2021 Club News January - March

21st Mar 2021. Club Nights to Resume on Tuesday 30th March.
Club nights are to resume on Tuesday 30th March, with some restrictions in place.
Due to reduced opening hours, please note the following :-
JUNIOR JETS will start at 17:45 - 18:45. There will be 15 minutes time gap for cleaning etc before the next session, which will start at 19:00. All members need to be off site for the stadium to close at 20:30.
The same safety measures will be in place as before lockdown. We must ask that there are no spectators but athletes under 18 do require an adult to be present (1 per family unit).
We would also like volunteers to help out with coaching and registering & taking training fees. The club is happy to fund anyone who shows a dedicated interest in initially being an assistant coach, as due to group size restrictions, we will need more volunteers to oversee the extra groups.
If road runners want to meet up to run in groups of 6, then please meet in the car park, away from the stadium.
We look forward to seeing you all again.

17th Mar 2021. Latest Council Proposals for Thornes Park Athletics Stadium.
Wakefield Council have decided that the location of the proposed new 3G pitch at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium is to be moved, after concerns raised by Wakefield Harriers, and other athletics users of the stadium. Having such a pitch in the middle of the track would have meant no long throwing events, and so no athletics league fixtures for the club. So this is a welcome decision by the Council.
More detailed designs for the stadium will now be drawn up, and put forward for scrutiny later this year.

5th Mar 2021. Amy-Eloise Markovc Becomes European Indoor 3000m Champion.

Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc (formerly Neale) became the first athlete in the history of Wakefield Harriers to win a European Title. She won the 3000m title in a New Club 3000m Record of 8 mins 46.43 secs, just holding off France’s Alice Finot and Britain's Verity Ockenden in a close race. After a steady start, she worked her way through the field in the later stages, before hitting the front in the last couple of laps.
Congratulations from all at the club to Amy-Eloise on becoming European Indoor 3000m Champion.
Report from British Athletics.

3rd Mar 2021. West Yorkshire T & F League Dates Announced.
The dates for the 2021 West Yorkshire T & F League have been announced. The league is optimistic that it will be able to take place this year, although the first meeting may not be possible. For a list of the provisional fixtures, and to download an entry form follow the link to WYL 2021 page.

22nd Feb 2021. Amy-Eloise Markovc Selected for European Indoor Championships.

On the strength of her excellent performance last week in New York, Amy-Eloise Markovc has been selected to compete for Great Britain in the 3000m at the European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, on March 4-7. The club congratulates her on her latest international selection. Report from AW.

13th Feb 2021. A British Record for Amy-Eloise Markovc.

Our USA based club member Amy-Eloise Markovc (formerly Neale) became the first athlete in the history of Wakefield Harriers to hold a senior British Record. She was invited to compete in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in New York, USA, which was part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour, and televised over the weekend.
She finished 7th in the 2 Mile race in a New British Record of 9 mins 30.69 secs. It is admittedly a rarely run distance, but it is still a great achievement, and our congratulations to Amy-Eloise!
En route she ran a New 3000m Club Record of 8 mins 54.11, beating her previous record from 2019. This 3000m performance is a qualifying time for the forthcoming European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, on March 4-7

4th Jan 2021. Club Training Nights Suspended Until Further Notice
The latest government restrictions, introduced in an attempt to slow the spread of Covid-19, means that the club is currently not allowed to meet. So regrettably club training nights have been suspended until further notice.
