13th Sep 2009. Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting & Club Championships.
The Douglas Bedford Memorial Open Meeting was well attended by young athletes, and we were pleased to have our Deputy Mayor and Mayoress as guests. There was an unfortunate clash with the Yorkshire Road Relays, which greatly reduced the turnout of distance runners, but the throwing and sprint events were of a high standard. The meeting also incorporatated the club track & field championships, with many of the events being keenly contested, and it was the first time that club members themselves operated the electronic timing equipment, so well done to all concerned.
The highlights of the meeting were two new club records. There was a New Club Record of 51.49s for the U15 Girls 4 x 100m Relay by Bethany Porter, Bethany Sharp, Zoe Kerins & Grace Eyles, so congratulations to them for beating the old mark from as long ago as 1980, by the team which included future international Diane Glazebrook. Emily Freeman, 7th in World Championship 200m Final.
Emily had a solid run in her opening round of the 200m at the World Championships in Berlin, finishing 2nd to Veronica Campbell-Brown in 23.10s, and thus qualifying for the semi-final.
In the semi-final she had a marvellous race, running a New Club 200m Record of 22.64s to finish 3rd behind Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie & Veronica Campbell-Brown, and qualify as one of the fastest losers for the final. Semi-Final Results from IAAF. This is a fantastic achievement, reaching a global track final, and is probably the greatest achievement ever by a Wakefield Harrier in the history of the club, so our congratulations to Emily. Her time moves her up to 4th on the UK 200m all-time list. Read the Report on the day from UK Athletics.
In the final itself Emily couldn't quite step up another gear, but still ran very exceptionally well to finish an outstanding 7th in 22.98s, as Alison Felix retained her title in 22.02s ahead of Olympic Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie. Final Results from IAAF. Read the Report on the day from UK Athletics.
Emily also took part in the 4 x 100m relay, but with the other British women not running too well this season the team only qualified for the final as fastest losers. Emily ran well in the final on the 3rd leg, and helped the team finish 6th in 43.16s.

18th Aug 2009. Disappointment for Charlene Thomas at World Championships.
UK trials winner Charlene Thomas was competing in the heats of the 1500m at the World Championships in Berlin, and was very unlucky to lose a shoe, after an incident in the race forced her to hurdle over a fallen runner, losing her spike as she did so. Running the remainder of the race minus one shoe she still ran remarkably well, and was in contention, and only just failed to make the next round as a fastest loser. Zola Budd has the British 1500m record for running with no shoes, but Charlene now has the record for running with one shoe, in the remarkable time of 4m 09.91s ! This was a very disappointing way for Charlene to start her international career, and she was running so well that she would surely have progressed to the semi-final at least. Report on the day from UK Athletics.

In the 5th and final round of the Young Athletes League Northern 1 East Division at Wakefield the club had a resounding team victory, finishing 2nd overall in the division, and thus clinching promotion back into the Northern Premier Division.

However it was a great team effort, with many athletes competing in unfamiliar events to gain those extra valuable points. This was typified by thrower Craig Westerman, competing in the Steeplechase, and for the first time sporting the new men's team kit for 2010.
So well done to all athletes and managers for ensuring a swift return to the Northern Premier Division.

16th Jul 2008. Charlene Thomas is This Week's Athletics Weekly Cover Girl.
Charlene's magnificent win in the UK Trials has made her the UK athlete of the moment, with the picture of her 1500m victory gracing the cover of this week's Athletics Weekly, and with a short feature on her inside. She's achieved this without any help from UK Athletics or a shoe company contract, so it's good to see her finally getting the success she deserves, and she's certainly helped raise the club's profile. Let's hope this is now the start of a long and successful international career.

15th Jul 2009. Five Harriers to Represent Yorkshire and Humberside in the UK Schools Games.
Five of our athletes have been selected to represent Yorkshire and Humberside in the UK Schools Games, which will be held in Wales at the beginning of September. The club had probably it's greatest ever results in the Aviva World Trials & UK Championships at Birmingham, with two championship winners in Charlene Thomas and Emily Freeman, and a bronze medallist in Zara Hohn. They all helped raised the club's national profile, with the Wakefield Harriers name and green and white club vest broadcast to the nation.

Charlene Thomas, UK 1500m Champion.
Charlene Thomas had the greatest win of her career when she convincingly won the UK Championships over 1500m, outsprinting rivals Steph Twell & Hannah England to cross the line in 4m 09.18s. Emily Freeman was simply awesome, completely dominating the 200m and winning by a huge margin in 22.92s, and as Charlene & Emily already have the 'A' qualifying standard they booked their places for the World Championships in Berlin. For Charlene it will be her first full GB international vest, and her joy was evident in the post-race interview. We send them both our congratulations and wish them well in Berlin.
Zara Hohn also did exceptionally well to take bronze in the 100m Hurdles in 13.41s, after running a wind assisted 13.34s in the heats. However she will need to improve further to get the 'A' standard if she is to be selected for Berlin. Martyn Bernard, who is still returning from injury and still doesn't quite have the 'A' standard, will have to prove his fitness soon if he wants to make the team.
Other athletes competing were middle distance runners Kelly Johnson & Helen Singleton, who ran 2m 11.07s & 4m 32.89s in the heats of the 800m & 1500m respectively.
