an England Masters team in an off-road half marathon at Richmond.

18th Sep 2021. Northern Athletics Autumn Road Relay Championships.
The club had several teams competing at the Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships at Redcar, with two of the girls team doing exceptionally well, and coming home with bronze medals. The U17 Women's team of Millie Wroe, Paige Watson & Holly Walker won bronze medals in their race, and the U13 Girl's team of Libby Cree, Evielynne Tunney & Rosie Thistlewood finished in 4th place, but were 3rd club home, and so were also awarded bronze medals. Both teams were the 2nd Yorkshire club to finish in their events.
The Senior Men's 'A' team of Daniel Franks, Simon Midwood, Callum Gaunt, Chris Snowball, Ben Butler & Stewart Knowles did well to finish 24th team (and 6th Yorkshire club), and so qualified for the England Road Relay Championships. The 'B' team of Glenn Shelley, Robert Brailsford, Dominic Garnham, Thomas Sellers, Steve Lowe & Chris Ward were also well up in 51st place. The U17 Men's team of Zachary Rayner, Elliot Prentice & Euan Gaskin were 11th.

12th Sep 2021. New M45 Half Marathon Club Record for Chris Hunter.
The improving Chris Hunter ran a new PB and a New M45 Half Marathon Club Record of 75 mins 07 secs, when finishing 11th overall at the Vale of York Half Marathon, run from Sherburn in Elmet. This beat the previous record, held by Jim Harwood since 1987, by over a minute. Results Link.

12th Sep 2021. West Yorkshire Track & Field League Meeting 7.
There was no West Yorkshire Track & Field League Championship this year, the date being used instead for an additional league meeting, replacing the cancelled first meeting.

In the final standings Wakefield Harriers finished 2nd overall behind Halifax Harriers.

In the individual competitions Alexander Bostwick won the M17 league title, and Joe Potter finished 2nd amongst the U11 Boys. Link to Boys Totals.
In the Girls competitions Paige Watson and Amber Barraclough finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the F17 category. Link to Girls Totals.

11th Sep 2021. Club President John Matthews Passes Away.



Wakefield Harriers are very sorry to announce the really sad news of the passing of John Matthews. He was a truly outstanding High Jump Coach, a wonderful man, and we were very proud to have him as our Club President. John inspired hundreds of young athletes over the years, and was widely liked and respected. He will be missed by all who knew him. RIP John.

4th Sep 2021. West Yorkshire Cross Country League Fixtures.
The fixtures for the 2021 West Yorkshire Cross Country League are as follows :-
Race 1: Sunday 3rd October @ Cleckheaton,
Race 2: Saturday 30th Oct @ Nunroyd Park Leeds,
Race 3: Sunday 21st November @ Thornes Park Wakefield,
Race 4: Sunday 12th December @ Show Ground Harrogate.

28th Aug 2021. New Road Mile Club Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Amy-Eloise Markovc ran a New Women's 1 Mile Road Club Record of 4 mins 24 secs, when finishing 4th in the Downtown Mile at Yakima, Washington State, USA. This beat the previous record of 4 mins 27 secs set by Charlene Thomas in 2013 in New York.

21st/22nd Aug 2021. Yorkshire County T & F Championships at York.
The Yorkshire County Track & Field Championships took place at York University Athletics Stadium, and there were many successes from members of the club. In total Harriers won 22 medals won, 4 of them gold.
Our 4 Yorkshire Champions were :- Lucy Holmes (SW SP), Gabrielle Dyson (SW PV), Suzanne Brooke (U20W 1500m) & James Simms (U20M TJ).
In addition, Silver medals were won by :- Jennifer Ibbitson (SW PV), Chris Harris (SM LJ), Joe Flitcroft (SM HT), Suzanne Brooke (U20W 3000m), James Simms (U20M SP), Paige Watson (U17W 3000m), Ellie Fedzin (U17W HJ), Amy Hunt (U17W LJ), Alexander Bostwick (U17M SP), Ella Bickerdyke (U15G 100m & 200m), Regan Mawson (U15B 100m) & Libby Cree (U13G 800m).
Bronze medals were won by :- Fraser Stewart-McCarrison (U20M 100m), James Simms (U20M HJ), Zachary Rayner (U17M 400m), Paige Watson (U17W 800m), Cole McAndrew (U15B 300m & 800m) & Kian Slatter (U15B SP).

20th Aug 2021. More Club Records for Amy-Eloise Markovc.


Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc was invited to compete at the Prefontaine Classic Meeting at Eugene, Oregon, in the USA. In a very high quality 2 Mile race she finished a fine 5th in a New Club 2 Mile Record of 9 mins 21.98 secs, beating her previous record she set indoors earlier in the year. Amongst British athletes only Paula Ratcliffe has ever run faster.
En route she also set a New Outdoor Club 3000m Record of 8 mins 47.67 secs, which is just over a second slower than the time she recorded when winning the European Indoor 3000m title. Results Link.

18th Aug 2021. Another England Vest for Lucy Robinson.
Lucy Robinson gained her second England vest in a week, when running for an England team in the Manchester International Meeting at Sportcity. In what was her last track race of a very successful season, she won the women's 1500m in 4m 21.99s. Results Link.

15th Aug 2021. First England Vest for Lucy Robinson.
Lucy Robinson gained her first international vest, when running for an England team in the Inter-Area Road Relays, a new event organised by Northern Athletics at the Leeds Triathlon Centre. Running the third leg, and recording the 4th fastest time of the day, Lucy helped the England team to a clear victory.
Mark Bostock also competed, running for the Combined Universities team that finished 4th in the Men's race.

14th/15th Aug 2021. Northern Athletics U17/U15/U13 Championships.
At the Northern Athletics U17/U15/U13 Championships at Hull there were several Harriers competing. Our only medallist this year was Ellie Fedzin, 3rd in the U17 HJ with 1.60m. Results Link.

6th Aug 2021. New Track Mile Club Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.
Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc ran a New Women's 1 Mile Club Record of 4 mins 27.13 secs, when finishing 4th in the Sir Walter Miler event at Raleigh in North Carolina, USA. This beat the previous record of 4m 27.95s set by Charlene Thomas in 2007 in Brussels.

2nd Aug 2021. Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month - Lucy Robinson.



For becoming England Athletics 1500m Champion, Lucy Robinson has been chosen as the Wakefield Harriers Athlete of the Month. Well done Lucy!

1st Aug 2021. North of England Track & Field League Match 4.
The combined men's and women's team did well to finish 4th in the fourth and final match in the "East Premier" division of the North of England Track & Field League at York. Download Results in PDF.
Match Result :- City of York AC 388, City of Sheffield & Dearne AC 385, Rotherham Harriers & AC 354.5, Wakefield District Harriers & AC 349, Leeds City AC 206.5, Holmfirth Harriers & AC 182.
The club finished 4th overall in the division, and it's a credit to all those who took part and supported the club.
Final League Positions :- City of York AC 20 (1464), Rotherham Harriers & AC 20 (1453), City of Sheffield & Dearne AC 16 (1343), Wakefield District Harriers & AC 14 (1330), Leeds City AC 7 (946), Holmfirth Harriers & AC 7 (882).

30th Jul 2021. Amy-Eloise Markovc Excels in Tokyo Olympic Games.


Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc put in an excellent performance for Team GB in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She was the fastest of the three British competitors in the heats, as she finished 9th in her heat in a New Women's Club 5000m Record of 15 mins 03.22 secs. Results Link.
Her superb time places her 13th in the UK 5000m all-time list. Congratulations Amy on your fantastic achievement!

23rd Jul 2021. Wakefield Harriers Distance League Update.
Ben Butler was a clear winner of the St. Aidan's 10k Trail Race, ahead of Chris Snowball, and as a result moves into 2nd place in the Wakefield Harriers Distance League, behind Simon Midwood.
The leading positions in the league, with 4 events left, are Simon Midwood 5525 points (7 events), Ben Butler 5065 points (6 events) and Helen Beck 3918 points (5 events). Download League Championship Scores in XL.

17th/18th Jul 2021. Two Medals at England Athletics Senior T&F Championships.


England Athletics 1500m Champion Lucy Robinson

At the England Athletics Senior T&F Championships at Bedford there were some outstanding performances from club members, with two medals being won.
Lucy Robinson confirmed her step up to the highest level in the senior ranks with victory in the 1500m in 4m 18.75s, well clear of the rest of the field. Leonie Ashmeade also had a great result, winning the silver medal in the 100m in a season's best of 11.73s. Rachel Crorken also did well and ran a season's best of 56.50s in her heat of the 400m. 9th-11th Jul 2021. New Balance English Schools Championships.
Two members of the club were selected to compete for West Yorkshire Schools at the New Balance English Schools Championships at Sportcity, and did very well.
Ellie Fedzin finished 5th= in the Intermediate Girls High Jump with 1.57m, and Alfie Edwards was 6th in the Senior Boys Long Jump with 6.59m. Results Link.

4th Jul 2021. North of England Track & Field League Match 3.
The combined men's and women's team did well to finish 3rd in the third match in the "East Premier" division of the North of England Track & Field League at York. With one match remaining, the club lie in 3rd place, behind Rotherham and York. Download Results in PDF.
