2004 Club News July - September

26th September 2004. Sharon Marshall lines up with Olympic and World Champions!.
The Wakefield Harriers vest was prominent on the start line of the Great North Run as Sharon lined up alonside Deratu Tulu, Berhane Adere and Benita Johnson. She couldn't quiet match the pace of the big stars, but still had a creditable run to finish 25th in the Women's Elite race. In the Wheelchair race Jason Richards finished an excellent 4th, with S Williamson not far behind in 6th.

26th September 2004. Vets Team finish 2nd again in the 8th Yorkshire Vets League race.
In the 8th league race at Honley the team again finished 2nd, but this time behind host club Holmfirth, and so closed the gap on league leaders Knavesmire. Steve Tibbs was first man home once more in 6th, and our other counters were Steve Wilkinson in an excellent 11th, Richard West in 27th, and Mike Logan in 36th. The team remain in second place in the league with one race to go. Denise Tibbs had a fine run to finish 7th in the Women's race. Results from YVAA.

18th September 2004. Two Team Victories for the Harriers in Yorkshire Road Relays.
The club had a successful afternoon at the Don Valley Stadium at Sheffield, winning two of the Yorkshire Road Relay titles. The Women's team of Eileen Mannion, Charlene Snelgrove, Julie O'Mara and Penny Thackray started as favourites, and had a clear victory with 3 runners in the fastest 6 overall. The talented U17 Mens team of Nathan Elliot, Paul Rice, John Rice and Chris Price were also victorious, with Nathan recording the fastest time of the day. The Senior Men finished 12th. 12th September 2004. Angie Dickie wins Temple Newsam 5.
Angie easily won the women's category in this 5 Mile road race, and finished 11th overall in a time of 30 min 42 secs. Race Results

12th September 2004. New Club Record for Jess Wilson.
Competing in the Nestle Rowntrees Open meeting Jess Wilson jumped a New U15G Club Long Jump Record of 5m 29cm, breaking Naida Bromley's old mark. Meeting Results

12th September 2004. Junior Women finish 5th in NJL National Final.
Our Junior Women's team finished in a magnificent 5th in the National Junior League National Final at Derby. It was a great team performance by the girls to finish fifth in the whole country, and it was also a great individual achievement by U17 Zara Hohn, who won the Athletics Weekly Grand Prix for 2004. 'A' string winners in the match were Zara in the 100mH and Alison Hackney in the 400mH, with a New U20 Club Record of 64.95s. We also won the 'B' string races in the hurdles through Alison and Javelin star Laura Whittingham showing her versatility in the 400mH.

11th September 2004. Combined Team Win Northern League Promotion Match.
The combined mens and womens team won the Northern League Promotion playoff match at Cleckheaton, so will compete together in the first division next year. It was a spirited team performance, with athletes filling in where required to gain points for the club. The best individual male performance was probably young Lewis Tatt, who ran a New Club U17 400m Record of 51.4 secs. The women won 2 events through Angie Dickie in the 3000m and the 4 x 400m Relay.

5th September 2004. Vets team finish 13th in Leeds Country Way Relay.
The Mens Vets team had a disappointing result in this year's Leeds Country Way Relay. With several key members unavailable, and a couple of runners having an off day, they were disappointed to finish 13th team overall, and only 2nd Vets team this year. Race Results from Leeds City AC website

5th September 2004. New WYT&F Championships Record for Will Finelli in U13 High Jump.
At the end of season Championships of the WYT&F League at Cleckheaton the club had several winners, the best performance being by Will Finelli, who jumped a New Championship Record of 1.49m in the U13 Boys High Jump. Championship Results from Cleckheaton

31st August 2004. Aine Hoban Breaks Club 3000m Record.
Running in a mixed race at the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford, Aine won her race and ran a new PB and a New Club 3000m Record of 9 min 26.6 secs. Several of our girls ran fast 800m times and seasons bests.

29th August 2004. Combined Team 3rd in Northern Knockout Cup Final.
The combined mens and womens team finished third in the final at Cudworth, though some way behind Trafford and Sale. There were no male victories, but the women won 5 events through Zara Hohn (100m), Suzanne Roberts (Hammer), Laura Whittingham (Javelin), Tiffany Lyons (High Jump) and Fiona Westwood (Long Jump).

22nd August 2004. Several Athletes Representing Yorkshire and North of England.
Several club members were in action representing their county in the North of England Inter-Counties match at Cudworth. In the Senior Women's team were Aine Hoban (3000m), Naida Bromley (100mH & HJ), Fiona Westwood (LJ), Fiona Thomas (SP), and Laura Whittingham (JT), whilst Zara Hohn (100m) and Rachel Shaw (300m) were in the U17 team. Zara won the 100m in 12.2, just 0.2 secs off Diane Glazebrook's club record.
On the same day Chloe Beckett was chosen to represent the North of England in the U20 Inter-Area match at Ipswich in the Javelin.

17th August 2004. Charlene Snelgrove Breaks Club 800m Record yet again.
Running in a mixed race at the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford, Charlene trimmed her PB for the 4th time this season, running another New Club 800m Record of 2 min 03.71 secs.

15th August 2004. Zara Hohn Wins AAA U17 Hurdles Title in New Club Record time.
In the AAA U17 Championships at Birmingham Zara won the 80m Hurdles title, running a New Club U17 Record of 11.31s, a time that takes her to 2nd in the UK rankings. Zara has had a wonderful season, and her performances in the National Junior League at 100m, 200m and 100mH have seen her become top scorer in the Athletics Weekly Grand Prix for 2004.

8th August 2004. Records Galore at WYT&F League at Wakefield.
At the 7th and final WYT&F League meeting at Thornes Park there were no less than 6 New League Records including Mikaela Harrison equalling the U15 Girls 200m record of 26.0s. In the overall league points Wakefield's men were clear winners, with Sam Bucknall winning the individual U13 Boys title and Richard Higson-Blythe the Senior title. 5th August 2004. Team finish 2nd in the 7th Yorkshire Vets League race.
In the 7th league race at Pudsey the team finished 2nd behind league leaders Knavesmire. Steve Tibbs was first man home yet again in 3rd, and our other counters were Peter Young in 11th, Steve Wilkinson in 16th, and Mike Logan in 38th. The team remain in second place in the league, but Steve Tibbs has taken the overall lead in the individual championship. Results from YVAA.

31st Jul/1st Aug June 2004. Naida Bromley Competes for Great Britain in U20 Heptathlon.
Naida was selected to compete for the Great Britain U20 team in the Multi-Events International at Merignac, France, and finished eighth in a magnificent New Club U20 Heptathlon Record of 5,039 points. Her performances in the 7 disciplines were 100m Hurdles 15.24s/+0.0, High Jump 1.64m, Shot 10.57m, 200m 25.19s/+2.2, Long Jump 5.30m/+2.3, Javelin 38.55m, and 800m 2min 27.22s.

1st August 2004. Another Good Win in the Young Athletes League Division 1 East.
The team had a clear win in the Young Athletes League meeting at Grimsby, with many victories and good performances. Rachel Wilson was the star performer with a New Club U15G 75m Hurdles Record of 11.6s, and she and Joanna Hackney (U17G LJ 5.25m) won Athlete of the Match awards.

1st August 2004. Women's Team Promoted back to First Division of UK Womens League.
In the third and final UK Womens League meeting at Liverpool the girls had another good result, finishing third, but crucially ahead of Shaftsbury Barnet. So they return to the top flight with league leaders Woodford Green. There were excellent victories from Suzanne Roberts (HT) and Fiona Westwood (LJ), and top 3 finishes from Caroline Nutt (PV), Amy Freeman (400m), Aine Hoban (1500m), Penny Thackray (3000m), Laura Whittingham (JT) and Shelley Revitt (TJ).

31st July 2004. Another Victory in North of England League at Cudworth.
The combined mens and womens team won another close match in the division 2EC North of England League, to give them a clean sweep of four victories and the league title in that division. The team now take part in the Promotion Match at Cleckheaton on 11th September. Paul Rice again made good use of the senior competition to run a New Club U17 800m Record of 1 min 56.3s, and it was good to see John Fletcher back in winning form in the Long Jump.

25th July 2004. Junior Women finish Second Overall in National Junior League.
In the fourth and final match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division at Mansfield the girls put on another great team performance to finish second. The result means they have finished second overall in this league, and so have qualified for the national final in September where they should start as one of the favourites. Naida Bromley was our only 'A' string winner in the Shot Putt, but there were many fine second places including a New 4 x 100m Relay Club Record of 49.4s and a New 4 x 400m Relay Club Record of 4 min 03.3s.

21st July 2004. New WYT&F League Record for Will Finelli in U13 High Jump.
At the 6th WYT&F League meeting at South Leeds Will Finelli jumped a New League Record of 1.51m in the U13 Boys High Jump. The previous record was held by former club member Martyn Bernard, who this year has become Britain's top high jumper, so Will is obviously a talent to watch for for the future. Chris Price was also an impressive winner of the U17 Mens 800m, and Mikaela Harrison was a clear winner of the U15 Girls 200m and Long Jump. The men still lead, and the women still lie second overall after 6 meetings. Results from South Leeds.

18th July 2004. Steve Tibbs 2nd in Yorkshire Vets 10 Mile Championships.
Steve came 6th overall, and 2nd vet, in the Eccup 10 Mile road race, which incorporated the Yorkshire Vets 10 Mile Championships. With Stuart Bannister in 15th and Matthew Dodsworth in 47th the mens team came 4th. Stuart Anderson took 3rd in the O65 category. Results and Photos from Abbey Runners.

18th July 2004. Good Win for the Team in the Young Athletes League and New Club Record.
The team had a good win in the Young Athletes League meeting held at Thornes Park, with the highlight being, for the second time this season, a New U17 4 x 400m Club Record of 3m 38.4s for the team of Paul Rice, Tim Barry, Simon McMillan and Nathan Elliot. There were Grade 1 winning performances from Chloe Becket (DT), Tiffany Lyons (HJ) and Rachel Wilson (75mH) and Grade 2 victories for Nathan Elliot (1500m), Chris Price (3000m), Chloe Becket (JT), Mikaela Harrison (200) and Jessica Wilson (LJ), as well as many other fine performances.
Team Result :- Wakefield 396 , Rotherham 314 , Bingley 311 , Chester-le-street 254.

18th July 2004. Combined Senior team 4th in Golden Jubilee Cup Semi-Final.
The combined mens and womens team had a slightly disappointing result in this semi-final match at Derby. With a shortage of distance runners the men could only finish sixth, and with the women 3rd their combined scores gave them 4th overall. Rob Lee was the mens best performer with 3rd in the Triple Jump, whilst the women had many fine performances and one victory from Aine Hoban in the 3000m.

17th July 2004. Top Class Performances from Suzanne Roberts and Charlene Snelgrove.
Competing in the Loughborough EAA Permit Meeting Suzanne finished 2nd in the high quality Hammer competition, throwing a New Club Record of 61.48m. This moves her up to 3rd in this season's UK rankings, but still 6m short of the Olympic qualifying distance.
In the BMC/Nike Grand Prix races at Cardiff Charlene had another fine 800m run in 2m 04.41s.

14th July 2004. Team finish 3rd in the 6th Yorkshire Vets League race.
In the 6th league race at Esholt the team finished 3rd behind league leaders Knavesmire and hosts Bingley. Steve Tibbs was again our first man home in 5th, and our other scorers were Steve Wilkinson in 14th, Peter Young in 18th, and Tony Audsley who managed to get to the start on time and finish 33rd. 11th July 2004. Suzanne Roberts and Charlene Snelgrove in top 6 at AAA Championships.
At the AAA Championships and Olympic Trials at Manchester Suzanne and Charlene were both close to their best in finishing 5th in the Hammer and 6th in the 800m. In fact Charlene was slightly quicker in the heats, running another New Club 800m Record of 2 min 03.87 secs. Sarah Beevers also did extremely well to finish 11th in th 3000m Steeplechase. 11th July 2004. Vets Team finish 8th in Yorkshire Vets Road Relays.
In the highest quality field this event has had in recent years, the Mens O40 Vets team finished in 8th. With 2 of the 4 first choice runners missing they struggled against other teams who were at full strength, but it was still a creditable result. 9/10th July 2004. Silver Medal for Laura Whittingham in English Schools Championships.
At the English Schools T & F Championships at Gateshead several club members were representing West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, and competed with distinction. Laura was the only club member this year to win a medal, coming 2nd in the Javelin, but other athletes reaching the final of their events were :- Senior Girls Lucy O'Gorman 7th 3000m, Alison Hackney 7th 400mH, Laura Whittingham 2nd Javelin, Debbie Collinson 8th Javelin, Intermediate Girls Zara Hohn 4th 80mH, Chloe Becket 8th Discus, Junior Girls Mikaela Harrison 7th 200m, Intermediate Boys Nathan Elliot 8th 1500m. 5th July 2004. Chris Kirk Selected for World Junior Championships.
As the only U20 with the Long Jump qualifying distance of 7.55m, we congratulate Chris for being selected to represent Great Britain in the World Junior Championships at Grossetto in Italy. He has however been suffering from a hamstring injury in recent weeks, so we all hope he is fit in time to compete. Team news from UK Athletics

4th July 2004. 3rd Victory in North of England League at Grantham.
In a close match the combined mens and womens team had another win in the division 2EC North of England League, and now have a clear lead in that division. Shirley Griffiths was the star performer for the women with victories in the 800m, 1500m & 3000m, whilst for the men Paul Rice ran a New Club U17 400m Record of 51.7s.
Team Result :- Wakefield 393, Lincoln Wellington 387.5, Boston & District 369.5, Doncaster & Stainforth 367, Barnsley 293, Kingston-U-Hull 113.

4th July 2004. Ladies finish 3rd in Second UK Womens League Meeting.
The Wakefield team had another good result at Coventry, but were beaten by Shaftsbury Barnet this time. Although level on points they now move ahead of Wakefield on match points, and the team must beat them in the final match to gain promotion behind league leaders Woodford Green. Caroline Nutt again won the 'A' string Pole Vault, and Aine Hoban had a fine victory in the 1500m, as well as winning the 'B' string 800m. Other fine performances included good second places from Amy Freeman in the 400m, Penny Thackray in the 3000m and Suzanne Roberts not far from her PB in the Hammer. Once again Heptathlete Naida Bromley scored well in several events.

3rd July 2004. Zara Hohn and Chris Kirk compete in U20 International.
After her fantastic performances in recent weeks, which have seen her shoot to the top of the U17 rankings at 100m Hurdles, Zara was invited to run as a guest in the U20 International match against Australia at Manchester. She ran another fast time of 14.4s. Chris was returning from injury and was some way below his best with 6.81m in the Long Jump.
