Skipton Open XC Meeting

Report by: Martin Cunnane

October 1999 - Skipton

Wakefield Harriers had eight youngsters in action at the first cross country open of the year in Skipton.

And despite failing to gain an individual medal there were some promising performances and a team gold medal-winning effort to send the Harriers supporters home in good heart.

The team gold was earned by the U15 girls' quartet of Carly Wright, Samantha Colley, Amy Fozzard and Lucy Martin who packed well to finish 5th, 8th, 10th and 12th respectively in the 42-strong field. All four athletes coped well with the atrocious underfoot conditions to take team honours by a comfortable margin.

Jaydene Wright also performed with great promise in the U11 girls' section, staying on well in the ankle deep mud to finish a commendable 4th of the 50 participants. And she looks sure to progress further with experience.

In the U13 girls' race, Jan Faulkner stayed on to finish 18th overall and Abi Gowland filled 24th spot in the 51-strong race. Both look capable of improving given firmer ground conditions.
