North of England AA
Combined Events Championships 1999

Report by: Martin Cunnane

22 - 23rd May 1999 - Hexham Stadium, Hexham

Amy Fozzard Two of Wakefield Harriers U15 girls provided medal winning performances in the recent North of England Multi Events Championships at Hexham.

Ruth Laybourn collected a well-deserved silver medal in the pentathlon with respective performances of 12.9 secs, 1.45m, 4.92m, 8.20m and 2 mins 52.9 secs in the 75m hurdles, high jump long jump, shot and 800m.

Thirteen-year-old Amy Fozzard made it a medal double for the Harriers by collecting a hard-earned bronze with her respective performances on the day being 13.7 secs, 1.39m, 4.90m, 7.49m and 2 mins 37.9 secs in the 75m hurdles, high jump, long jump shot putt and 800m.

Laybourn, who looks certain to retain her overall individual title in the West Yorkshire Track and Field League, is an improving athlete and should develop into a more than useful junior.

Fozzard meanwhile, who won a bag full of multi-events medals in last year's U13s events including the Scottish indoor and outdoor pentathlon titles, has another year in the age group. She will be a hot favourite in next year's major combined event competitions.
