21st Dec 2016. Craig Davidson Wins Senior Christmas Handicap Race.
There was a good turnout of 43 runners for this year's Senior Christmas Handicap Road Race, over the traditional 4.5 mile course, twice round the perimeter of the park and with a lap round the running track at the end. It was quite a close finish, with just 6 seconds between winner Craig Davidson and 2nd placed Darren Hewitt. Craig is pictured below receiving the John Newsome Memorial Handicap Trophy from the Club Membership Secretary Wendy Newsome.

There was a very high standard of runners competing this year, with James Saxton running a new record time of 22:41 on the current course that has been used since 2003, and Adam Peers also inside Paul Lockwood's previous best with 23:06. U20 Ben Read was 3rd fastest with another good time of 23:50. Katie McHale was the fastest lady in 28:57, just ahead of U17 India Elliott with 29:02.
It wasn't the closest of races this year, but the handicapping still worked out quite well, with half of the runners finishing within a minute of their expected times. Paul Marchant took the award this year for being closest to their expected time, running exactly his time predicted!

The U13 Girls were also victorious, and dominated their age group, winning every race. There were also team medals for the U17 Ladies and U15 Girls, who both finished 2nd.
Individual medals were also won by Faye Beckett (1st U20 Women), Paul Marchant (1st O40 Men), Jennifer Walsh (2nd Senior Women), Ben Butler (2nd O35 Men) & Abbey Brooke (2nd U15 Girls).

At the fourth and final meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Keighley, the club came away with an excellent team victory from the U13 Girls, and 2nd places from the Senior Men, U15 Girls & U17 Ladies. This meant that the Senior Men and the U13 Girls won the league, a superb achievement.
The Senior Men's team packed well, with the six scorers being Adam Peers 12th, Paul Marchant 15th, Ben Butler 25th, Matthew O'Connor 31st, Stewart Knowles 40th & Chris Ward 47th, and they were well supported by Daniel Franks in 56th, Andrew Cartwright 57th, Glenn Shelley 90th, Jeremy Frain 125th & Ian Shipley 126th. Faye Beckett had a superb run to finish 3rd overall and first U20 on the challenging course, and though Sarah Bostwick & Joanne Biltcliffe ran well to finish 36th & 44th, disappointingly there was no 4th counter to complete the Ladies team.
In the U17 age group India Elliott had a good run to finish 4th, and with Holly Kitching 9th & Poppy Thorpe 12th the team finished 2nd. Matthew Hill came 8th and Mark Bostock 15th. For the U15s, the girls just missed team victory by a single point, which ended up costing them the league title. Abbey Brooke had her usual fine run to come 2nd, and she was supported by Caitlin Wigglesworth in 8th & Yasmin Moorhead 17th, with Emma Preston also doing well to finish 21st. In the boy's race Bailey Mann & Callum Gaunt were 16th & 19th respectively.
As usual the U13 Girls provided the best team result, with Emily Plimmer 6th, Suzanne Brooke 12th & Lavinia Gavaghan 13th being victorious. There were also good runs from Amy Hunt in 18th, Erin Hunt 27th, Brodie Ashton 28th & Harriet Metcalf in 30th. For the boys Alexander Bostwick finished 45th. 3rd Dec 2016. Some Fast Indoor Sprint Times at Sheffield.

In the 60m races there was a Grade 2 performance from Leonie Ashmeade (U17W 7.91s), and Grade 3 performances from Amanda Shaw (SW 7.93s) & Olivia Roe (U15G 8.35s). In the 300m races Amanda just get the better of U17 Amelia Bunton as they both ran PB and Grade 1 times of 40.76s & 40.87s, and U20 Rachel Crorken wasn't far off her best with 41.55s. U15 Thomas Wood also had a good win in the 150m with 18.55s. Meeting Results.

27th Nov 2016. Paul Marchant 2nd in Barnsley 10K Road Race.
Paul Marchant had a fine run to finish 2nd in the Barnsley 10K road race from Royston, in a time of 33 mins 35 secs, an excellent performance on a quite tough and hilly course. Mark Bostock, who is not 17 until next month, also had a great run to finish 15th in 36:45, and M50 Jeremy Frain continued his improvement to finish 65th in 40:44. Natalie Duffield-Moore was our first lady home in 45:41.
Race Result.

26th Nov 2016. British Athletics Cross Challenge (inc European Trials).
Three of the leading ladies from the club competed at the British Athletics Cross Challenge at Liverpool, which included the Trials for the European Cross Country Championships. In a high class race Charlene Thomas ran superbly to finish 14th, just 45 seconds behind former European Champion Gemma Steel, whilst Jennifer Walsh continued her comeback with a fine run in 54th. Lucy Robinson also ran well to finish 43rd in the U20 race. Meeting Results.

20th Nov 2016. Third West Yorkshire Cross Country League Meeting.

It was wet and muddy at the third meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Spenborough, but for those who braved the conditions there were good team performances. This time it was the turn of the Senior Ladies to just miss team victory, losing out by 4 points, but they did have the individual winner in Charlene Thomas, who took her 2nd victory in the series. Jennifer Walsh had another good run in 3rd, and with Faye Beckett 8th and Lucy Robinson 14th also running well, the team were 2nd. The Senior Men weren't far off winning as well, coming 3rd, but not far behind the first team. Paul Marchant was first home from the club in 17th, and then there was great packing from Ben Read 20th, Ben Butler 23rd, Chris Ward 27th, Andrew Cartwright 28th & Matthew O'Connor 32nd. Also running well were Stewart Knowles 36th, Glenn Shelley in 76th, Ian Shipley 95th and Jeremy Frain in 120th.
There were two excellent team victories from the younger girls, with Abbey Brooke 2nd, Caitlin Wigglesworth 10th & Yasmin Moorhead 17th winning the U15 Girl's race, supported by Emma Preston in 26th & Lauren Raynor 36th, whilst in the U13 Girl's race Emily Plimmer 4th, Lavinia Gavaghan 10th & Suzanne Brooke 11th were victorious. Amy Hunt in 16th, Marcey Bellwood 25th & Erin Hunt in 29th also ran well, and were first 'B' team.
In the U17 age group India Elliott had her best run of the season to finish 3rd, and with Holly Kitching 10th & Poppy Thorpe 17th the team finished 2nd. In the men's race Mark Bostock 9th, Matthew Hill 11th & Liam Grosse 13th packed well to finish 3rd team. In the U11 age group the boy's team of Mark Kiroro 46th, Harrison Vetch 56th & Danny Kerins 58th finished 11th, whilst for the girls Lily Goodman 37th, Millie Powell 56th & Isabel Bates 59th finished 13th team, with Elizabeth Morgan in 61st.

Also running Grade 3s in the U15 sprints were Tamara Miller with 8.34s and Olivia Roe with 8.35s, whilst Thomas Wood ran 7.76s. Meeting Results.

11th Nov 2016. The Club's London Marathon Allocation of Places.
The London Marathon organisers have once again allocated Wakefield Harriers just 2 club entries for the 2017 event. As demand is likely to be high for these places, we are only offering them to EA registered members of the club who applied for a place themselves, and who have received a rejection letter or email, and who have also competed for the club in the last 12 months in a team event, or helped to organise a team event.
If you satisfy all these criteria, and want to be considered for one of these places, then please pass your letter or email onto Chris Ward or Peter Young. However, preference will also be given to those who didn’t receive a club place last year. The draw for the marathon place winners will be done on Tuesday 20th December, after the prize giving at the Christmas Handicap.

6th Nov 2016.  New F40 10k Record by Julie Briscoe at Abbey Dash.
The conditions weren't great, but there were still some quick times at the Leeds Abbey Dash 10K, the highlight being a New F40 Club 10k Record of 34 mins 58 secs by Julie Briscoe. The race incorporated the English 10k Championships, so the standard was high, and Julie finished 15th lady and 1st F40, a remarkable achievement after racing at Mansfield the previous afternoon.
Other Wakefield ladies running quick times were U20 runners Faye Beckett with 37:43 and Annabel Mason running 38:55, in her first serious road race. Wakefield men breaking the 40 minute barrier were Ben Butler with a PB of 34:08, and Glenn Shelley with 37:59, also a PB. Just outside 40 minutes was M50 Chris Rippon, although as usual with this event, due to the huge numbers taking part, the 'chip times' of most runners were significantly better. Race Results.

5th Nov 2016. Senior Women 5th at English National Cross Country Relays.

The club had several teams competing at the English National Cross Country Relay Championships at Mansfield, and they all did well. The best result was from the Senior Ladies team of Charlene Thomas, Julie Briscoe & Jennifer Walsh, who in a very high standard race did superbly to come 5th, the best performance by a Wakefield senior team for many years. Charlene was in a very competitive 1st leg that contained several internationals, and she was just beaten by a couple of seconds by Olympic 5000m runner Steph Twell. She did however finish ahead of Olympic 1500m finalist Laura Weightman, and ended up recording the 2nd fastest time overall. Julie & Jennifer both ran very strongly to bring the team home in a brilliant 5th place.
In the younger age groups the U13 Girls team had a great start from Emily Plimmer in 14th on leg 1, but then a mistake by the officials meant a delay in setting off Harriet Metcalfe on leg 2, so the final position of 44th by Lavinia Gavaghan was not a true reflection of their fine team performance. We also had Brodie Ashton and Marcey Bellwood competing in an incomplete B team. In the U17 Ladies race Holly Kitching, Poppy Thorpe & India Elliott all ran well to finish 48th team, and just one place better in the U17 Men's event were Mark Bostock, Liam Grosse & Matthew Hill. For the U15 Boys Bailey Mann, Joshua Dawson & Callum Gaunt also did well to come 60th.
Results of all races from the English Cross Country Association, and Video footage of all the races from Tonbridge AC.

30th Oct 2016. Second West Yorkshire Cross Country League Meeting.

On a fine autumn afternoon at the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Nunroyd Park near Guiseley, Wakefield Harriers had another successful day. The Senior Men were very close to their first team victory, just losing out by 2 points, and the women also did well to finish 2nd, and after the first 2 races both senior teams are top of the league! The U13 Girls were also victorious, and also lead the league.
The men were led home once again by Adam Peers in 11th, and not far behind in 14th was new member Paul Marchant, having his first race for the club and his first serious race over the country. Ben Butler had a great run to finish 19th, and Stewart Knowles 27th, Chris Ward 28th, Andrew Cartwright 34th & Daniel Franks 38th packed well for a great team result. Glenn Shelley in 81st and Jeremy Frain in 122nd also ran strongly for the team. Jennifer Walsh in 3rd, Faye Beckett 5th, Lucy Robinson 12th & Annabel Mason 13th all ran superbly to finish 2nd team, and a little further back Hayley Newbound, Sarah Bostwick & Joanne Biltcliffe had their own battle to finish 45th, 47th & 48th respectively.
In the younger age groups the best result was from the U13 Girl's team of Emily Plimmer 3rd, Lavinia Gavaghan 7th & Amy Hunt 17th, who won their race. Erin Hunt in 22nd & Harriet Metcalfe in 39th also ran well. The U17 Men's team of Mark Bostock 8th, Matthew Hill 12th & Liam Grosse 16th were 3rd, and in the U15 Girl's race Yasmin Moorhead 15th, Emma Preston 33rd & Lauren Raynor 36th finished 7th team. In the U11 age group the boy's team of Ben Shackleton 31st, Mark Kiroro 64th & Danny Kerins 73rd finished 13th, and for the girls Lily Goodman 33rd, Millie Powell 54th & Grace Gaunt 58th also finished 13th team. We also had Isabel Bates in 62nd and Ruby Deerden in 65th.
Where we had incomplete teams, Holly Kitching was 5th & Poppy Thorpe 13th in the U17 Ladies race, Bailey Mann & Callum Gaunt were 24th & 29th in the U15 Boy's race, and Alexander Bostwick was 52nd in the U13 Boy's race. Results website

22nd Oct 2016. Senior Ladies 5th at Northern Cross Country Relays.
The Senior Ladies team of Julie Briscoe, Faye Beckett and Lucy Robinson did very well to finish 5th at the Northern Counties Cross Country Relay Championships at Graves Park, Sheffield. They were always near the front, after Julie Briscoe gave them a flying start on leg 1, running the 5th fastest time overall. Hayley Newbound and Sarah Bostwick also ran strongly in an incomplete B team, and were well up the field in 25th place after the first 2 legs. The Senior Men's team of Andrew Cartwright, Christopher Ward, Daniel Benjamin & David Brooke finished 51st team. We also had an U13 Girls team competing, and Emily Plimmer, Lavinia Gavaghan & Harriet Metcalf did well to finish 11th in their race, with Emily recording the 12th fastest time of the day. Results of all races.

There was a good turnout of Harriers in most age groups, and some good races between club members. And we had two runners who have competed for Great Britain running in the Ladies race! The trophies and medals will be awarded at the Club Presentation Evening on Friday 25th November.
Lists of all the medallists.
For the senior runners the race was also the 16th and final round of the Club Distance Runners League Championship. Faye Beckett is this year's champion, closely followed by M40 Stewart Knowles, and with M50 Chris Rippon 3rd.

2nd Oct 2016. First West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Wakefield.

We had glorious early autumn sunshine for the first meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, which the club successfully hosted in Thornes Park, with nearly 700 runners competing in the 10 race programme. Wakefield Harriers probably had its best ever senior results, with the ladies having a dominant victory, and the men doing superbly as well to finish 2nd. We also had team victories from the U13 Girls and U15 Girls.
We were delighted to have international 1500m runner Charlene Thomas running for the team, and she was a runaway winner in the Senior Ladies race. Former junior international Jennifer Walsh was making her first appearance for the team this year, after several prolonged spells of injury, and she made a successful comeback to finish 2nd. And with the rapidly improving Faye Beckett 3rd and Jenny Latham 4th the team scored minimum points. Such was the strength of the ladies squad the 'B' team of Lucy Robinson 11th, Katie McHale 19th, Hayley Newbound 32nd and Sarah Bostwick 35th were only beaten by the 2nd team Holmfirth.
There was also a great team result from the senior men, led home in 10th place by Adam Peers. Ben Butler 23rd, Stewart Knowles 25th, Chris Ward 27th & Daniel Franks 35th packed well, and with Glen Shelley closing in the team in 66th place, they finished an excellent 2nd team.
We also had success in the younger age groups, with Abbey Brooke a clear winner of the U15 Girl's race, and with Caitlin Wigglesworth 10th & Yasmin Moorhead 11th the team finished 1st. We also had a team victory in the U13 Girl's race, from Emily Plimmer 4th, Suzanne Brooke 8th & Lavinia Gavaghan 13th.
