2017 Club News October - December

31st Dec 2017. Club has 3 Top 30 Ranked Athletes in UK Senior Rankings.
In the UK top 30 rankings the club had just three athletes in the UK top 30 in 2017, all of them women.
Charlene Thomas was 9th in the 1500m (4m 09.32s) & 14th in the 800m (2m 03.12s).
Amy-Eloise Neale was 11th in the 5000m (15m 39.3s), 12th in the 1500m (4m 11.00s) & 26th in the 3000m (9m 17.79s).
Abby Ward (U20) was 12th= in the High Jump (1.78m).

24th Dec 2017. Julie Briscoe Wins Ward Green 6 Again.
As last year, Julie Briscoe was easily the first lady in the Ward Green 6 at Barnsley, recording an excellent 33 mins 39 secs on the hilly course, and finishing 7th outright. Race results.

19th Dec 2017. Craig Davidson Wins Senior Christmas Handicap Race.
Many of the club's runners had their last race of the year in the Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race, over the traditional 4.5 mile course, twice round the perimeter of the park and with a lap round the running track at the end. For the first time since 1973, when John Newsome won his 2nd successive Christmas Handicap, we had a runner winning the event for the 2nd year in succession. So it was fitting that winner Craig Davidson won the John Newsome Memorial Handicap Trophy, and Craig is pictured below receiving the trophy from the Club Membership Secretary Wendy Newsome. Craig has made huge advances this year, and ran 2 mins 40 secs faster than last year, so is a worthy winner again. Other big advances were made by Rebecca Zserdicky in 2nd, Michael Page in 3rd and Matthew Hill just behind in 4th.

There was a very high standard of runners competing again this year, and we had good running conditions which helped produce some very fast times. Dale Worton recorded the 2nd best ever time on this course with 23:06, and U20 Mark Bostock wasn't far behind with the 4th best time ever of 23:11, on the current course that has been used since 2003. Matthew O'Connor was 3rd fastest with another good time of 23:50, and U17 Matthew Hill also had an outstanding run to record 24:25. Hayley Newbound was the fastest lady in 30:32, just ahead of U17 Lucie Hall with 30:41.
The handicapping worked out well, with three quarters of the runners finishing within a minute of their expected times. Mandy Geary took the award this year for being closest to their expected time, running exactly to the second her time predicted!

This was a great team result from the entire squad, who ran solidly in all 4 races. They were the only team from the club however to win medals this year.
In the individual league competition, with 3 wins out of the 4 races Ben Shackleton was a clear winner of the U11 Boys age group.
