2005 Club News January - March

20th March 2005. Mens Team Finish 3rd in Ackworth Half Marathon.
The Ackworth Half Marathon incorporated the Yorkshire Championships once again, and both our Men and Women completed a team. After a winter lay-off Steve Tibbs is starting to return to form, finishing 25th, and supported by Stuart Bannister in 33rd and Mark Domaille in 36th the team were 3rd in the open race. 20th March 2005. Mens Team 4th in South Leeds Stadium '5'.
The Mens team of Dave Brailsford 18th, Tony Smith 23rd and Tony White 34th finished 4th team, with Keith Singleton not far behind in 35th place, showing a welcome return to form. Results from John Schofield.

13th March 2005. Brian Fozzard first over 65 in Liverpool Half Marathon
Brian continued his fine form with an excellent over 65 category win in the new Liverpool Half Marathon, finishing in the fast time of 1hr 33:12.

12th March 2005. Wakefield Harriers at the English Schools Cross Country.
There were several club members representing West Yorkshire Schools in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Norwich Showground. Jasmine Kerry had a fine run in the Senior Girls race to finished 48th and 4th West Yorkshire runner home. In their first year in the Senior Boys race Chris Price and Nathan Elliott had their usual solid runs, finishing 118th and 150th, and 2nd and 3rd from WY Schools respectively. In the Intermediate Girls race Katie McHale had an outstanding run to finish 60th and 2nd counter for WYS. Results from ESAA website.

12th March 2005. Another Strong run from Mark Domaille in Yorkshire Vets League.
In the toughest race of the series in the Tina Horn Memorial Fell race at Ogden, Mark Domaille finished in a strong 13th position amongst the Vets. Steve Wilkinson was the club's only other runner in 26th. Results from YVAA.

6th March 2005. Harriers take first two Ladies places in Sheffield 10Km.
Penny Thackray and Angie Dickie were the first two women home, for the second year running in this race, finishing in 23rd and 27th places overall. Race Results from Sportsoft.

5th March 2005. Wakefield Athletes running for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties Championships.
The club had several runners competing for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollerton Park, Nottingham. In the U20 Womens race Lucy O'Gorman had another excellent run to finish 11th, with Jasmin Kerry 43rd, and in the U17 Mens race Nathan Elliot and Chris Price finished 98th and 111th. Katie McHale ran very well to finish 53rd in the U15 Girls race, and Sam Bucknall was 156th in the U13 Boys.
Disappointingly none of the Senior Women were competing for the county, but Charlene Snelgrove and Aine Hoban competed in UK Cross Country 4Km Trials at the same venue, and finished in excellent 11th and 12th positions, not far from gaining selection for the World Championships.

26/27th February 2005. Craig Simpson 6th in 60m at AAA Indoor Championships.
Craig had a fine sequence of races in the AAA U15 Indoor Championships at the NIA Birmingham, finishing an excellent 6th in the 60m final, and twice breaking his own club record. In the semi-final he finished with a New Club U15 60m record of 7.58s.

20th February 2005. Shirley Griffiths Returns to Competition in Wombwell '5'.
Former AAA Indoor 1500m champion Shirley Griffiths made a welcome return to competition in the Wombwell 5-Mile Road Race, finishing 6th behind Sharon Marshall. Nathan Elliot was 6th in the mens race.

19/20th February 2005. John Fletcher 3rd in AAA U20 Indoor Championships.
John was our top performer in the AAA U20 Indoor Championships at the NIA Birmingham, winning a bronze medal in the Long Jump with 6.81m. Laura Whittingham was an excellent 6th in the Shot with 11.74m and Zara Hohn was a bit below her form from the Northerns, but still ran fast times in the 60m and 60m Hurdles.

19th February 2005. Lucy O'Gorman 9th in National Cross Country Championships.
Lucy finished an outstanding 9th in the U20 race at the National Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham. Jasmin Kerry was 65th in the same race, and Chris Price also had a fine run to finish 44th in the U17 Mens race. Results of all races from Sportsoft

12/13th February 2005. Naida Bromley Competes for Britain in Combined Events International.
In the Combined Events Indoor U20 International at Valencia, Naida was fourth with a New Club U20 Record of 3545 points. This was despite suffering a twisted ankle in the high jump, an injury that particularly hampered her in the long jump. Her performances were 60m Hurdles 9.04 secs (PB), HJ 1.64m, SP 11.17m (indoor PB), LJ 5.26m, 800m 2:35.71. Report from UK Athletics.

13th February 2005. First Yorkshire Vets League Race.
A disappointing start for the Vets team in the first Yorkshire Vets League race at Horsforth. Mark Domaille had a fine run to finish 10th, but with Steve Tibbs not fully fit, and other team counters Steve Wilkinson and Peter Young well down the field the team were below par, finishing 4th. 8th February 2005. Naida Bromley selected for Combined Events Indoor International.
As last year, Naida has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Combined Events Indoor U20 International, this year at Valencia, Spain on 12-13 February. Our congratulations to her on another international selection. Report from UK Athletics.

6th February 2005. Fast Time by Julie O'Mara in Alsagar '5'.
Julie continued her fine run of form with a fast time of 28m 35s when finishing 5th in the Women's 5-Mile Road Race. Sharon Marshall also ran well to finish in 16th place. Results from Sportsoft

6th February 2005. Penny Thackray Third Woman in Dewsbury 10K.
Although well down on last year's fast time Penny still finished 3rd lady and 60th overall in the large field of 1050 runners. New member Brian Fozzard ran well to finish 2nd in the M60 category. Results from JAND Results.

6th February 2005. Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships.
The turnout from the club was disappointing, but our over 50 men managed to complete a team.

5th February 2005. West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships.
There were many club members competing with distinction for their schools in these championships, held at Lightcliffe, with several being chosen to represent the county in the English Schools Championships next month. In the Senior Girls race Jasmine Kerry finished 4th, and in the Intermediate Girls Katy McHale was an outstanding 2nd, just 4 seconds behind the winner. In their first year in the Senior Boys race Chris Price and Nathan Elliott finished in excellent 2nd and 4th places.

30th January 2005. Two Medallists in Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield.
Entries were a bit sparse at this year's championships, but we had 2 medallists with Fiona Westwood second in the Long Jump and Lynsie Whyke 3rd in the Triple Jump.

29th January 2005. Aine Hoban 3rd in Northern Cross Country Championships.
Aine finished an excellent 3rd in the senior women's race at the Northern Cross Country Championships at Berry Edge, Consett. In the U20 women's race Lucy O'Gorman just missed a bronze medal by a second when finishing a fine 4th, just 12 secs behind the winner, with Jasmine Kerry also running well in 24th. Katie McHale was an excellent 14th in the U15 girls, whilst in the U17 men's race Chris Price and Nathan Elliot finished in 28th and 33rd.

22rd/23rd January 2005. John Fletcher and Zara Hohn win Northern Indoor titles.
In the Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield Zara Hohn made the step up to the U20 age group look easy by winning the 60m in a New U20 Club Record of 7.83s, and she also came second in the 60H in another New U20 Club Record of 8.88s. It was good to see John Fletcher back in action, and he easily won the U20 Long Jump with 6.88m. There were also 2 bronze medals for Craig Simpson in the U15 boys 200m with 24.24s, and in the 60m with 7.65s, which we will make our inaugural club record.

15th January 2005. Wakefield Women Dominate Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
The club's senior women's team dominated the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Skipton, taking 4 of the first 5 places to win the team race easily. Aine Hoban was a clear winner from Julie O'Mara, with Charlene Snelgrove and Penny Thackray finishing 4th and 5th. Wakefield's dominance was confirmed by Lucy O'Gorman winning the U20 race with Jasmine Kerry 4th.

In the U17 men's race Chris Price confirmed his good form with an excellent bronze medal, with Nathan Elliot not far behind in 7th. Sam Bucknall finished 7th in the U13 boys, and Katie McHale 8th in the U15 girls. Results in Excel from NoE AA
All the above mentioned have been selected to represent Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Championships.
