Jack Hallas, has been meeting with his local ASDA store to share his stories of achievement, what it is like to be a talented athlete, and what his hopes and dreams are for the future. Jack has been given a helping hand by the supermarket's Wakefield branch as he attempts to break into the ranks of professional athletics. The Wakefield store will be funding Jack for the next five years. The £500 grant will be used to buy sporting kit and help with any other expenses that occur. "I am overwhelmed by the support I have received from the store so far and I am looking forward for doing my bit for ASDA." Jack recently took part in a sponsored run on Yorkshire Day where he was raising extra funds for his athletics career, while encouraging young people to improve their fitness at the same time.

22nd Aug 2008. Disappointment for Emily Freeman in Olympic 4 x 100m Relay.
Emily was chosen once again to run leg 3 in the British 4 x 100m Relay team, and after qualifying comfortably for the final the GB team were definitely medal prospects, especially after the USA team failed to qualify. In the final itself Jeanette Kwakye and Montell Douglas had got GB off to a great start, but a tiring Montell, probably put off by the Jamaicans who had messed up in the next lane, couldn't get the baton to Emily in time, and so their race was over, and almost certainly a medal lost. It was a disappointing end to what had been a great week for Emily.

20th Aug 2008. Emily Freeman Finishes 7th in Olympic 200m Semi-Final.

Emily finished her individual Olympic adventure in the 200m semi-final, finishing an excellent 7th in her 2nd best ever time of 22.83s, which was into a slight headwind. She had run consistently well in all 3 of her races to prove she is now a world class athlete, and she can use this as a platform to go even better next year in the World Championships. Our congratulations to her for her marvellous achievement. Official result from Beijing.

19th Aug 2008. Martyn Bernard Finishes 9th in the Olympic High Jump Final.

After qualifying with ease for the Olympic High Jump Final with his 2.29m clearance in qualifying, Martyn was disappointed not to jump higher in the final itself. After clearing 2.25m he failed his first attempt at 2.29m, so he elected to take his next jump at 2.32m. This would have been a new PB, and he had 2 good attempts at the height before bowing out of the competition. However he will have been pleased to be there and see teammate Germaine Mason win the silver medal for Great Britain. Martyn ended up finishing 9th, which will go down in the club's history as the best ever Olympic performance by a Wakefield Harrier, for which he has our congratulations. Official result from Beijing.

19th Aug 2008. Emily Freeman Reaches Olympic 200m Semi-Final.
After running her 1st round heat in an impressive 22.95 secs, Emily returned 5 hours later to the "Bird's Nest" stadium for the 2nd round. She ran exactly the same time again to come 3rd in her 2nd round heat, and so clinch her place in the Olympic 200m semi-final, a marvellous performance. Official result from Beijing.

17th Aug 2008. Martyn Bernard Reaches Olympic High Jump Final.
In his heat in Beijing Martyn Bernard cleared 2.29m at the 2nd attempt to reach the Olympic High Jump Final, the first time ever a Wakefield Harrier has achieved this feat. We have had 2 semi-finalists in the past in Steve Hollings (1972 3000m Steeplechase) and Alan Bell (1980 400m), but Martyn is our first ever Olympic finalist, and we congratulate him and wish him the best of luck on his big day on Tuesday. All 3 British jumpers made the final 12, which is a great result for Team GB. Official Olympic Result

The Men's and Women's Combined Team Finish 5th in the final fixture of the Northern League Division 1 at Sports City Manchester, and as a result finish 5th overall in the division. In this tight division the club actually had the 2nd highest number of individual points of the 6 clubs, so to finish 5th and get relegated was very unlucky indeed.
The club's only 'A' string winner was Richard Gayle (Hammer 40.71m), but there were fine 2nd places from Nathan Elliot (800m 1m 58.2s), Dale Worton (1500m in a PB of 4m 03.6s), Chiedu Ufodiama (Discus 35.47m & Shot 11.08m) and the 4 x 400m Relay team of Craig Simpson, Marcus Nixey, Thomas Atkinson and Alistair Robinson who ran a New Club Record of 3m 22.4s. 12th/13th Jul 2008. Emily Freeman Wins UK Championships and Olympic Place in 200m.
Emily Freeman had the greatest win of her career when she won the UK Championships over 200m, ahead of World 400m Champion Christine Ohuruogu. Her winning time of 22.92s was again better than the Olympic 'A' standard, and sealed her selection for Beijing, for which we all send her our congratulations. Martyn Bernard also had high hopes of Olympic selection, but only came 3rd in the High Jump with 2.23m, and so was not included in the first wave of selections, even though he has the Olympic 'A' standard of 2.30m. Our other international athletes performed well, but were not quite good enough for selection. Zara Hohn improved her club record in the heats of the 100m Hurdles with 13.57s, and came 4th in the final in a New Club 100m Hurdles Record of 13.54s, whilst Charlene Thomas will have been disappointed to come 5th in the 1500m, in a time well outside the Olympic 'A' standard. Naida Bromley came 10th in the Javelin with 39.95m, and middle distance runners Kelly Johnson, Helen Singleton and Lucy O'Gorman also did well in their races against top quality competition, with Kelly qualifying for the 'B' final of the 800m.
