30th Mar 2008. Sharon Marshall Wins Ladies Prize in South Leeds 5 Mile.
Sharon Marshall was our sole runner in the South Leeds 5 Mile road race but came away with the Ladies Prize, finishing 10th overall in 34 mins 49 secs. Download Race Results

30th Mar 2008. Harriers in Action at Spenborough Winter Warm-Up Meeting.
There were quite a few of the younger club members competing at Spenborough's Winter Warm-Up Meeting, with some creditable performances. Download Results in Excel

30th Mar 2008. Julie Briscoe Wins Ladies Prize in Wakefield Hospice 10k.
The annual Wakefield Hospice 10k race round the Merrie City again proved popular, attracting over 1300 competitors, and over 30 from the Harriers. Julie Briscoe continued her recent spell of good form by taking the Ladies Prize in the excellent time of 35 mins 43 secs in the windy conditions. Helen Singleton also had a fine run, finishing 3rd woman in the good time of 36 mins 26 secs, and with Alex Potter finishing as 3rd scorer the ladies team came 2nd. For the men 16-year old Sam Bucknell (pictured right) made his road race debut, and was first Harrier home in 36 mins 25 secs, ahead of Paul Hallas and Richard West. Paul was first in the M45 category, and the men's team finished 7th. Wakefield athletes Jason Richards and Steve Williamson also did well, coming 2nd and 3rd in the wheelchair race. 16th Mar 2008. Zoe Kerins Breaks Club Record at Manchester Indoor Open.
Zoe Kerins broke her own Club Record for the U13 Girls 60m indoors at the City of Manchester Open Meeting, running in the U15 Girls race and finishing in 8.37sec. This currently makes her joint 2nd in the U.K for the U13 Girls 60m, and our congratulations to Zoe once again.

15th/16th Mar 2008. Two BUSA Indoor Titles for Zara Hohn.
Zara had her first major successes of the year when running in the BUSA Indoor Championships at Sheffield. She won double gold in the 60m Hurdles, in a time of 8.44s, and the 60m sprint in 7.63s. She is now the British Universities Champion for 2008/9 in both events, so our congratulations to Zara, and it is great to see her back on good form. Results from BUSA.

16th Mar 2008. Julie Briscoe Wins Yorkshire Half Marathon Championships at Ackworth.
The club had several runners competing in the Ackworth Half Marathon, which also incorporated the Yorkshire Half Marathon Championships, and Julie Briscoe won her first county title. She finished 40th overall in 1 hr 20:04, a good time in the cool and windy conditions, and was first lady home, winning the title by just 10 seconds. With Sharon Marshall 27th and Alex Potter 32nd the ladies team came 4th overall, but in the Yorkshire Championships they finished 2nd to win silver medals. Dave Brailsford was first male runner home in 68th out of over 700 runners, and had a good run to finish 4th in the M50 category in 1 hr 23:51. Race Results from Sportsoft.

15th Mar 2008. Harriers Run for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships.
Lucy O'Gorman was selected with several other Harriers to compete for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Nottingham, and she finished a very creditable 37th in the senior women's race to finish 5th Yorkshire runner, and help the county win the team race. Katie McHale came 48th and 2nd counter for Yorkshire in the U20 race, as the county came 9th, whilst Lauren Proctor was Yorkshire's leading runner in the U15 Girls race to finish an outstanding 6th place, and with Sally Smith 4th counter in 34th the team came home 2nd. Olivia Radcliffe was 112th in the U13 girls race and Jake Worton & Jack Mitchell came 151st and 228th respectively in the U13 boys event. 9th Mar 2008. Grace Eyles 7th in UK U15 Indoor Combined Events Championship
In the England Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championship at the EIS Sheffield Grace Eyles came 7th overall in the U15 Girls Pentathlon, and in the incorporated North of England Championship she came 2nd, winning a silver medal. Her performances of 60m Hurdles 10.77sec (a PB), High Jump 1.60m (another PB and just short of the 1.61m club record), Shot Putt 8.24m, Long Jump 5.10m (a PB) and 800m in 2min 44.18sec gave her a New Club Record U15 Pentathlon score of 2839. Bethany Porter also did well to finish 21st with 2366 points, with her best result being her 60m Hurdles in 10.13s. Results from England Athletics.

9th Mar 2008. Harriers Competing in East Hull 20 Mile Road Race.

Several distance runners from the club competed in the East Hull 20 Mile Road Race as part of their preparations for the London Marathon. Race Results in Excel from East Hull Harriers. and more photographs from Pat Wood.

8th Mar 2008. Wakefield Harriers at the English Schools' Cross Country Championships.
There were many club members representing West Yorkshire Schools and running very well in the English Schools' Cross Country Championships at Sefton Park, Liverpool. In the Senior Boys race Jack Hallas was 3rd counter in 39th place, and helped the county to team victory by the narrow margin of 2 points, the county's best result. The club were best represented in the Intermediate Boys race, where the Harriers runners made up no less than 5/6th of the county team who finished 10th out of the 43 counties. Sam Bucknell and Ben Homer were West Yorkshire's first 2 counters in 26th & 27th places, and with Dale Worton 3rd in 57th, Nathan Bolton 5th in 147th and Tom Coney 6th counter in 185th, it was almost a case of the Harriers taking on the rest of England !
In the Senior Girls race Chloe Patchett was West Yorkshire's leading runner in 48th, and with Katie McHale 2nd counter in 71st and Catherine Hillerby 5th counter in 199th the club made up half the county team which finished 21st. In the Intermediate Girls race Lauren Proctor was 2nd counter with an excellent 16th, and in the Junior Girls race Sally Smith was 78th and Lauren Brooke 162nd to help the county finish 19th. This was a great showing by runners from the club.

2nd Mar 2008. Sprinters in Action at the Manchester Indoor Open.
Zoe Kerins equalled her own Club Record for the U13 Girls 60m indoors at the City of Manchester Open Meeting, running in the U15 Girls race and finishing in 8.47sec. Rebecca Watts was also quick with 8.39s as an U15, Ricardo Francis ran an excellent 60m in 7.15s, and Amy Wilson ran 8.30s in the Senior Women's race. Download Results from Sale Harriers.

2nd Mar 2008. Harriers Competing in Norton 9 Mile Road Race.
Matthew Dodsworth was our first runner home in the Norton 9, near Doncaster. He came 44th in a time of 57 mins 08 secs, and Stuart Anderson came 1st in the M70 category. Race Results from ukresults.net

24th Feb 2008. Road Runners in Action over the weekend.
The club had runners taking part in road races around the region, with some creditable performances in the Snake Lane 10 at Pocklington near York and the Huddersfield 10k.

23/24th Feb 2008. Thomas Atkinson Makes Final in AAA Indoor Championships.
As last year Thomas reached the final of the AAA U17 men's 800m at the NIA at Birmingham, finishing in 6th place, after earlier setting an indoor PB of 1:57.85 secs in his heat. The Harriers also had three girls competing in the under 15 girls age group. Rebecca Watts reached the semi finals of the 60m in 8.37s, whilst Sophie Ellerker ran in the heats recording 8.50s. 23rd Feb 2008. Lauren Proctor Finishes 9th in National Cross Country Championships.
The club had several runners taking part in the English National Cross Country Championships at Alton Towers, competing against the top cross country runners in the country. Star performance as expected was from Northern Champion Lauren Proctor, who finished an outstanding 9th in the U15 Girls race, and first finisher from the north. This was the club's best individual performance in the National for a number of years. In the U13 Girl's race Olivia Radcliffe finished 94th, with Libby Greatorex 151st and Bethany Sharp 209th.
In the U13 Boy's race Jake Worton finished 105th, with Daniel Franks 119th and Jack Mitchell 187th, whilst Ryan Hartley came 227th in the U15 Boy's race, and Dale Worton 132nd in the U17 Men's race. In the Senior Men's race Steve Faulkner finished a fine 521st, out of the large field of over 1200, with Matthew Dodsworth 678th, Richard West 813rd, Tony White 825th and Chris Ward 834th. 17th Feb 2008. Chris Price Finishes 2nd in Wombwell Five.
Chris was second man home in the local Wombwell Five Mile Road Race, finishing in a the fine time of 26 min 13 secs. M50 vet Keith Singleton was next Harrier home, followed by Chris Ward. Results from Wombwell AC.

17th Feb 2008. Harriers Representing Region in Inter-City Challenge.
Once again there were three Wakefield athletes representing the region in the Inter City Challenge, this time in the final at the EIS, Sheffield. Helen Singleton was 4th in the 800m in 2:11.39, Zara Hohn was 6th in the 60m hurdles in 8.66s, and Mikaela Harrison ran the 400m leg in the medley relay race.

10th Feb 2008. Zara Hohn Finishes 5th in UK Indoor Championships.
At the Norwich Union World Trials & UK Indoor Championships, at the Sheffield EIS, Zara showed that she is on her way back to her form of 2006. She finished 5th in the 60m Hurdles in a top quality field in a fast 8.49s, not far from her best. Results from UK Athletics.

10th Feb 2008. Thomas Atkinson Wins Gold in Scottish Indoor Championships.
Thomas competed once again in the Scottish Indoor Championships at the Kelvin Hall, and this year was victorious in the U17 men's 800m, with fast time of 2min 00.05 secs. Thomas had to run a heat, semi and then final on the same day, but his strength proved too much for the other athletes as he came home well clear. He has also been asked to represent the U20 men's Northern Counties for the 800m in a multi-national match in Malta in April, and the club sends him our congratulations.

10th Feb 2008. Dave Brailsford First M50 in Liversedge Half Marathon.
A couple of Harriers ran in the Liversedge Half Marathon, from Roberttown, with over 50 vet Dave Brailsford having a good run to finish 14th and win his category in 1hr 24:46. Race Results from ukresults.net

3rd Feb 2008. Wakefield Harriers Have 4 Teams Competing in France.
The Harriers were invited by Wakefield's twin town of Castres to take part in a long distance relay race organised by the town's running club, Les Coureurs de Fond de Castres. 18 athletes made the trip and came back with 2 trophies - the ladies team came 3rd and the M50 team also came 3rd in their respective categories. Out of the large field of over 300 teams of 4 the men's team finished just in front of the vets in 29th, after Chris Price had given them a flying start on leg 1. Full report of the weekend.

3rd Feb 2008. Fast 5 Mile Road Run from Helen Singleton in Alsager 5.
Helen confirmed her recent good form with a fast 5 mile run at Alsager, finishing 95th overall and 5th lady in 28 mins 55 secs, out of a top class field of over 1000 runners. Father Keith was 7th in the M50 category, in 32 mins 38 secs. Results from race-results.co.uk

3rd Feb 2008. Wakefield Harriers Ladies 3rd in Dewsbury 10k.
In the Dewsbury 10k Julie Briscoe ran a fine 36 mins 09 secs to finish 3rd lady, and led the scoring trio of Julie Briscoe, Shirley Griffiths and Jayne Patchett who finished 3rd team out of a large field of over 1000 runners. With many of the Harriers away competing in France, it was left to M45 vet Paul Hallas to lead the remaining male Harriers home in 36 mins 32 secs. Full Results from Dewsbury Road Runners

2nd Feb 2008. West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships.
As usual the club had a large number of runners competing for the Wakefield District and for other schools areas in the West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships at Batley. Out of the six races no less than three were won by Harriers Club members, an excellent achievement. The race winners were the in form Lauren Proctor (inter girls), Benjamin Homer (inter boys), and Chloe Patchett (senior girls). Medals were also won by Sally Smith (2nd junior girls) and Sam Bucknall (2nd inter boys). Race Results from Bradford Schools AA.

27th Jan 2008. Harriers Representing Region in Inter-City Challenge.
There were three Wakefield athletes representing the region in the first semi final of the Inter city challenge at Sports City, Manchester. Helen Singleton, Ruth Dales and Mikaela Harrison competed in the match which saw our region reach the final to be held at EIS, Sheffield on Sunday,17th February. Helen was third in the 800 metres in 2:11.54, Ruth 7th in the 60m hurdles and Mikaela ran the 400m leg in the medley relay race.

27th Jan 2008. Grace Eyles Wins Northern Indoor U15 Long Jump Title.
At the Northern Athletics Indoor U17 & U15 Championships at Sheffield the club had several distinguished performers. In the U15 Girls events Grace Eyles won the U15 Long Jump title with a PB of 5.05m, and Bethany Porter also jumped well to come 6th with 4.62m, as well as finishing 8th in the 60m Hurdles with 10.06s, after improving her inaugural club record at the event in the heats with a New Club Record of 9.94s. Grace also finished 5th in the 200m in 27.04s and 6th in the 60m in 8.41s, with Zoe Kerins 6th in the 200m in 27.64s. In the U17 Men's Shot Craig Westerman took silver with 11.09m, and Thomas Atkinson was also 2nd in the 800m in 1 min 59.72s.

26th Jan 2008. Lauren Proctor & U17 Men's Team Win Northern Cross Country Titles.
In the Northern Cross Country championships at Roundhay Park, Leeds, the club had one of it's best days in these championships for some years, with an individual winner and one team victory. Lauren Proctor ran outstandingly well on the tough hilly course, and in very windy conditions, to win the U15 Girl's title after an exciting battle, which gave her victory by one second. Sally Smith finished a fine 17th, and with Lauren Brooke 36th and Louisa Long 68th the team were just out of the medals in 4th, but first Yorkshire team.

The club had high hopes from the U17 Men's team, the Yorkshire champions, and they duly delivered, bringing home the team trophy and gold medals. Jack Hallas was a fine 11th, and was well supported by Ben Homer in 23rd, Sam Bucknell 29th & Joe Hargreaves 48th to claim the title of Northern Champions, a fantastic team performance.
In the U13 Boys the team finished an excellent 6th, and 2nd Yorkshire team, with solid runs from Jack Mitchell 38th, Jake Worton 39th, Jack Richmond 47th & Daniel Franks 57th. Our only other complete team was the Senior Men who finished 30th, with Steve Faulkner our leading runner 207th out of the large field of nearly 700.
In the other races there were some fine individual performances. In the Senior Women's race Lucy O'Gorman made a welcome return with an excellent 15th place finish, with Julie Briscoe not too far behind in 25th. In the U13 Girls Olivia Radcliffe ran well to finish 12th, and in the U17 Ladies Catherine Hillarby was 51st.

20th Jan 2008. Julie Briscoe Second Lady in York Knavesmire Half Marathon.
The club had a good turnout of runners in the Knavesmire 'Brass Monkey' Half Marathon at York. Julie Briscoe had an outstanding run to finish 2nd lady, only beaten by international runner Hayley Haining, and she ran the fast time of 1 hr 18:27, which is not too far off her club record. Sharon Marshall in 1 hr 32:42, and Emma Pearson in 1 hr 47:27, making her debut at the distance, made up the ladies scoring trio. Richard West was first male Harrier home in 1 hr 25:12, followed by Chris Ward in 1 hr 32:57. Results from ukresults.net

19th/20th Jan 2008. Helen Singleton Wins Northern Indoor 1500m Title.
At the Northern Athletics Senior and U20 Indoor Championships at Sheffield there were some excellent performances from club athletes, with pride of place going to Helen Singleton, who won the Senior Women's 1500m title in 4 mins 38.37s. There was a medal also for Ruth Dales, who had a great run in the 60m Hurdles, winning a bronze in 8.83s, with Zara Hohn 4th in 8.92s. Also in the Senior Women's events Zara came 4th in the 60m in 7.87s, with Ruth 6th in 8.11s, and in the Shot Debbie Collinson came 4th with 11.47m, with Fiona Thomas 7th with 10.91m. In the U20 Women's 1500m Chloe Patchett took silver with 4 mins 51.22s, and Mikaela Harrison came 4th in the 400m in 58.48s, after running 57.89s in the heats.
Running against much older U20 athletes, Thomas Atkinson came 3rd in the 800m in 2 mins 02.27s, after running his heat in 1 min 59.55s, and also ran a fine 52.94s in his 400m heat. In the Senior Men's 200m Ricardo Francis came 6th in 22.94s, and Chris Price came 8th in the 3000m in 9 mins 25.47s. Full Results from Northern Athletics

13th Jan 2008. Charlene Thomas Competes for England in Spain.
Charlene was selected by the English Cross Country Association to compete for England in the major international meeting in Elgoibar, Spain, and finished a creditable 14th in the women's 6.47km race. Report from England Athletics

13th Jan 2008. New U15 60m Club Record from Rebecca Watts.
Rebecca was one of several athletes from the club competing in the Reebok Indoor Open Meeting at Manchester, and ran a New Club U15 60m Record in 8.25s. Results from Manchester.

13th Jan 2008. New U13 60m Club Record from Zoe Kerins.
Zoe competed as a guest in the North Eastern Counties AA Indoor Championships at Gateshead, and twice broke the U13 60m Club Record. She won her heat in 8.54s and ran the final even faster, running a New Club U13 60m Record in 8.47s. Results from Gateshead.

13th Jan 2008. Good Team Result for M50s in Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships.
In the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships at Keighley the men's over 50 team of Dave Brailsford, Richard West and Peter Young were just 2 points out of the team medals in finishing 4th team out the 17 complete teams from the 44 competing clubs. Steve Wilkinson and Tony Audsley also packed well to give the M50 team the prize for 5 or more to score. Brian Fozzard ran well to finish 3rd in the M70 race, and Shirley Griffiths, making her vets debut, finished 7th in the F35 category, with Pat Wood 8th in the F50 category.

5th Jan 2008. Two Champions from the Harriers at Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
It was a great day for the club at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Huddersfield, with 2 individual winners, and 5 sets of team medals. Lauren Proctor won the U15 Girl's title and Jack Hallas took gold in the U17 Men's race, leading the U17 Men's team to victory.

3rd Jan 2008. First Indoor Athletics Meeting at Thornes Park Stadium.
