2010 Club News April - June

27th Jun 2010. Martyn Bernard Wins UK High Jump Title with 2.28m.


With last year's UK Champions Emily Freeman & Charlene Thomas unable to defend their 200m & 1500m titles because of injuries, it was left to Olympic Finallist Martyn Bernard to bring glory to the club this year at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham. He won the UK High Jump title in a season's best of 2.28m, ahead of a good quality field which included fellow Olympian Tom Parsons, to stake his claim for a place in the GB team for Barcelona. Zara Hohn was just outside the medals with 4th place in the 100m Hurdles in 13.61s. Meeting Results.

27th Jun 2010. 3rd Victory in Humber Division of the National Junior League.
The club had another win in the third match of the Humber Division of the National Junior League at Herringthorpe Stadium in Rotherham, although by a slender margin this time. Best performance was by U17 Ben Holmes, awarded Man of the Match after winning the High Jump with a new PB of 1.96m, a jump which currently ranks him 10th in the UK in his age group. Team mate Wil Mulroy equalled his PB of 1.90m to win the 'B' event, for maximum points in that event. U17 Rebecca Watts also recorded a grade 1 performance, winning the 100m in 12.3s, and grade 2s were recorded by Lucy Holmes in the Shot with 10.16m, and U17 Daniel O'Connor with 37.73m in the Discus, not far behind Craig Westerman's winning throw of 39.22m.

27th Jun 2010. Personal Best Half Marathon by Aine Hoban in New Zealand.
Aine Hoban showed she is still running well during her stay in New Zealand, by running a new PB of 80 mins 21 secs at the Harbour Capital Half Marathon at Wellington. She was first woman to finish in the race, and her time is the 3rd best ever by a Wakefield lady, after Julie Briscoe's club record of 76 mins 46 secs and Penny Thackray's best of 79 mins 28 secs.

27th Jun 2010. Results of Wilkinson Pontefract Open Meeting.
Pontefract AC successfully hosted their first open meeting at Thornes Park Stadium, at which there were some good performances from the younger Wakefield athletes. U11 Aderinsola Olaleru had a good day, winning her first 600m in an impressive 2m 04.9s, as well as the long jump with 4.02m. Declan Sheehan won both the U13 sprints in PB times of 13.2s & 27.1s for the 100m & 200m, and Sam Convery & Sophie Woollin won their U15 800m races in PBs of 2m 19.7s & 2m 25.9s. Meeting Results

24th Jun 2010. Results of Second Reindeer Romp Off-Road Race.
There was another good turnout of 110 runners for the second race of the Reindeer Romp Series of off-road races. John Mason was again our first runner home, finishing 4th ahead of Chris Price and Chris Ward. Young Annabelle Mason again showed the ladies the way home, ahead of Julie Greenwood and Jasmine Kerry. 20th Jun 2010. Emily Freeman Competes for GB in European Team Championships.
Emily Freeman was selected to run in the 200m and the 4 x 100m relay for the Aviva Great Britain and NI team at the European Team Championships in Bergen in Norway. Although not at her very best she still came an excellent 5th in the 200m in 23.34s, and helped the sprint relay team to 4th in 43.77s. The British came an excellent 2nd. 20th Jun 2010. Harriers Win 3rd Round of Young Athletes League at Derby.
In the third fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League, at Moorways Stadium in Derby, the club had a good victory, which now takes them into 2nd place in the division. It was a good team effort all round, and there were grade 1 performances from Ben Holmes & Tom Leyshon in the U17M High Jump with 1.90m & 1.85m respectively, and grade 2 performances from Laura Robson (U17W 100m 12.6s), Bethany Sharp (U17W 300m 42.1s), Daniel O'Connor (U17M DT 39.65m), Abigail Roberts (U15G PV 2.75m) & Declan Sheehan (U13B 200m 27.4s). Declan also showed his versatility by running a New Club U13 75m Hurdles Record of 14.2 seconds.

16th Jun 2010. 4th Round of WYT&F League at Wakefield.
The club hosted the 4th round of the West Yorkshire T&F League at Thornes Park Stadium. There was another league record from Halifax's Kate Wasyliw, and Harriers victories for Zoe Kerins (U15 800m 2 mins 26.87s), Hannah Yates (U17W Discus 27.39m), Faye Mitchell (SW 200m 27.22s), Dylan Roberts (U11B LJ 3.85m) & Matthew O'Connor (U17M 800m 2 mins 04.10s). 16th Jun 2010. Yorkshire Veterans Grand Prix League Race Three.
There was just the club's over 50 stalwarts competing at the third race in the Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix series at Pudsey. Peter McNamara was again our first runner home in 11th place out of over 200 finishers, and won the over 50 category. Race Results.

13th Jun 2010. Thirty Harriers Run in Bradford Millenium Way Relay.
As last year the club managed to turn out 3 full teams of 10 to compete in the Bradford Millenium Way Relay, and had some creditable results. The 'vets' team came 11th, the 'mixed' team 18th and the 3rd ‘open’ team 29th out of the 48 competing teams. The five girls in the mixed team all did exceptionally well, and the team were 2nd in their category. Results in Excel from St.Bedes AC.

12th/13th Jun 2010. Harriers Win 4 Medals at Northern Athletics T&F Championships.
At the Northern Athletics Senior & U20 T&F Championships at Sport City, Manchester, the club didn’t have a vintage year, but still had several athletes competing, with four returning home with medals. Marcus Nixey won silver in the U20M 400m in 49.52s, as did Will Mulroy who came 2nd in the U20M High Jump with 1.85m. Kelly Johnson added to her medal collection with bronze in the SW 800m in 2m 11.9s & Craig Westerman also came 3rd in the U20M Discus with 38.36m. 12th Jun 2010. Emily Freeman Competes in Diamond League Meeting in New York, USA.
Emily Freeman was invited to compete in the 200m race at the IAAF Diamond League Meeting at New York in the USA, and in a top class race that was won by Veronica Campbell, just ahead of Alison Felix, Emily finished a creditable 6th in 23.37 secs. Race Results.

12th Jun 2010. Zara Hohn Competes in Europe Twice in a Week.
Zara Hohn had two trips to Europe to compete in international meetings in the 100m Hurdles. At the International Flanders Meeting at Oordegem in Belgium she finished 3rd in 13.65s, and at the Atletica EAP Meeting at Geneva in Switzerland she finished 5th in 13.59s.

12th Jun 2010. West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships.
At the West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships at Cleckheaton, the club had many athletes competing with distinction for their school districts, with Ben Holmes perhaps being the star performer with an excellent new PB of 1.95m in the Senior Boys High Jump. Other club members did exceptionally well too, with victories in most age groups from Zoe Kerins (IG 200m 27.08s), Grace Eyles (IG 300m 41.05s), Sally Smith (IG 800m 2m 20.41s), Samantha Brook (IG 300m Hurdles 45.58s), Ryan Hartley (SB 2000m SC 7m 38.54s), Will Mulroy (SB HJ 1.85m), Beth Porter (IG Long Jump 4.91m), Hannah Yates (IG Discus 29.21m) & Craig Westerman (SB Discus 38.65m). 11th Jun 2010. Julie Briscoe Selected to Run for England in Toronto Marathon.
As a result of her wonderful run in the Edinburgh Marathon, where she was less than 3 minutes off the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games, Julie Briscoe has been selected to run for an England team in the Toronto Marathon in October. This is a marvellous achievement, and our congratulations to Julie on her first international selection.

8th Jun 2010. Emily Freeman Selected for GB European Team Championships.
After having easily been Britain's number one 200m runner last year Emily Freeman has been selected to run the 200m for the Aviva Great Britain and NI team at the European Team Championships in Bergen, Norway, on the weekend of 19th/20th June. As last year she is also in the squad for the 4 x 100m relay, and we send her our congratulations on her latest international selection. Details of GB team from UK Athletics.

6th Jun 2010. Fast Road 10k from Paul Lockwood.
Paul Lockwood has had his first couple of races this year, and after warming up with a useful 15 mins 51 secs for 5k when coming 4th in the Middlesbrough Tees Pride 5K, he came 2nd in the Woodhall Spa 10K in 32 mins 36 secs, a new PB which takes him to the top of this year's club rankings. 6th Jun 2010. Women's Team Finish 4th in First UK Women's League Match.
The club hosted the first match of the UK Women's League Division 2 at Thornes Park Stadium, and welcomed some of Britain's top clubs from as far away as London and Glasgow. The divisions in the league have been renamed this year so now there is a premier league, 1st division, 2nd & 3rd divisons, so the club is effectively in the 3rd tier, and amongst the top 24 clubs in the country.
The team finished a creditable 4th, and amongst some good performances was Helen Singleton coming 2nd in a quality 800m race in 2m 11.99s, which she followed with another 2nd in the 1500m, Sarah Bostwick winning the 2000m Steeplechase in 7m 31.23s, Sarah Drake finishing 2nd in the Hammer with 46.83m, Tiffany Lyons equal first in the High Jump with 1.55m, and Caroline Nutt 2nd in the Pole Vault with 3.00m.

6th Jun 2010. Martyn Bernard Clears 2.25m in First Competition of the Season.
Martyn Bernard took part in his first competition of the season at the Internationales Hochsprung Meeting at Viersen in Germany, and finished 3rd, clearing an encouraging 2.25m, and beating fellow internationals Tom Parsons and Samson Oni. Meeting Results.

5th Jun 2010. Second Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 1.
At the second round of the Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Blackburn the combined mens & womens team came 4th in another close match, a result which leaves them in 2nd position after the first two matches. Marcus Nixey ran a fine 49.6s in the 400m, and Mark Lindsay was impressive in the Javelin with a throw of 54.59m. The High Jumpers were in excellent form, with U20 Will Mulroy jumping a PB of 1.90m, and Tom Leysham clearing 1.85m. Top performers for the women were Naida Bromley with her winning Javelin throw of 40.92m, and Sarah Drake who won the Hammer with 44.11m. Regan Wright won a close 200m, and the ladies also won a close 4 x 100m relay in 51.4s.

1st Jun 2010. Yorkshire Veterans Grand Prix League Race Two.
There was a good turnout of Harriers at the second race in the Yorkshire Vets AA Grand Prix series at Kirkstall. Peter McNamara was our first runner home in 11th place out of over 200 finishers, and the the 2nd over 50 to finish. Richard West also ran well to finish 20th, and Pat Wood was our first lady home. 1st Jun 2010. Some Good Middle Distance Times at Stretford.
At the Trafford Grand Prix Open meeting at Stretford several club members were competing. There were grade 2 performances from Kelly Johnson, who ran a season's best of 2m 10.74s in the 800m, and the improving U17 Sally Smith, who ran a personal best of 4m 43.33s in the 1500m. Meeting Results.

30th/31st May 2010. Zara Hohn Wins Inter Counties Championships Again.
Two members of Wakefield Harriers were selected to compete for Yorkshire in the CAU Inter Counties Championships at Bedford, helping Yorkshire win the women's competition, and the men to 3rd place. This was a great result for our own Fiona Lancaster, in her first year as Yorkshire team manager. Zara Hohn ran a season's best of 13.47s when winning the 100m Hurdles for the second year running, and also ran 12.35s in the heats of the 100m. U20 Jack Hallas was also selected to run in the Mile, and ran an excellent race to finish 2nd against senior opposition in a new PB of 4m 08.96s. Download results in pdf

30th May 2010. Charlene Thomas Beats World 1500m Champion Jamal in the Netherlands.
Our World Championship runner Charlene Thomas had her first 1500m outing of the season, at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting at Hengalo, in the Netherlands. She came 8th in a top class field in 4m 10.31s, just ahead of World Champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal, which is a major scalp for her. Meeting Results

29th/30th May 2010. Harriers Win Two Gold Medals at Northern U17/U15 Champs.
At the Northern Athletics U15 & U17 Championships at Leigh the club had several athletes competing, and won two gold medals and several minor medals, with two new club records being set. Best performance was by Samantha Brook, who won the U17W 300m Hurdles in a New Club Record of 44.99s, beating Naida Bromley's 8 year old record. Abigail Roberts also won gold in the U15G Pole Vault with 2.85m. Daniel O'Connor won silver in the U17M Discus with a New Club Record of 42.74m, beating Craig Westerman's record from last year, and other Harriers to win medals were Sally Smith (2nd U17W 800m 2m 16.90s), Hannah Yates (2nd U17W Discus 28.80m) & Thomas Leyshon (3rd U17M High Jump 1.70m). 29th May 2010. Fast Times from Middle Distance Stars at Manchester.
At the BMC Nike Grand Prix meeting at Sports City in Manchester some of the club’s leading middle distance runners put in some good performances. In the 800m races Jack Hallas ran 1m 52.23s, Sam Bucknall improved his PB to 1m 56.82s & Kelly Johnson ran 2m 15.44s, whilst in the 1500m Helen Singleton was close to her best with 4m 27.82s in the 1500m. 27th May 2010. Results of First Reindeer Romp Off-Road Race.
There was another good turnout of over 100 runners for the first of Tony Audsley's popular Reindeer Romp Series of off-road races, from the Reindeer Inn at Overton. First Harrier home was John Mason in 3rd place, and with Chris Ward 7th and Pete McNamara 14th the men just won the team race. John's daughter Annabell, even though she is only an U13, made it a family double by being first lady home, and leading Jasmine Kerry and Julie Greenwood to a team 123. 26th May 2010. Third Round of WYT&F League at Wakefield.
The third round of the West Yorkshire T&F League, which the club hosted at Thornes Park Stadium, saw two more league records being broken. Chris Price was our only male winner in the 1500m in 4m 14.60s, and we had two victories in the ladies events, by Grace Eyles (U17W 100m 12.77s), and Lucy Holmes (SW 100m in 13.03s). After the first three meetings Wakefield are leading overall in both the mens and womens competitions.

23rd May 2010. Julie Briscoe Breaks Club Marathon Record at Edinburgh.


After having been thwarted by a serious foot injury two years ago, Julie Briscoe finally made her long awaited debut in the Marathon. On a very hot day she finished an amazing 13th overall and 2nd lady in the Edinburgh Marathon in a New Club Record time of 2 hrs 41 mins 31 secs. Indeed she was leading the ladies for most of the race, and was on schedule for well under 2 hrs 40 mins, before losing ground in the later stages. However it was a wonderful run, and Julie now has the full set of club road records from 10 miles up to the marathon in the popular distances. Craig Orr also completed the race in 3 hrs 47 mins. 23rd May 2010. Zara Hohn Competes for England at the Loughborough International.
Zara Hohn was selected to compete for the England team at the Loughborough International, and ran a season's best of 13.50s in the 100m Hurdles, behind an in-form Jessica Ennis. Charlene Thomas was also invited to compete at the meeting and renewed her rivalry from last year with Hannah England, and was close to her best when finishing 2nd in 2 mins 02.56s in the 800m. Jack Hallas ran a season’s best of 1 min 52.53s in his 800m, and Andrei Pobischan competed for Loughborough and ran 50.19s for 400m. Meeting Results.

23rd May 2010. Another Victory in 2nd Match of the National Junior League.
The club had another good win in the second match of the Humber Division of the National Junior League at Sheffield. Top grade performances were achieved by Marcus Nixey (400m 49.9s), Craig Westerman (Shot 12.20m & Discus 39.24m), Rebecca Watts (100m 12.4s & 200m 25.6s), Samantha Brooke (400m Hurdles 67.0s) & Kirby Akindeinde (Triple Jump 10.66m). There were also double victories again in the men’s events in the High Jump, where William Mulroy & Tom Leysham both cleared 1.80m, and a good win from Sam Bucknall (800m 2m 01.5s).

18th May 2010. Fast Times from Middle Distance Stars at Stretford.
At the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford some of the club’s top middle distance runners showed good early season form. In the BMC 1500m race Jack Hallas ran a new PB of 3m 48.49s, which moves him up to 3rd on the club all time list, behind Darren Spawforth and Richard Hollings, and he looks set to break Richard’s long standing U20 club record this year. In the 800m races Charlene Thomas opened her season with an impressive 2m 02.63s, less than a second outside her club record, and U17 runners Matthew O'Connor & Sally Smith ran PBs of 2m 02.61s & 2m 13.82s respectively, and Sam Bucknall showed improved form, running 1m 58.60s. Chris Price was another to open his track season with a new PB, running a fine 8m 56.48s for 3000m, and U17 thrower Daniel O'Connor threw the Discus an excellent 40.46m. Meeting Results.

16th May 2010. First Outing for Emily Freeman at Great Manchester Games.
At the televised Great Manchester Games, Emily Freeman had her first outing of the season against some world class opposition, and ran 11.62s for 100m, and 23.29s for 200m on the temporary track laid in the streets. In the 10k road race Helen Singleton was invited to compete for the North of England, and came 27th in the women’s race in 36m 54s.

16th May 2010. Second Round of Young Athletes League Northern Premier East Division.
In the second fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League, which the club hosted at Thornes Park Stadium, the team had another good all round performance, and again finished 2nd, this time to Gateshead.
The highlight was a New Club U17 Ladies 4 x 300m Record of 2 mins 52.6 secs, by Olivia Radcliffe, Laura Robson, Bethany Sharp & Samantha Brook. Top individual performer was Ben Holmes, winning the U17M High Jump with a grade 1 height of 1.89m, with Thomas Leyshon coming 2nd with 1.80m.
Grade 2 performances were achieved by Rebecca Watts & Grace Eyles, who both ran 12.6s in the U17W 100m, and again in the 200m where Grace won in 25.8s ahead of Rebecca in 25.9s, and also by Laura Robson (U17W 300m in 42.0s), Samantha Brook (U17W 300mH in 46.6s), Abigail Roberts (U15 Pole Vault 2.60m) & Daniel O’Connor (U17M Discus 39.41m).

15th May 2010. Over 50 Men Finish 11th in National Masters Road Relays.


The club entered an over 50 men's team for the first time in the National Masters Road Relays at Sutton Park, and did very well to finish 11th in the country, and first club home from Yorkshire. Paul Hallas got them off to a flying start with an excellent run of 16:15, which turned out to be 9th fastest time of the day. Then after fine runs from Pete McNamara (17:14) and Dave Brailsford (17:49) the team were in 4th, just outside the medals. However as expected, they were unable to keep up such a high position, but Richard West (18:21), Peter Young (19:13) & Steve Wilkinson (19:09) all had solid runs to bring the team home in 11th. 8th/9th May 2010. 9 Gold Medals at the Yorkshire Track & Field Championships.
The club as usual had a good showing at the Yorkshire Championships at the Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, and came away with a good haul of medals. Grace Eyles was just a few hundredths of a second from the club U17 300m record when taking gold in 40.59s, and she also won a bronze medal in the 100m. Sally Smith was another from the club’s talented U17 women’s squad to win a gold and a bronze, in the 1500m & 800m respectively.
The club only had two senior winners this year, with Kelly Johnson taking the women's 800m in 2m 12.12s, and Lynsie Whyke the Triple Jump with 10.21m, but there were also Yorkshire gold medals for Kirby Akindeinde (U20W Triple Jump 10.70m), Grace Eyles (U17W 300m 40.59s), Sally Smith (U17W 1500m 4m 47.38s), Abigail Roberts (U15G Pole Vault 2.70m), William Mulroy (U20M High Jump 1.85m), James Furlong (U15B High Jump 1.65m) & Benjamin Read (U13B 800m 2m 24.30s). 5th May 2010. Second Round of WYT&F League at Cleckheaton.
The second round of the West Yorkshire T&F League at Cleckheaton saw two league records being broken, and some decent performances from Wakefield athletes. There were no Grade 1 or 2 performances this time, but there were wins in the younger age groups for Dylan Roberts (U11B LJ 3.67m), Sophie Woollin (U15G 800m 2 mins 27.89s) & Grace Eyles (U17L 200m 26.94s)

3rd May 2010. Wakefield Ladies Dominate Rothwell 10k Road Race.
In the Rothwell 10k Road Race Helen Singleton won a close race to take the ladies prize in a time of 36:51, and she was well supported by Sarah Beevers 4th in 38:15 and Jasmine Kerry 9th in 41:08, to clinch the ladies team prize. Julie Greenwood was not far behind, and was first home in the F35 category in 41:21. In the mens race our top vets were in fine form, with new recruit John Convery first home in 5th overall, and easily first M45 vet, in the very impressive time of 33:33. He was followed by M50 vet Paul Hallas who ran 35:38 to finish 27th, and M35 vet Neil Dutton who was 44th in 36:59, completing the mens team who finished 4th. Race Results from ukresults.net

1st-3rd May 2010. Zara Hohn Wins BUCS Championships Again.
Representing her Sheffield Hallam University Zara Hohn defended her 100m Hurdles title at the British Universities Championships, in a time 13.75 secs. Several other Harriers were also competing for their universities, and amongst them Chiedu Ufodiama had a good weekend, with good performances in the Discus (PB 40.07m) and Shot (11.23m). 2nd May 2010. Harriers In Action on the Fells.
Our two fell running specialists Martin Green and Neil Penn competed with distinction in the Crowden Horseshoe 8 mile fell race, with 1700ft of climbing. They had clearly recovered well from the previous week's Three Peaks race, as Martin came 6th in 1hr 8mins and Neil 7th in 1hr 9mins out of about 150 competitors.

2nd May 2010. First Round of Young Athletes League Northern Premier East Division.
In the opening fixture of the Northern Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League at South Leeds Stadium, the team had a good all round performance, and narrowly lost the match to host club Leeds City. Abigail Roberts equalled her U15 and U17 Pole Vault Club Record with her winning jump of 2.90m, a Grade 1 performance, and Grade 2 performances were achieved by Grace Eyles (U17W 100m 12.6s & 300m 41.6s), Declan Sheehan (U13B 100m 13.3s) and Thomas Leyshon (U17M HJ 1.83m).

1st May 2010. First Round of Mens & Womens Northern League Division 1.
The club successfully hosted the first round of Northern Mens & Womens League Division 1 at Thornes Park Stadium, and in a close match came second to City of York. The highlight of the meeting was a new Northern League record of 64.39m in the women's Hammer from Blackburn's Sophie Hitchon, which will have been a good inspiration for Sarah Drake who came 2nd with a fine 44.32m. There were some good performances from Wakefield athletes, and excellent 'A' & 'B' string doubles were achieved by Helen Singleton & Sarah Beevers in the 1500m, and by Naida Bromley & Lucy Holmes in the Shot, Lucy's 10.22m being a grade 2 performance for an U20. It was good to see Naida back competing again, and she also did well in the Javelin, coming 2nd with 36.43m. The ladies also won an exciting 4 x 400m relay. Nathaniel Davies was our only men's 'A' string winner with 11.5s in the 100m, and the best event for the men was the High Jump, where Tom Leysham & William Mulroy both cleared 1.80m again.

25th Apr 2010. Victory in First Match of Humber Division of the National Junior League.
The club had a good start to their campaign in the Humber Division of the National Junior League, winning the first match at Scunthorpe. There were double victories in the mens' events in the High Jump, where William Mulroy & Tom Leysham both cleared 1.80m, and in the 2000m S/C, where Tom Coney & Ryan Hartley scored maximum points. For the women Kirby Akindeinde & Bethany Porter had a double win in the Long Jump, with Kirby also winning the Triple Jump with a fine 10.65m. The ladies also won both relays.

25th Apr 2010. Sally Smith Competes in the London Mini Marathon.
Sally Smith competed for Yorkshire & Humberside at the London Mini Marathon, and was delighted to come 22nd out of 136 runners, & 2nd Yorks & Humber girl. At 15 years old she was well at the lower end of the 15-17 age group.

25th Apr 2010. Wakefield Harriers Competing in the London Marathon.
The club had quite a large contingent competing in this year's London Marathon, amongst the record field of 36,000 runners. First home from the club was over 40 vet Carl Quinn in 3 hrs 03 mins, with Helen Beck first lady home, running her first marathon in a creditable 3 hrs 24 mins. Others inside 3 hours were Rob Parfrey 3 hrs 25 mins, Alex Potter 3 hrs 29 mins, James Morris 3 hrs 29 mins, Martin Holding 3 hrs 39 mins & Daniel Benjamin 3 hrs 50 mins. A surprise appearance in the results was from Mick McNulty, a long time club member who is now over 65, and managed a very creditable 4 hrs 04 mins. Other club members competing the course were Chris Ward, Sharon Sykes, Mark Box & Janni Hansen. Chris' performance was amazing, as for a charity challenge he had competed in the Three Peaks Fell Race the day before. To race 50 miles in a weekend at opposite ends of the country was a remarkable achievement ! Race Results.

24th Apr 2010. Several Harriers Complete Three Peaks Fell Race.

For the first time in many years a full team of Harriers took part in the gruelling 24 mile Three Peaks Race, which took in the famous peaks of Ingleborough, Penyghent & Whernside. Neil Penn was an excellent 50th overall out of over 1000 finishers in 3 hrs 45 mins, and was followed home by Chris Ward & Pete McNamara in 4 hrs 11 mins, Craig Heppenstall in 4 hrs 18 mins & John Ludvigsen in 4 hrs 23 mins, with Steve Wilkinson also managing to get round the tough course in 5 hrs 22 mins. 18th Apr 2010. Sheffield 'Festival of Athletics' results.
Several of the club's athletes had their first outing of the season at the Sheffield 'Festival of Athletics', with some good performances recorded. Thomas Leyshon jumped a grade 1 height of 1.85m in the U17M High Jump, and other leading performances were by Andrei Pobischan with 49.70s in the SM 400m, and Sally Smith was close to her PB with 2m 17.9s in the U17W 800m. 17th Apr 2010. First Round of WYT&F League at York.
There was nice spring sunshine at the first WYT&F League Meeting at York, which produced some good early season performances. Grace Eyles achieved a grade 1 performances in winning the U17L 300m in 41.3s, and grade 2 performances were achieved by Declan Sheehan (2nd U13B 80m 11.1s) & Benjamin Reid (1st U13B 800m in 2m 26.4s). In addition Lucy Holmes had a good winning double in the senior ladies 100m and 200m, and there were some good performances in the 1500m races. Matthew O'Connor & Jake Worton had a good 1-2 in the U17M 1500m, in 4m 23.5s & 4m 27.2s respectively, and Daniel Franks ran 4m 33.8s in the U15B 1500m. We were also pleased to see outstanding M45 vet John Convery competing in Wakefield colours for the first time, running 4m 28.3s in the men's 1500m.

11th Apr 2010. Julie Greenwood Second Lady in Friskney Half Marathon .
Julie Greenwood has been improving steadily in recent weeks, and had her best result of the year when finishing second lady and first in the F35 category at the Friskney Half Marathon in Lincolnshire, in a time of 1 hr 32 mins 37 secs. Race Results.

11th Apr 2010. New Outdoor U15 & U17 Pole Vault Club Record for Abigail Roberts.
At the Kingston-Upon-Hull Open Meeting there were some notable performances. Abigail Roberts as expected matched her indoor best in the Pole Vault, jumping a new U15 and U17 outdoor Pole Vault Club Record of 2.90m. With U15 Alice Cusworth also jumping a fine 2.50m, and Sally Spurr 2.20m, this event is becoing a strong one for us. U17 Rebecca Watts had an impressive 100m & 200m sprint double in 12.7s & 26.3s, Bethany Sharp impressed with 42.7s in the U17 300m, and Reagan Wright ran a fast 25.8s in the U20 200m.

4th Apr 2010. New Outdoor U15 Pole Vault Club Record for Abigail Roberts.
At the Mansfield Open Abigail Roberts was one of several young pole vaulters taking part, and she jumped a new U15 Pole Vault Club Record, vaulting 2.60m. This is well below her indoor record of 2.90m, but it must only be a matter of time before she clears this height outdoors as well. Sarah Drake continued her good form with 44.82m in the SW Hammer. 3rd Apr 2010. Excellent Turnout for Wakefield Harriers Spring Open Medals Meeting.
As last year there was an excellent turnout of over 420 athletes for the Spring Open Medals Meeting, with visitors from all over the North of England coming to Thornes Park Stadium, attracted by the wide programme of events and the electrical timing. For most athletes this was their first competition of the season, so there were few outstanding Harriers performances, but Grade 2 performances were achieved by Sarah Drake with 46.18m in the SW Hammer and by Thomas Leyshon with 1.80m in the U17M High Jump.
