Both critical to our 4*100 alongside Lewis Paley and Ben Mitchell. Ben Mitchell had a great run in the 400 (53.4) flat where him and Harvey Thorpe (55.3) excelled. Harvey being a vital relay component stamping out a 54.00 split. Lewis Paley had a great day with a solid guest 100 (11.9) featuring also in Shot Putt (5m73), Triple Jump (7.64) and the 4*100 team. Huge shout-out to Mark Lindsay for coming and being the Jav pro (44m33) alongside Jordan Guthrie (32m61) who was a high jump great and a hurdle hero as well. My high jump double of Kian Shaw (1m85) and Jord (1m70) ensured a strong combined points total for achievements including conquering the 110m Hurdles (22.3 & 25.1 respectively) for team points. Miles Sizer mr Yorkshire hurdle epic 400mH (56.3) and with a third place for absolute novice Daniel Kesete (70.3) He also learned how to steeplechase moments before the race began, beating injured Tom Coney with a time of 12:45.1 (Coney 12.45.3) over the line in a fine graft around for the team. Our masters athlete Andy Cartwright showing his adaptability in the Discus (19m10 and 1500m 4:24.1). On behalf of all athletes, we’d like to thank officials for their on the day turnout!
*MATCH 1 LADIES REPORT* I just wanted to say a BIG thank you to all athletes, coaches, officials and parents/partners/friends for your support last weekend! Without you, there would be no Senior Team!! From my point of view, I’m gutted I didn’t get chance to see every event that happened as I was either competing or warming up but I kept checking the results when I could! Despite having a depleted team, you were all amazing and should be proud of what we managed to pull together! So you’re all getting a special mention each ???? Hannah Yates: Year after year, Hannah turns up to compete for the team with no hesitation. This time, Hannah had been suffering (and still was) from tonsillitis and was on antibiotics during the competition. However, she still volunteered to fill in for the long jump to gain extra points for the team, even though she was already doing 4 events whilst ill! For this reason, Hannah gets my Ladies’ Athlete of the Match ?? The quote “I’m gonna use my throwing shoe as a marker for my run up so they know I’m not actually a long jumper.” did it for me! ?? Lynsie Whyke: Lynsie is another crucial and reliable athlete who turns up time after time and gives it her all, as well as filling in events that are spare on most occasions. Some great jumping all around from Lynsie this weekend and thank you for filling in with the High Jump! Every point matters! Racheal Larkin: Who volunteers to run the 800m for a warm up?! ?? Top team effort once again. Racheal even ran 1 minute faster than she wanted in the 800m ?? A great run in the 400m individual event for key team points and 2 storming relay legs at the end of the day. Amanda Shaw: 2 big individual wins. A British Champs qualifying time. 2 chasing relay legs that pulled the team back from 3rd to 2nd. What more can I say. Another significant team member that puts WDH&AC first before herself. Olivia Roe: First outing for Olivia as an U17. It can be a daunting competition (as I can remember!) being this young. A great 400m run (PB) as well as just short of her PB in the discus. Olivia was also part of both relays and helped the team to two 2nd places. Suzie Brooke: Another U17 athlete in their first senior match. And another ill athlete ?? But again, showing true Wakefield spirit and not letting the team down, Suzie managed to finish 3rd in the ‘A’ 800m with a new PB - ever closer to that English Schools’ qualifying time! Lucie Hall: Lucie was one of the later additions to the team after texting me only a few days before the match. (Apologies to Lucie as I only managed to speak to her as she was leaving!) but I did manage to catch her race. She turned up, did her job, 3rd in the ‘A’ race and ran a SB. Great points for the team. I’m excited to see what we can do for the next match! C’mon ladies, be part of this fantastic group of people! (We only had 8 athletes this match!) Thank you once again, you legends. Lucy

28nd April 2019. Virgin London Marathon
Three harriers took part in this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon. Toeing the line alongside Eliud Kipchoge, Sir Mo Farrah and over 42,000 other runners were Ben Butler, Simon Midwood and Daz Hewitt. The temperature was pretty much ideal for marathon running although there was a stiff westerly breeze which was sure to make the last 10km tough work along the banks of the Thames. Butler was the first Wakefield runner back in 242nd place in time of 2 hrs 36:24, a massive 14 minute PB. That time puts him 14th on the Wakefield Harriers all time list and our fastest marathoner since 1986. Next to finish was Midwood in a very impressive personal best time of 2 hrs 40:43 (467th place), putting him a very creditable 20th on the club's all time list and qualifying him for an automatic place in next year's London Marathon for the British Athletics Championship race alongside Butler. Incredibly, just 3 weeks after his personal best marathon performance at the Manchester Marathon Daz Hewitt backed up that performance with yet another strong run to finish in 3 hrs 07:14, a mere 37seconds off his best time. This also gives Hewitt an automatic entry for next year’s GFA race. Results Link.
