Heartbreak Hill
Cross Country Open 1999

Report by: Martin Cunnane

21st February 1999 - Scunthorpe

Four Wakefield Harriers U11s cross country runners were in action at the Scunthorpe Harriers-hosted Heartbreak Hill Cross Country Open last Sunday where they picked up team bronze.

All four Wakefield youngsters acquitted themselves extremely well around the Foxhills playing fields circuit. The first three home packed well to pick up team bronze.

Hull Spartan's Samantha Bloor led the field home from the start of the race and, staying on sturdily, clocked 7 mins 07 secs for the 1,800m trip. She had a ten second cushion over runner-up L Fothergill of Hallamshire, who just got the better of Louth AC representative Gemma Rennison in a sprint finish for the minor placings.

Wakefield's foursome all travelled in the mid-field to around the halfway marker when novice runner Terry Bedford made a forward move and, travelling strongly, had soon started to reel in the leaders.

Bedford kept up the push all the way to the line and finishing strongest of all, gained a highly encouraging fourth place overall in 7 mins 20 secs, just 13 seconds behind the winner.

Second Wakefield counter, Laura Teesdale, also made good late headway, moving up six places over the final 500m to finish a commendable seventh in 7 mins 38 secs, and with Katie Shepherd claiming 20th in 8 mins 12 secs, the Harriers youngsters earned third team prize behind Hull Spartan and host club Scunthorpe. Wakefield's only other starter, Samantha Swain, finished 31 st in 8 mins 56 secs.
