30th Sep 2019. September Athlete of the Month - Jean Jackson
Jean Jackson, though not an athlete, was crowned Yorkshire Official of the Year. For this we feel special recognition is due.
29th Sep 2019. Cusworth 10k, Doncaster
Nicky Steel has won 1st lady at the Cusworth 10k, which also incorporated the South Yorkshire 10k championships,
finishing in a fine 39.23.

Matt Cunningham finished the Pontefract Half Marathon in 1hr 35 mins, knocking an impressive 7 minutes off his half marathon pb.
This follows an impressive pb at Sheffield 10k last week, a positive sign that his training for the Yorkshire marathon is going well.

8th Sep 2019. New Records at West Yorkshire T & F League Championships
At the West Yorkshire Track & Field League Championships at Cleckheaton Libby Cree had a brilliant day, breaking
not one, but two club records!
She ran a New U11 Girls 600m Record of 1 min 46.12 secs,
and also jumped a New U11 Girls Long Jump Record of 4.31m, so is clearly a very talented all-round athlete.
Her 600m performance was also a New West Yorkshire Track & Field League Championships Record.
There were also U15G Grade 1 HJ clearances of 1.60m from both Chloe Kaye & Ellie Fedzin, and another Grade 1 performance
from Eleanor Rayner in the U15G 200m, with her time of 26.14s.

1st Sep 2019. Wakefield Harriers Win Leeds Country Way Relay.
The Wakefield Harriers Men's team won the Leeds Country Way Relay, a 6-stage long distance off-road relay, where each leg of the relay is run as a pair,
and with the legs ranging from 9.4 miles to 11.7 miles.
The winning men's team was made up of Leg 1: Ben Butler & Danny Franks, Leg 2: Adam Peers & Paul Marchant, Leg 3: Craig Davidson & Chris Hunter,
Leg 4: Ben Khan & Simon Midwood, Leg 5: Chris Ward & Ross Penny, Leg 6: Matty Hill & Mark Bostock. On all but the 5th leg Wakefield Harriers took the
prize for the fastest leg.
The mixed team of Jenny Buck & Ian Richardson, Nicky Steel & Liam O’Flaherty, Helen Beck & Shaun Mollart,
Alex Potter & Martin Holding, Hayley Newbound & Craig Orr, Joanne Bilcliffe & Daz Hewitt also did very well to finish 4th mixed team, and 14th overall.
On the 2nd and 3rd legs Wakefield Harriers took the prize for the fastest mixed team leg.
We also had an 3rd 'Open' team who also did well to finish 27th out of the 60 competing teams.

1st Sep 2019. World 50km Trail Champs, Brasov, Romania
Julie Briscoe represented Great Britain in the 50k World Championships in Romania.
Julie was in 9th position (3:22:57) and the 3rd scoring to the GB team, winning gold, behind team mates Aly Dixon and Helen Davies.

31st Aug 2019. August Athlete of the Month - Amy Hunt
Amy Hunt has had a fantastic month, she set a new club pentathlon Record at the York young athletes meeting
beating the old one which had stood for 10 years.
At the Northern championship in Liverpool Amy won a gold medal in pole vault setting another club record
beating her own which she set last year with a fantastic vault of 3.45.
As well as winning the West Yorkshire Track and field league and the York summer league Amy finished her
great month with a silver medal at the England championship in Bedford.

We had a good turnout at the YVAA Road Relays at York on Sunday.
The ladies V35 took 1st place (Helen beck, Julie Briscoe and Nicky Steele) with our V35 B team coming 7th.
Our men’s O40 team of Chris Hunter, Joe Schofield and Liam O’Flaherty were 6th in their race.
Our men’s over 50 team of Phil Ambler, Mark Whitehouse and Ian Shipley were 8th in their race.

17/18th Aug 2019. Northern Athletics U13/U15/U17 Championships
At the Northern Athletics U13/U15/U17 Championships at Liverpool there were some fine performances from the club's pole vaulters.
The highlight was a New U15 Girls Pole Vault Club Record of 3.45m from Amy Hunt, beating her own record she's set last year.
This outstanding leap places her 3rd equal in the
UK 2019 U15G Pole Vault Rankings.
There was further success from the pole vaulters as Alfie Edwards won the U17M event with 3.55m,
Alexander Bostwick won silver in the U17B event with 2.85m,
and Erin Hunt won silver in the U15G event with 2.70m.

At the Open meeting at York, the club had a number of athletes in action.
U15G Amy Hunt was in outstanding form, beating the Club U15G Pentathlon Record which had stood for 10 years, scoring an
impressive 2813 points to rank her 18th Nationally as she prepares for the English Schools mulit events.
In the U/15B pentathlon Alexander Bostwick demonstrated his versatility, claiming first in the pentathlon, and younger
brother Oliver had his first experience of multi events to finish 5th in the U/13B pentathlon.
From our distance runners we had the up and coming Watson sisters performing well. Paige Watson U15G 800m, 3rd 2.35.7
and 300m 4th 48.3, and Jessica Watson, U/13G, 800m 3rd 2.40.8 and 200m, 5th 33.3.
There were also fine performances from Ben Smith U/15B 100m 4th 14.8 and from the junior jets it was nice to see two
athletes in action and learning from competitive experiences. Rosie Thistlewood, U/11G, 3rd 150m 23.4 and 1000m 3rd,
3.36.3 and Harry Beard U/11B Javelin, 2nd, 15.03m, Shot putt, 3rd, 7.21m and 690m, 7th, 2.39.5.

Andy Cartwright was proudly wearing his Great Britain Masters kit to compete at the Alexandra stadium in Birmingham on
Saturday and came away with Bronze in the 1500m.
In a great tactical race in blustery conditions the race unfolded with 450m to go and ended up with a big last lap burn
up with 1 second splitting 1st place to 3rd.

There was a huge turnout for the Harriers in the Dewsbury Flat Cap 5, with an array of awards going to Wakefield.
1st place Male (Ben Butler), 3rd place Male (Ben Khan), 1st vet Female 35 (Helen Beck) and 1st Vet Male 40 (Ian Richardson)
all took awards, with the overall 1st place team award going to Wakefield Harriers.

3rd/4th Aug 2019. England Athletics Senior Home Counties International & U15 / U17 Combined Events Championships
Three Wakefield athletes pushed themselves to their limits and worked tenaciously over two days of competition at the England Combined events Championships in Manchester. Alfie Edwards finished 4th in the Northern Championships and 10th overall in the U/17 decathlon gaining a formidable 10 pbs, one in each of his events, finishing with a pb total of 4842 points. Training partner James Simms was hot on his heals with 7 Pb's finishing with a pb culmative total of 4471 points, finishing 6th in the Northern Championships and 12th in the England championships.
In the younger U/15 age group Alexander Bostwick competed in the octathlon finishing 3rd in the Northern Championships and 12th In the England Championships with a pb score of 2603 and three pbs.

There were some good 1500m times and personal Best performances recorded at the Leeds BMC races on the Carnegie track.
For The Wakefield seniors there were Andrew Cartwright (4m 16.87) Danny Franks (4m 04.39) Mark Bostock (1m 55.60)
U20 Mathew Hill won the C race in a seasons best (4m 02.13)
U17s Callum Gaunt (4m 25.67) and Sam Langley (4m 36.52) both ran PBs.
U13 Ben Shackleton made his debut over the distance running (4m 58.08).

For her many achievements this season, Leonie has broken the 60m club record 3 times and ran a PB of 7.59 to win bronze at U20 England indoor championships, ran an outdoor PB of 11.79 winning the northern U20 championships and breaking the club record held since 1999, English schools bronze medalist, winner of U20 outdoor Welsh
Internationals and ended the season with her greatest achievement to date selection for U20 Great Britain team at Manchester internationals. What a season well done Leonie!
28th Jul 2019. West Yorkshire League, Cleckheaton
Cree and Hunt in record breaking form.
At the final West Yorkshire league fixture at Cleckheaton Wakefield harrier Libby Cree U/11G broke the league record for the 600m, smashing the record in a speedy 1.47.46, Amy Hunt U/15G also leapt out to a new record in the longjump with a massive leap of 5.20m (grade 1). Libby also won the 75m in 11.21 and Amy won the 75 hurdles in 12.87 (Grade 4).
Paige Watson was another athlete In winning form finishing 1st U/15G 800m in 2.34.52.
From our male athletes we had U/11B Ellis Cayre 1st in the 75m 11.56 and 1st longjump 3.61m. Ben Shackleton front ran the U/13B 800m looking strong finishing In 2.24.32 (grade 2) and Tristan Wright U/15B 1500m crossed the line in 1st 4.51.44.
In the Senior men 400m, Ben Mitchell ran a gutsy 53.51 to take the win.
From across the overall league we had a number of overall league champions. Amy Hunt U/15G, Alexander Bostwick U/15B and Libby Cree U/11G were overall league champions. In Second place we had Ellie Fedzin U/15G, Courtney Newsome U/13G, Ellis Cayre U/11B and Lucy Holmes SW.
Third overall position went to Ben Shackleton U/13B.

After winning three out of their four fixtures, the Wakefield Harriers young athletes team comprising of U13, U15 and U17's
age groups won the Yorkshire and District athletics premier league and so became champions for the first time.
Well done to the fantastic team display from all athletes, coaches, officials and managers, an outstanding season.
Final positions - 1st Wakefield 683.5, 2nd Cleethorpes 519, 3rd Longwood 498 and 4th Halifax 438.5.

Three Wakefield Harriers Amy Hunt, Erin Hunt and Alfie Edwards were selected to represent Yorkshire at the U15/U17
northern inter counties meeting at Middlesbrough Sports Village.
The athletes helped the Yorkshire team to victory with great performances in Long Jump and Pole Vault.
Amy with a Personal Best leap of 5.20 in the long jump and a 3.20 vault, Erin a 2.70 pole vault and Alfie a 5.95 long jump.

7th Jul 2019. Leeds 10k
Nicky Steel had a strong run at the popular Leeds 10k race on Sunday. In warm and challenging conditions she ran a time of 41.30,
finishing in the top 10 ladies and 2nd place in her age category.

5th Jul 2019. St Aidan's 10k Trail Race
We had 14 runners taking part in the St Aidan's trail 10km race on Friday.
Wakefield Harriers took first and second place in the race, with Ben Butler in 1st place and Benjamin Khan taking 2nd.
In the ladies race Helen Beck was our first female finisher and 4th lady.
