29th June 2005. Jason Richards Selected for the IPC European Championships.
In the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team announced for the IPC European Championships in
Finland on August 22-27 Jason Richards has been selected for the 1500m in the T53 category. Our
warmest congratulations to Jason for his latest international selection.
25th June 2005. Women's Team Finish 7th again in UK Womens League.
Once again the team were without several leading athletes, and with things not going our way in
some events we finished 7th again in the second match at Birmingham. Our leading performer was
again Aine Hoban, who was narrowly beaten into 2nd place in the 1500m. Helen Singleton ran
one of her best times to finish 5th in the 800m, and our other top 5 performers in the 'A'
string events were Laura Jarvis (4th HJ), Suzanne Roberts (5th Hammer) and Laura Whittingham

19th June 2005. Junior Men finish 2nd in National Junior League.
In their third match at Cleckheaton the Junior Men had by far their best performance of the
season to finish an excellent 2nd in the Pennine division. Nathan Elliot was a double winner
of the 800m and 1500m, and Robert Lee won the Triple Jump. Team result :- Trafford 312, Wakefield 240.5, Spenborough 203.5, Bingley 192.5, Harrogate 180,
Rowntrees 162.5, Burnley 154, Bolton 15.

19th June 2005. Harriers Vets team finishes 3rd in Millenium Way Relay.
In the difficult hot and humid conditions the Vets team finished 3rd overall, but they were
disappointed to lose the vets prize for the first time to Keighley & Craven.

18th June 2005. Emily Freeman Makes Winning Return in Northern T&F Championships.
After more than a year out through injury it was great to see Emily Freeman, our Commonwealth Games
sprinter, back in action. She took the 100m title in 11.71s at the Northern T&F Championships
at Sports City, Manchester. We had two other top athletes winning titles, with Suzanne Roberts
and Aine Hoban
winning the Womens Hammer and 5000m respectively. Our other medallists were

15th June 2005. Harriers in Record Breaking form in WYT&F League.
At the 4th WYT&F League meeting at Thornes Park there were again several Wakefield winners, but
star performers were Craig Simpson, who ran a New WYT&F League U15 200m Record of 23.9s,
and Lucy Holmes, who ran another U13 Girls 80m Club Record with 10.8s, her 3rd this season !
Both the club's mens and womens teams are still leading the league. Grace Eyles, Mikaela Harrison
and Fiona Thomas still lead the U11, U17 and senior women's standings.

14th June 2005. Team finish 2nd in the 6th Yorkshire Vets League race.
In the 6th race in the league at Starbeck, near Harrogate, the team finished 3rd
behind league leaders Knavesmire. Former Olympic 400m runner Alan Slack made his debut in the
league, and was our leading runner in 9th place. The other 3 scorers were Steve Wilkinson in
18th, Richard West in 21st and Peter Young in 32nd. The team remain in third place in the league.

11/12th June 2005. Naida Bromley finishes third again in AAA U20 Heptathlon.
Naida repeated her bronze medal position of last year, scoring 4,758 points to finish in third
place in the AAA U20 Championships at Hexham. Her fine performances in the 7 disciplines were
100mH 15.49s, HJ 1.57m, Shot 11.17m, 200m 25.97s, LJ 5.37m, JT 32.96m, and 800m 2min 31.27s.
4th June 2005. Club Finish Third Again in North of England League Division 1.
In Division 1 of the North of England League, the combined mens and womens team had another good
result, finishing third in the second match at Gateshead.
For the Men Mark Keeler won the Shot and came 2nd in the Discus, and we also had 2nd places for
John Uridge (100m), Mark Lindsey (Jav) and John Fletcher (LJ).
In the Women's events Fiona Thomas was our only winner, in the Shot, and she was backed up by
Amy Risdale winning the 'B' event. There were 2nd places for Amy Wilson (100m) and Vikki Mills (PV).
It was a solid team performance by the men and women, which now leaves us 2nd in the League. Team Result :- Gateshead 497, Leeds C 432, Wakefield 393, Bolton 351, Rotherham 335,

4th June 2005. Women's Team Finish 7th in first UK Womens League Meeting at Wigan.
Returning to the UK top division for the 3rd time, the team were without several star athletes,
but still finished a creditable 7th in their first match at Wigan. It was quite a young team,
with several athletes making their debut in the highest level of club competition.
Our star performer was Aine Hoban, who was the club's only 'A' event winner. She won the 3000m in a New Club 3000m
Record of 9 min 34.27s, trimming Penny Thackray's time by 6 tenths. With Julie O'Mara finishing
2nd in the 'B' race the 3000m turned out to be our best event. Good points were also gained in
the 1500m through Lucy O'Gorman and Penny Thackray, and by Zara Hohn winning the 'B' 100mH.
The 4 x 100m relay team also did well to finish 2nd, and the whole team performed well. Match Result :- Sale 196.5, Trafford 170, Windsor SEH 163.5, Birchfield 157.5,

29/30th May 2005. Three Harriers Compete for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties Championships.
Suzanne Roberts continued her good form by finishing 2nd in the Hammer with 59.02m at the
Inter-Counties Championships at Bedford. U20 Chris Kirk had the longest jump for the Men in the
qualifying rounds in the Long Jump, but was unable to record a decent jump in the final.
Ruth Dales was also competing for the county in the 100mH, but was unable to reach the final.

28/29th May 2005. Zara Hohn wins Northern Junior 100m Hurdles Title.
There were many fine performances in the NoEAA Junior T&F Championships at Cudworth, but the
club's only gold medal winner this year was Zara Hohn, who won the
U20 100mH
title in her first year in the age group, in a fast time of 14.15s. She also took silver in the
U20 100m, and
there were also medals for Lucy O'Gorman (2nd U20 3000m), Alison Hackney (3rd U20 400mH),
Ashley Beckett (3rd U15 JT) and Craig Simpson (2nd U15 200m).

29th May 2005. Good Team Performance in Yorkshire Vets League.
In the home race in this series at Haw Park Woods, near Walton, the team had by far their best
result, easily winning the team race. Adam Cooper was first home in 5th, and was followed by
Dave Brailsford in 10th, Pete McNamara in 13th, and Keith Singleton running strongly in his
first vets league race to finish 15th. The team have now moved up to 4th place in the league.

28th May 2005. Another Club Record for Lucy Holmes.
At the Cleethorpes Open Meeting she improved her U13 100m Club Record with 13.2 seconds, her
6th Club Record this season !
25th May 2005. Harriers now well clear after 3rd WYTF League Meeting.
In the 3rd WYTF League meeting at Thornes Park there were again many Wakefield winners,
and both the club's mens and womens teams are now leading the league. Richard Higson-Blythe is
leading the mens individual standings, and Grace Eyles, Mikaela Harrison and Fiona Thomas are
leading the U11, U17 and senior women's standings.

22nd May 2005. 3 New Club Records as Girls finish 5th in National Junior League.
In the second match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division, at Gateshead, the
girls team finished fifth, despite a shortage of distance runners, and now lie 5th in the division.
Individual 'A' string winners were Zara Hohn in the 100mH and Adele Lassau in the High Jump,
and there were 3 new club records. Alison Hackney ran a New U20 400mH Club Record of
64.9s, Emma Tate jumped a New U17 Pole Vault record of 2m 60, and there was a New U20 4 x 100m Relay Club Record of 49.3s for the team of
Rachael Shaw, Jessica Wilson, Adele Lassau and Zara Hohn. Team result :- Trafford 279, Edinburgh Southern 252, Leeds City 228, Sale 224,

Although the team was incomplete, in their second match at Burnley they acquitted themselves

22nd May 2005. Charlene Snelgrove & Suzanne Roberts on form at Loughborough.
At the Loughborough International Meeting Charlene was representing England, and just a day after
breaking the club 800m record, was once again very close to the club 1500m record when finishing
3rd in 4 min 20.8s. Competing for Loughborough Students Suzanne was close to her best in
the Hammer with a throw of 60.57m.
22nd May 2005. Team Victory for Men in Sandal Castle 10K.
There were again over 1000 runners in this this popular off-road race, and for the second
successive year the club won the mens team race. With a team made up of vets led by Adam Cooper
in 12th, and with Dave Brailsford in 22nd and Peter McNamara 33rd they secured team victory again. Race Results from ukresults.net.
10th May 2005. Charlene Snelgrove close to Club 1500m Record.
In the Trafford Grand Prix BMC races at Stretford, Charlene was very close to Shirley Griffiths
club record when winning her 1500m race in 4 min 20.6 secs.
8th May 2005. U13 Girls Break Club 4 x 100m Record at YA League Meeting.
In the 1st match of the Northern Premier division of the Young Athletes League at Wakefield the
best result was by the U13 Girls team of Emma Simpson, Hannah Plumb, Rebecca Watts and Lucy Holmes, who
broke the U13 Girls 4 x 100m Club Record with 57.4s. Craig Simpson & Lucy Holmes won
athlete of the month awards for their victories in the U15 Boys 200m and U13 Girls 150m.

8th May 2005. Team Below Par in Yorkshire Vets League.
In the 4th race in this series at Heslington, near York, the team were below strength. Mark Domaille was again our
leading runner in 16th, and with Steve Wilkinson 20th, Richard West 22nd and Mike Logan 52nd
the team finished only 6th, but still moved up to 5th place in the league.

4th May 2005. Lucy Holmes Equals Club Record at 2nd WYTF League Meeting.
In the 2nd WYTF League Meeting at Cleckheaton there were many Wakefield winners, but best result
was from Lucy Holmes, who equalled the U13 Girls 80m Club Record with 11.0s.
Other excellent Wakefield performers were Craig Simpson, who was a clear winner of the
U15 Boys 200m in a fast 24.6s, and Mikaela Harrison winning the U17 Ladies 200m in 26.6s.

1st May 2005. Penny Thackray 3rd in Sheffield Half Marathon.
In this popular race with over 3400 finishers, Penny was third lady home, and 60th overall, in a
time of 1hr 21:18.

1st May 2005. Good Third Place in first North of England League match at Manchester.
After last year's promotion to Division 1 of the North of England League, the combined mens and
womens team had a good start, finishing third in the first match at Sports City, Manchester.
Best track performer for the men was John Uridge with 3rd in the 100m and 200, whilst in the
field John Fletcher was 2nd in the Long Jump, and Rob Lee 3rd in the Triple.
For the women Julie O'Mara had a 2nd and 3rd in the 3000m and 1500m, and there were 2nd places
for Amy Wilson and Tracy Hilton in the 400m and 400mH. In the field there were also top 3 placings
for Jessica Wilson (LJ), Lynsie Whyke (TJ), Laura Jarvis (HJ) and Caroline Nutt (PV). The 4 x 400m
Relay team also finished 2nd. Team Result :- Sale 499, Leeds C 420, Wakefield 377, Bolton 368, Blackpool 349,

25th April 2005. Adrian Howden Badly Injured in Road Accident.
It is with great sadness that we have to report the serious injury to Adrian Howden, who was struck
by a motorcycle whilst out running. Athough he only joined the club to run with the Vets in the
twilight of his illustrious career, he was a valued and popular team member. Adrian had been a
truly outstanding runner, gaining a GB international vest as a Junior, and winning many Yorkshire titles
over the years. He had also been a winner of the Abbey Dash 10k. Adrian's injuries unfortunately
mean he won't be able to run again, but all at the club wish him as full a recovery as possible.
24th April 2005. First Match for Junior Men in National Junior League.
The Junior Men's team took part in their first match in the National Junior League Pennine
division, at Cleckheaton, and the small team acquitted themselves well, finishing sixth team.
Nathan Elliot was the only 'A' string winner in the 1500m, with a fine 2nd place in the 800m as well. Team result :- Trafford 299, Bingley 245, Harrogate 230.5, Rowntrees 199,

24th April 2005. Solid Start by the Girls in National Junior League.
In the first match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division, at Leeds, the
girls team got their season off to a solid start, finishing fourth team.
With several key athletes missing there were no individual 'A' string winners, but it was
a good team effort, and the 4 x 100m relay team were close to the club U20 record. Team result :- Trafford 232, Liverpool H 205, Sale 198, Wakefield 184, Leeds City 180,
Birchfield 170, Edinburgh Southern 154, Wigan 152.

24th April 2005. Women Win Team Prize in Rothwell 10k.
We had several runners in action in the popular Rothwell 10k, which incorporated the Yorkshire
Vets Championships.
Just a day after running in the National Road Relays, Sharon Marshall and Shirley Griffiths
teamed up with Denise Tibbs to win the Women's team prize.
Steve Tibbs continued his return to form, finishing 22nd in 34:38, and backed up by Tony Smith
and Keith Singleton the Mens team were 9th.

23rd April 2005. Women's Team Finish an Excellent 6th in National 6-Stage Road Relays.
The Women's distance running team performed once again at the very highest level, with the team
of Angie Dickie, Aine Hoban, Sharon Marshall, Shirley Griffiths, Julie O'Mara and Penny
Thackray finishing 6th team in the National 6-Stage Road Relays at Sutton Park. They were also
the first team home from the North of England.
Aine had an outstanding run on the 2nd leg, bringing the team from 26th to 5th place, and
running the 8th fastest time of the day.

17th April 2005. Good Turnout of youngsters and Club Records at the Wakefield Open.
There were several fine performances from Wakefield athletes, but the start performer was
Lucy Holmes who ran a New Club U13 200m Record of 28.0s, as well as a best 100m record
without wind assistance of 13.6s. There was also some very fast sprinting from Craig Simpson in
the U15 Boys 100m & 200m.

17th April 2005. Five Wakefield Harriers Complete the London Marathon.
There was once again a small turnout from the club, with only 5 athletes making the start
line. The Wakefield finishers were Mark Domaille and Stuart Banister who both managed to
break the 3-hour barrier, Denise Tibbs running a PB, Robert Parfrey and Michael Walsh. Race Results from London Marathon website.
10th April 2005. Excellent turn out in Wakefield Hospice City 10k.
This race round the Merrie City centre proved even more popular this year, with 1273
enthusiastic participants, and including some top class runners from the Midlands. Young
Nathan Elliot in 23rd was the first Wakefield Harrier this year, ahead of Adam Cooper 29th,
and Steve Tibbs 43rd. This trio finished 4th in the Men's team race.
Aine Hoban and Julie O'Mara were clearly 1st and 2nd in the Women's race, both running fast times
under 36 minutes.

10th April 2005. Strong Team Performance in Yorkshire Vets League.
In another tough race in this series, over a new course at Meltham, Dave Brailsford had one of
his best ever runs to finish 6th, and with Mark Domaille again running strongly in 10th, Peter McNamara in 15th
and Richard West in 23rd, the team finished 2nd behind a strong team from Pudsey and Bramley.

9th April 2005. New records set at first WYTF League Meeting at Wakefield.
There were 3 new league records at this meeting, with Bingley's Matthew Cottam demolishing the
long-standing U17 Mens 100m and 200m records. Amongst the best Wakefield performers were double
victors Richard Higson-Blythe (SM 100m & 200m), Grace Eyles (U11 75m & 600m), Lucy Holmes (U13
80m & HJ), Mikaela Harrison (U17 100m & 300m) and Katie McHale (U17 800m & 1500m).

3rd April 2005. Lucy Holmes equals the U13 200 metre Club Record.
In the Open Meeting at Hull Lucy equalled the U13 200 metre Club Record of 29.0 secs.
Congratulations to her, and let's hope she can make the record her own next time.
3rd April 2005. Double Victory for the Thomas's at Pendle.
Husband & wife combination of Darren & Fiona Thomas both had victories in the senior mens/womens Shot.
Darren, with his new rotational technique, putted 10.54m, whilst Fiona won the womens
competition with a standing putt of 10.94m. She backed this up with a strong run
in the 100m with a 2nd place in 12.7 secs.
2nd April 2005. Women's Team 4th in North of England 6-Stage Road Relays.
Athough not at full strength, the Women's team of Sharon Marshall (18:08), Helen Singleton (18:52),
Jasmine Kerry (19:00), Angela Dickie (18:07), Penny Thackray (17:03) and Aine Hoban (16:17)
still had a creditable performance to finish 4th team. Still only 12th after the first 4 legs,
Penny and Aine almost brought the team into the medals, with Aine on the last leg running the 4th fastest time of the day.
