This third & final match in the UK Womens League Division 2 at Coventry was a very close match indeed, with just 7 points covering the 4 clubs between 4th & 7th. But we were the ones who ended up 7th, so didn't quite get the result we needed, and end up dropping a division. We finished 7th in the league, with the same match points as Havering & Mayesbrook, but with fewer individual points. Just 2 more points on the day would have kept us up !
Individually Kelly Johnson scored good points with 2nd in the 800m in 2:12.4 & 2nd in the 'B' 400m in 58.5s, as did Helen Singleton with 3rd in the 1500m in 4:32.7 & winning the 'B' 800m in 2:17.0. 31st Jul 2010. Club Record at Fourth Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 1.
At the fourth and final round of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Sports City in Manchester the combined mens & womens team needed a good result to stay in the divison, and although they did very well to finish 3rd, and just 3 points off 2nd place, it wasn't quite enough. This division was so tight that 3 clubs tied on 3rd place with 13 match points, including Wakefield, but we had the lowest individual points total of those teams, and thus finished 5th overall.
There were however some excellent performances, including a New Club Record of 4 mins 21.7 secs in the 4 x 400m Relay. The team of Marcus Nixey, Craig Simpson, Andrei Pobischan & Nathaniel Davis beat the previous record set 2 years ago by 0.7s, and the same quartet also ran an impressive 43.1s in the 4 x 100m. Andrei was clearly on top form after running a PB of 48.9s in the individual race, as was U17 Rebecca Watts, winning the 100m in 12.5s and the 200m in 25.2s. Richard Gayle & Sarah Drake won the Hammer events with 42.52m & 44.38m respectively, and the girls also won the 4 x 100m in 50.9s. In other events grade 2 performances were recorded by Leanne Barraclough (Javelin 36.75m) & Mark Lindsay (Javelin 52.95m), and multi-eventer Naida Bromley was close with 10.83m in the Shot, one of 5 events she competed in.
There were many other good performances, and this team deserved to stay in division 1!
Match Result :- Blackburn H 368, City of Manchester 323, Wakefield D. H&AC 320, Preston H 303, Blackpool Wyre & Fylde 301, City of York 285. Meeting Results.
There are some photos from the meeting available from Photo Gallery from fryer-foto.

30th Jul 2010. Disappointment for Emily Freeman at European Championships.
There was disappointment for Emily Freeman at the European Championships in Barcelona when she failed to make the final of the 200m. Last year she was the leading European 200m runner, topping the rankings, and being the only European to make the final of the World Championships. This year she has been hampered by a succession of injuries, so never got back to top form, and after qualifying for the semi-final of the 200m with a confident third place finish, she went on run a season's best of 23.21s to finish 5th in her semi, and just fail to qualify for the final by 0.01s!
Emily will then have had further disappointment watching her team mates failing to make the final of the 4 x 100m relay, where she would probably have been asked to run. Nevertheless still a great achievement for Emily, and once again she has been a credit to the club.
Read report of fourth day from UK Athletics.

29th Jul 2010. Results of Third Reindeer Romp Off-Road Race.

29th Jul 2010. Martyn Bernard Wins European Bronze Medal in Barcelona.

Martyn Bernard had the most significant success of his career so far by winning a magnificent bronze medal, clearing 2.29m at the first attempt in the High Jump Final of the European Championships in Barcelona. The competition started in atrociously wet conditions, and Martyn gambled correctly by entering the competition at a height later than anyone else, when the weather had improved, but in clearing it he then put himself in the driving seat when only four jumpers went on to clear 2.29m, with him being the only one to clear that height first time. He then had two excruciatingly close failures at a new PB of 2.31m, a height which two Russians cleared, leaving Martyn with the bronze medal to add to his growing collection. A fantastic result, of which the whole club and the City of Wakefield will be proud.
See Martyn in action from BBC Sport , and read report of third day from UK Athletics.

28th Jul 2010. Sixth Round of WYT&F League at Leeds.

The final starts at 5.30pm on Thursday, so we wish him well. Meanwhile Emily Freeman will start her campaign in the 200m on Friday, the first round heats being at 11.20am.

4th Jul 2010. Third Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 1.

With many of the senior women competing in the UK Women's League, several U17 athletes stepped in, and U17 Sally Smith was the club’s only ‘A’ string winner.
