National Cross Country Relays

Report by: Bryan Murray

November 1999 - Berryhill, Mansfield

Wakefield Harriers juniors were among athletes from all over the country contesting the National Cross Country Relays at Berryhill, Mansfield. It was the tenth annual running of the event and boasted near perfect conditions.

The U13 girls' squad consisted of Jasmin Kerry, Abi Gowland and Laura Teasdale who competed in the 3x2k race.

Kerry showed her undoubted talent with a good lead-off run among the 60 starters that saw her among the front runners by the halfway mark.

Gowland, improving with each race, continued the fine start and Teasdale, the youngest of the three but looking stronger with each outing, held her position well to bring the team home in 26th overall.

Times: Kerry 8 mins 20 secs, Gowland 8 mins 50 secs, Teasdale 9 mins 10 secs.

The U15 girls' A and B squads were looking for another encouraging performance on the back of several weeks of hard training.

Zoe Gowland was the lead-off runner. She fought hard for pole position among the 24 runners and held 12th position until a breakaway group put a 20-metre lead between the bunches. Gowland gave a final surge to hand over in 20th place in 7 mins 56 secs.

Samantha Colley set off in hot pursuit of the leaders but found herself among a talented bunch of second-leg runners. She returned a time of 8 mins 09 secs.

Last leg runner Carly Wright, still in 20th position, confirmed her early-season promise by, passing six athletes on the 2000m course to bring the team home in 14th place overall in a combined 23 mins 50 secs, 1 mins 40 secs behind winners Bedford and County AC.

The B squad of Fozzard, Martin and Hall ran superbly, to claim 24th overall. Times were 8 mins 05 secs, 8 mins 26 secs and 8 mins 46 secs respectively.

The senior women's A team finished a superb seventh with Shirley Griffiths (10 mins 25 secs), Penny Thackray (10 mins 27 secs), who's off to Japan to represent Great Britain in the Ekiden races shortly, and new club athlete Catherine Bacon

The senior B team finished in the top half of the large field in 34th place. Team members Eileen Twigg, Yvette Arthur and Linda Walker recorded respective times of 12 mins 09 secs, 12 mins 58 secs and 12 mins 26 secs.

The fastest lap time of the day went to H Yelling of Borough of Hounslow in 9 mins 50 secs.
